Really appreciate the honesty and holistic view for the good bad and ugly. Nothing is perfect, but it sounds like this truck is checking more boxes than not for you. Stoked to see all the changes you add this year and where it takes you and yours
Great video man! Very practical and insightful. I’m surprised to hear the bigger brake didn’t feel sufficient. I wonder if the 3rd gen tundra brakes would bolt on
Thanks buddy! Yeah the brakes surprised me big time. I thought maybe that’s why they included the bigger package, because they obviously knew people would be modding them. They aren’t terrible, it’s not like I’m rolling through stop signs of course but it was an immediate difference. PowerBrake is gonna happen! 😉 Thanks for watching man! We’re all ready to see more on the Tundra!
All things considered that is one nice rig Tyler! Great job of describing in detail the pros and cons. Looking forward to seeing your new Alucab install!
+1 on the driving features.. Don't have it in my 3rd gen, but the Wifey's Subaru has this. It was priceless on a 5k road trip from Texas to Montana hitting a bunch of national parks in between. Being able to hit Cruise control, sit back and relax, rest my arms and lightly touch the steering wheel so it would not scream at me and just let the car drive its self, was sooooooo nice. Good to hear it is in some of the 4th gen Tacoma trims!!
I was a loyal Toyota customer, had so many Toyota pickups. I will not buy another one for years, maybe when Toyota decides to build the reliability back into their trucks!
Going back and watching this video again, i realize that if Toyota had you on their development staff, they would not make so many amateur mistakes. We all know that in the end it comes down to profitability for Toyota, but I think we all can agree that they still need more management change and perspective change to be able to maintain the "expected" quality and performance aspects of their most loyal customers. they have made some headway, but Toyota corporate is still stuck in what true Toyota enthusiasts view as "you still just don't get it Toyota." I hope your and others content can shake the leaves and "help" Toyota not screw their own market share...because they seem to be on that self-induced depreciating path. Good honesty content man...keep it up.
The fact that you think Toyota built the tacoma is amateur is humorous. What you're seeing is Toyota cutting g costs not being amateur 🤦♂️ you can simply look at the TRD offroad it doesn't even come with metal skid plates? They cut costs where they could and raised the MSRP because of all the tech.
Awesome video. I took was sceptical of first year model. But after owning 3 different Gen 3s I said Wtf. I tow a very large overland tent trailer and decided to have airbags installed before I even took delivery. That has always been my problem with the bed loaded with gear. Looks like I made the right decision. It will give me more access to areas I used to avoid in Idaho and Inland Northwest. The light bar disappoints as well. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
So an upgrade over the sluggish third generation Tacoma in every way. Thanks for the insightful review on this truck. Let’s just hope the turbo 4 holds up as well as the bulletproof V6 engines from previous generations did.
@@Levi-mg4nf I came from a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Tacoma to my 2024 Land Cruiser 1958 edition and its been a pleasure to drive on the highway. Looking forward to its first off-road adventure! I’m a little nervous about the longevity but nothing better to test that than enjoying racking up miles on it as my daily!
The problem with this truck is it's only 70% complete. Snorkel but no pre-filter. Rear steel bumper but doesnt go under bed sides. OME suspension but no heavy loading. Toyota just half-assed the build to make it look capable.
I'd pull the flares and spray them with rustoleum bedliner. I've done that with great results on several vehicles. Bigger brakes help with fade resistance; they won't stop any harder. Pads could be the ticket. After that it might come down to the tires and brake booster. Killer truck, appreciate the honesty!
The big thing to me is brake fade, and the Powerbrakes will largely solve that. Especially on the steep declines. But yeah on the flares, I like them for the time being but I may do that in the future when they start to look like hell. (Which may not take long).
pads will contribute the most when you want stopping power and fad resistant. A semi metallic pad should do the trick however there will be more noise and dust with metallic pads.
Thanks for the comprehensive and honest review. I think the Trailhunter is really cool but I can’t see any reason for me to choose it over the TRD Off Road now. I also noticed during test drives that the hybrid version’s brakes are a little hurky jerky when coming to a stop. Have you noticed that?
No, mine don’t jerk around but someone actually commented on this video with something I hadn’t considered. Perhaps the regenerative braking on the hybrid system is somehow causing some of this to happen.
