I will say it doesn't beat Nioh 2 even though it utilized the stances/Yokai powers really well, it just doesn't quite have the same satisfying gameplay and boss fights but it came close. Nioh 2 is still the best souls like with WAY better combat than any From game besides BB and Sek, I loved souls since demons but the combat is so clunky and dated now and wish Elden kept Sekiros fluidity and melee. Wo Long was fun but didn't get into the world, Wukong is a solid blend of both
Hey, I just completed chapter 2 and I think what the old monkey says when you're looking at the painting lends more to your theory that he is in the service of the celestial court. He specifically asked you if you found the secret area, (the ancient Kingdom with the Fuban insect), and then says "the more you yearn for flawless endings, the further you will Stray From the Path". Soooo... literally outright trying to discourage us from the 1 sequence of tasks that gives Wukong his mind in the end of the game and denies the celestial Court control over him
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! This game was my first exposure to Journey to the West and it was a pleasure to learn all about the story and lore. The depth of storytelling in this game is incredible and it's clear just how much passion and respect the developers have for the original works.
yes, but that being said, I suggest people learn more from english speaking chinese diaspora youtubers to know the nuance of the story because, for example there are things in chinese language that requires chinese speaking people to be able to point out the why and the how... I've been watching videos from EmpressXV and AvenueX that covers the game even if they're totally not gaming channels.
Yeah honestly, as a Chinese, just from the pronunciation standpoint of the names of the four main characters of the Journey to the West itself, is enough for me to give a thumbs up already. Most youtubers just butcher the pronunciation by spelling their names assuming by how they're spelt in english. e,g. they'd pronounce 'Sun' as Sun in 'Sun Wukong' when it's technically, closer if they pronounced it as 'Soon' in English so thank you @SamBram
It really amazing that such a small studio fit all of these lore in just 6 chapters. imagine if they actually have time, money, and ppl to make the intended 13 chapters, Really look forward for the DLC.
It's an incredible game through and through. Nothing else this year comes close I don't think. It'll probably do what BG3 did last year in terms of rewards but then should hopefully also get some DLC. Though I'd be curious as to when DLC is going to be set chronologically since if it takes place after these events then will they be giving the protagonist the voice of Wukong? Either way, there's a lot more story to pull from to create lore for additional chapters
I have watched this entire 3 hour video, it took me 2 days but my God. I was not aware of the story in my first playthrough, only on the second one did I start to get more familiar. This entire explanation of the story of Journey to the West that leads to Black Myth was just amazing! I legit think this is one of the best games and story modes I have ever played thanks to this video that clarifies why I made that journey. I didn't get the Bad Ending, I got the feeling it went all a bit too smoothly so I started exploring more and discovering Erlang Shen at the Great Pagoda, getting the true ending, but again, in my second playthrough, everything made sense!
Wow, no wonder I couldn't understand anything from the cutscenes, this story is one of the most convoluted things I've heard, and the fact that it goes back and forth in time and that some characters share the same name (that I cant pronounce nor memorize) does not help. Amazing job putting all this together, now I understand 20% of it instead of 2% hahah.
wow this is an amazing recap, played the game twice and read all the journals but still couldnt put several pieces together. Amazing content and storytelling!!
The journals do tell most of it but the issue I think with a lot of the entries is they refer vaguely to characters. Where some of the stories are also just straight up anecdotal. It relies on a wider contextual knowledge from the audience and took a fair bit of research before I understood each chapter enough to explain it
Splendid! You are destined one sent by the universe to tell us these amazing stories. As JTTW reader, i was not realize the meaning of Non-white, pure, void and able has relationship with Tang Shan Zhang‘s disciples. Well explained and you had done a great job!
Good job summarizing for the English audience. I think you should do a separate video detailing Erlang's family background since he is half human and half celestial. His mother is younger sister of Jade Emperor and the things that Erlang went through against his uncle etc. All of these additional information is assumed to be known for the Chinese market... so English only players are actually disadvantaged here.
First time commenting ever: I was watching each chapter analysis after its respective chapter on NG+ and the entire game took a paradigm shift for me; I developed a deeper appreciation for years of dedication devoted to make such a fun and intricate game - The “Tenet” in Chinese form. The time it took you for the video edits, cuts and factual lore is to be praised and applauded, so here’s a sincer thank you to you, Mr. Bram!
