How to do rust repair and prep for paint!

- I really want to paint the Mustang, but first it needs a bunch of rust repair , metal work, and body work. I show you how I go about shaving marker lights, welding up holes, repairing rust, spreading new types of body filler, and end with getting sidetracked on a brake job for the Suzuki Xl7.. all in all its a good productive week in The Dirthead Shed
special thanks to Summit Racing for help with the paint and body supplies
Thanks to UPOL for making Fantastic fiberglass reinforced filler
Thanks to Miller Welders for making great machines that take the abuse I put them through.
Thanks to Harbor Freight for making great cordless tools as well as that old hand shear.

Dave! I’ve got to say dude. I take great joy in watching you perform maintenance on your vehicles! Totally relatable and WAY better than any prime time Hollywood crap! Rock on dude !
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching
This is correct..
So, for anyone considering body work. It sucks. But, my neighbor builds custom cars and stopped over when i was welding a large piece of roof back onto a vehicle a tree fell on. i was worried about the end result and he said, naw man...finish it up, a light coat of filler, priem, paint and itll look fine. Sure as heck, people cant even tell it was ever crushed. Go for it guys and gals !!!
Ain’t nothing to it but to do it
👍👍😎
Oh neat, I have the same kind of copper backer
It does the job
Glad you are putting real paint on it and not some played out typical "patina" look. You already have the best looking Mustang II.
I sure hope it turns out good. Not expecting perfection by any means
“Maybe if i keep my workspace clean, then it won’t feel like it’s such a big project.” so true.
When you fold the lip on the inside of the frender arch, put some wire, like a coathanger in the lip, that gives you a lot more structure then just folding it right over on itself
I’m not folding it all the way over like that
Growing up in Ontario I learned early my budget as a kid didn’t allow for a good rust free car so I learned to make sheet metal parts from scratch,.. so many tools amcan be repurposed , get yourself a chunk of railway track and have it cut down to fit in the Vice. It’s an amazing item to have in you tool kit
I need to track some down…
@@thedirtheadshed “track some down” welll played
Hope you remembered the brisket and spray paint, glad to see I'm not the only one who writes on my hand
I couldn’t find a brisket. Waited too long. Had a Christmas pot roast in the Dutch oven. It was delicious
Never thought I could like that car. Looks great Dave
Thanks. I dig it too
My family had a '74 coupe like this one when i was growing up, so this brings back some happy memories! Fun to watch you turn this into something cool.
Seems like everyone has some mustang 2 or pinto memories
Skip the trim and get one of those rad ground effects kits!😂😂😂 love the looks of those dang things on those musturd toohs!!! Anyhow I know they’re a bundle but I thought I’d throw your there! Really enjoyed that video bub!!!
Thanks. I’m still shopping around trim and bumper options
Glad to see I am not the only one that blows holes in body panels.. lol. 😅
It’s a challenge not ruining it
Friday evening hanging with Dave. You give me way too much confidence to try body work.
Thanks for hanging out!
Another great video. Thats going to be the most rad mustang II around. Can't wait to see the final product.
Thanks! It’s getting closer each day
I like how you use cow magnets. 👍😂
I’m glad you noticed what they were
You keep it real Dave, and I think that's pretty cool. It's the humble people that I admire.
You've got a train load more experience and know how than your demeanor shows. That tells me that you like to keep life as simple as possible.
Thank you for being open and real about it all. As folks would say, you are relatable.
By the way, I like the work on the Mustang II, the car that's ugly and cool at the aame time.
I appreciate it. I have a little experience in a lot of areas. But i have a lot to learn in all of them
@@thedirtheadshed Spoken as a true student and a wonderfully adept teacher. For it is a good teach who is a great student

As a student of words, the more that I grow to know the more that I see that I have to learn.
Nice work Dave! Can't wait to see this thing painted up
Thanks. I have a lot of work ahead of me
Dave! Don’t throw away that Bondo! It is actually useful for woodworking projects, if you do that kinda thing. Filling in dings in wood works great!
I’m not gonna toss it. I’m too much of a cheap ass to do that
@@thedirtheadshed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw the car list when you were mixing body filler. I want to see the drag civic and the 240sx. Love the content keep it up Dave
Top secret stuff
I like the copper backing spot weld trick.
Use it on the next project
Dave, true mechanics let their brakes grind like that. lol I’ve done it almost on every vehicle I’ve had. Even had the pad fall out on my super duty once and get stuck between the caliper bracket and rotor locking the tire in the parking lot. Vice grip on the brake line to get her home!
