    FIRST. Watch the HYBRID study video • How To Improve CrossFi...
    During this stream, I will explain the reasons behind the setup of our hybrid study. I will address (some of the valid) criticisms from the community regarding our study.
    Towards the end of the stream, I lay out a NEW study we are planning and will answer questions live from our followers on Instagram and TH-cam.

    You didn't mess it up. Apart from some disagreement on terminology, your study was sound. We need more studies in CF

    Perhaps as an alternative option for the next study have 3 cardio sessions (zone 2-5) alongside the strength sessions or wods? I think most hybrid (thinking Hyrox, Spartan, etc) maintain cardio no matter what the other modality sessions they do. I appreciate the interference affect would perhaps be seen and so would be good to compare against the other 2 groups you are proposing? Also add in a 5km run test to give a vo2/lactate threshold test.

    It'd be interesting to see a plot of the raw data, where the x-axis is time (pre or post) and the y-axis is performance on the test, with a line joining each person data from pre to post conditions. And then you can use colour to represent group.
    The reason I think it's useful is that the average performance by group on each test can hide the between-person and within-person variability. You could have a case where a high % of participants had no increase in each performance, but the participants that had an increase have a large increase in performance which is hidden by just comparing averages.
    With the data you've collected you could look at indications the the hybrid training method is universally beneficial for a larger population, or significantly beneficial but only for a select number of people. There may be some interesting correlations between tests - eg. the hybrid method is effective at increasing strength without losing conditioning performance.

      I agree. We have a table with the raw data and effect sizes in the manuscript. Not out yet, but will be soon.

    For the new study design: why not include an "original crossfit group" with seperate training days focussing on strength (classic heavy days), mixed modality metcons and monostructural cardiosessions (pure endurance training but maybe not only "zone 2") spread over a week of training - volume equated with the "commercial crossfit" and "zone 2 incorporated" groups, of course?

    • @wod-science
      @wod-science  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Possibility. We are still thinking about this. I would like to only include two groups. Otherwise it will become too complicated.

    Hey I was gonna try something like this and wanted opinions on 2 different session types:
    1. MWF: full Olympic weightlifting session
    T&Th + optional Saturday: Long zone 2 sessions and/or metcon
    2. 5 sessions a week
    AM: Zone 2 or Metcon
    PM: Lift

    • @wod-science
      @wod-science  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Option two seems to be the most straightforward, given the fact there’s at least 4h in between sessions.

      Option 2.

    I like the new study design and hope you go ahead with hit. I think the starting point of the athlete is important to define for the study ie. Is the athlete deconditioned, beginner or Games Semi-Finalist? What is their training and competition history? Age group? Body composition at the start and finish ie. total mass, muscle mass and body fat%? I would really like to see a good study size, whatever that number may be according to your academic peers but I’m going to guess (wish for) n=several thousand. And, as we are CrossFit athletes/coaches and strive to remain at the forefront of science and integrity of measurement, it would be great if you could avoid that “WEIRD” population focus that a lot of old school clinical trials used to do. I think the terminology surrounding hybrid training is evolving as we speak and you are in a good position to define the vocabulary. Personally I like “concurrent” or maybe “SWOD”. My experience in the last 6 weeks breaking away from commercial programming (ie. strength+WOD in a 1-hour session) and training in the hybrid-segmented-style for Hyrox is that my running has improved (ie. no longer walking in a 10km run piece) and I’ve hit snatch PBs several times after 10 years of concurrent traditional CrossFit programming. Again that’s n=1 anecdata. Thank you for sharing and explaining your research on such a public forum. Do you have any input for Alex Viada or anyone scientific from CrossFit HQ like Julie Foucher?

    • @wod-science
      @wod-science  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for you elaborate comment, fully agree. We will make sure we have an even-ish starting population of relatively experience CrossFit atheltes. If we take beginners, everyting basically improves performance. Have not reached out to HQ yet, good idea to do that.

    Hello! I'm from Ukraine. I am a military man, and maybe you can suggest research and a more scientific view on training that will help adapt to the performance of assault tasks (weight +50-65 kg, interval running, concentration)? At the moment I'm doing a strength + crossfit WOD, the next day - 8-10 km runs (or 400m/400m sprints).
    Thank you for your work, have a nice day!

      HI! This already seems like a great training plan. Separate WODs from the runs as you indicate.

      @@wod-science thanks for the reply, I plan to try the hybrid (as in your videos) - WOD week, strength next week. But now it is not possible to plan in such a projection, because the situation with "work" is very dynamic) Thank you once again for your work and your time! Good days!

    Why did you do CF Total and Fran in Day 1 and 3 tests on Day 3? Would it be better to divide those 5 tests across 5 days in the week?
    What about changing C&J to bench press / shoulder to OH / front squat and change 2k row to 5k? 2k row is not endurance since it’s only a 6-8 min workout.
    I love the study though. I’ll be implementing it the rest of this year and see how I improve.

      1. Yeah we did not want to ask too much of our participants to come into the gym 5x a week. Most people can't do that.
      2. Yep, good idea.

    Design criticism from those seem to be from not understanding there is never 1 study that answers every question. Piece by piece the answers come in.
    Just please don’t overlook the ethical considerations. Pay to play (paying to be a part of a study) is unethical and it needs to be approved.
