  • This is the second of seven video training's on facilitating batterer intervention groups using "Another Way...Choosing to Change". This teaching looks at the importance of adult learning activities and the need to tailor the activities to the learners. It offers suggestions such as taking a holistic approach and facilitating brainstorming with flip charts to provide a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience. It also highlights the importance of motivating positive behavioral changes and recognizing familial roles.
Using the example of “describe your clients”, Nada Yorke teaches on collateral subjects such as trauma-informed strategies, secondary trauma consequences, and the value of humanizing versus pathologizing the client. By following these guidelines, it is possible to create an empowering, supportive atmosphere for clients.adult learning is exampled using flip chart activities to increase engagement and reduce resistance.
The flip chart activity is excellent to elicit what the client already knows or believes about a particular subject (i.e. anger, stress, healthy relationships, et al). It is a tool to teach, reinforce pro-social behaviors and increase socialization opportunities within the group process.
This video address’ how to facilitate the activity logistically, as well as how to use the information provided by the client.

Thank you for posting this, Nada! I analyzed this video as part of a college course on teaching adults, and I learned a great deal from your presentation. This is exactly the kind of work I want to do after I graduate. If anyone else came here as part of an assignment, I would strongly encourage you to also watch the first video in this series titled, "Strategies for Engagement and Retention." It offers valuable context on the type of work Nada does with Yorke Consulting and helps lay the groundwork for this second video discussing adult learning activities.
