A Critique of Secret Hitler (and a comparison to avalon)

- Secret Hitler released all the way back in 2016, was an immense success and a huge breakthrough for social deduction games for the mainstream. After 8 years, I take a quick look back at why I think it's a bad game.

I love this criticism, and it's honestly why I haven't played in years. I appreciate that you watched my GDC talk too, haha. I appreciate that we agree Avalon is basically perfect, I have no idea why SH got so popular when Avalon is right there, I'd guess that people like to experience tension and climax but not have to actually figure things out.
2/10 is harsh though!
Thank you for the comments! I agree, the climax and tension is unmistakable, but I feel like it is manufactured inorganically, which is my major issue with the game.
In the groups I play with, SH really slam dunks accessibility and also perfectly timed the 'edginess' of the political reality (still applicable today I think). So, when I asked if people want to play SH, it was instantly intriguing. It is still so much easier than most of my other games to get on the table. We had tons of fun with the game, I just can't find joy in the puzzle anymore.

I played this game 200 times and it's really very good. I strongly recommend this game. I will rate it 9/10.
My other ratings are, Avalon 9/10 (Played 200 times), Blood On The Clock Tower 10/10 (Played 50 times), Brass Birmingham 10/10 (Played 500 times)
Thank you for the comment! I've been on a twilight imperium binge (working on POK), but I want to clock in more games of blood on the clocktower. Usually I'd be the story teller, so I'm a bit hesitant to give much of an opinion of the whole game while I know only one perspective.

i truly want to say youre just being salt, but sadly you mostly right.
however i would say that the
communist expansion (fucking-fan-made) make the game wayyyy better, i like secret hitler and find enjoyable, but its not that good.
