    I am an MD board certified in the US. I am not diabetic or obese, I watched this video because my daughter told me about it. Dr. Fung totally convinced me, his view is revolutionary but it makes lot of sense. Indeed we as doctors have been mistreating our patients giving bad advice and it is shameful that I have to find this out on TH-cam! What he is saying is so important that it should be on national television!

      i also wanted to say that intermittent fasting is good but it takes time to switch from carb burning to fat burning. the best solution is to do a keto diet along with IF. keto dieting gets a bad rap since you eat fat in place of carbs. but if you don't stall the insulin for a few days you will not be burning fat the way you need to. i guarantee you that over a few days you will go from eating too much to eating at a calorie deficit since the natural hormones that tell you that you don't need food can finally be heard. insulin covers up those hormones no matter how loud they're screaming. i have fasted for a week. it took three days to stop being hungry and after 7 days i had to eat again because it's not a sustainable diet. of course the weight just comes right back. but with keto you stay in fasting mode and it is totally sustainable.

      I have T2D and my Dr and nutritionist told me I need to eat whole grain, wheat bread , jello, pudding, popsicles, not too much sugar, watch salt, cut fat, only eat palm size hamburger meat, must measure all foods before consuming and keep candy or a soda handy bc I will need it. They say I need to eat carbs but don't eat too much bc my blood sugar will spike and we don't want that to happen. Well everytime I eat the foods they recommended my blood sugar skyrockets so I no longer follow their advice. I still take the meds my PCP prescribe but now I feel I am doubting their advice. I feel they no longer care about healing and curing for people's illness. I mean if you don't specialize in that health or disease then you should refer your patient to someone who can help them instead of giving bad advice which makes that patients health deteriorated for the worst turns. I am loosing trust in the medical profession. I have a disease and my health is not improving by their advice instead they want to keep me medicated for life and they proceeded to tell me there is no cure. Are the people who claims they have change their diet have cure their disease liars? Then we have a Dr who can answer questions that my nutritionist and PCP cannot give me answers.

      100%. Love and have followed Dr. Fung and Berg for years. I truly wish there were more doctors on the planet that gave a dam about health and informing people for free with truth. Especially in the US we are just set up to fail with the FDA, government, and medical industry making everyone sick with endless processed pre packaged chemical garbage and junk food. Then the solution is to ofcourse keep you on "medicine and chemicals" the rest of your life as opposed to God forbid heal with natural remedies and things like fasting around for ages. Literally no $$ in the cure and they dont care how many people die per it which is the horrifying didpicsbke fact. That mixed with the 50 year old textbook bs of eat 50 meals a day to "speed" up your metabolism and fats are horrible is just the nail in the coffin when people are in ignorant bliss, overweight and dont learn any better among all the people who are just naturally slim and eat anything per it not effecting them so they dont care about the health aspect of it. Crazy crazy cycle in this country. Doctors like this need an award trying to help with free info to a brainwashed society. Nothing a fasting lifestyle cant heal among eating quality whole clean foods. If only we all realized this from childhood. Better late than never and sadly something many still refuse to believe from fear of "starving" in a life of endless snacking addiction!

      @colleenkaralee2280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Ditto. I've had to train my mind to take up another interest so as not to suffer boredom and tedium. It's not easy when during fasting autophagy the body is finally seeing its true condition and working through the adrenal glands and other glands and organs and bowels and nervous system, and when my blood pressure is on the floor due to underperforming adrenals, it is hard to pull out of the lethargy, and finally entering the feeding window gives the adrenal glands a bit of a stimulant, an external boost and that keeps me going. Eventually the body will give an "All Clear" re all underperforming issues and we will walk into our "old age" vital and healthy.

