missing her 🤎

this is one of the last conversations i had with her about her kiddos. they would have been about 3 weeks old here - a little fur and eyes not yet open.
at this time i knew that muchi had made her home near us but i had no idea that she made it literally in our home! her nest was in a small hole in our roof right by our bedroom windows. that means she and her babies could hear us and see us all the time - which would explain how she knew when we were awake! i wish i had known she was right outside our window. we only found out after she had passed and saw her babies come out for help.
i also had no idea that this girl had SIX kids! she was so small when she was pregnant i really thought there would only be two like last season. i never would have thought that we would be rehabbing her kids either - they deserved her love and warmth. i hope she’s happy with our decisions and how her babies are doing. i always wish i had her guidance because i can’t know if i’m doing right by them.
taking care of these squirrel babies with no experience has been no joke! i’m endlessly grateful for the advice and support we’ve gotten from rehabbers on the squirrel board and here on instagram.
after this video, i found muchi 10 days later. she was still warm and her eyes still bright. it’s been difficult to accept this truth but… there was nothing i could do. even if i had found her 10 minutes sooner, i don’t think we could have saved her and that hurts so much. i miss her so badly - i still had so much love to give her.
