The boy in the video is Dylan, Stephanie Seymour's son (the woman Axl was dating in real life that's in Don't Cry and November Rain). In an interview about the song Estranged, Axl mentions how much he missed Dylan after the breakup because his mother didn't allow Axl to see him anymore. Even though Dylan wasn't Axl's son, Axl became attached to him as if he were. Estranged is about being separated from someone he loved (Dylan) and can't see anymore.

    W. Axl Rose's real-life story was truly horrific... Born William Bailey in Indiana (where Michael Jackson was also born), he was raised in a quasi-religious broken family by his mom and stepdad who were devotees of the church and televangelist Jimmy Swaggert (who was later busted w/ prostitutes) He claimed that his stepdad sexually abused his sister and physically abused him as children (Axl himself was apparently sexually assaulted by his absentee biological father as a minor) They were subject to physical punishments that were cruel and unusual for children of their age.
When he was a teenager, he discovered that he was born William Rose... his biological father was murdered around 1984. Axl changed his name to William Rose out of spite against his stepdad; he officially later changed it legally to W. Axl Rose (W.A.R. by coincidence)
As a child, Axl sang in the church choir and was gifted w/ a voice and a high intellect, as well as creativity... but he also showed signs of psychosis, more than likely a result of the stream of abuse he was subjected to... When he was a teen, he was out of control - busted by cops repeatedly for assaults and public intoxication... Lafayette police deemed him a 'habitual offender' and his parents apparently kicked him out of the house, accusing him of taking drugs.
In school, Axl sang in a band w/ Jeff Isbell, a guitarist who went by the name Izzy Stradlin... Izzy also came from a broken home and was raised under strict religious and abusive circumstances. In the early 80's, Izzy left Indiana for Los Angeles to become a rock star in the L.A. scene... Axl decided to follow in Izzy's footsteps and head for L.A. as well but apparently, it took him a month to locate where Izzy was staying.
The 2 joined a local band Hollywood Rose... Axl was clearly the star of the band and could sing live... Friends who saw Hollywood Rose noticed that Axl would stomp around the stage like a child throwing a tantrum - it was apparent to all that he had a difficult childhood.
Slash (lead guitar) was introduced to Axl and briefly joined Hollywood Rose.
After Hollywood Rose broke up, Axl and Izzy joined another local band L.A. Guns featuring Tracii Guns (lead guitar)... and they decided to change the name to Guns N' Roses in 1985 (Tracii was the 'Guns'... and Axl was the 'Roses') ... However, Axl fired Tracii Guns around 1986 and hired Slash on lead guitar... Slash also brought his friend Steven Adler (drums) into the band... Duff McKagan (bass) rounded out the original Guns N' Roses line-up.
Meanwhile, Tracii Guns reformed L.A. Guns and became successful in the 80's and early 90's w/ British vocalist Phil Lewis and scoring hit singles like - 'The Ballad of Jayne' ... 'Electric Gypsy' ... 'Rip and tear' ... 'Over the edge' 🔥🔥
After a string of line-up changes and shake ups, Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis are currently recording and touring as L.A. Guns.

Axl grew up a hour north of me in Lafayette Indiana. He had a nightmare childhood, abusive father, non caring mother. He was in trouble with Lafayette police all the time. Police finally told him to get out of town. He of course headed West, and the rest is history. I grew up in a neighborhood just like his, but had better parents.❤

The little boy is his girl's son. I think her name was Stephanie, could be wrong. Anyway, the little boy, Dillon was her son. He and Axl were very close, so when she left him, of course taking Dillon away, he was devastated. This song is mostly about that. Taking Dillon out of Axl's life crushed him. He spiraled into a really deep depression. He finally talked to Slash about it, and Slash actually wrote most of this song. He even learned some new guitar techniques just for this song. In my opinion, this song is their best guitar and piano work ever.

the book Without you is about The story revolves around 80's rock star guitar player Mayne Mann (yeah, I know, but that's how it was with those 80's glam rock types), who's been slowly self-destructing through drugs and alcohol after his band broke up. He shits money, so he can drink and drug himself to sleep every day, except he's not doing it because he's a depraved rock star. He's got emotions, see?
Turns out his girlfriend caught him cheating on her after his band's last show and she sent him packing, and no matter hoelw much he tried to win her back, she just was having none of it. So he wrote her a song called "Without You" that became his biggest solo hit and he tried to win her back by offering her royalties from it when the song didn't work by itself.
But no. She declined half of the royalties along with his overtures and, finally, after some time, he couldn't take it anymore and went to her place to try and talk to her but found her with the song playing on repeat and having shot herself in the head. So now he blames himself for cheating and for having his greatest hit be about this situation, and for her death, and for not being able to play anymore without thinking about his whole mess.
So he drinks, does drugs, destroys his apartment, destroys his car, throw his money out of the balcony and into the street, destroys most of his guitar collection except his '57 Les Paul Sunburst, lights his place on fire, and finally dies in the resulting inferno while performing "Without You" for her one last time.