Bro I didnt even know about JTTW only bought because of sick looking boss and ✨MONKE✨ but after this video..... Holy sh!!t that's a story alright, i couldn't understand what would be innthe DLC but now the possibilities are vast. Thank you for this video my guy.
Just wanted to leave a small tidbit about the fuban lore and some general lore; whenever we go to a secret area (kingdom of Sahali, mt mei peak, purple cloud mtn etc) we are going into what the game describes as an obsession. Using the fuban as an example the deep hatred the first prince of sands felt towards the fuban and the yellow wind sage is why the secret area exists. The first princes obsession literally creates the realm we enter. As such we are actually playing from the perspective of the first prince who in the past defeated the tiger vanguard and helped the sage beat the fuban. The destined one we play in game never actually travels through time. In every chapter there is a different character whose obsession is what creates the secret areas (chapter 1 was elder jinchis obsession with treasure, chapter two is first princes, chapter 3 is Erlangs obsession with wukong, chapter 4 is the scorpion lords obsession with killing the duskveil, chp 5 obsession is the bull king and I like to think chp 6 the area where you fight the great sage broken shell is an obsession created by the old monkey wanting to revive wukong)
Fantastic storey telling and editing. Ive completed the game and in my NG+ run im back up to Erlang. I've read most of the portraits and seen a few videos explaining the characters but you do such a great job putting all the pieces together. Earned my subscription!
👏 👏 👏 👏 Amazing video, well done I didn't think I could like Wu Kong anymore than I do now. I spent time reading all of those portraits myself as well and able to piece together some of it. "The one beyond this portrait truly can unravel this mystery." What an amazing game. You don't see artistry these days like this anymore.
I was storming through this game in Chinese and missed out on so much of the lore. Thank you so much. The gameplay is can be improved on some aspects but god damn the originality of expanding Wukongs Lore was done so creatively!! Mad respect to the developers and thank you for making 3 hours of my workday easier 😆
The game also hides a cruel truth deep down that when you find out you know how cruel this world is in the game. In JTTW, there are two major parties: lingshan where all budhas are and celestial court where all the gods stay. They sometimes work together sometime fight against each other but not explicitly. And these gods might seem like good gods but they are not. In the original book, the land around lingshan is actually hell. Human were ruled by yaoguai and become food to them. Skulls everywhere, human fleshes hung under the roof, even wukong vomited after seeing the scene. And this is permitted by the buddhas because who is gonna worship them if everyone is living in a happy live? Only when you suffer enough then someone came to your rescue, you would truely become the follower. And these kind of terrible stories are hidden throughout the game. Not even mentioned that human and yaoguai are actually the ingredients to make celestial medicine to make god immortal. wukong discovered that and basically says fk off and throws his buddha name to the bin. And this draw the punishment from both parties who will never allow such powerful creature exist without their control.
Debate is not supposed to be for winning. Debate is supposed to be for seeking truth. and Yellowbrow has missed the point of debating all together for the sake of being right
your video is so amazing, i never fully understood after finishing the game and watched many analysis videos. Now this finally threads everything together. Thank you.
Ha! About Wukong's love interest, I place my suspicion here for time to test. 1. Wukong actually has never had any feeling of romantic love. 2. The Fourth Sister's character and the tale of Wukong and White Skeleton was spun by Celestial Court actors to fool the Destined One. 3. Fourth Sister will have a revealing act about her story, a guise that the Court forced her to live in her entire life(s). 4. Then, very possibly, this couple would develop true feeling for each other, and thus fulfilling the Court's plan. Because of that, the Court would successfully put control on the Destined One, and summon Fourth Sister to the heaven, back to her cage. 5. The Destined One then would defy all odds and fight his way through the heaven (again). This time he would subdue all, the Jade Emperor, the Bodhisattvas, Lord Lao, and make a pact with the Buddha, guaranteeing his freedom.
Yellow Wind Rat Sage has Samadhi Wind , same power as the Princess Iron Fan , get counter by Wind Tamer of Buddha. ... Red Boy has Samadhi Fire, get counter by Samadhi Water from Guanyi's Bottle.