That’s a bit extreme
Wow, I have the same push broom as Dirthead Dave! I feel so privileged!
Great sweepers shop alike
To be honest, I never liked the Mustang II until this 1.
Looks rad👍👍
Same here. Thanks
Man some “dirt head shed” flannels would be rad. I’d totally buy one
Good idea . This will be my year for swag
Decals down the bottoms of the doors look good
I think if I polish the rocker trim and get it back on we should be good
I think the bumpers are one of the worst parts of the Mustang II. I wonder if there is another car with a thin chrome bumper that would fit. You're doing a good job Dave!
I agree, I’m on the hunt
Coming up on 100k ! woot woot Some of my favorite content on the U tube
Closing in on it!!! Stoked
Just remember, no matter how far you decide to take it, there's a good chance you'll have the nicest looking Mustang II lowrider in the parking lot. Have a happy New Year and I can't wait for more body work episodes!
That’s a true fact. Happy new year to you too
LACE PAINTJOB!! "Rust never sleeps" -Dirthead Dave. Truer words were never spoken.
It’ll get some cool paint…
Mad skills Dave, miss DED but dig your channel!
I appreciate the support. Ded was some good days
You’re my favorite Werewolf Mr. Chappelle.
Rust repair is a true labor of love and takes a ton of your time! But it looks sharp when you get it painted and done. Props to you for getting a plan and staying busy working! Hope you get some time to work on mom’s spaghetti soon!
I got mom’s spaghetti back together. Hope to take it wheeling on New Year’s Day
@@thedirtheadshed 👏 👏 good deal! I’ll be watching for a video to drop, or even better see you out on the trail soon! 👌
I know you have mentioned you plans for the bumpers. I think removing the rear bumper adding a roll pan or shaved look with so old smooth round 50s style bumper or something simlar to the 65 mustang. Maybe not too original but less Uglystang looking.
There is a company that makes “tucked” fiberglass bumpers. I’m trying to get ahold of a set
this will give you good practice and confidence to do the merc 👍
Hopefully it doesn’t just wear me out
very true
Great job brother. Too bad days aren’t 36 hours. Happy New Year.
Tell me about! I’m getting my butt kicked by that quarter panel still
I've been watching this build from the beginning till now dude you have done a wonderful job everything you have done has been top-notch I mean you're so clean and so good with what you do man prompts to you good luck on TH-cam from now on in I will watch your videos when they come out every time so just keep on keeping on bud
Thanks for the support!
Oh hey, good afternoon Dave!
Happy Friday. Thanks for stopping by
The motivation seems hard to muster but yeah, it is making for some great content, and the mustang 2 is like the ultimate underdog mustang, and the algorythym apparently loves it. As far as unique projects go, this is certainly up there. I think we are all learning a ton about it as well, it is a nice legacy to leave, even if it might not be worth monetarily. You wanted cheap fun and this isn't all that critical to get perfect. Big props man, another great episode! Thanks!
I appreciate it. I’m having fun with it
Pros and Cons of a Super Duty Rock Crawler .. Pros - A/C .. Cons- quarter size battery Stops everything ..lol .... Happy New Year Dave.. Bitchin Mustang II
That’s so true… this is for the tow rig though
Keep the trim, everyone should like a little trim.
If it wasn’t so beat up.
@@thedirtheadshed it matches the car, moot point now. 1968 was the introduction of side marker lights or reflective decals. These were necessary for the reduction of T-bone type accidents.
Dude!!! Great job!!! ✌️
Thanks! I’m trying
Good move, ALWAYS ditch the trim. Might consider tighter, smaller bumpers if you can. Keep up the good work amigo.
I have a line on good bumper options
Nice job on the rust repair!
Thank you. It was as a ton of work by the time I was done
Great videos! You mentioned you should be working on the mercury vs the stang. I do the same thing but I use the excuse I am practicing/honing my skills on a less favorable project to help make sure I kill it on a more favorable project.
I think that the whole way through
Fun episode. I enjoy the Stang. Fun car. Glad you are doing the rust repair and keeping him. Good to see the Zuki going strong as your daily. Merry Christmas
Glad you liked the episode. I wasn’t sure if anyone would like it. Happy new year
Man this is going to be the only mustang 2 I’ve ever liked. Would love to order a dirt head shed hoodie. Just saying
2024… my year for merch!