LIFETIME FAN of GNR since they first came out in the 80's. He wrote this song from how he felt after his divorce with Erin Everly. He never got over her or remarried since then. She is still tattooed on his arm til this day. The def of this song is about loss of your soulmate it is a tragedy loss that can lead you to feel hopeless that makes you feel estranged. Then when Slash guitar riffs gets stronger and higher it's when you mend to heal from loss to see the light. He shows that you can build yourself out of that state to not give up and to see the beauty in life. To not allow anyone to bring you down from loss.. This song is another on of his Masterpiece! (The dolphins represent the beauty and quality of life and to live your life the fullest that you are worthy) Slash is my fav guitarist..Been to many concerts ..they were awesome in concert in the 80s thru 90s!!

For those that don't know what this artistic trilogy means, let me try my best to explain (read until the end):
Don't Cry, November Rain & Estranged are part of an intentional trilogy of music produced by GnR. They are based on a short story called "Without You" by Del James (which also has loose ties to Axl's own real life). At the very end of Estranged, the lyrics "Without You" are actually specifically mentioned.
These songs are meant to be taken in that specific context. They have the same director for the videos and have musical tie ins such as drum fill ins and certain chord progression culminations.
    Summary:
Don't Cry talks about the problems in their relationship (and others in the band). Think of it as starting like Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope... Lucas started in the middle of the story instead of with Episode 1.
November Rain moves back in time and shows the wedding which takes place before Don't Cry. Then it flashed forward and shows his wife's death. So this is akin to the Star Wars Prequels and then flashes forward to the beginning of last Star Wars trilogy.
Estranged is how he deals with all of the emotions. Either you let life bring you down and succumb to the sorrow or you fight back and take control of your own life. This would be akin Star Wars Episode 9.
It's a masterpiece and Axl is a musical genius. Axl has a higher octave range than virtually every singer you've ever heard of from Mariah Carey to Freddie Mercury. Super talented individual.
    Cheers!

I've been a metal vocalist for a few decades and when Iwas growing up, these albums were like the holy grail to me. The music is like this heavy blues rock sound and the vocals were harsh and could be very aggressive but melodic I've got a higher vocal register so I could hit every single one of these notes, harmonies, everything. I listened to them everyday and I knew that this was what I wanted to do. Ended up doing band logos, photography and cover art but, I have all these amazing memories... and I can still hit all these notes.
    Music moves me. Always has.

I feel like the bride dying in November Rain was metaphorically about the relationship ending. In Don't Cry, his old self dies as he falls in love. He gets married and then the marriage suddenly ends. In Estranged he goes nuts after his wife leaves him. He has to work through his issues until he finds peace within himself. That's my interpretation.

Originally they had Don’t Cry by the 1st album but it was not included cause Axl would change things in middle of a set. But he heard one of the band members sing a part of a lyric and said that’s what the song was missing . I think he was going through a divorce when that was written.

Yes, that was Charles Manson on the front of his shirt. Did you notice the "quote" on the back? "Charlie Don't Surf".... that's a line from "Apocalypse Now", referencing the North Vietnamese (who were referred to as "Charlie", and yes, it IS a somewhat racist term), and a fetish of an American soldier who loved surfing... but noted that "Charlie Don't Surf", meaning that the North Vietnamese don't partake of that activity, despite having "good waves to surf".
A rather interesting dichotomy, if you really think about it.
Oh, and since you (kinda) asked the question.... Yes, I *DID* go to those concerts. I saw GnR with Metallica at RFK Stadium back in 1992. That show..... was.... INSANE!!! I still have my ticket for that show! I went with about a dozen friends, and we were in the parking lot "getting elevated" while Faith No More was on stage. But we could clearly hear them. We knew that when they played "Epic", it was time to finish our beverages (and whatever else we were partaking in) and mosey on inside. Metallica hit the stage next, and played as the sun was setting.... incredible effect, I might add. GnR took their time getting to the stage, but they finally did (2 hours after Metallica had finished)... and because it was early in the tour, there wasn't an "Axl Incident" (Google that, if you need to) and they put on a great show. All in all, it was a VERY memorable experience for all the right reasons! Unlike what would happen later in the same tour..... (yeah, look that up.... it got NUTS!)
I hate to say this, but you younger people missed out. I was in at least 5 Mosh Pits, and was even put up into "crowd surfing" at that show. Given all of the intoxicants I imbibed, I'm shocked I remember as much of it as I do.

Read the short story without you. She committed suicide that's how she died in November rain. Axl and Stephanie broke up before estranged came out so the dolphins replaced her. Also in the story he does after his place caught on fire while he was playing the song he wrote for her "without you".