      Yet, the body can only do this in the absence of carbs, or insulin. For those whose insulin remains high long after they eat, especially a meal with sugar (even fruit) and/or starch, the switch to being able to access body fat for energy may take days, even weeks. For details, check out 'The Case for Nutritional Ketosis' by Dr. Stephen Phinney th-cam.com/video/_evJd_iZZzs/w-d-xo.html

      It’s completely normal to have insulin spikes after *any* meal. You want low fasting insulin, consistently, year in and year out.
      There’s only one way to achieve that: high carb, low fat vegan (no oil, very very low fat). You will never have an excess body weight issue in your life with sugar. You will with fat and protein, though.
      Fat stores into the body the easiest out of ALL macronutrients. Guess which of three does not, or does it so poorly?
      *Sugar*
      If you want to lose weight folks (and sustainably) - it’s ideally fruit and IF, or at the very least high carb, low fat VEGAN (no oil, minimal salt). No caffeine like keto. Just let the body run on it’s preferred source of fuel - sugar from fruit/starch.

    In my life I have 2 examples. My grandma from mother’s side has had health issues since she was 40. Doesn’t eat well at all. All the desserts and carbs. She’s at her 60’s now has diabetes, goes to dialysis at least 4 times a week, her toe was cut off due to gangrene (because she had a tint scar and it didn’t heal) her muscles are melting away but after all these things she still continues to eat unhealthy things. There’s never a time that she doesn’t have dessert at her house. On the other hand my grandma from father’s side at her 80’s little to no medication (no cholesterol meds) she is in good condition. She made everything herself that was in her capabilities, hated getting boxed juices and yogurt. Because of our religion she also fasted for a month in a year. One is almost bedridden and the other cleans the whole house and cooks almost everyday. Seeing them is my number 1 motivation for eating healthy.

      Diabetes was treated successfully by Dr. Kempner in the early 20th century with a diet of rice fruit and sugar. Although low-tech, the benefits of the Rice Diet far exceed those of any drug or surgery ever prescribed for chronic conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart and kidney failure, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and obesity. Dr. Neal Barnard has written a book about diabetes and he recommends a whole plant-based diet. Also there’s another book called mastering diabetes where they recommend high fruit and vegetable consumption. Dr. Michael Gregor has a video on how saturated fat is linked to type two diabetes.

      Re money and eating healthy, when I was on a tight budget one year (before my pension kicked in) I had been studying about what the human body thrives on. I could only budget $3USD daily for food and so I lived all summer on a $6 huge watermelon with a squeeze of lemon juice (to balance out electrolytes) which lasted two days, and during the winter I lived on bags of apples. You know what? I felt great and my body never got tired of watermelon and apples. Of course now I also add in nutrient dense seaweed and alfalfa tea, and the occasional fatty cheat food, but no sugary processed sweets. I'd rather stock my freezer with bags of bing cherries and other fruits than evermore bite into a cinnamon bun, which I used to love. For example, local grocer has a $2.98 sale on one pound bags of frozen fruits - my two freezers are stuffed to the gills :-))

      @@dvdgnz1 not it isnt. one can eat the SAME amount of calories in 4hrs instead of 5 smaller meals and lose lots of bodyfat. same amount of calories and same foods. but by fasting you increase the period where insulin is super low thus fat can be oxidised (burned) for much longer periods of time. losing fat is primarly a HORMONE issue, not calories.

    To summarize of his ultimate losing weight technique:
    1. Do a 24 hrs fasting. This will drop your insulin and deplete all glycogen and excess water.
    2. After 24 hrs, your body will enter fat burning mode.
    3. Eat only 1-2 meal, limit your carb. If your carb exceeds 20 gram it will hinder your fat burning. Keep majority of calorie come from protein and fat.
    4. Keep consistent. Weight will drop.

    Dr. Jason Fung, in minute 50:00 - 1:00:00, alludes to that fact he is a bit macronutrient agnostic - citing examples of the Okinawan, Kitavan, and the Chinese and Irish 40 years ago, who ate a lot of carbs but who did not have high levels of insulin, and therefore did not have an obesity problem. The key, as he rightly points out, is that they were not eating frequently and ate little to no sugar, and therefore did not trigger high insulin levels chronically. Before vegans and other high carb advocates jump on this admission, it is important to point out that this does NOT mean that, therefore, people who are currently obese and have insulin resistance should just switch to high carb diets. The key takeaway from what Dr. Fung is saying in this segment is that, because these aforementioned people never ate frequently, and ate very little sugar, they were NOT insulin resistant, and therefore the high carb diets that they did eat, will not effect them the same way it would effect an obese insulin resistance modern person. Since Americans, and people in other nations which are encountering an obesity crisis, have been eating frequently for decades, they DO HAVE INSULIN resistance. Hence, the best way for these people to transition to less frequency of eating (i.e. intermittent fasting), is by eating a low carb diet. This makes the transition easier, because it mitigates or eliminates the postprandial blood sugar roller coaster, thus making the transition from eating frequently to eating infrequently less painful.