@@IndependenceOverlandI think it is indeed the regenerative system because I noticed the same thing while test driving 2 different land cruisers. It’s definitely worse on the Land Cruiser though
@@PottersWorkI guess I expected Toyota to have perfected the blend between regenerative and traditional braking. I assumed their pedal feel would have been perfect. I’m starting to realize my wife’s CR-V hybrid has set the bar really high. The pedal feel in her car is perfect. Those types of things matter a lot to me so I’ll be sticking with non-hybrid if I pickup a Tacoma
Great video! Good on you for taking that truck and doing with it what a bunch of folks plan on doing. Real world honest info based on actual experience is like gold nowadays. Take a good hard look at tracking down a 200 series. Not bells & whistles rich for 2025 standards, but soooo many solids!!
Hey dude, love your videos. I don’t believe there’s anything I disagree with you on. I’ve had my TH in quite a number of places and our thoughts on the truck seem to be the same.
Just my personal thoughts on this truck…while there’s a lot to like, I still stick to my “just buy a TRD Offroad” that I apply to Tacos/4Runners. Ultimately, I would rather choose my own suspension/wheels/tires, and with the price tag on these that absolutely applies. The Trailhunter would be a much better value proposition if it were more option based, being able to get one without the snorkel, the useless ARB rear awning, and the bronze wheels that are too big would be so much better. I love the wider body and long bed option, but $68k to get rid of a bunch of stuff just isn’t workable. That said, it still looks fantastic, I just hope they get more options in the future.
For the 4runner, I really hope they add dual zone climate to the off road premium. I'd also rather build it up a bit than start with TRD Pro, and that's an odd thing to not have at nearly 60k.
@ there are so many things missing from these $60+ Toyotas, getting a stick to hold up the hood, no power lift gate, sparse basic features and all the cheap plastic add up to a serious lack of value going forward, for me anyway.
What's funny is being able to hear turbo flutter is the coolest part of the new Trailhunter snorkels, yet almost everyone I've seen do a review on this complains lol
I do think its cool to some extent. It sounds bad ass. but its literally every time you touch the gas. So if a window is down, forget taking a phone call, or just cruising and listening to music. Just something to note.
Great video and thanks for the great review. We too have a trailhunter but we plan to stick with 285/70/17 tires becuse if we want 35s we have the 200 for that. For the brakes I think the tundra brakes will work becuse the new taco uses the same herons hubs as the tundra and I suspect it’s the same knuckle or if not it’s probably not hard to make the tundra brakes fit. For better lighting Baja designs has a spot light kit for the vents in the front and you can wire them up to the light bar to turn on so you have a proper spot like you want that’s what we have planned for ours.
Been watching the channel for a while and really enjoy the content. I recently got my Trailhunter in December. Are there any Tacoma forums you suggest joining for thoughts on modifications?
It soars up the passes. It really makes the old 1GR-FE in the Fj look like a dinosaur. But the Fj has 250k on it now, so that speaks volumes for it being a reliable dinosaur. Time will tell how these hybrids do.
@@IndependenceOverland I honestly think they will do good in the long run and will make the old Tacos seem ancient and underpowered (They are!!). Toyota just has a few teething problems to work out. I have loved every Toyota I've ever owned. My LC 200 with the 3UR just keeps going and going!! Great content!
I’ve got an FJ and do similar trips to you. I’m also upgrading and ALSO considered the Toyota + Modcamp option (Hilux) and the Ineos Grenadier, just like you. I’ve decided to go down the Ineos (with roof conversion) path, for several reasons. But, I think the Modcamp is awesome. Will be fun to see how you like it and what’s its like, then I can compare to my new Grenny 😅
Great review! Love the honesty and transparency! (Great looking truck!) However, I’m considering the merits of a mid-size now after watching a fair number of reviews…? Outside of trail size, I’m thinking with payload capacity, rear passenger etc. accommodations, and not a huge difference in mpg when kitted out, and the, frankly, stratospheric purchase prices for these mid-sizes, a full size truck is probably the better choice! (Spend a little more $ and gain a lot more “usable” truck!)
Just hit 7200 miles on mine. Same color, same impressions on the paint for sure. Another surprise was the windshield...Not near as robust as I would have thought and behaves oddly to moisture. Coming from a Wrangler with Gorilla glass.
Haha yeah it’s definitely partly my vision playing a role. But even with glasses is seems almost like it’s got a parallax effect. The other thing I forgot to mention is that you can’t see it with polarized glasses, so when I do have on prescription sunglasses the HUD is just gone.