Holy shit man, I was watching your cyberpunk breakdown videos and I didn’t expect to brought back in for this since I missed this game entirely. Beautiful story, beautiful culture so glad that I can digest it in some form .
I wanted to add something I saw in another video from the channel Yugene Lee. She theorizes the the old money is Xuanzang itself, because He was the only one that put the headband Wukong in the OG novel, and that he's gamble for the true Destined One to break free of the cycle (Also his gamble nature goes with his past reincarnation as Golden Cicada, who was rival to Yellowbrow). Also It goes with how he always listeng to the diferent stories of the past destined ones. On top of that who it's better to highlight the flaws of Wukong that his master Xuanzang (that happened inside the stone). Other thing is that I want to highligth is that the memories aren't the last relic, at least no by themself, the destined one is the mind but without the memories the it's not a completed relic. This explaing also why the Destined One is the life image of Wukong, and the old Monkey should know that to, enforcing that if he is Xuanzang, he is testing the Destined One to break free. Also it's tematicaly appropieted the the Destined one is the Mind because in Journey to the West each of the diciples represents an aspect of the human essence and Wukong it's, of course, The Mind. Finally I really like the idea that the Celestial court knows of the intent of reviving Wukong so the can have a someone with the powers of the monkey king that they can control, and that the Old monkey it's part of that plan.
The four nons are even direct opposites character wise to the for original. Wukong is decisive, knows to differentiate between good and evil, doesn't need to justify his violence and never hesitates to kill evil, while non pure spent his whole life justifying one kill against a good(so to speak) fox. Wujing (Bajie) is full of wisecracks, takes shortcuts and is easily swayed, while non-able is headstrong, direct and blunt and pure in the way of Buddhism (sorta), Wujing is reliable, and industrious, and non-pure is lazy as shit. And the horse was content being barely registered (he's a horse) while non-white had to take center stage.
Funnily enough, the webbed hollow also happens to be your own will printing factory. With the detonation skill of the rat transformation you can quickly grind thousands of will near the pool of shattered jade by blowing up the dozens of cocoons hanging near the shrine. Talk about gameplay and lore integration.
So what’s stopping them from just slapping another engaging band on the Destined One after all the trouble the first one gave Wukong and the Destined One?
Knowing that it was actually 13 chapters game science wanted to give us on the first go makes me very hopeful for what’s to come. With the true ending leaving us like that on a cliffhanger I wouldn’t mind to open the DLC with a boss fight of wukong and the old monkey to give us more clarity of who he really is and his true intent in all this
@ agreed and it’s something I don’t think has ever been done before. I’m all for it and rather or not it receives game of the year next month I’ll still call it game of the year.
My understanding of who the old monkey is - he is either Guanyin in disguise, or Tangsanzang in disguise, and I prefer the latter Several evidences and rationales: 1) The ribbon on his back is a clear sign that he's an immortal. That ribbon is like THE "I'm an immortal" sign Chinese myth characters can pull, 2) He's ferrying us on a boat and Sanzang had quite a bit of focus on the metaphor of "ferrying others" in the novel, 3) He calls Bajie Bajie. Nobody but Sanzang and Guanyin calls him Bajie, people call him marshal, Zhu Bajie, Wuneng, but only these two calls him Bajie, not even Wukong does most of the time (Wukong called him "idiot" most of the time).
It wasn't simply a cruel gloat Wukong said to the bull. He's got lines between lines, as the Chinese language tends to: "I disciplined your brother, now the court won't go after him. I gave away your son, he's now associated with Guanyin and is protected. If your wife gave me the fan, we'd have had no drama. We can't fight the court like this anymore, get real brother, this is our only way out!" Something to that effect. What Bajie did was just pure cruel gloat though. Bajie was on demon time throughout the book...
