Thanks Prozzie. Yes, I was maybe even more excited to visit 林語堂's home. As a kid, I found some of his books in my grandmother's library, then ended up in Peking is 1979, later later in Taiwan where I still am. Mr Lin introduced Chinese culture to the West. Moment in Peking (京華煙雲) is my favorite.

Prozzie, you outdid yourself with this video. I think talking about what you’re truly passionate about does wonders for the channel and it’s extremely clear from this video how much 林语堂 means to you. I hadn’t heard of him before and there’s a lot of Chinese culture and history that I feel like I need to understand better so I’m going to check him out! I’m amazed by the shortage of videos on the man who invented humor (or at least the Chinese word for it). It’s also pretty stunning that I’d never heard of the 明快 before - that’s super interesting. Maybe the reason why so many people who study Chinese language and culture still feel there a lot left to understand is that we don’t learn about these things in class. I can only speak for myself, maybe others are more familiar with this than I am, but I hadn’t heard about any of this until today.

Great video, Prozzie. I will read this book! I lived in China for a year, and I taught English there. I will be moving to Taiwan very soon to teach English there. It will be interesting to live in a place that is largely Chinese but also has freedom of speech and other freedoms.

His late life in Taiwan presented a lot of sad parts for us, Taiwan guys. So many guys from China, like him, always forgot they would have to stay in Taiwan as their home and only thought about their disappearing home country. Taiwan’s development has been delayed by those guys. They absolutely hurt Taiwan guys, not only our heart but also our future.

林語堂從1933年冬天著手寫作"吾國與吾民"，至1934年7、8月在廬山避暑時全部完成，歷時約10 個月；
於1935 年9 月正式出版，是以中國為題材用英文撰寫的最佳之作，筆鋒溫和幽默，對中國有真實描述。
林語堂的另一部聞名遐邇的大作是"京華煙雲(Moment in Peking)" ，也是他的首部小說，於1939年出版；
京華煙雲描寫1900年至1938年民族主義及共產主義的崛起，以及抗日戰爭發端之時，動盪不安的局面。

感謝您對外國文化的真誠與認知。中國史觀看台灣跟台灣史觀看台灣還是會有不一樣的。舉個簡單的例子，樂團“滅火器”有首歌“1945”有描述到：「我們是戰敗的一方，卻被教導成勝利的一方。」台灣是個歷史複雜且悲慘的地方，可以用很多不同角度來看待，讓人們學到更多。感謝你對台灣這麼有興趣。
我到覺得台灣是戰敗的一方也不是台灣本土史觀，為什麼被壓迫受殖民的台灣要站在日本官方立場。

京華煙雲是譯作 , 原文是英文! 關於此譯作則有不少佳話 , 據說一部份為郁達夫先生所譯, 當初郁達夫是林語堂欽點的譯者 , 但郁達夫後來死在新加坡 , 譯作據說後為他人完成, 兩人譯筆才氣據說相差之大 ,不可同日而語

我身邊也認識一些外國朋友, 我都以簡單方式教他們台灣與大陸怎區分?因為兩岸都使用中文,文化也類似,就好比南北韓,這些老外就比較能理解,我告訴他們,只是南韓比台灣幸運,他們撐過韓戰,美國基於自身區域利益,並沒有跟南韓斷交,而南韓依然獲得聯合國的承認,其中一位韓國友人同情台灣目前的處境!
你用南北韩做类比，那应该是中华民国史观了，不知道绿营的朋友会怎么跟外国朋友解释，外国朋友听了两种解释会比较认同哪一种。