I have heard that the standard size front coil-overs and rear springs that work for all the 2024+ Tacomas work for the TH also. Just have to take into account that the TH already has stiffer than stock springs with a 1" lift in the font and .5" lift in the rear. Dobinsons has some good options for springs. After much research for my TH (LB) I am going to try the DOBINSONS - C59-822 on the front which should give my about a 1" lift with the accessory/gear load I have planned (the C59-820 would probably net about a TH stock ride hight when loaded). On the back I haven't decided between the C59-821V and the C59-819V. I will likely go with the C59-819V due to the fact that when I am not camping I will not have much gear besides the Decked and rack. When loaded down the C59-819V will give just a slight lift over stock TH, where the C59-821V would be about 1-1.5" over stock. Unloaded the C59-821V looks pretty silly with the back end way up in the air, but I have heard good things about them with full campers and gear on the back (1000+lbs). I will let you know how it goes if you are interested.
Change the pads to EBC green stuff pads, will make a world of difference. I put the EBC green stuff pads on my 2nd gen that was set up for towing and I never gave it a second thought.
Great review. I am further convinced this truck is wildly overpriced for what you get and it's quite clear Toyota has a lot kinks to work out. Unless money isn't a consideration, there's no way anybody who is going to be doing serious mods should be buying this thing. Just get an OR/ORP. Glad I won't be back in the market for a few more years while we learn about these new gen Toyota trucks. They don't excite me other than the power and we don't know how reliable they'll be. I do like your wheel/tire choice, the rig looks good. Appreciate your honesty and being a beta tester of a first year truck. Brave man. Cheers
Yeah, I’ve seen Tundra stuff get used and Dobinson now offers a bunch of options. Thats what I’ll go with, but I’m waiting to add more weight before I choose my spring.
Tyler, thanks for being real, vs the fake and explaining things how you did. We use trucks in Colorado vs just buying a model. The electric tailgate is bs my opinion. I bumper should be metal more and high clearance
Great video, Tyler! I’m about 3k miles in on mine, though I have a DCLB so slight difference in maneuvering/driving feel. My pros and cons are mostly aligned with yours. I’ve held off doing anything drastic with weight for now because of the coils. I really hope we get some nice aftermarket options soon! Not a coil but I know sumo springs is working on stuff for the 4th gen right now. Fully agree on the light bar. Im going to probably put a pair diode SS5s in the front to offset that. I want fogs and forward light at the same time dangit! I do like the electric tailgate most of the time ~ for what I do work wise it does make sense but I have a bit of a weird specific use case. I’ve still had a few tailgate beep tantrums though. which are obnoxious. I wonder if it’s easy to disable? Hm. I crave a larger gas tank though. “Go far” lol good one Toyota Overall though I absolutely love this thing!! It’s extremely comfortable and easy to maneuver even with the longer wheelbase. This truck was a decade plus tech upgrade for me and while it’s taken some getting used to, it’s so nice to have some of those creature comforts. Do you drive with the hybrid auto breaking assist features off? I’m still deciding if I like it or not for daily driving.
Late in the video you are backing up with the door open, my TRD Sport will not do that. The brakes lock, I have to close the door, shift to park, then back to reverse before I can move. That must be an option somewhere that I have protection I don’t want.
Love the color of this Tacoma. I don’t understand the fascination with 35” tires. I’ve gone off-roading to so many places with stock 31” tires in my 2022 ZR2
My Fj is on a 34ish inch tire. This truck had a longer wheelbase, and the little bit of lift will help. Plenty of places need a bigger than stock tire. If a 31 works for you, then stick with it.
With all the weight you have on that vehicle, I'm surprised it gets what you do with 35s. Beautiful truck, again with your tires and weight, that is effects it enormously. I bought a 24 Offroad for my wife, it is nice, but if we tow Mt 17' boat, the gas mileage takes a big hit. It's a small truck, but towing, it's definitely not my F350. Overall it's a big improvement over our 4 Runner and our last 2022 Tacoma, but again it's still a small truck. Advantage over my 350, it's a good size for Offroad. It rides excellent, is quiet, and for her Offroad, it's a excellent highway vehicle. You have a beautiful truck, but with all the mods you are doing, I'm sure it will keep you going. Good review, appreciate your honesty.
Yeah I never paid attention to the OEM MPG because I knew disappointment was coming my way with all the mods. It will get slightly worse with the camper install. I am willing to bet I could get almost a full MPG back if I switch back to an AT tire. That’s been my experience with previous vehicles anyway.
