- I have been wanting a sliding ragtop since I was a teenager. But first I have to tackle some body work, welding, filler, and primer on the Mustang 2 . This project snowballed a little bit, but came around in the end. What a transformation this little junkyard car has made.

He's a designer. He's a fabricator. He's a mechanic. He's a show host. He's a body man. He's a painter. He's a driver. The man does it all. Killer job Dave
I appreciate the kind words!!
Dave, your channel is growing because you provide a diverse content every week.
Thanks. Sometimes it seems to hit roadblocks, but I think slow and steady will win this race
My 1st car was a 75 mustang ll ghia coupe. I am looking for another. Your car is awesome.
The diversity of your channel is what is making it great. You seem like a pretty regular dude doing some awesome stuff.
In my wildest dreams, I never would've imagined a Mustang II that I liked...and here we are. Wow. Achieving the impossible!
I can’t believe it either. I think they are terrible.. but I keep coming back for more
I used to hate Mustang II's, then your project made me appreciate them, now, after this, I think I actually want one.
Don’t do it… they are still ugly
I’m here for all the mini trucks and mini cars!!!
Me too!
I'm REALLY enjoying the unique quality of this project. Not a lot of people are restomodding or restoring Mustang II's. There's A LOT of mustang builds on TH-cam and a lot of them are fox bodies so I really appreciate this unique build. Thank you Dave.
Yes there is your just not looking
@@tylermemyselfandi8077 never said they didn't exist.
Its such a lousy car, but that makes it an interesting project: can you make it worth owning? What does it take?
Thanks for watching. It keeps surprising me too. I can’t seem to leave it alone
I'm so glad that you guested on Sent and Bent! I saw that episode and it got me back watching you after watching the entirety of Dirt Everyday from initial airings!
That’s awesome. Welcome back
I love your videos, you are the forever optimist. That makes me happy, no Quit in Dave!
Awesome work man. Yeah that drive was a beautiful one! Thanks for having us a long.
Thanks for watching!
So awesome! Love how that came together and provided some rigidity to that "oil-canned" roof! SICK!
I’m stoked that it’s coming back to life
Great narration and video editing. Thanks Dave. Come on guys….. those who watch this tremendous channel and don’t subscribe. PLEASE hit that button.
Yeah!! Thanks so much
Dang Dave you are a hard working fool. Very stylish addition to the Dave Mustaine!
Thanks! Need to get the paint wrapped up before spring!
I'm here for the mustang 2 content. Loved mine before I traded it
I’ve got that in stock
If you know any switchboard builders, ask them for a few solid copper busbar off cuts. If you hold the busbar behind the holes you need to fill, not only does the weld not stick to the copper, it pulls the heat out of the weld so it doesn't warp the sheet metal. I love this build👍👍
I have used that technique in the past. It’s a good one
We used to smash copper pipes flat
I was thinking old copper plumbing, I've used it. Wast to tool...
is that true??? and get busbar off of what??
This is pretty awesome. Just a guy having fun with cars and trucks
True that!
Love your work. Even though whatever your working on might not be my thing. I watch every minute because I respect everyone in the game that does things right. 🎉
I appreciate that. Thanks for the support
Dave making Mustang IIs rad again
I’m trying
That's some shoddy work from the factory the way that roof is installed and the low spots.
Yep. Cheap econo boxes.
It really does have nice lines, especially for a car that was so reviled when it was introduced.
Exactly! I didn’t like them myself
Dude!!! When shining a turd!!! Is always a good thing!!! Good Job!!!✌️
Thanks!
great work man. who would of thought a old mustang II could be cool again.
I know! It’s coming around
That drill bit thing is a great tip
Glad you got something from it
had to subscribe!!!! anyone that has that much love for a mustang II deserves it! i thought I was the only other crazy one that loved them
I appreciate it!
Hi Dave, lve been binge watching your channel since watching your collaboration with Derek over on VGG doing that amazing 4 link set up on his 35.
This Mustang is right up my street, pick something unusual, something nobody else would choose, ratty, tatty, ugly and unloved and make it cool.