This is the first time I saw/heard Estranged, and I do like it. But it just doesn't quite live up to November Rain for me, which continues to be my favorite GNR song and video. Thanks for doing this one. I was going to check it out on my own, got distracted and totally forgot.

GNR had a lot of deep lyrics, one of the best bands ever at the time. For me they were always better live. Check out "Civil War" live in Paris and the live Tokyo concert, it was just amazing. They had amazing backup singers and songs like "November Rain" or Rocket Queen and also Don't Cry were just amazing live.
Also great was "Knockin on Heavens Door" live at Freddy Mercury tribute concert

Charlie is an interesting character, when he was young he was in care an abused, now go forward they paint Charlie as crazy, they claimed of his bad deeds, but he was never convicted of bad crimes, he talked outside the box.he was talking about the power of the people who be.Now look at C19 see what control they had and your rights they stripped away. They claim to protect you while they crash decent and force you to believe a reality they perceive.God Bless

What a treat. One of my favourite GnR tracks ever. Probably because I so empathise with the lyrics. And I'm not crazy. Or most of my family is. Loners talk to themselves. Fact. It's introspection, refection and meditation rolled into one. .Lol, that little thing on Manson's forehead. So popular everywhere these days. PS: this song still leaves me in tears. Always.

"Don't cry" was filmed in 1991 when Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose was dating supermodel Stephanie Seymour, who appeared in the music video... I believe the storyline was inspired by Axl's volatile relationship w/ model Erin Everly (who was the inspiration of "Sweet child O' mine") whom Axl married briefly... they split permanently in 1990 and Axl asked for an annulment.
In the music video, it shows Axl dying and his girlfriend grieving...
'November Rain' was inspired by a story by a writer friend of theirs - Del James... It depicted Axl and Stephanie getting married (They were engaged in real life) and their wedding reception is interrupted by November rain... A year later, it's his wife who dies (apparently by su.ic.ide) and Axl is left grieving as November rain comes down on her funeral. It was a massive budget and filmed in 1992.
'Estranged' was actually written by Axl about his split w/ Erin Everly... By the time the music video was filmed in 1993, Axl and Stephanie Seymour had called off their engagement and split up (Both Erin Everly and Stephanie Seymour sued Axl Rose for abuse, and he had to pay them million$ in damages) So, the music video focused on Axl's character after losing his wife... clearly struggling to live after his loss... It was another mega-budget music video which included an aircraft carrier and dolphins!
Footage from the concert was filmed in the Guns N' Roses/ Metallica stadium tour in 1992 (Looks like Seattle)

This is a trilogy only in the sense that they are all related stories about the way that love can turn out, tragedy, death and divorce (from Axl's point of view). I don't think they are supposed to be a follow on from each other.
Estranged means a huge amount to me. Metaphorically I see it as a life going well, with music and concerts, followed by a significant change and the end of a dream of having children (when the children are playing outside in the heaven-like setting), notice they are all ignored, because they don't really exist yet, they are just future possibles that never happened. Following that and the split, it moves into the second section, where the inevitable 'lets go and drink our way out of this' bit happens, when this doesn't solve the problem Axl takes the ultimate way out and tries to end it all by jumping into the sea.
Friends try to help rescue him and reach out to him (literally from the boat that's being rowed) but he seems to be drowning and literally going under.
Do the dolphins (metaphorical good thoughts) save him, or does he drown? I think thats left to you to decide.

Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 was a concept double album and a departure from style of harder rock that they had been known for up to this point. They wanted to take a turn in the direction and incorporated a brass and piano. Use Your Illusion 1 was a deeper dive into a darker, but softer style. Use Your Illusion 2 was a heavier side with the most popular song being from the movie TERMINATOR 2 - "You Could Be Mine". This album really strained the bands relationship. They were the last albums made by the band besides an album called THE SPAGHETTI INCIDENT, which is mostly covers so not a true album. I read that the combined cost for the trilogy of videos was over $7 million and more than half was on the "Estranged" video.

the trigaly cost $7 million, more than half of which was for “Estranged” alone. if you adjust for inflation that’s roughly $12.6 million - Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which came out a year after “Estranged,” was made for $8.5 million

    The way it's connecting is
Don't Cry is the relationship before the marriage, the ups and downs & how it makes him crazy.
November Rain is getting married & a sudden death & the grief behind that.
Estranged is about him trying to move on, she's dead and has tried to get on with his life but can't do it anymore and is often thinking about suicide. The Dolphins represent her spirit keeping him alive, being there to remind him of her & to stay strong.

Guns n Roses was a name derived from the fact Axel Rose was in the band LA Guns and Hollywood Rose. Axel Rose & Traci Guns decided to combine the names to form the band but soon after Traci decided to leave & Axel kept the name.
