Not sure if you'll see this comment mate but I watched you back in the early Cmilk days and have recently started watching your videos again. These chat and ride videos were always my favourite and would love to see you do more of these. It's this kind of stuff that brought me to your stuff originally, simple and effective. It's a great way to learn about your day to day experience and see the country. You seem a lot more relaxed and happy these days and I think Taiwan is definitely the right place for you. Keep it up mate, this is decent, simple, no nonsense content. Also you and Allan are a top duo, really like the videos you both do together! Stay safe and take care.

Yea I’d like to try a bicycle but I’d rather die most of the time. I COULD Bike one minute to 711 or I could scooter there in 30 seconds. I COULD bike to work in 25 minutes or scooter in 13 minutes. There’s a big difference between riding a scooter in 35C heat vs a bicycle. I’m not discounting your alternative because it works and my fatass is over here making excuses but the heat man...I’m ape level hairy and moving under the Taiwanese sun is torture for me and the unfortunate class of 5 year olds awaiting my smell when I finally get to work on a bicycle

@@steve00alt70 Taiwan's not bad on a bicycle at all. A bicycle in Asian traffic is in some ways safer than USA as you're understood to be part of traffic, and most everyone with a license for a 4 wheeled vehicle has been on a two wheel vehicle in the past so they have some amount more empathy. Only in USA have I been harassed on a bicycle by cagers or gotten hit.

For me I lost weight living in Taiwan and when I got back home to Australia I put on about 10kg. In Taiwan I didn't have a car or scooter so I walked everywhere and took public transport as well as rode the you bikes around the Taipei riverside parks at night but when I got back to Australia I lived at my parents place which was rural so I couldn't walk anywhere and driving 20 mins minimum is the norm. Also even though I never cooked, the portion sizes of Taiwanese food is much smaller compared to Australian restaurants where you pay double the price but get 40% more food that you feel you should finish. I've now moved to the city to a very convenient location like in Taipei so walking much more and exercising more as I've got walking paths near my house as well as shops in walking distance.

    • @GilBatesLovesyou
      @GilBatesLovesyou 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I lost weight just in a 2 week trip in mainly Taipei just from a lot of walking and riding bikes. I went from 106 to 103kg in 2 weeks eating whatever I wanted. I think, though, from my experience in Tainan, though I had a bicycle there and didn't use public transport (my friend there was a bike racer and insisted taking me around by bike) people seemed chubbier by a little compared to Taipei. The rest of TW seems more scooter and car reliant overall, since there's no MRT in Taichung or smaller cities, and buses don't come as often or have as many stops as in Taipei.
For me my bigger issue more than just walking (though I feel a million times healthier walking 5-10km per day like I did in Taipei, and even recover from lifting better with those walks) is stress binge eating back in the States. I'm very much the opposite of Prozzie in that if life is good I find it easy to moderate my diet and exercise, but if it's the opposite I tend to binge eat, not sleep well, and struggle to exercise, no matter what country (in Vietnam I was very stressed and would binge eat whole boxes of bon-bons and similar, so it's not just USA.)

So excited to get a chance to look at Tainan. We are relocating there after living 3 years in Vietnam! so happy to hear you use the word relaxed so many times when referring to your life in Taiwan. We are looking for a recovery year after having lived in Vietnam for so long. Our two visits to Taiwan, only in Taipei, inspired us to relocate when the opportunity served itself. CV19 caused some problems but we will be in the country soon enough. When selecting a city we had skipped over Tainan because we had heard delicious the food is there. And I was seriously concerned about getting fat. Thanks for sharing!

I found Tainan interesting, it's in some ways more like VN compared to Taipei. It's definitely not ultra modern like Taipei, and you even see a lot of the same house styles of the 4-5 story mini towers like VN. There was a strong Vietnamese presence of migrant workers there, too. I knew someone that was an expat in TW mostly in Taichung in the 80-early 2000s that described present day Vietnam as being like Taichung was in the early 80s. Strangely in VN I really liked Saigon and southern Vietnam in general, but just had a horrible time up North in pretty much every way.

I gained quite a few living in Vietnam - thanks to traveling everywhere by scooter, and the cheap and easy to get food/beer. I did end up getting in decent shape from just jumping rope (and the odd kettlebell swing). Here in Japan I cycle everywhere and cook more, so it hasn't been as big an issue. I think you're right about having a relaxed/content life, definitely less incentive to blow off steam

Every time when I was in Taiwan, I lost some weight, but I gained more back soon after the trip. I think I walked a lot when I travel, but in CAnada, at home, as you said, is very relaxing, and the Canadian food, most of wheats, bread, pasta, cheese, meat.....not like Taiwan, lots of choices. Fresh vegetables were packed from farm yesterday, and next day, on your table. And fresh fruit, fish.....you can gain your health back very fast as long as you reduce the night activities, and get up early, hiking, running, any sport, or even just walking......I am looking forward to seeing your health balance back, you will feel happier physically and mentally.