    I lost 25 lbs (38 yrs old). My wife lost 15 lbs (35 yrs old), my mom lost 30 lbs, normalized blood pressure and cholesterol with fasting and light exercise (69 yrs old). If the stories of success are your pay - you've changed the life outcomes of members of my family - Thank you! (We also bough the book, lol).
    My mom's doctor is so shocked he wants her to stop doing it (she wears skinny jeans now). He wanted to put her on statins and meds but can't now that she lost all that weight and normalized her metabolism. He's trying to scare her into stopping even though she has the health outcomes he would have wanted for her on those meds. I'm thinking the advice she got from her son watching youtube videos is better than anything he's ever done for a patient with high cholesterol and blood pressure - decentralizing health knowledge is quite a threat.
    For me, his reaction is more proof to the later part of your convo - they are paid not to understand or to not relay what is best for people.

    This video is my bible. My absolute favorit on the subject. I re-listen to it sometimes. It has clarified the caloric concept vs. fasting. Now I fully understand why fasting is such a great tool to lose weight and why it won't slow the metabolism. I wish I had this info many many years ago, lost in the maze of data about weight loss and nutrition.. My metabolism slowing down as I tried one diet after the other.. With some diet I was practically starving (and jogging every day) but still only lost 2kg in a month.. Now I know why. Eating many times and too much carbs in the "protein shakes" meant to make you lean. In the end I could gain weight eating 1200 KCal a day..

I've gone from 204 down to 160 since New Years, my sleep is back on track, I'm rarely hungry and I have a TON of energy. My depression has all but disappeared and my skin is clear for once. Also, even with the rapid weight loss I'm showing no sign of loose skin. I'm 44 years old btw. I feel better than I have in years and I'm only 3.5 months in!

      aren't you concerned that you are not eating enough? I'm all in with the OMAD which is I do as well, but combining this with a 3 day fast once a week and a week long fast once a month does sound like you are not consuming enough calories. I wonder if this type of approach slows down metabolism?

    • @happycappybts
      @happycappybts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I'm not concerned. I keep my insulin levels low through keto and fasting so my body is using my stored fat for energy. The extended fasting actually boosts my metabolism, according to Dr. Fung . He says that 4 consecutive days of fasting actually increases basal metabolism by 13%. It's not about calories ( although my omad is hearty) but insulin levels. I still have 40 lbs to go and when I hit my goal weight I will do my extended fasts a lot less often just for the autophagy. On metabolism, Dr. Fung says "In order to fix our broken metabolism, we need to allow free access to the energy contained within our fat stores. We need to allow fat burning (lipolysis) to proceed normally. We need to lower insulin. The answer is low carbohydrate diets, or even better - intermittent or extended fasting." If you can, get Fung's book 'The Complete Guide to Fasting" from the library or bookstore. I was worried about my metabolism when I started, too, so I read all his books. It's super fascinating stuff!

    As a physicist, I object to the characterization that physics has anything to do with calories in = calories out. The first law of thermodynamics applies to a closed system. The human body is not a closed system therefore the law cannot be applied. Every physicist knows this. This is does not preclude a theory where calories consumed must equal calories expended, however, the law itself cannot be used to justify that theory. Don't blame physics - blame ignorance of physics.

      Andrew Logan well stated

      Basically, it you enter a calorie deficit, that is, more calories expended than retained, you lose weight. As much as Fung discredits the importance of caloric balance, he continually refers to it in his narrative. He does a fantastic job of articulating the nuances biochemistry, nutrient partitioning and metabolic adaption, but body-weight ultimatey comes down to calories in vs calories out - and Fung knows it. Everything is physics.