Your work is epic l could sit and watch you weld all day (l wish l could weld) already a huge fan keep up the awesome work. A NEW SUBSCRIBER over the pond in the UK 👌🍻😁
I appreciate the support! And I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel
I've seen a few body shops that used a huge round metal disk that had a flanged edge for stiffness that mounted in a large slow turning machine about the size of an old 1/2" drill that has a metal body.
They ran the disk gently over the oil can, on large body sections like the hood or quarter panel, with only a light pressure. They said that it caused a gentle heating of the material, they pulled the "Flattener" away and let the metal cool. This process caused the metal to gently develop tension which made it stiffer and took away the oil can.
This metal disk is like 5" to 7" in diameter, like the lid on the old glass gallon jars. Like the pickled pigs feet or pickle eggs that used to sit on every bar in the country. Turn that lid upside down, put a stem on it to clamp in the jaws of a 1/2" drill.
A key to it is slow speed. Let the process be gentle to keep warping down.
There are guys making small versions of shrinking discs too. I’ve never used one
@@thedirtheadshed That's the name of the part that I couldn't remember
I wish I had half your fab skills, attention to detail and patience. I’ll just have to live vicariously through you with the channel and old DED episodes.
I appreciate your support
I call shotgun as part of the 3 new friends of Dave who get to ride in the Mustang II this summer!! ;)
I’ll be cruising around picking up friends
That’s super rad man, can’t wait to see how this thing ends up. You’re a talented cat man.
Thanks . Itll be fun to see through
Dave, great content! Every time I hear the intro music it's like listening to the soundtrack of an old Need For Speed game. Also, don't forget your hard drive, lenses, mod kit, and cords.
I got all that stuff! And cookies
2.3 Turbo Intercooler Swap, oh and some led bulbs for those gauges, tails, and headlights!!
I can afford gauge bulbs, but that’s pushing it
Never thought I'd ever like that year of mustang..... but you helped me fall in love with it! Turning this car into a cool cruiser! The rag top really is going to set the car off once your done with it!
I’m digging it too!
Who wouldn’t want to be one of Dave’s 3 friends??
Hahah
We never know what you'll be doing on the next episode. Nice work on the body and top!
Thanks !
Great video. Loved the rag top install. Very cool.
Thanks! Need to get back on that bodywork
Thanks for sharing Dave. It’s really cool watching you work
Glad you enjoyed it
More Mustang 2 content Dave, great car, channel and work. Keep it up !
I appreciate that!
I can imagine the whole car pearl white. With blue and purple candy panel job
That would be a good combo!
Cooler than the other cars at the stoplight 😂
Inspiration right there.
Goals are goals
Dave proves with every vehicle he touches, with the right mods anything can be cool and unique. Please keep going with this one Dave! Just keep it ratty enough to still be a driver.
It’ll be a driver. Even if it has nice paint
Jesus, I would have failed a thousand times over in this process. Thanks for showing your struggles with the body work. It looks like a shit ton of work.
It was some work! More than I was counting on. But I’m stoked with the end result. I was wiped out by the time i shot primer.
I had a Street Beat on my Toyota in the late 90’s, that thing leaked out of the box! 😂 Nice to see the quality has improved over the years with the new company.
They were pretty bad back then
If that was my car I would flake the roof so heavy it make a bass boat jealous.
We have similar style
Hands down the best automotive fabrication channel on TH-cam. You win the internet, Dave.
I appreciate it !
Easiest way to fix dents is to cut them off! I like it!
Yep! Replace with vinyl
Gotta love a rag top
Good times are bound to follow
Number of people world wide doing body work on a Mustang II? One! Dave
That’s me
🦅🇺🇸💪😎👍 . You have definitely put a lot of cool in that little car. Great video as always thank you
Thanks! It’s getting there for sure
man of many talents. thanks for sharing . it going to be a really cool old car
Thanks! I’m hoping so
The last thing I need is another car, but this thing really makes me want something fun, cheap, and low
It check all the boxes!
Man you have to put some kind of 70s paint scheme on it to complete the look! Loving it so far!
I’ll get there!
Rag in the stang is sick! Really diggin it. Now you need another one for the. mini!
I know. But I want to make sure it’s not a leaker
Congrats on the subscriber count. Always got to leave you a comment to help the algorithm.