@IndependenceOverland a friend of mine did a total overhaul of his older tacoma input, a different rear end in it, and that allows him to get better mileage. He hauls a camper, an off road type or overlanding.
i cant remember but a few weeks back i remember watching a video where someone replaced their springs with the tundras because of how much they sagged also
I feel like the smaller fuel tank is one of the biggest misses for the 4th gen Tacoma. I still own a 3rd gen and am still happy with it (and it’s paid off!), but I really like the 4th gen and feel like they did improve a lot of things, especially from a daily driver standpoint. I can see upgrading to a 4th gen at some point.
AHhh yes, that is one that I forgot to mention for sure! I took notes for like 2 months on my phone to try to not overlook anything, somehow I missed it. I am absolutely putting a Long Range America tank on this thing.
I have just over 8k miles on my TRD Offroad (non hybrid), my biggest complaint is the size of the fuel tank, my 2015 Tacoma had a 400 mile range easily, Toyota dropping the tank size down on the 24 I barely get to 300 miles. The only thing that’s gone wrong is one JBL speaker died and was replaced. Overall I’m happy with it though
Agree with all of this. I’ve got 8000 miles on mine and the suspension really falls apart with a load in the back. I just had my shop pull apart the suspension and I see that the left front struct bushing has ruptured. I think it’s going to continue to be a problem, and I can’t have that with as much reliance I have on this truck. Going back and forth with Toyota to warranty a bushing isn’t going to work for me. It’s unfortunate because it rides so well stock. They really needed some more testing.
It seriously blows me away every time. People have their opinions about turbos, but living in the mountains it helps a lot to have air being stuffed into cylinders!
The payload rating is 1425 lbs. I am not sure how much you weight you are carrying, but the suspension seems like it needs to be improved. I agree that we need some more options factory / aftermarket.
Did you replace the shocks I'd be interested to know without watching four videos what you did to correct the complaints that you're having and you could easily do that in this video thanks
I feel like you understated the alarms! Driving around Utah, any snow that covers the sensors would cause them to freak out. Were you referring to the regular Carista or the EVO or would either work?
Hey man! Question for you. Do you get a constant electric feedback sound in the cabin? You mentioned a noise on the passenger side when the inverter is on but mine has that issue all the time. The only time it stops is when the engine is not running and I’m at full stop or in park
@ I appreciate the response! The dealer insisted that it was normal but I get the feeling they just don’t know how to fix it. Time to press a bit harder on them.
That was a software issue that was corrected before the hybrids even launched. It basically sent 100% power to the front spinning wheel, which just so happened to catch traction right at that time.
I love this channel and I’m not saying this negatively because as a car enthusiast I can relate. It’s rough being a fanboy lol. I am the same exact person when it comes to Yamaha motorcycles but I love nothing more than owning jeeps and hating jeeps. I love talking crap to other jeep owners when they approach me as if we’re in some club and I tell them how much I hate jeeps lol. My jeep is great but it’s just a vehicle and it’s no better than any other vehicle and I fact from a reliability standpoint both of my jeeps are the worst vehicles I’ve ever owned. They do however have a good approach to giving good off-road features in basic vehicles much like Toyota.
I just bought a long bed 2024 Trailhunter. If I put a light weight hidden winch bumper and a 65 lb winch, do you I"ll need to beef up the front suspension? Also you mentioned adding airbags. Do you know of a video for airbag installation specifically for the Trailhunter? Thanks
The shocks are still great, but yeah I am not totally sure for most people it’s worth the extra coin. I don’t regret it by any means, but others in my shoes might.
Pads wear out on the highways because the rotor is spinning and removing material. I don't see the brakes wearing out using crawl control as the rotors are not lighting them up as they do braking on the highway.
I thought I was losing my mind when I customized the screens and then they changed by themselves. The rack issue is known by toyota and have no fix at this time. You can turn the power tailgate off.
Interesting. I’m getting 15-16 mpg on my OR hybrid with 33s while pulling a 2500 lb camper. Can easily get mid 20s while not towing and if traffic is slower, but yeah once you hit 75 I’m back down to around 19. Lotta variance with these trucks. I imagine the bigger tires, additional weight, and terrible drag with a bunch of gear on the roof may have something to do with your mpg, so it’s a wee bit unfair to list that as a con against the truck as it comes 😂
So do you feel like the snorkel actually does it job? You didn't discuss its function. What about the overall size. Coming from a Tundra, I am just worried about the space inside for long trips...