      @Armenias Thunk he didn't mis-state it, I think you just misunderstood the point of Andrew's statement. His purpose was not to contest Dr. Fung. Read Again, he was corroborating it, in his own way. Look closer at what he mean when he said, "preclude", and what context he actually meant it in. And read very slowly and carefully the fullness of his statements. But I can see where one might easily misinterpret due to his opening sentence.

      Andrew is not pointing at Dr. Fung. It was other people's idea that thermodynamics can be simply applied to metabolism. Those are the one's Andrew is pointing out.

    40 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. I was told to shoot insulin; I declined and got a 2nd opinion. The 2nd opinion was the same and I looked for another. I found an MD that believed that diet heals, not a holistic doc, an MD. He did a 15 hour glucose and devised a diet just for me. He also suggested insulin, but was willing to treat if I signed a waver. I beat it and did not have to use a drug all my life!

    Dr. Fung and his information have changed everything for me. Down almost four sizes, getting great muscle and feel sharp and amazing. I turn 55 this week and feel better than I have for over a decade. My genetics and family history say I should be diabetic, but instead, I've optimized my glucose levels. Good stuff!!

      That’s awesome! Do mind sharing what you eat? I’ve struggled even on low carb and intermittent fasting. I’m currently calorie counting and losing but it’s very restrictive! 😊

    • @ajgazaway9660
      @ajgazaway9660 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, I've had genetic nutritional counseling and protein is a preferred fuel source for my physiology, and low carb is optimal for me. I do not count calories, I eat only whole, real food. I eat a lot of eggs, butter, olive oil, chicken, fish, some meats, LOTS of non starchy vegetables. I do almond milk and some heavy cream, I eat some cheese, I prefer higher end cheeses! I do eat nuts, and I refuse to give up peanut butter. I love it too much. I do a little coconut oil in a few things, but am not a huge fan. Only if I make a dessert thing. I eat NO sugar. Stevia and monkfruit only. No soda, no juice, I don't drink alcohol either. I put lemon, berries and stevia in water for a "juice." I rarely eat out, I cook my own food from whole ingredients. Also, I'm very physically active. 5 years ago, I needed four surgeries to walk again. I was told I'd be an invalid by now, Lyme disease gave me severe rheumatoid arthritis. I didn't accept that. I now lift fairly heavy weights in the gym, and am more muscular than I was in my 30's. So, I think it's the holy trinity of fasting, eating a healthy low carb diet and exercise significant enough to stress the body and build notable muscle. And yes, I have bigger biceps than most any of my female friends, and I LOVE it!!! On gym rest days, I try to walk several miles. My whole life has changed. OH! I just graduated from college, Cum Laude, last week, and I credit fasting for the brainpower! So, that's my routine. Good luck!!!

    I would have liked you to go a little more in-depth regarding the hormone spikes/ cravings for women during the menstrual cycle

    • @davidlegkodukh6969
      @davidlegkodukh6969 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This response is very late but essentially cravings during the cycle are usually substituting for something that your body desperately needs so if you're craving a certain item you should look at the nutrition facts on the back and see what kind of ingredients are inside that product that you might be lacking in your daily life.
      There is also a possibility that your cravings could be from an addiction to a certain nutrient or additive and there is always that possibility.

    Finally, some one who thinks simplistically enough to ask the questions and work through the problem with truthful understanding. Thank you Dr. Fung. Knowledge is power. I know now at 72 years old and in the pre-diabetes state, I can make the changes to lose the weight and lower my A1 C to avoid diabetes It all makes powerful sense. I am not too old to change.

    This has changed my perception of food COMPLETELY! I've been intermittent fasting (16/8) for about 20 days and, even though I did it at first to lose weight, I stayed because of the way it makes me feel: I don't feel hungry all the time, I get full faster with less food, I drink more water, I'm capable of working out first thing in the morning (6am), my skin is clearer... it is really amazing.