At this point in the game what I did differently was kill the rat king first and then the second son, but after the fight in order to summon the first son i was awarded with a chunk meat from the rat duo
I think for me Erlang part didnt seem correct maybe is because I watch other videos about Erlang but I think is because I generally belief Erlang helped Wukong because he saw himself in Wukong since he was unable to stand up to heaven himself due to his duty and family background I guess
Some game mechanism around the lore of Elder Jinchi. In JTTW, Jinchi headbutted to a wall to his death, which is why the Wandering Wight does that as a spirit. In JTTW, Wukong hit the temple bell non-stop like the monkey he is to attract the attention of monks to welcome them, which is why the Destined One is summoned to fight Jinchi after hitting 3 bells. If we havent beat Wandering Wight before hitting all 3 bells, Wandering Wight simply disappears and we cant fight him. I think it means he is activated to merge with the goldern Jinchi in the Obsession or appeased/dispersed by the bell. If we already have his spirit, then we have half of Jinchi's spirit before we fight to appease the other half in Obsession.
Correction on 57:18, Bajie's Dhama name is Wuneng "Awaken to Abilities". So Non-Able has nothing to do with the name "Bajie", but to the name "Wuneng".
Correction on 1:52:13, Wukong asked help from a different Keeper, NOT that of the Flaming Mountains. Red Boy did not live in Flaming Mountains with his parents.
Correction on 1:42:19, The Buddha does not have "Celestial Soldhers". The Buddhist Deities live in the West, while Daoist Deities live in the "Celestial Court" (East).
Clarification on 1:52:51, the Four Dragon Kings here were the Loongs of Four Seas, not the ones fought against in game. Similar at 1:58:06, one of the Dragon Kings of Four Seas, not the Cyan Loong four in game.
wukong really is the strongest fighting monkey king 👑 and he's high outerversal and the only thing that was able to control and tame Wukong with the golden headband in the golden headbands what got him killed in the opening of the fight play the true Monkey King rest in peace and let the Destin one rise and take The Monkey King's place
Hello, I’m a fellow console player here(PS5)but I’ve been wanting to upgrade my set up as an better gameplay, resolution and better frames for games likes BMW or Rainbow Six Siege. Therefore is a PC something I should be looking into?
A good PC is going to be far better in terms of quality than consoles will be. You can also upgrade individual components afterwards rather than buying a whole new system every several years. I've only ever bought one complete PC and just swapped out bits and pieces since then. Apex who I mentioned in the video have a 20% sale at the minute so that's a good place to start.
Another massive thank you to Apex Gaming PCs, who were kind enough to partner with me on this video. apexgamingpcs.com/pages/gamingpcs/?ref=sambram
Feature-length videos like this take an insane amount of time to create and are a big risk. This one wouldn’t have been possible without Apex’s support so go check out their range if you want a new PC to make this game look even better!
Also, use my code 'SAM' for 10% off!
people have said that the 4th sister is the wife of one of the previous destined ones, I'm surprised you didn't mention this.
From a Chinese dude, thank you for covering this story with so much respect for both the original work and this continuation. Loved the video!
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! This game was my first exposure to Journey to the West and it was a pleasure to learn all about the story and lore. Yeah honestly, as a Chinese, just from the pronunciation standpoint of the names of the four main characters of the Journey to the West itself, is enough for me to give a thumbs up already. Most youtubers just butcher the pronunciation by spelling their names assuming by how they're spelt in english. e,g. they'd pronounce 'Sun' as Sun in 'Sun Wukong' when it's technically, closer if they pronounced it as 'Soon' in English so thank you @SamBram

from what i understand the majority of it was already made, which is why we’re getting DLC fairly quickly.
Well the game did really well so I’d say they have the money it’s just time
There's only 6 chapters? I thought there was like 17-18

This is beautiful thank you

What an incredible work! Thanks mate!👏👏👏

Just finished Black myth wukong twice. Didnt know the monkey existed in any story outside of the game itself. Makes it so much more interesting 😎
An amazing video! Thank you for making this!

Great video. I beat the game twice understanding the bare minimum. Now I can play it a third time and ACTUALLY know what the hell is happening.

This game was so good
So what’s stopping them from just slapping another engaging band on the Destined One after all the trouble the first one gave Wukong and the Destined One?
The crown wasn't given to him by the Buda. His master put it on his head
His master got it from Guanyin and Guanyin got it from the Buda.
Which was given by the Buddha so same thing
Thats literally the same thing
Because it was from Buddha
Thank you for the video ❤
Knowing that it was actually 13 chapters game science wanted to give us on the first go makes me very hopeful for what’s to come. With the true ending leaving us like that on a cliffhanger I wouldn’t mind to open the DLC with a boss fight of wukong and the old monkey to give us more clarity of who he really is and his true intent in all this
If they released another 7 chapters as DLC that'd really be something incredible. Absolutely love this game!