I get that you’re hesitant on the Mustang, but it’s so cool. Who knew?!? I would have stuck with the bright work on the sides. Some kind of chrome bumpers would look cool. But what ever decide will be worth watching. Happy new year 🎉and keep on as you do in the new year.
I want chrome bumpers bad. Not finding the perfect match though
You need to check Fitzee's Fabrications. That wheel arch is easy with basic tools and a lot less work. He is in Newfoundland, we have the rust here on the East Coast of Canada so those repairs are old hat out here.
He is a talented guy
Nicest Mustang number 2 I've ever seen. That's not a compliment 😂
I’m right there with you
I'm just busting your balls, I love these videos.
Rad work and awesome video as always!
Thanks!
Love this build Dave. Happy new year! BTW, buy a shrinker/stretcher.... saves SO MUCH time.
Happy new year to you too! Hopefully I’ll paint it soon!
Aluminum foil works great for covering things when you’re body working or painting👍🏻
I’ve used it for masking engines and parts as well
Awesome work
Thanks Mark
I’m not so sure trim delete will make it look better 😂. I like the look with trim 👍.
I like the look too. We will see
@@thedirtheadshedit's a ton of work to make a trim shave look good. Keep it. Besides the belt line trim suits the vibes better
Karl Fisher on Make it Kustom does rust repair and metal shaping and a lot of metal fabrication. You should check him out; he might give you some ideas. I know he makes some of his own metal shaping tools also. He does a lot of welding also! You might benefit from some of his ideas. Pretty nice guy.
He does some great work!
@@thedirtheadshed he really does. Since you do rig and mig welding, I thought his body repair would be of interest to you.
I don’t know what he’s up to now, but some of the stuff he was doing 2 and 3 years ago was. Pretty informative on body repair and making some of the tools for metal shaping to do them.
Happy New Year’s. Another good one 👍👍
Thanks! Happy new year to you too
Silicone spray better than nothing, but with your fleet and location, set yourself up to spray Fluid Film through a gun! You said it yourself, RUST NEVER SLEEPS!
I actually have a fluid film kit with the gun and all. Just ran out of the gallon
great video Dave thanks for sharing, I really enjoy watch you fabricate all those pieces for the mustang
I had fun making them. Hard to film it and make it entertaining sometimes
Just an alternative - HF has copper welding spoons for pretty cheap (if your house doesn't have copper pipe). Also, you can tack a bolt in the hole, chop off the excess, finish weld... the benefit is less heat in the panel - especially when you have lots of those holes to fill. Summit Racing paint is Dupont - and good stuff, it's been on my fj40 for 8 years and still looks good (at least, in the places where I haven't failed it). My other thing is cheap paint - painting itself takes the least amount of time, but its failure makes all those hours you spent pretty much a waste.
Good options
I wish I was as cool as you so I could join the dirt head club and get a jean jacket.
You can do it!! I need to drag out the ol jacket
My old Mustang 2 door trim decided to self delete. Probably still laying along I5 somewhere in north Seattle if you look for it.
Hahah
Great progress on the Mustang II ! There aren't many left on the road so you'll have a unique ride. Looks like that Suzuki caliper was sticking on by the way that pad was worn.
Happy New Year
Yeah. Pins were sticking, or I might have a wheel bearing going bad. It’s making some noise
Can't wait till the end of the video to see what you did with those lights
The side markers? I weld em up
@@thedirtheadshed I know they made a non-molding style did you see if you could get those lights I know it's too late now just asking
Man I totally feel you I have done so much body work and I love it but hate it My former 2001 p71 crown Vic was house painted literally with a roller and I brought it back down to bare metal reshot it and painted Ford CX Gray ! It honestly took me like 6 months to get a complete and I hated every bit of it but also loved it. Great work on this mustang 2 it's the only one that's going to be one of a kind and badass
It’s a struggle! Makes you appreciate the work others put in
Love the trim delete, trim always cause rust and it looks a lot cleaner without
Glad you like it
They sell cut to fit chrome trim like the minitruckers used, in several different widths as well
I’ve been looking at all the options
🦅🇺🇸💪😎👍 Happy New years Dave. Thanks for the videos I enjoy watching. Yeah I'm gonna watch the next video
Happy new year to you too! 💪🫵🏼
what a funny coincidence this is what you post today. i just had a glass guy come put a new windshield in my 65 buick and he wasn't going to do it because there were a few rust holes. i was planning on ignoring all the rust but after having to convince the guy to install the glass i feel like it should be addressed now. the back window is almost completely rotted out at the bottom. and then you post this. it's a sign
Oh man… better fix it at some point
Happy new year Dave!