Thanks so much
I watch other sites like "make it custom" and the way he does body work is so mush more "show car" quality. I watch what your doing here and this is the way I like to do it, ya it might not win at gambler but it really looks good when its all done. Great content Dave keep it coming...
Thanks! I would love to learn the Best ways to do things. But I’m ok with just getting it done and enjoying the ride
You made me really like those Mustang II
Nice!
I love this project!
Thanks! Me too
dude your videos make me wanna get in the shop, exciting to see the progress!
Right on! That’s the goal
I'll probably never own anything lowered because it's not really my style but this is my favorite build of yours.
That is cool. Glad it’s keeping people’s attention!
Man I new you was going to put some love in to it.
I can’t help it
3M Acryl Putty (green) has been a life saver for the final coat
That stuff is expensive
@@thedirtheadshed like stupidly expensive. Makes it really hurt when the whole tube dries out.
Great episode, found it ironic that it was snowing outside and you are cutting the roof for a rag top.
Right! I’m always a little off on my timing
I love the safety glasses on top of your head but shutting your eyes and using your hands as a shield while welding. The Miller shield on the trunk the entire time. This is reality tv folks.
Love the build.
It’s real. Sometimes you just get wrapped up in getting the job done
You are really rad Dave! Thanks for build awesome stuff
Thanks so much for watching
I love this car
Me too
Who would get mad at You for giving this Turd a new life? A much cooler life than it's first one. I'm really starting to dig this shit box. Great work Dave, You never disappoint. 😁👌
You get it!! Fun is more important than perfection
You could put all the money into it and it would still be a tarted up Pinto. These kind of car's are cheep to buy & cheep to fix. Fun is affordable with this. That is a great lesson for the hole car community to see. 👍👍
Almost to 100k!! Hell yeah.. Keep up the great content Dave😊
Thanks! Spread the word
@@thedirtheadshed Always!
On those drip rail trims, I use a cheap can/bottle opener and just tape the trim up. Work it from the bottom up. :)
That sounds like a good trick
On road, off road, or no road Dave delivers content that meets the needs of many. Thanks Dave!
-=Doug
Thanks Doug! I like to mix it up
Historic build in the Mustang and custom worlds, honestly. Coolest one ever done so far. I want it so bad.
I appreciate that. It’s getting there!
One way to get the oil can out is with a torch. A large circular motion of heat will shrink the metal, then you can metal work it back into shape.
Sounds simple enough
I had a 90 olds quad442 I put a streetbeat customs ragtop in ....I loved having that big open roof
That car would be cool to lay on the ground
@@thedirtheadshed yeah I wish I still had it my parents bought it brand new ,I owned it from age 19 till 33 when I wrecked it ,I'm 47;now and still think about that car,I'm in to Volkswagen now and was thinking about picking up a GTI and putting a ragtops slider in it,people just don't know how cool those ragtops are in less they have had one,Love your channel and your vision for this ugly ducklings mustang is awesome it just shows some of the more odd ball cars can be turned into something really cool, keep those videos coming..... And Happy New Year....
Pretty sweet build man.
Thanks! It’s a fun one
I cannot believe you found a sliding rag! So stoked for you. I’ll have to search the web to find one. I own two 60s beetles. Always wanted one. Britax used to make them in the 90s.
Yep. Check sunroofsource.com that’s where this came from
Bunch of hard work you have done. Going to look killer when it’s done.
Thanks. Still So much to do
Hey Dave, I want to say this before you get so popular that you’ll never see my comment. I think the most popular car shows are of course about the cars, but almost as much so about the friends and buddies aspect - definitely so for original Top Gear, Mighty Car Mods, Matt’s offroad recovery, and arguably DED. Even though you and Fred don’t live close, I think the more collaborations and pals you have involved the stronger your viewer base will be and also maybe won’t require quite so much cranking on raw auto production. Just an observation.
I agree with that
The phenomenon at the quartpanel is called a "frog" over here because it jumps around and is kinda hard to catch
Hahah. True
The Musturd just get keeps getting cooler! This has to be your favorite car in your fleet? Way to go Dave!
