    Pity you choose to show driver's side and not passenger side. Removing the spring assembly from an mk4 golf on the passenger side is much more involved with the half axle.

      No it isn't. All you do is pivot the hub assembly and shock towards the front of the car and they come out and go back in just as easily.

    I tell you the pros and cons of these how to videos.Pro, they show you, with the correct tools at hand how easy the job is. Cons, they con you in to thinking it takes about 7minutes 30seconds to do the job. Over the course of two half days I managed to get my front and back done. Shocks and 35mm sport springs. 7 and a half minutes isn't reality. I know, it's edited. But there is no perfect world w here those bolts come out so easy! The rears, not so bad it wasn't over difficult. But while I was busy I had a mechanic repair an inner cv boot and replace a outer. This dragged me back in time when he needed a second had but such is life. So the fronts! Passenger easy enough, driver side, not for the faint hearted! The biggest fight I had was the 18mm bolt at the back / base clamp for the shock. Oh my god! With the nut released it was put back on a couple of threads, I had to tap, to try release the bolt. When I got a few mm i copper greased it. Back in. Copper grease the nut side, basically like a swing back and forward for over an hour! Once out you realise the threads and housing had created a tube shape which I took a wire brush to. Copper grease, had sex with the housing using a perfect size screw driver plus copper grease. Once back building, Just fell in. The rest ain't too hard, passenger side again, the rubber support he took out, don't do it! Open the top one. Apparently the bottom break, so game over for now! Patience, copper grease and a wire brush. Also a buzz gun and deep sockets for the top bolts.Drivers side, all as mentioned on passenger but you'll need to undo the cv bolt be for you Jack that side up. It's to release the cv when you remove the 3 x 13mm wish bone bolts. Get a Jack ready to support the disc etc. The drive shaft hits the engine bay frame when trying to remove the shock by 'simply tapping it with a small hammer' yeah right lol get a block of wood, a metal bar or similar and ease it down left side, right side but as on passenger side, tap a large headed flat head screw driver in the split point at the back of the base of the shock. He also failed to mention there is a ridge on the shock, feed this into the split on hub to accept the shock. Stop when you meet both metals. So yes, bolt back up once shocks built etc. Not over traumatic, but you'll be there about 5 hours with cig and tea breaks. Also the spring compressor, who has one in their drive way. Be very careful with spring clamps, hands out of all strike areas, no matter how comfortable it is to hold! Either way, I've said the guts of ho to do it, fire away, have a go. Just don't say, alright love, I'll be back in 15minutes after a pop these shocks out and upgrade to a new set. You'll get no sex that night if you do cause you'll be called a lying bastard! :) basically... Not a nightmare but you'll not be done in 15 - 30 mins if it's a mk4 golf. Have fun busting your knuckles guys :) also, use a Jack at all times under springs to release the pressure from axles.

      Open Minded But Cynical....You're right, I mean they're good vids but he's got everything at hand never and I mean NEVER makes mistakes...I'd like to see the outtakes though and see how many arse ups he actually does. But as you say they'll "take on board what's you say" or do they?!...but that's it, if well..

      I’m about to embark on this soon; front drivers and passengers side. My Mk4 Golf got an advisory for the upper attachment, guessing that’s just the bushes? It’s gonna be the same process though isn’t it? 🙄.
      This is the most German video ever. It does look so fucking easy when you have all the kit these boys do. Surprised they didn’t jack up the brakes like you said. It can’t be good to have them unsupported like that. Wish me luck guys. Just got to get some cheap spring compressors and I’m off. Unless these lads will let me use theirs? 😂

    At 6:14, mechanic did tighten the nut with impact wrench!!!
    Your fired!! Auf wiedersehen!
    Don't do that on your car, you will damage the shock absorber before installing on the car.
    It's also against shock absorber manual and warranty!

    2'11'' hammer is wrong tool to extract shock absorber from bearing housing. It's necessary to dilate hole in the bearing housing with something like a big flat screwdriver or a wedge or a chisel and the shock absorber will drop down with no hits.

    Dude great videos, can you do one for replacing a mk4 2.0 8v water pump and timing belt or a clutch? I will be doing these jobs in a few months on my girlfriends golf.

    I bought new front shocks, Sachs. The shock piston does not extend on its own, actually it sinks down under its own weight. Any other shocks I've seen, extend themselves. I emailed Sachs, they said this is normal on some of their shocks, but I don't know. My car is so bad over rough roads and bumps now.

    That hammering takes a lot longer than in the video especially you don't use wd40 and torch. Its the hardest part in whole job...

      Use the spreader tool, made by metalnerd and others, a 3/8 to 1/4 drive adapter can be ground down to make the tool. Makes it slide off easy.

    This videos are too simplified!! It is much harder to put new one in then hammer down the old one, lower mount of shock has to be countered with force to keep straight angle(or pressure from control arm squishes the cv,lower ball joint can also take damage). I had to use chisel to counter/open the mount, and hammer from all directions + tons of wd40. I succedded in 6h.
    Passenger side has separate video, but here it isn't noted!!
