  • How to play Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy
    Thought I would do something special for St. Patrick's Day this year.
    Well who was one of the best bands to come out of Ireland, of course Thin Lizzy.
    This song always takes me back to my teenage years, Phil Lynott was the original rocker. How we miss him so much.
    Whiskey In The Jar is a song taken from a compilation album by Thin Lizzy, originally released in 1996, covering the early part of the band's career. There are various versions of this album, released by different record companies, with the same track listing but with different covers.

    Born and bred in Ireland and proud that I knew Gary Moore as a teenager growing up in our Belfast neighborhood. My cousin, Peter McClelland, was the singer in his band The Barons. They played top twenty songs and Gary was the lead guitarist at fourteen years of age. Peter's son Mark, later became a founding member of Snow Patrol. Gary left for Dublin and joined Skid Row (not the American clowns) but the original group to have that name. The rest is history.
    Here I am now living in the States, in my seventies and learning the blues guitar, and I get distracted by this great tutorial. Very nicely presented and within an hour I've got it down! Thank you for helping us kids out.

      Hi Sam, Great to hear from you and what a wonderful story. To me this is the great part of creating these lesson and getting reply's like this. Not just to have grown up knowing Gary but also having a cousin with such a talented Son. Belfast is trully is a great source of talent over the years. I hope I haven't distracted you to much from your Blues, but the guitar work in this song will certainly help with your Blues playing. I did cover 2 more song by Gary and they can be found on my Premium Channel. Over The Hills And Far Away and Wild Frontier. premium.skypeguitarlessonsonline.com/

    Thank you so much! I’ve toyed with learning this sang a few years ago, but never conquered it. I think your instruction will help me renew my efforts. This is one of my favorite Thin Lizzy tunes.

    I thought you said you were going to play ALL the guitar parts. The electric guitar has no less than 3 parts sometimes layered on each other. But each are different. One of those parts seems to be going through a Leslie. The accoustic has no less than 2 layers. Regardlees, This is the single best tut for this song. I believe there is only one other on TH-cam.

    • @GuitarMates
      @GuitarMates  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, when I said all guitar parts I meant Intro Verse, Chorus, etc. I hope you found the video useful. Thanks for the comments, never knew there was that many tracks to the song.

      @@GuitarMates Oh Okay. Find the best sterero copy you can. For the electric. There is the part you played. Within first 10 seconds plays a scale down and you can here an over dubbed electric with different tone settings and similar notes with a lower gain level. You can really here it at the end of this prelude with that sort of whimsical trip down a scale(almost sounds like laughing) just before the main song starts. The timing of the dubbed in guitar is also seemimgly a bit off. The accoustic sounds doubled. But, it's two accoustics. Left ear sounds different from the more quiet right. I almost want to say the left is Nylon strings and the right is steel. The nylons rythm is different from the steel's. Nylon is like 1&2&3&4& whie the steel is like 1& 2,2&(no that wasn't a typo). Under the lyrics and the accoustics playing the rythm is an electric playing a very basic melody utilizing a Leslie. You might realize you sort of hear the grind or gurgle of the Leslie. Sometimes having the rythm of a horse galloping. This melody somewhat follows the cadance of the lyrics. Under "Now some men like a fishin', and some men like a foulin' ", you hear an electric playing a quarter note melody with the leslie I think. Under it, an electric playing 16th notes(oddly makes me thing of latin music) playing the same melody.
      At about 2 minutes 10 seconds at the end of the second chorus it goes into a solo ending in a rise up to fast high notes. Then right after the drum fill is two electrics. One playing the main melody and another playing the melody but in a different key.
      Actually, If you buy the sheet music, it shows ALL the guitar parts. Including all of the over dubbed parts, Now, I plan to get that sheet music and I will learn it. But, I learn better by listening by ear and also buy watch people like yourself. Download Moises. Its software that lets you decompose the music into thier individual parts fairly well. But it's a long way away from being able to sperate similar tone ranges. So multiple guitars are left together on the same stem. Its a cheap month to month sub. Check it out and then just cancel. Anyway, close your eyes and just try to hear all the different parts. You will. Yes, it's crazy. I'm seeing more and more Whiskey in the Jar tuts.

    Only negative comment is that you occasionally don't state the string your on and you can't easily see which string your pressing. See minute 16:10 you're going quite fast and I had to go back about three times to see that you'd going from the high e to the b. Apart from that a good lesson.

      If I had to do it that way I would have given up after half hour.But now I have practice the intro about 1500 times.Am learning guitar.I lay in bed or sit on couch with my phone and just keep doing it.I think if I can eventually master the whole song I can call my self a guitar player.Ican play saxophone and I can play the intro on soprano sax and it sounds really good.I can play it much quicker on the sax because that is what I know.But the guitar is a different beast and fingers can't go that fast yet so it's more of the same until it happens.Thanks again.