Thanks . Yeah ,for some reason I can’t stop working on it
That sliding rag turned out great. I've wanted to do one for 25 years, but never have. I was actually considering doing it to the rear topper in my 79 Bronco, but I'm not sure. You're doing a lot of fun work to that car. I have a tough time not wasting time doing everything 100% on stuff like that; you're right, just get it done well, a 90% job is fine, and have fun with it. It's not a concourse car. I can't wait to see it after you finish the bodywork and paint it. The blue you described with that white top should look sharp.
That should be coming soon. I recruited some help the next couple of weekends
Man that ragtop did wonders for the roof super cool
It spiced things up!
The slider is killer dave It will look sick with some fresh paint and some sunshine crusin.
So ready
Every episode of this car it's getting better. Roof and quarter panel look amazing.
Thanks! I agree. It’s still weird that a Mustang ii of all things is the one that is keeping my attention
I didn't think that thing could get any cooler! Then Dave steps up his game. Good stuff bro!
Still uncool…
Couple months ago thing was sitting in a farm field.
I’m seeing that car chopped and sectioned, in my mind, looking like a mini Riviera.
I’m not sure this is the car to put that much work into
Maybe not…haha.
You deserve all the subscribers Dave! You are super talented and cool to boot! You'll be at 1 million before you know it!
That’ll be wild if it goes that far. Thank you
what a strange coincidence Im working on one right now too!!!
Right on! Keep it on the road!
Sooooo stylin", congrats it looks great!
Thank you!!
The ragtop is sick Dave. Such a killer style of build for the mustang.
Thanks. It’s taking it well
You should do an episode on your shop build. I’m building a shop next summer and it would be cool to see what you like dislike etc.
I will pretty soon.
Considering that all you do is smash body panels on rocks, you sure did have nice technique on the gas cap fill. Great job, Sir 🎉👏
Thanks!
Had a 78 King Cobra repainted in the early 90s and that same area of the quarter was a problem also. Filler cracked and had to be fixed twice
I expect this will do the same
This is easily my favorite episode!
I appreciate that. I wasn’t sure if it was gonna be good enough
I had my doubts about the lil Mustang II but after this I’m really starting to dig it! 👍🏻
Me too
Dood, just when I think that little rig couldn't get any more gangster...super cool!
It’s gonna be pretty rad by next spring
I love this fucking build. It’s not a “badass” Mustang, but I like that you’re taking an old car and making it fun again. I’m a big fan of sliding ragtops, so that helps, too.
I’m having fun with it too
Totally rad!
Thanks
A lot of times you can work those pins with a piece of bar stock next to it and a pair of vice grips or side cutters on the pin. You can either use the bar stock as a lever and the vice grip across it to hold the pin, or keep the bar stock flat on the panel and use the vice grip as a lever. Gives you way more control than the slide hammer.
Good trick
I can't take full credit. Picked it up from a friend who's been doing bodywork longer than i have.
Looks like how my projects go. Just a few loose tiles in the shower turns into half up the wall down to the studs and a week later my shower is back better than ever haha. Thanks for the video Dave !
They always get out of hand. Thanks
Nice work! First sliding ragtop I have seen on a Mustang II. Although, I was hoping you would make a convertible out of it!
It would be cool. But not sure it would
Be cooler
Great video Dave! I'm the guy on insta that shamed you for cutting bull nose fenders! 🤣. I watch everything ya make, hope I didn't come across as an ass over there. You and Fred remain the nicest guys out there.
I didn’t take offense to it. I’ve never been much of a restoration guy. I chop on everything
@@thedirtheadshed and you do it well! Mom's spaghetti is so clean lookin, hope someday we both end up on the same trail in South Dakota or something so I can get a closer look!
I just installed one of their 50 x 44 kits on my 2020 Ford F150 super crew. Doesn’t leak one drop! I do have the front ribs so I had to get a rubber deflector to help with wind noise and then I made a quad fold foam, headliner insert with magnets, and that significantly decrease the wind noise when I’m not using the top!!
Definitely better to spend $800 to get the open air field $55,000 for a new bronco!!
Yeah. It’s a lot of bang for the buck
Couple years and you will be at a million for sure. You got all the ingredients. Thank you for all the awesome content!
Thanks for the support. All of it is what will keep things moving forward
