    More excellent content, Jeremiah. I intend to extrapolate from a couple of your findings, and develop a new load for my Armalite AR10.
    As usual, your work here is very thorough, and well presented. Sharing the results the way you do with these Handloader TV videos, is also much appreciated. 👍🏿

I would be very interested in hearing how they performed. Of course cross reference the loads and start at minimum but I think you will find good results along the way!

    I have been loading the 308 since I started hunting with my father. We load a 150gr Sierra BT. The largest animal I have taken with this load is Elk. The last Elk was somewhere around 350 yards.

    You mentioned the interchangeability of a 308 Winchester and 762 NATO cartridges. However you neglected to mention the fact that due to thicker brass on military ammunition the case volume differs. I have always been taught that this, depending on the load you were working with, can you increase pressures. I have always been instructed that if using military brass such as lake city, you should decrease A maximum load by 1 grain for 308 (762x51). When applying this to 30.06 ( 762x63) decrease a maximum load by 1.5 grains! Once again this only applies when using military brass for a maximum load for data designed for a civilian cartridge. As a sidenote this does not apply to 223 versus 5.56. Incidentally I don’t base this off of Internet lure (there certainly is enough information out there as it goes something like this my uncle’s twice removed once told me LOL) This information that I received came directly from members of the US Navy marksmanship team. I am interested in your thoughts on this matter.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed Military brass does tend to run thicker and as a result they have less case capacity and this increases pressure with the same powder charge. I am not aware of any general rules for reducing loads by a set amount but rather I use velocity as a guide working slowly from starting velocity all the way up to maximum velocity. Generally speaking you can have pressure and velocity changes anytime you are switching brass it is just more noticeable the greater the difference in internal case capacity. This honestly applies to all cartridges. So I agree in full with you that there is truth in this statement I would say it can also happen with .223 and 5.56 as well it is just typically not as drastic. It really just depends the best thing to do it test it and use velocity as your guide. Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment! I hope this answers your question and if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask! --Jeremiah

      @@HandloaderTV I have seen reductions of 8-12% mentioned in manuals. The heaviest 7.62x51 mil brass I ever weighed was CBC, coming in at a massive 203 grain/avg!!! Way, WAY over US mil brass weighed.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JF-xq6fr Indeed case capacity varies greatly the best thing is probably to measure how much case capacity you have and compare it to known loads and case capacities. That is a great bit of information and a massive difference in case weight and I am sure case capacity as well. Thanks for sharing that info! --Jeremiah

    My experience with slower ball propellants (H414/WW760) in my .243 is magnum primers cut group sizes and especially help with fliers. Comparing CCI 250 vs 200s' this was very evident, and my particular rifle liked the loads 'hot' for best accuracy/node alignment. Have to look but I think it even held true for slower conventional propellants (H4350 and IMR 4831) with load densities near compression. Nice video Jeremiah.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      W 760 is a great powder for sure it is a little dirty and sensitive to temperature swings but it does often yield good groups in spite of that. What you said about load densities is absolutely correct and may be one of the most influential factors to finding accuracy. Finding a propellant that matches burn rate and case fill for a given cartridge is one of the first steps I conduct for load development. Very nice video. You really have to marvel at the inherent accuracy of the 308. Across a wide range of bullet sizes and differing powder charges the accuracy remained excellent. The ballistic engineering on this cartridge is absolutely amazing. Few other cartridges if any can match it. Also interestingly you shot Barnes TTSX-168 grain bullets (with very good accuracy) out of a gun with 1:10 twist, I believe it states for guns with 1:9 twist or faster right on the box of bullets.