Jeremy half of For Riel here. 7-11s and beer in Taiwan are a killer, plus those night market street foods are mostly fried food. We have been living in Cambodia for about 11 months now and I've lost about 15kgs without really trying due to not eating a lot of processed foods and smaller meal sizes. Beer and fried chicken wings have stopped me losing more, but I have started EMOM it's amazing and can be done at home in a small space. I'm 6'3 and used to weigh 135kgs now down to 120kgs, 20 to go. @Cameron You are still young. No matter what kind of problem you have, you can fix it. Personally I find the best "first step" to fix any problem in life (emotional, financial, or physical) is to develop a habit of getting up early (around 5:00 am), run (jog) in the cool and fresh air for at least 30 min. When you start your day by expanding your lungs and saturating your blood stream with oxygen, you will have a clear and sharp mind to solve problems and to have creative ideas. It can also get you get out of, or reduce the severity of any mental issues (like depression). Also, eat dark color leafy vegetables. It can help boost immune, reduce depression and dependency on anything else, like alcohol. I hate chewing, and my stomach can't digest fiber. I use a big strong blender to blend the vegetables. I add a lot of other vegetables like carrot, celery, and sweet fruits like apple, banana to make it delicious. These two, exercise and green drink, can help not just your physical look, but your emotional state. Try them no matter what stage you are in life and what kind of problem you have, they produce miracles. Good luck!!

I think I gained weight in my mid 20s from just being lazy and as you get older its much easier to gain weight. I think you should try intermittent fasting 16/8 it really works well for me. I just eat breakfast and lunch and have a snack and stop eating around three or 4 PM and don’t eat again till the next day. I agree with you about running in the city you could always get out to the countryside on the weekends and do some hiking. Come down to Kaohsiung again and we can go on an adventure to the mountains or river tracing.

@@Dowlphin It's more about quality of life. You'll die eventually no matter what you do or don't do. The famous American fitness guru from the 1950s-1990s Jack LaLanne died at 96. His brother who didn't work out at all died at 97. Difference is, Jack only died from keeping on working out everyday with severe pnuemonia, and if he just took a month off he'd probably still be alive now, but he literally did pushups everyday until he died. By comparison, his brother was in a nursing home in a wheelchair for over a decade before he died.

All the extra free time has actually been an issue for me because now I have the time to really find the incredibly delicious, yet extremely unhealthy, food which definitely led to a lot of weight gain. I honestly suggest you join another gym. For me, since I paid for it, I'll feel more pressure to go which has helped me be more dedicated to it. As an added bonus, all the calorie rich Chinese food is now actually good for muscle growth. Glad to hear you're doing well, even if maybe a little TOO well, and hope everything keeps going great for you!

My five cents worth from here in Auckland, New Zealand: Despite walking for 40 minutes nearly every day a few years ago, I was still overweight. I'd heard about intermittent fasting previously but hadn't given it a decent try. Anyway, I started intermittent fasting by gradually moving breakfast further and further back (ie. 9am, 10am, 11am) until I skipped it altogether by having my first meal of the day (essentially still breakfast 😊) at 2pm. I lost 10kg over 3 months pretty easily. Now, I continue to fast (first meal of the day around 12 noon) and am enjoying daily 6:30am 30 minute jogs. I seldom snack between meals as this is a sure way to gain weight. Intermittent fasting may not work for everyone but has worked wonders for me. Weight loss is 90% diet, 10% exercise I reckon.

Intermittent fasting works with training, however, as you get older you lose muscle mass and so you need fewer calories to maintain weight and instead you gain it. You need to do both Cardio and Muscle Building exercises. If you just diet, you will lose both Fat and Muscle and just doing cardio as you get older will cause you to lose even more muscle mass, as the body starts to eat the muscle for fuel during cardio workouts. Doing weights or bodyweight exercises along with cardio and a good diet will stop muscle loss. You can gain muscle with training well into old age. It's also worth adding in at least Yoga once a week for flexibility as you age.

3:20 Fajitas (anything with tons of vegs) is actually a perfect meal....if you were to reduce the protein quantity by about 80-85%. One bluecorn taco is only 5 calories. And hey, you don't have to be perfect. If you get it down by 50% you'll still be way better off.

Thirty is around the corner... that's probably the under lying cause. At around this age metabolisms change for a lot of people and often not for the better. When I was younger I could eat all that I wanted and drink whatever and not gain gain weight but at around thirty or so, just like you now, I began to gain weight. At first it was a shock because it never was an issue before but then rather suddenly... bang I started getting fat. I'm sixty-eight now and just had complete blood work done and every thing is tip-top but weight is still an issue and it's something I have to constantly monitor and keep on top of. Read and research and find out what kind of diet {eating lifestyle} works best for you to maintain an acceptable weight, for me it's low carbs and low sugar and low alcohol consumption, one size does not fit all in my experience so experiment... good luck.

