- Sometimes you don't have the time or money to send wheels out for powder coating. So what do you do? Dig into the old paint cabinet and get ready to do some work! On this episode of the Dirthead Shed Dave Chappelle goes through the process of prepping and painting an old set of Method beadlock wheels from start to finish.

Filing cabinets for garage storage is genius
They work great and are super cheap used
I have several old filing cabinets left in my house by the previous owners - I now know what to do with them.
“We’re just going for the essence of a good job.” I love it lol, people get way too damn serious about making paint perfect to the point where it gets in the way of having fun. Just mix up a random color that you could never match again and start spraying some stuff.

Those Method wheels may be old, but they've got a beautiful and neo-classic design that will absolutely last the test of time. I love those semi coffin-shaped openings! With enough time and energy those could have been polished beautifully, but, even with time, energy and budget constraints a glossy black ... or many other colors ... could do the trick. I love what you did with them 👍😇

I have a set of gold vanquish (rc crawler) wheels and they look crazy similar..gold, mustard gloss whatever you call it looks way cool on trail.....although I was partial to the green 🤘🏻 great content as always!

That color is rad! Does clear run thru the gun different then regular paint? Always awesome stuff….thanks Dave👍🏻
A little, basecoat has flakes and pearls in it that can flow differently. And typically you want a dedicated clear gun so you don’t get any of those in the final coat

Super rad Dave, wheels are one of those little victories that can be super satisfying! I was thinking when you were holding them up to Moms spaghetti that I would paint pen in the cast in Method letters w black. Cant wait to see the tires! Rock on.
I’ve thought about that. But the letters are deep and sharp. I would need to use one of those drip tools that you can turn off
They turned out great! Like a grey poupon color lol. Makes more sense why you went with a gold steering wheel now. Can't wait to see the truck reveal at moab. Live maybe for a bit?

I was always told that good quality clear will make cheaper paint look better, Than great paint and cheap clear. That's my 2 cents!

With the respirator I thought you were calling it an ultra violent light and figured that was the most metal way to heat your wheels.

to fix runs when its wet i loop painters tape with the sticky side out and dab the run , wait a couple mins and hit it again, love the color dave !!
That’s my technique for getting bugs out too
Wheels look good, Dirthead glossy mustard for the win. Painting the sliders the same color would tie it together.

You need to get you like a media blaster, and get you some corn COB Media It will strip steel or aluminum without actually pitting it or destroying
I had a nice sand blast cabinet. It took up a bunch of space and got used very little.

The wife and I are relaxing for the evening, watching some TH-cam and enjoying the fact that you use baby poop as a color description. Its one of our favorite colors. But one downside to this video. I guess I'm shooting her jeep wheels blue in the next couple days. Thanks Dave. Lol

Looks like Golden Sand Metallic, stock Ford color from '79 and other 70s years. I've got that color on my Bronco.

Spraymax 2k clear in a spray can works well with Duplicolor basecoat and is easy.

I have one of those old filing cabinets. Top drawer toyota engine parts and gaskets.
2nd drawer toyota driveline and bushing parts. 3rd drawer 3 wheeler parts, including a complete 250r bottom end.
Bottom drawer 2 toyota diffs. And transfer case parts.
Way better than the papers they were designed for!

That color reminds me of the gold Honda used back in the 80 on their wheels. Especially for their dirtbikes and 250r's.

I was worried too.. and it had some weird separation going on when I was mixing it
The takeaway was to go for it. It worked well in the end. The issue of the old can primer would have most likely blown apart your time constraints. It will work and add attention to your already recognizable rig as it lives on. Thanks again. Nice having you here. I miss the Dirt Every Day show. That color almost looks like it changes colors some. In some of the light it looks kind of like butterscotch. But others it's more of a burnt orange with a greenish hue. It looks good. You did a good job. It also makes me want Carmel candy for some reason. Lol