Keep the trim. It looks way cooler with the trim on.
I agree.
The reason the bake pads are wearing uneven is because the caliper and caliper pins are worn out. The new pads will wear crooked also. It is not a real big deal. But “good to know”
I’ll keep an eye on it
great tutorial learn a lot thanks
Thanks for watching
Bondo professional gold is good stuff.
I’ll give it a look. Thanks
I did pads and rotors all the way around on my 2014 Sierra with the PowerStop oe replacement parts and now that they are bedded in real good I like the way they stop, much better than the factory pads/rotors that were on it. I only did the brakes because I overheated the crap out of them and warped a couple of rotors. I did front pads and rotors on the wifes 98 Grand Marquis with the PowerStops and those works really good. The oe type parts they sell are good. Happy New Year!
Good to know!
Lookin good my dude!!! Hi from Colorado ✌️
Thank you. Have a great new year’s weekend
Happy Friday when Dave uploads!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 happy new year good sir!
Have a rad weekend!!
Hey Dave, I have a Eastwood fender roller I can dig up if you want it for the front fenders unless you already got it handled. In your area. Keep putting out the awesome content! This is further inspiration to me to finally do some work on my 68 Mustang.
I appreciate it. But I’ll just do a little hammer and dolly work and it’ll go quick
Nice work Dave. Rust repair can be a time sink. I keep telling myself no more rusty New England cars, but somehow they keep showing up. Keep up the good work.
Oh man. You should fly out and drive nicer stuff home
My next project will definitely be from the desert!
Quit talking smack about my favorite car on the internet this car is going straight to SEMA. 😊
It's already not just an old Mustang any more.
Boyd Coddington is smile'lin down from heaven upon you for that front marker light delete 😊
Remember when they designed this car the Jaguar XJC was the only futuristic looking car you could buy.
It’s getting better…. Thanks
Love to see progress on the Stang II. After it's all said and done, if you are not happy with the shaved look you can use a custom vinyl striping kit to get the white trim look back. Thanks for the great content and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Happy new year to you too
Looking good! Love this project, something about the oddball stuff that gets me. I would definitely recommend applying weld-thru primer on the interior portion of your patches, especially double walled areas.
I’m using stainless paint. Really corrosion resistant and weldable. Couldn’t find weld through primer at the time

Thank you
Hey Dave, do you ever use a cheese grater file for rough knock-down when filler just starts to kick? Asking b/c we don't see it. Pretty helpful to prevent killing paper once filler fully cures (as I'm sure you know). Thanks again for all you do to teach all of us!
I do. That’s a great trick. I missed the window on it this day
Great video! Awesome to see the all the bodywork.. I plan on making myself a copper backer for my future gap welding. Thanks for that tip.
Right on. This worked well. I have used aluminum strips or lowering blocks too. But they don’t work as well
Love your work bro. That car is sick.
Thanks!!
I think it looks better without the trim ❤
I like it without. Gonna keep rocker trim though
@@thedirtheadshed I have a 96 f250 crew cab short bed just sitting in my drive way and would love to hear what you would do with it!
I think no side trim is the way to go. And shave the door handles so you can't get in when the cylinders stop working.
Not this time
“ these things are so much easier to deal with then 40’s” 😂 a lot lighter for sure!
Tired of having a sore back every time I move a tire
Using your tricks to work on my own junk!
Right on!
Dave, drop some damn merch already. Thx
Ugh…. Sorry!
Happy holidays and happy new year dave! Keep doing your thing and inspiring the garage fabricators and wheelers. I hope the best for you and your family in 2024. Ps cut, grind, weld, repeat should be a shirt lol

@@thedirtheadshed rad!

Hey Dave, that fiber glass filler you were using what brand is that where did you get it? It looks great. I hate that stuff but it looked like it was working better then mine.
It’s U-pol fantastic glass. Got it at @oreillyautoparts . Super good
Its a lowrider. Shave everything. Lots a metal flake in the paint.
That’s the plan
I think thin bumpers, like off of a 71 Pinto would be a sweet mod. Stupid crash safety! Lol
I have a pinto wagon rear bumper. But it looks huge
Dave, at 27:10 why would you not use an old hot rod trick and use 1/4” round bar to create the wheel lip back?
I’ve done that for drip rails before. Doesn’t seem like the right place for it on here