With only 7k miles and some desert trips under my belt, I have not found the intake filter to be dirty really at all. It does suck that a prefer can’t be fit on it, or at least not yet. With 3d printers so common, I get someone will come up with something. It’s a midsized truck inside, it’s small by most people’s standards. It’s my wife, myself, and the dog. The truck bed is giving me a massive amount of more space compared to the Fj I have been driving for 15 years. I am also doing something to expand the space even further. But that’s not being shared yet. 🤫
@IndependenceOverland I grew up in Gyp town and I drive a 3rd Gen tacoma. I like your trail hunter and have been test driving a few of the newer i-force max. Is it worth upgrading or do you think it's worth waiting a year or two for Toyota to fine tune a couple things? Are you friends with any of the locals that have lived in town there for a long time? Curious if we know a couple of the same folks.
What dimensions are your rims besides being 17" do they have an offset ? I want method rims those rims specifically I just want 0 offset . I'm new to trucks and offroad so I don't know a whole lot I'm learning alote since I got my 2024 Tacoma
+35 is what I went with. You should call Method, they will explain how much your tire will poke out on each offset they offer. Since my Trailhunter is already wide, and my fenders are wider than most of the other trims, I wanted my wheels to be flush with the fenders so they would be functional. I covered it in one of the 35” tire videos I have linked in the description, but I apologize I don’t remember which one exactly.
Biggest thing I've noticed was fuel. And the wireless charging is a phone warmer it sucks. But overall I love the truck. My biggest flaw on mine is the roof rack vibrating at 60+.
Yeah I’m swapping mine for a Sherpa as soon as I get it back. So I’ll be doing some content on a better rack option. Toyota really missed the mark. The rack looks good, but being a subwoofer makes it an overpriced non starter.
@IndependenceOverland I'm looking at the cali raised 360 lighting kit. If you herd of it, let me know if that's a good buy. Looks like a good rack for offroading
Is there no fix for the roof rack? Does it help if you have something on it? I really can’t tell what exactly is vibrating. It is really driving me nuts. The wind in New England in the winter can get up there and sometimes I can’t get over 55mph without vibration.
Following this thread. Same rack, same issue. ~70 mph harmonic. Super annoying. Cranked down the mount points with some improvement but still there. Seen other threads with similar issues. One mentioned going to the dealer for a fix? I made an appointment in about a week for some road testing and will respond with any intel I get. Definitely want the rack or “a” rack - worst case without improvement I intend to pursue a refund and self replace with something recommended here.
@independenceoverland Re: rack vibe--Has anyone heard of vibe issues on non-TH tacos with the same OEM rack? My vibe is on the right side of the truck and wondering if the snorkel is the root cause in an aero sense (i.e. a vortex or burble) causing some backflow and the vibe. The more i think about it, the more I am inclined. Not sure there would be a fix. Also curious if other racks on THs (non-OEM, Sherpa, etc) have reported anything similar? Thanks for the continuous great content.
@@IndependenceOverland Thanks. I just can't believe you've potentially gone over payload so kind of surprised of the sag you mentioned. Obviously you'll need to get your alu-cab canopy on there, winch and other heavier items before fully, and properly, addressing the suspension issue. I can certainly empathize with you about some disappointment with the sag but at least the bags will help for now. Happy exploring.
I love this channel. I like the OBS 7.3 powerstrokes, and this is inspiring me to build a overland 7.3. Although i only have $500 and i dont even have a drivers license.
You don’t need all the fancy stuff, we all just started with a stock truck and a Walmart tent. The rest comes with time, as you figure out what you want and need. Get out there and make some memories!
It's too expensive and I worry about the hybrid system. There's a reason it was completely reworked for the LX700h. Toyota didn't want to test it on the big Landcruiser. Waterproof housing, and kill switches to protect it in crossings. Kind of essential for an exploration vehicle. Also has the traditional starter and alternator so you don't get stuck if the hybrid system or battery fail. Waiting for that tech to trickle down to the cheaper Toyota's before committing to the hybrid version.
Are you sure your not just feeling the fact the hybrid system tries to use the electric motor to slow down the vehicle to Regen battery power. The times when your actual brakes kick in are very very hard stops or under 5 mph or so. You feel the truck kick from electric Regen to actual brakes. The hybrid system Regen makes the truck feel like the braking is poor. My TrailHunter is the same way with bigger tires. But yet it does stop fine once past the Regen functions.
I had not considered that actually, thank you for bringing it to my attention. I kind of forget about the regen brake function to be honest. Maybe that’s how they prevent brake fade. Thank you very much for this comment.
