I have landed at Kai Tak Airport on two occasions: August 1981 and July 1990. Both flights were from London Heathrow flying on a Boing 747. The July 1990 landing was at night. Both were amazing experiences.
I flew on Cathay from Gatwick on a 747-300, Same as the one in this clip. I was invited up to the flight deck. I was a Kiwi, And so was one of the Pilots. The other was a Pom. I stayed up there ,from flying over the Border into China, And then landing at Kai -Tak. 4 or 5 days before. A Lufthansa Freight had aqua planed into the harbour. Nose in. Tail out. Right on the end. That was 1983.
I have had the privilege of flying in and out of Kai Tak Airport 3 times. Once in 1994, and 2 times 1995. One of the most difficult airports in the world to land at. Select few pilots from most airlines were the only ones allowed to fly in and out. I used to like being up on the Peak watching these birds flying in. I felt sorry for those that lived directly (literally) under the flight path just after the red checkered board. How the residents ever got any sleep always amazed me.
Bringing back great memories, went to the roof-deck of the shopping mall where you could see the faces of the pilots in front of you before the plane took a steep turn right. I also remember looking at my right in the BA 747 and seeing a men reading the newspaper at his kitchendesk..... That was september 1996.
Landing at Kai Tak was an adventure by itself every single time before exploring HK. My fist time was in 1984 on way to work in China. Later I was posted to HK and could watch the activity on Kai Tak from my office window. The scariest landing was the last flight coming in from Taipei on CX during a Taifun with two go-a-rounds before finally setting down.
Very cool video. I had the pleasure of going through Kai Tak a could a couple of times before it closed. Was an amazing experience each time and feel lucky I got to experience it before the move to Chep Lap. BTW, don't need the music on the video. It's great as it is without it.
My very first international flight in 1996 landed at Kai tek for onwards journey to Seoul. Landed from water side, quite a special experience. Can never forget.
What a fantastic video, thanks for sharing! I like the rock'n'roll parts, and surely had a laugh with these smileys judging the landings LOL the Air India 747-300 was very cool, lots of rudder action during the takeoff. The Oman B747SP was also a big highlight!!!
landing in kai tak was like the most controlled and most exercised way of crashing a plane - without crashing literally head for the mountain while you do steep turns right over a city .. sounds crazy - these pilots did it on a daily base .
To think a select few of these aircraft might still be flying today! Some of those LH 747s, cargo aircraft, etc. Possibly a number of Cathay a330s/777s

Definitely must be a thrilling ride for sure 👌
Very envious! I can only experience takeoff and landing on runways 13 and 31 in the simulated cockpit!

Not much can beat a 747 with full flaps on the Checkerboard Approach… brilliant memories thank you 🙏🏼

I landed 4 times a Kai Tak from 1991 and 1997 on that Alitalia MD11 visible in the video: what an experience!!
Great memories anyway, thanks a lot!
AZ-1751/2 and AZ-1753/4 FCO-HKG i remeber the flight!
@@11AviationVideos In 1997 it was direct flight from Milan Malpensa Airport
@@giovannisoffiati2795 both numbers> Correct one of two was sure MXP, sorry my mistake.
@@11AviationVideos Now I don't think that ITA has resume the flight to HK.
@@giovannisoffiati2795 i could be a dream to see an MD-11 with today's ITA livery flying on IGS13😍

Love seeing the “queen of the skies” Boeing 747s!

This is very interesting and informative about kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong
Thank you Jeremy. I am trying to collect more info for a possible future remaster. Kai Tak is still in my heart
Lufthansa puts it right into the box. Sensational.
Thx. Good eye. We did our best at these times & our 744s loved Kai Tak. Greetings from Frankfurt, Germany
I used to climb up the checkerboard hill when I was a kid before.
Loved to watch those big birds come in and fly out.
@@stephenchan4695 I visit the ICB in 2007 but it was so sad to see the view of Kai Tak inactive 😭
that was one nasty crosswind on that 747 taking off.
Wow this is some fantastic footage!

I passed by Kai tak back in 1994. When Hong Kong still belonged to a blue team. Good vibes then.
@ 8:28 is a very rare 747sp. I think only 2 are still flying. Iran has one of them.
Good and real history 👍🙏❤️
Thanks
Fantastic,amazing😢😊
Thanks a lot 😊
jumbo 747 Sp..fantastic
The most beautiful aircraft ever
show...TKS for the video
The best airport ever
I've watched dozens of Kai Tak videos and in every single one, it seems like the exact same boats docked in Hong Kong's harbor
To think a select few of these aircraft might still be flying today! Some of those LH 747s, cargo aircraft, etc. Possibly a number of Cathay a330s/777s
No still operative DLH B744 has ever landed in Kai Tak, the oldest active joined the fleet in mid 1998.
@@ilkerismail1690 In that case, scratch those off the list
Sad to see a icon in aviation shut down
Kai Tak and Concord was the best of aviation history
Yes and sad to see the British Empire gone from Hong Kong. The 80’s and 90’s were the glory days of Hong Kong.
@@jcolbyt82 i cannot beilive that BA is no longer flying in HKG!
Crazy airport
It’s not because there’s is lots of smoke that it’s a bad landing. The LH was actually perfectly fine.

I need to check the original project for the music title. It is from youtube library

You mean from the otherside (flats)?
@@11AviationVideos yeah
Fantastic airport but eletric guitar’sound is terrible
we try to add some rock but we did not have the rights to use the correct one.
Totally agree. Viewers want to hear the engines & the airport not irritating demented music.
12:48 is that a plane that crashed at year 2002?
No idea. I have to check my notes from that trip.
