Sam's a mad man, one heck of a hard-core sailor. Video didn't do the waves justice. Most people wouldn't have gone through that inlet with those breakers, on a small boat. But the man who rides a 16ft Hobie Cat to the Bahamas, no problem, the crazier it is, the better it is for Sam.
I had to giggle when you say, sometimes stuff is open late in Spain. I remember the first time I went. We landed about 10:30 PM and got to Barcelona around 1130 and every single restaurant is open and packed with people, even with a 20 or 30 minute wait. And then the next day we go out for lunch it’s like two in the afternoon and nothings open everything is closed. If you don’t have breakfast, you’re usually screwed until 4 PM when everything starts opening back up. Siesta is real.
When I was about 8 or 9, my Dad had a Cal 34 that he needed to get out of the Ventura, CA Harbor. The waves were so big that he put my brother and I below deck with life preservers on. I’ll never forget it because we went airborne and when we hit the water again it was so loud below. We went airborne twice. However, surfing on the way back in was a blast!
Sam - Sailing from Ifati (Madagascar) to Richards Bay , Zululand , South Africa we had a Sperm Whale Cow and Calf cross our bows. The cow turned around and nudged our boat just as a warning. We activated a hand held flare attached to a line and dragged it next to the boat under water. Whale and calf took off immediately . They don't like bright lights.
Wow, Sam, your videos are a BLAST to watch. You're sooooo fricken hilarious, while at the same time you absolutely mean business! Beautiful videos, dude. Thanks for all your work!! So glad to see you're over the sea sickness. Safe travels!
Keep on keeping on! World Sam Man. You must have sailing angels on your side. Of course mad braveness and no fear doesn’t hurt. Great drone video too❤!
Sam, Pickle is a beast for a smaller vessel. And she's fast when she gets the right conditions. I see a lot of 24ft boats that can't hit or barely sail 4 knots. ⛵ 🌊 🙏
Sam I see a rod & reel at 2:13 looks like a Penn levelwind do you ever drop a bait back? You're all over the world it would be nice to see a fish from different oceans to come over the gunnel. I always give you a thumbs up before I even watch always an adventure!!
That Sam Holmes smile of satisfaction safely in the marina after facing the crazy waves & currents of the inlets. Even more so- after a decent meal and... a police visit to checking out his story. Now the real test of Orca World & Gibraltar awaits. Kool drone footage too- just say'n. I have been following Jibsea's sailing channel- they are about a week ahead of you Sam. Check out their last 3 episodes for some clues and updates as you enter the Med. The fuel prices do vary when you do get to Gibraltar. Their route past the Orca environment might help you? Any further adventures with the waves & current, wear the life jacket and attach yourself to the safety lines. Safe journey ahead for you and the Pickle.
I rarely comment on videos but this one blew my mind. I have been following your adventures for some time and I’m from Mazagon! Was amazed to see the tiny town where I learned to sail featured in the video. Good luck on the rest of the journey.
When u have strong wind from east north east south east and upcoming tides u can have 30ft waves out there on the north and west coast of spain. Street of Gibraltar has strong currents too, watch out and search the times of tides there.
Lagos in Portugal is pronounced ‘lah-gosh’ (I went there during my RYA Day Skipper course years ago, on a 1930s schooner). This at least helps distinguish it from Lagos, Nigeria!
Wowza your videos are fantastic I noticed when I was watching your waves before you docked I was starting to feel seasick oh my goodness me ahhaha tremendous vid thanks so so much, those wraps looked great 😅
“I’m not sure if we’ll make it there before the restaurants close!” Is =not= a problem I’ve ever heard a mariner mention before now! 😂 Love you, brother! Keep on keeping on! 🎉🎉🎉
Find a local school and check out some lessons. Relatively cheap to learn how to sail, and will give you the opportunity to spend a few days on a boat to figure out if you actually like the hobby or not. 👍
Take a spoon and tap the round end of the egg until you hear the membrane snap inside. The sound of the tapping will change. Boil , easy peel, and enjoy
Nice little town, I took my boat in there a few years ago with a couple of friends. We drank the bar dry on my friends credit card as we only had Portuguese money (before the Euro) :-)
Hoping the Official Stamped Paper works out well for you when checking i to Gibraltar Sam. Best Wishes, Fair Winds, and have a great stay in Gib. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️
I used to live in Gib ... remember going around Europa point on 60 foot ship. It got really choppy ,where the Atlantic meets the Med. Watch out for the cheeky monkeys, they,ll pick your pockets😅
Enjoyed your channel! Just Subscribed.I’m trying to convince my wife that a circumnavigation is a great retirement project and went so far as to even start a little channel (@NavalGazingatCampDavid) to sell her on the life style….desperate times and all that. Lol. Thanks again for the great content. I have a whoooole new appreciation for the time and care it takes to create these episodes!
Sam the white water legend! What you take on in your sub 30 footer puts those 500k plus big displacement yachts skippered by so called expert TH-cam bloggers to shame. Keep it up, but try not to get pitch poled in the process. God bless bro
Wow Sam! Those were some serious waves leaving that inlet! Glad you made it out safely! Great video! Didn't really understand why the Police visited or what the paper was about but glad it all worked out! Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to seeing what happens with the killer whales in the next one! May fair winds be with you my friend!🌬⛵
@@samholmessailing In 1992, there were three offices to check into and out of at every port you visited in Portugal and Spain, one of them was the police. Bureaucracy creates jobs for civil servants to feel important and needed. Several hours coming and going.
@samholmessailing What's the cooking gimbal mount you got there? @ 2min38s. I remember you had one of those in your first sailboat, sailing over to Hawai, and I've wanted one ever since
so cool you can go to google earth and see the trees you flew the drone through. yea drones are so cool the view you can get. i been building and flying drones for over 10 years. i wish there was a US company that builds as good as DJI. i live around Gainesville Florida.
Hey Sam, just a bit of advice. If your heading toward Gibraltar stay in the Spanish Marina next to Gibraltar. The prices are way better and the local tapas bars are superb in La Linea. If you want to see Gibraltar you can do it in a day. There isn’t a lo to see except shops selling dodgy Rolex’s and. Monkeys that crap everywhere. The crap bars and crap service in Gibraltar are just full of drunk Brits who work for the online gambling companies. There is lots to do in Spain and it comes with culture!
He may need to stay in Gib to reduce his time in the EU, every day counts on a Schengen visa! Also La Ligna is a very sketchy town these days, high crime and lots of unemployment, one of the sketchiest areas in all Spain .
Hiya Sam , I am amazed by your videos, you have me hooked ! I’d love, as I’m sure many others would , love to know how you gained your experience in sailing ? I’m an ex Royal Marines Commando and learning to sail , what your doing would be my ultimate ! Fair winds Gareth

