The mascot’s name is Eddie. He’s absolutely iconic and just as beloved as Iron Maiden. You’re in for a real and true journey, BP. Iron Maiden are one of the most notable bands from their era. Steve Harris, the bassist, writes their songs. He’s known as a godfather of bass playing and Bruce, the vocalist, is in a place all his own. An absolute powerhouse. The whole band is straight 🔥.

I first saw Iron Maiden live in 1981, that was the first of eleven IM concerts I have assisted to. They are still well alive and kicking and they are currently on the "Future Past" World Tour. The line-up is still the same as you can see in this video from 2008, 15 years older and still running on the stage like crazy. For the next reactions, I would suggest anthems like "Fear of the Dark" or "The Trooper". For an amazing experience, I would also check "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner".

You are entirely correct, Iron Maiden, together with a few other bands from the UK paved the way for what we today call heavy metal in the late 70s and early 80s. And they're still going strong. They are amazing story tellers and entertainers. If you're going to look into more, I suggest Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, a 13-minute masterpiece. But go through the lyrics ahead of time, just to follow the story 🙂
A lot of Americans haven't even heard most of the European bands despite the music coming from here. The US was behind.

The best part of the "Devil Music" assumption is the fact that this song is practically a hymn.
Hallowed Be Thy Name starts slow and mournful with an unnamed convict in his cell facing the last day of his life, as he’s scheduled to be hanged today:
I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
'Cause at 5 o'clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low
    Running low, yeah!
The song picks up pace as the priest arrives to administer last rights, and a side-by-side journey begins for the condemned - on one side his physical walk to the courtyard to face the hangman, and on the other a spiritual journey from terror to anger to serenity to acceptance and finally joy.
It’s in that second journey, and especially in it’s conclusion that the “devil music” assumption falls apart.
When the priest comes to read me the last rites
Take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me
Can it be that there's some sort of error?
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?
As the Convict tells us what he’s thinking the music becomes an inexorable march. The Convict’s terror comes through in denial, but the beginning of peace begins to creep in as he professes his faith
Somebody, please tell me that I'm dreaming
It's not easy to stop from screaming
The words escape me when I try to speak
Tears flow, but why am I crying?
After all, I'm not afraid of dying
Don't I believe that there never is an end?
He’s not there yet. He still has some anger and frustration to work out:
As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Somebody cries from a cell, "God be with you"
If there's a God, why has he let me go?
The music continues its force march forward as the Convict examines his live and begins to arrive at serenity:
As I walk, my life drifts before me
Though the end is near I'm not sorry
Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away
From there, his faith takes over and he feels truly prepared. His early declaration that he’s not afraid is given reason and conviction:
Mark my words, believe my soul lives on
Don't worry now that I have gone
I've gone beyond to seek the truth
When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion
The Music continues its seemingly unstoppable pace, but as the song progresses, you can hear it become more and more uplifting, by the end it wouldn't sound out of place in the middle of a Tchaikovsky symphony carried by violins and cellos rather than electric guitars.
By the time the music’s physical march leads the Convict into the courtyard and up the steps to the gallows, he’s no longer afraid, and he’s gone beyond serenity, into the realm of true joy. His voice is raised in ecstasy, as he joyfully begins to sing the only thing on his mind - The Lord’s Prayer:
    Yeah-yeah-yeah! Hallowed be thy name!!
    Yeah-yeah-yeah! Hallowed by thy name!!
The music takes you through to the end, and you know it’s the end, at least of the story,
But by the end of it, you can’t come away feeling like it’s anything but a hymn.
One of the best metal songs ever written. Maybe THE best.

I want to congratulate you on going outside your comfort zone to discover the pioneers of metal. Iron Maiden IS still touring and Bruce's voice is still AMAZING! I've been to at least a hundred concerts (mostly rock) and I was lucky enough to get to see this band live - in 2016. It was one of THE BEST live performances a person could ask for! I will never forget this show, which is in my top 5 fave concerts. The energy, the crowd interaction, the top notch vocals and the SIKKK instrumentation makes this band THE ONE to emulate. They are almost 50 yrs strong and still going! They are NOT, however, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! Can u believe that???!!! Judas Priest (my fave band) just got inducted 2 yrs ago and they have been around over 50 yrs. (and are STILL performing live). If u react to Judas Priest, you should do Victim of Changes. Also, you should check out Pantera's "Cemetary Gates". It is one of the greatest metal songs ever! Oh, and Ozzy is from England and AC/DC is from Australia, though Angus and his brother Malcom founded the band and they were born in Scotland. P.S. I got to see Ozzy, Judas Priest and AC/DC twice each! Rock on Black Pegasus!

Bruce became theiir singer for their third and biggest album. He is THE singer. He left for a few years in the 90s, and then returned. Their original drummer fell ill in the early 80s and was replaced by Nicko who has been with them since. The guitarists are also original, with some temorary changes over the years. For all intents and purposes this is the OG band since the early 80s. Legends.

“Better” is very subjective. The studio versions are, obviously, more clean cut and polished. The vocals are often easier to understand. But, the playing is still excellent live, and the energy more than compensates, imo, for the less polished sound.
They also play at a faster tempo live-that’s not inherently better or worse, just different. I love it, but maybe it’s not for everybody?