      Thank you very much. Indeed as much hate as the .308 has received over the years it really is a proven performer. Indeed a very versatile round indeed and one of my favorite cartridges for that reason. That is interesting I am sure I checked that before shooting but I can not recall it off the top of my head. I have had that happen before though where a bullet has a recommended twist rate and you actually have more wiggle room than what the manufacturer claims. A great tool for that is the Berger Bullets stability calculator and I use that quite a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

That way the viewer gets an idea of what they can expect with minimal load development. Most rifles I have found can be tuned quite easily to shoot 1/2" or better with enough load development. I can always come back and do another video on refining or verifying loads. I will say that I shot that Sierra matchking load yesterday and at 400 yards it put 5 shots on a 4" gong I am not sure of the group size but it rang it every time so it's a more than capable load at distance. I do like the variety that you do for sure. With the way barrels are, do you think that one rifle can be a representation of what people should expect? As you probably know, barrels can vary widely in what they like. I've had and seen other 308's that wouldn't shoot varget with 175 smk's very good at all and that combo shoots in just about every rifle. I'm not trying to split hairs here or anything. just more of a conversation thing.

      @@reloadingfun I think it is something we need to do I have been toying with the idea of either taking the best loads and shooting them at long range out to 600-800 yards or just reworking the loads at 100 yards and showing how much tighter the group gets with fireformed brass, bumped shoulder etc.
      I am glad to hear that I do my best to switch up powder and bullet combinations as much as possible. I would say yes and no to that, It really depends I think a sample size of 1 is tough to make any final judgments on but it can give you a rough idea of what to expect. The real benefit I see to it is if you see companies like Shilen, Proof Research etc that in other videos and tests we have conducted perform equally well then I think you can get a much better idea of what to expect. Which is why we try to keep our testing protocol the same from video to video and try to shoot in similar conditions as much as possible throughout the year anyway. Indeed though you are correct one load in one barrel does not mean it will shoot well in another barrel. There are also many factors that contribute to that as well. I will say in a quality made barrel you can often times get a given powder or bullet combination to shoot well if you do enough load development. If it does not like said powder or bullet combination and you know it has performed well in other barrels and no amount of tweaking helps then I would certainly question the barrel quality. I will say that 90% of the quality barrels we have tested so far come up with a good group within 5 different charge weights from minimum to maximum. You can get a good overall picture of what we test by checking out our Load data website and typing Handloader TV into the search bar then you can see every load we put through a said rifle. I have heard that in the past, Alliant also claims that Reloder 15 is the current powder (I will paste a link at the end of this comment) It is quite difficult to duplicate the components of the military loads but duplicating the ballistics is actually quite easy! And I would put my RL 15.5 TS duplication load against any M118 LR and I can about grantee it will match or exceed ballistics and accuracy of M118LR. And it's much easier to use existing components to do so. I also have an AR chambered in .22 Nosler as well so perhaps a two part video would be in order. I will say the Noveske is quite accurate and is my go to coyote rifle. Great job Jeremiah. I’m going to have to try the N135 in my rifle. I’ve been loading with N550 for a few years now. My rifle only has a 16.5” barrel being it’s a semi auto made by FN and has the 7.62X51 chambering. Also going to have to try the Reloader 15.5 with the 175 grain SMK. I recently picked up a few boxes of the 175, I have been shooting the 178 ELD-X primarily. I’ve been looking at a company that makes match barrels for the FN, they use barrels made by Lothar Walther. Have you had any experience with Lothar Walther barrels before? Please be safe and God Bless you.

      Thank you very much we greatly appreciate the kind words! I do like N-135 with the lighter bullets in the .308 WIn. I also like N550 as well it's a great powder as well. I have been extremely impressed with the Reloder 15.5 Powder that is a load I put a lot of thought and development into. I sadly have very limited experience with Lothar Walther barrels but from what I have seen has been very very good. Quite accurate and they seem to be of great quality. I don't think you'd be disappointed based on my experience so far. Thank you and God Bless you as well! --Jeremiah

    • @HandloaderTV

      It is semi portable the legs are adjustable and removable with a few tools but it still has a large footprint. Sadly though the company is no longer in business so finding one for sale is not an easy task these days! They are great benches but I probably won't do a video anytime soon on the bench since they are no longer in business and finding one is not easy these days. Offer your 28/30 Nosler ammo at the price of a 308 and I’ll buy a Nosler rifle

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't load 28 or 30 Nosler for the same price as .308 and I highly doubt that Nolser can either. Just like I can't load .308 WIn for the same price as .300 WIn Mag. There is just a lot more powder in those cases and what you are paying for is the increased performance of those cartridges. For some that is worth it and for others it is not, that of course is up to you to decide. I doubt they'll ever be able to offer 28 Nosler for the same price as .308 though. At any rate thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