@johnbosworth777 thanks , Ive only only just seen your comment. You tube Biff!!! Have found the book amd bought. Have bought a boat and had lessons so will be out there very soon . Thanks again
Crazy waves Sam! Love your mix of land & sea in this video. Ahhh Doners....Turkish origin. Love them. While on a sabbatical at a Germany university I'd frequent a place called McDoners...borrowing on a similar sounding name. Dean
It's really strange to think that for thousands of years, sailors just wouldn't even bother trying to cross places like these. For example, Poseidon was the god of the Mediterranean, while Oceanus ruled over the strange and terrifying waters beyond, a place where even Hercules did not dare venture.
It was not knowing if their ships could hold enough or if they would survive the journey.across the ocean..but there were ships that crossed those seas, but only where there was a trading partner on the other side.
We’ve been sailing the open ocean for hundreds of thousands of years. Immediately after humans left Africa, we popped up in Australia. Not India, not Indonesia.
Dang I covet that expensive shackle connecting your boom vang--you aren't even using it! Even though you're killin' it! What is the piece of running rigging under/parallel to the boom. Nice reverse surfing, BTW!
It looks like you main sheet runs back along the boom and then down to the deck and back under your dodger to the cockpit. Does this system work well? Do you like it?

You should do sailing lesson charters and charge an appropriate. I would 100% sign up to learn a small amount of what you know about sailing.

Another great Sam Holmes Sailing video update. Keep up the great adventures and sharing them with us. Thanks for sharing.
I'm extremely afraid of the ocean however I love watching all your adventures!

Every time I watch one of your videos, I can't help but think of the scene from Jaws, where the guy says, "we're going to need a bigger boat."

fun video as always Sam. Those waves looked intimidating.
You're a wild man Sam. Keep it up.
You need to go in when high tide is coming up, not when low tide is coming out😂😂😂😂

It's his autopilot. Been like that for ages and somehow he doesn't seem to notice.
I went sailing this weekend. It was fun but man is is tiring and lots of work
Impressive drone flying... under trees? WOW!
Nice waves over the bow🎉
@3:30 i also couldn't tell if that was your boat squeaking like a mf, or if you had some screeching seagulls following you around begging for food.😂

Your built a little differently, as you seem excited about sailing into Orca territory. I would be super nervous. Good luck! Hope all goes well.
From memory in 1990 Gib was a bit of a shithole. A haven for dodgy financial dealings. Limited moorings so I anchored off end of airport runway.

That's a cool frame you made for your solar panels. Do you think you could make it longer at the back to place more panels.?
I’m limited to that far back because my windvane paddle.
thanks alot
Why does pickle sound like she is in awful pain in the big swells? 😂

Forgot to ask .. what is the jet boil gimbal rig? DIY or by Jett Boil? Super way to cook - no spill no matter what!
There is an old video in which he discusses his DIY test/trying it out and loved it. Memory fails me precisely when that's how far back.
It was nice to see you put on a life jacket.
Not sure why you face those waves without any sail up, having some wind thrust keeps you a bit more steady.