Another zero-cost choice is athlethic field in every school, you can run or do some pull-ups in the afternoon.Bring an easy-card(悠遊卡) then you dont need to carry your wallet on, just cellphone(music), towel and sneaker. I gained about 20 lbs in my first year in China and lost some of that during my second year (I’m short, 20 lbs is a lot for me). I was at the highest weight I had ever been at. I was eating like a queen, since my teaching salary was relatively high for the cost of living there. I ate out a lot, I ate street food (not super often, but I still ate it sometimes), I ate more carbs than I normally did, more fried foods, and I just ate more in general because I loved eating all of the new and tasty foods. If you’re addicted to food like me, China is both a great (and dangerous!) place to be.

Cut booze 100% while trying to cut some weight. Do more than you eat for a while until you get back to where you want to be, and just always stay on top of it from then on so you don't have to go back and do it again in a few years. I've cut off 10kg since coming to Taiwan in Feb, and 10kg a few months before coming here, and probably got another 10kg to go. Just take your time with it man, monitor it daily, and make adjustments as you go until you start heading in the right direction on the scales. It's what's worked for me.

If you enjoy running, 爬山 is a good exercise for you. 爬 means climb and 山 means mountain. 爬山 together means mountain climbing, but it’s not really mountain climbing. It’s more like brisk walking on paved, sloped hills surrounded by nature. Taiwan has lots of mountains so you don’t have to go very far to find a mountain. 爬山 is a very Taiwanese thing to do. You can eat much of the food you love, within reason, and make choices of quality food that you'll eat when you do. Experimenting with 1-3 craft beers while I'm eating (feeding). "IF" is good for general health and blood health, Lipids, if you are looking at that yet .. and glucose/sugar levels ... :-) I'd also recommend lo-carb ...except for the beer :-p ... but more meat, seafood and veggies, less noodles, rice and wraps.

    Hi, man !
It's great seeing you riding in Tainan, I used to live in Taiwan for 13 years and Tainan was also my favorite city. Now stuck in Belgium and France, where the Covid situation is not super friendly, so I'm living vicariously in Taiwan through your vids, basking in the nostalgia.
Talking about gaining and losing weight, I've got a funny anecdote : same as you, before 25, I could eat pretty much everything and anything without gaining any kilo. Then, 2 things happened in a pincer attack : age and moving to Taiwan !
In one month, I gained 4kgs. When I saw myself in the mirror from the side, I thought I was pregnant (and I'm a guy) !
Fast forward 15 years later, I had gone through all my 30ies in Taiwan and with a dadbod, and I thought "well, ok, such is life, ever since the 30ies, this is how it goes", I've made my peace with it (it took a few years).
Then, 2 years ago, I started feeling getting choked in my throat, it felt like it was super tight and I could almost barely speak, due to congested vocal chord. I was a teacher at the time and was worried that it was because I was talking too much and srtraining my vocal chords, but when I got to see a chinese doctor, after taking my pulse, he told me "yeah, your liver is messed up".
I was like, what ? Uuuh, I'm pretty sure it's my throat that's feeling the heat...
He then explained to me very patiently that it was actually pretty common to have a congested throat because of liver inflammation (due to bad sleep in my case, I've been a late sleeper for nearly 2 decades), and that one of the ways to make it better was to sleep better, and the other was to cut on spice, alcohol, fermenting stuff (such as beers or mushroom) deep-fried food and sugar. I was already not a spice nor deep fried, nor alcohol consumer, so the only thing that was left for me was to cut out sugar. It was hard as fuck coz I love sweet stuff and fruits (OMG, fruits in Taiwan... Next time you stop by Tainan, go by Lily's fruits kitchen, just facing the Confucius temple's south wall, you'll find some of the most delish fruits of the island served to you on a silver... I mean paper plate).
So, game over for sugar for a few months, hard as fuck at first, then, like everything else, once you get used to it, you don't think about it anymore. And one day, for fun I decided to weigh myself.
    I was gobsmacked !
In the span of 4 months, I had lost nearly 8 kilos !!! My dadbod was gone ! I could finally see my feet again (hello, you beautiful twins) !
And that is only by cutting sugar from my diet ! No sport, no other diet (well, apart from the stuff that I already didn't eat anymore), no nothing else.
People tend to talk trash about fat in food, but frankly, the real culprit is sugar !
I'm pretty sure if you manage to cut alcohol and deep-fried stuff (I know, it's hard), you'll get lean and fit again in no time !

Turning 30 makes a difference. Intermittent fasting, limiting your eating to 8 hours a day helps, it is also good for longterm brain health. Another way some find success is to simply eat half of what you want. People who do that often give themselves one day 'off' a week to make it seem less like a lifetime sentence.

Intermittent fasting works combined with training - I do it myself. The problem you have is, as you get older (over 30 or younger) you lose muscle mass every year, and so you need fewer calories to maintain weight and instead you gain it. You need to do both Cardio and Muscle Building exercises and change the way or time you eat. If you just diet, you will lose both Fat and Muscle and just doing cardio as you get older will cause you to lose even more muscle mass, as the body starts to eat the muscle for fuel during cardio workouts. Doing weights or bodyweight exercises along with cardio and a good diet will stop muscle loss and help you gain muscle. You can gain muscle with training well into old age. It's also worth adding in at least Yoga once a week for flexibility as you age.