  • @johnbratmon6385
    @johnbratmon6385 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yup. They might not have originated the twin/triple guitar format but they perfected it. Iron Maiden have been around since 1975 and blew up in 1980-ish; they were one of the original "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (or NWOBM as Bruce Dickenson likes to laugh about) bands in the late 70's/early 80's. Of the original members, only Bassist Steve Harris & Guitarist Dave Murray are in the band; after that, it's hard to say who was an "original member" as there were a few quick in-&-out players in the early days. Of the current lineup, drummer Nicko McBrain replaced Clive Burr, who left for musical differences; he died some years back from Parkinson's or ALS (don't remember which). Guitarist Adrian Smith replaced Dennis Stratton, left the band after a few albums & came back. Guitarist Janick Gers came in to replace Adrian Smith, and remained after Adrian Smith returned, giving Maiden a 3-guitar attack. Singer Bruce Dickenson replaced Paul Di'anno & left for a short while after some albums to do a solo career but returned to front the band. So, the classic lineup in the band now has remained for many decades. Steve Harris, the bassist, writes the majority of the songs with assists from the other guys. They've built their following organically (by going out & playing night after night) without the help of radio, much like Metallica did after them. Being a maiden fan is more than just liking/loving their music; it's a tribe, as most in the metal genre appreciate them, if not like them. They have been doing it for 45+ years, are still on tour as we speak (with this same lineup as in the video) and they're the real deal...

Maiden were one of the "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" that came soon after bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. They set a high bar when it comes to lyrics because Bruce had a classical education.
They wrote songs about historical moments such as the European settlement of America with "Run To The Hills", the infamous battle known as "the charge of the light brigade" with the song "The Trooper".
Bruce often refers to classical literature in songs like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner".
Bruce also has a melt-down if he smells anyone smoking in the audience because it may hurt his voice.

it's funny. in my church youth group we had a young pastor, and he encouraged us to listen to all kinds of music. However, he'd also like us to bring our fav songs to group, so we could listen, and try an break down the lyrics to see if we could detect what the message was.
Very little of '80s metal, or metal in general is ' satanic, most of it was a gimmic to go against the establishment for those that used the imagery. The ' Satanic Panic ' of the '80s was crazy, and why we now have rating labels. Because Tiper Gore an her bunch of busy bodies couldn't get music censored like they wanted due to First Ammendment.

Not copying - inspired by. All artists are inspired by something, often not one, but many things.
Some artists push boundaries and open doors that others can pass through, but those artists carry different things with them, so while they are similar, they are all still their own.
The root of the problem in today's music and entertainment (T.V./Movies) is that while there are still those pushing boundaries and opening doors, the ones passing through them are not allowed to be individuals anymore. Everything a carbon copy of what was successful. It is all too similar in sound and/or content and ultimately bores the audience. There are those that make their music/story their own, but it is rare today that they are able to do so.

Saw them live when they came to town because you know, have to see the beast perform. Bruce's voice so stable and grand even when running all over the place. The magic of 3 guitars, that's what I find unique and interesting. Ah, that wonderful time when concert tickets were purchasable, reasonable (best sections 50$-175$). You weren't a die hard fan, but still went because why not. Now, even the bands that I'm real fan of, I pass (worst sections 500-600$). So when bands like Foreigner, Styx, Iron Maiden, REO Speedwagon, etc are on Tour, we try to go see them with her. She’s always blown away by how great these old bands sound live. We tell her over and over that because back in those days they didn’t have the technology they have now to mask some of the bad singing (and instruments too). She’s been to concerts with new bands too. Yep, they have their own jumbo that Bruce pilots. Btw…..I’m 53 and Maiden was my first concert in 1983….yes, I was 12!!! I think during my middle school years I wore a different Maiden tshirt every single day. Yes…..Maiden is the genuine article. You haven't hear nothing yet. They have over 70 songs that are tops in the entire metal music scene. Their first singer was Paul Di Anno, who took part in the first two albums.
1st album 1980 - ''Iron Maiden'' - 2nd album 1981 - ''Killers''. After these two, Paul Di Anno was replaced by Bruce Dickinson and in 1982 the 3rd and most EPIC and successful album
of ALL TIMES in history of New Wave of British Heavy Metal (commonly abbreviated as NWOBHM) took place.
They have huge discography carrer and unbeliveble lives in their story all over the world. Hundreds of millions fans.
For me, who have been listening to them since my teenage years (I started at 14 and I'm still listening to them now that I'm 54) and I'm one of their oldest fans , the first 7 albums of
this amazing band are the most important ones they made. These are:
    Iron Maiden (1980)
    Killers (1981)
The Number of the Beast (1982)
    Piece of Mind (1983)
    Powerslave (1984)
    Somewhere in Time (1986)
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)
AND YOU MUST LISTEN TO THEM ANYWAY.
Each album has a different musical nuance and each song is a different story that usually comes from books and novels read by bandleader and bassist Steve Harris.
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray -for me- is the most successful guitar duo of all heavy metal bands.
Their great success is that each song is 'dressed' with the appropriate music to go along with each story perfectly. They have incredible spins in their tracks with very catchy riffs and wide-scale sounds that will take you on a journey, like a movie. But Iron Maiden are not just all that. You have to 'discover' them..

Look up the term "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NWOBHM) and you'll find contemporary bands like Def Leppard, Diamond Head, Saxon (Bruce's previous vocalist gig). Their success even buoyed existing hard rock bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, etc. to become even more popular.

Best metal bands are British. Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest Led Zeppelin…..AC/DC are Australian but they are British immigrants to Australia. Pink Floyd, Queen, Genesis, Yes, all British.