@ agreed and it’s something I don’t think has ever been done before. I’m all for it and rather or not it receives game of the year next month I’ll still call it game of the year.
@@kingsrow102 it's easily my game of the year too. Granted it's not been the strongest year for new games but this is still an S tier release
Great job I’m been getting my tail kicked after watching this I’m gonna keep playing
We have the potential for a series like god if war but for Chinese mythology and I’m all for it lol
Great video
It wasn't simply a cruel gloat Wukong said to the bull. He's got lines between lines, as the Chinese language tends to: "I disciplined your brother, now the court won't go after him. I gave away your son, he's now associated with Guanyin and is protected. If your wife gave me the fan, we'd have had no drama. We can't fight the court like this anymore, get real brother, this is our only way out!"
Something to that effect. What Bajie did was just pure cruel gloat though. Bajie was on demon time throughout the book...
This is such a cool detail and makes a lot of sense!
@SamBram these little intricate details are what made the game for me. Celestial grade writing, I'd say
Hopeing all the dlc is just us throwing hands with the celestial court. Many of em deserve it
I need Wukong’s energy for my next Zoom meeting. Imagine the confidence!
The gods manipulated the whole thing smh. The Black Myth title is so fitting
At this point in the game what I did differently was kill the rat king first and then the second son, but after the fight in order to summon the first son i was awarded with a chunk meat from the rat duo
in ch2 the vibration and hissing of the sun come from the sun setting in the waters near the kingdom, just a lil tid bit
I will say, this game has made me want to read the original Journey To The West.
The celestial court needs to get that God of War 3 treatment. Sounds like they deserve it.
So keen on trying this game once they remove denuvo
Why does cheating matter in a single player game
@@AndrewAung1992 he meant pirating.
Thought it was the anti cheat thing Denuvo. Pat wants to steal the game and lie about it stating performance as an excuse lmao.
I thought Fourth Spider Sister was turned into the Celestial Nonary pill
This strategy was business. I couldn't do the whole thing with the curio. Taught me how to use spellbinding though.
A little mistake here, Chang'e is a court position, a title for many maidens that is under the moon goddess. Bajie fell for the moon goddess.
If I had a nickel for every time Wukong impressed me, I’d finally have enough for that therapy I keep putting off.
So you're saying Non-Able is not only the GOAT of spirits, but also the GOAT of debating? Non-Able stays winning 🥱
Ironically, Non-Able proves to be the most able
very good video. gets a bit confusing but a very good video nonetheless
2:10:30 2:14:18 During fake Pingping's transformations you can actually see Red Boy's true form for a brief moment.
I think for me Erlang part didnt seem correct maybe is because I watch other videos about Erlang but I think is because I generally belief Erlang helped Wukong because he saw himself in Wukong since he was unable to stand up to heaven himself due to his duty and family background I guess
So non-able is based in every single way
Non Able is too based for Yellowbrow's philosophy. It's a suprise he took the guy in at all
I did not think about what you said near the end...is he REALLY free!?
Correction on 44:50, Jinchanzi is not disciple to Meitreya, but to Tathatata, The Buddha himself.
Father of stones, Son of stones?? What the heck? Where are those guys. Sheesh its so easy to miss ALOT in this game. Too easy.
Fr though great vid!
you get a sub from me
wukong really is the strongest fighting monkey king 👑 and he's high outerversal and the only thing that was able to control and tame Wukong with the golden headband in the golden headbands what got him killed in the opening of the fight play the true Monkey King rest in peace and let the Destin one rise and take The Monkey King's place
I have a 4G unlimited data plan and a two hour video, fuck it we ball.
Just met you in school in preforming arts
Queen mother of the west is daoist not Buddhist
Bruh how many brothers Erlang has
those are his sworn brothers, not by blood relations 😂 but yes there are 7 of them in total
Simpkeeper : Okay no more mr nice simp
so the best will farm in the game is at the actual will farm, thats pretty funny
Why am I only able to give this video a single "like"??!!!
oh i beat erlang but then didn't beat the final boss again so i guess i missed that ending.
