Anyone notice that Lance Armstrong has exceptional luck on rainy days? This day was rainy, the day at Sestriere in 1999 was raining, I think also Hautacam 2000 was rainy, and, of course, the final time trial in 2003, the year that Ullrich nearly beat him in the tour: that day, Ullrich slipped and fell on the wet road, blowing away any chance of that happening. Interesting, no?
No luck involved. It's well known that Armstrong was one of the best in handling the bike, he had a perfect cycling technique. And lots of courage as well. So on slippery roads he had an edge.
The kid hammers, plain and simple. He made a HUGE mark with his natural pro like animal strength from a real young age, so much that his presence always made a space of 2 riders.(imagine being in top form, punchin the hills in the big ring, and Lance comes around you like your on a stroll, and hes the motorcycle)
I lived in Austin when Lance won this rainbow jersey. He wore it proudly at one of our Tuesday night races which was amazing. I got the last copy of Velo news w Lance on the cover from Freewheeling Bicycle shop which is now signed by LA himself.
On this race Armstrong wasn't on drugs. The USADA decission stripped him of the results obtained since 98 until 2010. Armstrong claims he began into doping back in the 95. So, in 93 he was clean.
@@ilBarbonauta of course. I have always considered Armstrong one of the best ever in pure technical cycling. On these slippery roads he had an edge which you can't "buy" with doping.
its true he did lost a lot of weight. his muscle grew back differently. thats why he looks like less of a bulky rider now, compared to 1993. but over time he reached 165 again. some even say he weighed 174-5 back in 1993
i keep hearing and reading about how he lost so much weight after the cancer thing and how that helped him. Im 5'10" also and my race weight is 150lbs.
If he manages to win the tour de france this yr he will be a true legend! i doubt it though but with someone who won the wc only 21 yrs old ull never know.
Indurain, Chiapucci, Tchmil, Museeuw, Ludwig, Fondriest, Giovanetti, Lauritzen, and all the others of the chase group were no less doped than Armstrong. So what's the difference? Simple: Armstrong was stronger on the day. I doubt he had a better doping program since this is a subject in which he gained his knowledge from a well-known Italian sports scientist.
not only he was the strongest that day, but it's also well known that Armstrong was one of the best in handling the bike, he had a perfect cycling technique. And lots of courage as well. So no wonder he won on such slippery road.
5'10'' 165 lbs. is not exactly a bulky body builder figure.... and he "became" somebody else because of cancer... he just didnt gain the weight back after recovery... i dont know whether or not he cheated, but your comment does not make any sense
@fitnessfreaky Yeah I remember that, but it just seems that while some people flop in the rain (the rain is a psychological barrier for many- I myself hated racing in the rain, both as a runner and as a cyclist) Armstrong thrived and had some of his best performances. Others can withstand hot and humid conditions better than most.
at the time of this race I was in college and had no idea who he was. used a pic shot during this race as a magazine spread assignment. wish I kept that piece, now that I know who armstrong is....
Francisco Conconi doped many of the Italians at this time. There was actually medical records of rider's hematocrits from the Conconi's Italian doping in the early 90s (almost all in the upper 50s. Normal hematocrit is like low 40s for a cyclist. This made it impossible to compete clean at this level of competition after about 1991. It still continues to this day actually, but in a more brutal manner because a lot of the effective drugs are experimental/ not banned/ not widely known.
Indurain said that group chased him as hard as they possibly could - he simply couldn't believe how strong Lance was that day. Lemond wasn't there to see it first hand. I think this is one reason Lemond said in '93 that Armstrong would always be a one-day rider. Indurain wasn't as willing to sell him short on potential.
Good win by armstrong back in his initial days as a pro. But, look at the course - classics style with some hills but mostly flat. Armstrong did very well on hilly courses but the high mountains were too hard, like many other classic riders find. However, for some reason (WITH THE HELP OF DRUGS?) he morphed into a mountain goat.
@Rkeezy32 Not true that almost everyone who's finished in the tour top ten has been caught doping. LeMond won 3 tours clean. Hampsten & Mottet both managed 4th plus stage wins.
Great ride, a well deserved win. The followers could have caught him, but few wanted to commit. Chiappuchi is not afraid, but needed help. With three Italians in the chase, why could they not cooperate? They most likely would have caught LA. Were they afraid of Indurain and Musseuw? And why do commentators say LeMond won two WC? Does his Junior Worlds win not count?
Oslo at its best!! What a weather! At this time cycling was not a very popular sport in Norway, as you can tell by the lack of a crowd along the last 5 km of the course. Home favourite Dag Otto Lauritzen led the race for a long time, and raised some norwegian eyebrows. Now cycling is picking up, with Thor Hushovd regularly winning stages in the TdF. Should we ever get the world championships again I think it would be a much better event. Note Bjarne Riis, TDF winner to be, is also in there.
Anyone who thinks Armstrong was clean - pre and post cancer - quite frankly, is naive. Follow the Ferrari trail, you will see. Listen to P. Steffen, too. But, he was a horse in a herd - during his time doping was simply the culture that existed.

@Drumshanbohustle haha. moreno argentin hated him because he mistook him for another rider once in a race and it pissed armstrong off. So armstrong essentially spat in his face and then beat him in a race moreno was favored in. armstrong wasnt very gracious as a young man, but a vicious champion he will always be.
That's not to say he doesn't have a lot of reason *to* like him, but yeah... also, I [and a lot of cycling fans] have an issue not with armstrong, but with some of his fans, who have this perception that he is The Greatest Cyclist Who Ever Lived.