      @@HandloaderTV yeah I agree it was an apples to oranges comparison, didn’t mean it to sound as dumb as I did. 308 is 45ish grains of powder vs magnum loads in the 70-100ish. So double the price would be about $3.50-$4.50? Plus supply/demand… I get it…. Again I was just whining

    Get your facts straight it was right after WWII not WWI.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was actually right after World War I several countries were experimenting with self loading or semi auto firearms and the US was no exception. Take a look at the .276 pedersen. That was in 1923 if memory serves me correctly. It was from these experiments that eventually lead to the .308 Win. Of course it was not adopted till after world war II but the experiments that lead to the development were well underway. At any rate thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. --Jeremiah

    • @michaelmichaelson8452
      @michaelmichaelson8452 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 276 Pederson was loosely based on the 30-06 and was a full length cartridge. The 7.62x51 NATO came about after WWII while NATO was formalizing weapons and ammunition there were already several short action .30 caliber cartridges that were experimented with the 300 savage, the 303 savage even the post war Czech 7.62x45. I recommend you read the FAL story and "The book of rifles" by W.H.B SMITH&JOSEPH SMITH. There are some interesting things in these books, which discuss the Belgian 7mmx51 and the T65 (7.62x51) aka 308 win. In Smiths book chapters 61 is a good account of how the 7.62x51 NATO was developed and in the FAL story you learn how the Belgians developed the 7mmx51 and got past every American excuse not to adapt it. Bottom line it wasn't made in America even when the American rifle performed poorly in testing and the FAL performed outstanding in both calibers. Sorry if I came off wrong or rubbed you the wrong way. I have studied US martial weapons and ammunition for years and have an extensive library.
      May I make a friendly recommendation that you research more indepth material and use more than one source for your videos.
      And please don't get me wrong I like the 308 Win/7.62x51 NATO I have several rifles chambered in it.
      Respectfully
      Mike

      @@michaelmichaelson8452 Indeed it was and that was created in the early 20s and it shared the same parent case as the .308 Winchester. As I stated in the video it was those experiments that lead directly to the development of the .308 Winchester. I think my facts are correct is all I am saying. I mean no disrespect at all. Indeed there were lots of cartridges that were experimented with as stated in the video. These lead to the development of the .308 WIn or 7.62x51 Nato. I would have loved to have gone into the details of the NATO standardization and all the rich history around that. However for times sake I could not go into great detail in the video. I am familiar with a lot of that history behind the NATO adoption of the 7.62x51 and a lot of the cartridges that were in competition with it. It really is quite interesting. I will have to check out the book you mention I always am looking for reference material I have a library of 50+ years in my office and I may even have a copy in the office somewhere. I referenced several ballisticians and spoke with them about the cartridge and reloading manuals along with Ken Waters Pet Loads. I always try to reference more than one source and I do my best never to use a single source to get my data. That is okay, I have no problems taking constructive criticism and I appreciate it when mistakes are pointed out so they can be corrected in the future. I know there was a typo in this particular video. I am always trying to improve our videos and make them better and provide the best information possible. If something is correct I also have no problems defending it either and backing up my statement. You can verify what I said in the video with the Western Powders loading manual along with the Sierra loading manual to name a couple of sources off the top of my head. I know it wasn't until 1944 that experiments with the .300 Savage but the experiments did start around World War I and those experiments lead to the development of the .308 Win or 7.62x51.
      I appreciate the suggestion and the fact that we can have these discussions on here in a civil and orderly fashion with the expressed goal of learning more. I honestly think that is what the comments section is all about. I feel it adds a lot of value to have constructive criticism and conversations here where folks can scroll down and read all about a given subject. I appreciate you taking the time to add that and the respectful manner in which you did so I really appreciate it and I hope I did not come off too harsh in my comments I meant no disrespect. I truly think it is wonderful that we can have such debates. I have learned a lot from them and from time to time they get me to crack open a stack of books and read and do some research. I think that is fantastic! We must never stop learning. Thanks again for watching the video and commenting! --Jeremiah