@IndependenceOverland you bet. I definitely get the "brakes aren't working well feel". Only to find out with research that the computer uses the actual brakes very little and the programming gives it that feel of poor brakes as it wants the max power Regen to happen.

All things considered that is one nice rig Tyler! Great job of describing in detail the pros and cons. Looking forward to seeing your new Alucab install!
Man I’m soooo ready for the Alucab! It should be getting out on in the next month or so!
Yeah man it is soooo nice to have on a 12 hour driving day!
I appreciate the shoutout to Jeeps (as I drive one): it’s basically the Rubicon of the Toyota world 😅 Great review!
Good, educated, honest review. You're right, that is a good looking truck! Love what you've done with it and the content!
Thanks man I appreciate that!
These are great looking trucks. Great vid buddy!
Thanks! Just got my Trailhunter . Same color too. Absolutely Love it so far.
Awesome truck, I sold it to my customer last year and it was the only truck he was interested in. Great video 👋form Katy, Texas.
I do have to say that I was impressed with the pickup and power of that truck. It geel like a luxury vehicle compared to the older generations.
Try an LX-470 2000-2007 if you want ultimate comfort with power!
Very good video. Congratulations. Amazing Truck. Cheers from Mexico
Great video 👍
Actually researching this exact model and really helps.
Its a very cool truck so far! I cant wait to get mine back!
I got some Dobinson +300lbs springs for the back of mine and it’s great! They also have a +700 too if you need that much.
Great overview of the truck! I completely agree that it's like driving a luxury vehicle offroad!
And thank you so much for the super! No need to do that, but thank you very much! 🙏
@@IndependenceOverlandI think it is indeed the regenerative system because I noticed the same thing while test driving 2 different land cruisers. It’s definitely worse on the Land Cruiser though
My wife's Rav4 hybrid brakes do this too...I have noticed it's worse when it's in EV mode. Brakes feel totally different when the engine is running.
Tbh seems like it’s only going to get better! Cant wait to see what you do with it 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video! Love your truck! Can’t wait to see the Ali-cab!
It’s gonna be soooooooo cool!
Edits on the video are awesome. Your truck is awesome
Thank you!
Awesome Truck and Build out so far! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
Some people are gonna love what I’m about to do it it, some people are going to hate it.
Thanks for checking it out man! Yeah, I’m impressed with it. Hopefully they prove to be reliable. I got a 10 year warranty just in case!
Yeah, since I have this channel it made sense. If I didn’t have this channel, I’d have gotten a TRD OR for the sake of cost.
💯 the offroad is the best option
For the 4runner, I really hope they add dual zone climate to the off road premium. I'd also rather build it up a bit than start with TRD Pro, and that's an odd thing to not have at nearly 60k.
@ there are so many things missing from these $60+ Toyotas, getting a stick to hold up the hood, no power lift gate, sparse basic features and all the cheap plastic add up to a serious lack of value going forward, for me anyway.
that is an unreal build
So this video just told me that the truck Toyota made for “over landing” is not suitable for over landing. Appreciate the honesty.
Truck looks good bro
All good info man! I like the review on the powertrain from a high altitude perspective. I feel like that gets missed alot in reviews.
Nice! Those are great looking rigs...
Proud FJ owner as well. I wish I could get every factory off roader that exists or is still on the road! Haha. Love the Grenadier!
Great evaluation. Helping a bunch of us make decisions.
Pretty sweet rig, I must say. ... the HUD Display being out of focus!? Naugh, your just catching up to some of us.
Haha yeah it’s definitely partly my vision playing a role. But even with glasses is seems almost like it’s got a parallax effect. The other thing I forgot to mention is that you can’t see it with polarized glasses, so when I do have on prescription sunglasses the HUD is just gone.
Hope our plug and play amplifier interests you to get one for your sick Tacoma!
Super clean Trailhunter, Where'd you get those door rocker panel?
Watching this I just feel like I would want to try the hybrid engine setup in my 3rd gen.
Yes I am! please keep me updated if you don’t mind.
Brave man. Cheers
You could run tundra springs in the rear to increase payload.
I am running Icon springs and they provided lift, but seem to be the same weight rating.
If i recall, there was a channel that test fitted 3rd gen tundra rear spring onto the taco and it fits.
“Go far” lol good one Toyota
Overall though I absolutely love this thing!!
Amazing review!
Late in the video you are backing up with the door open, my TRD Sport will not do that. The brakes lock, I have to close the door, shift to park, then back to reverse before I can move. That must be an option somewhere that I have protection I don’t want.
The trailhunter looks is the best.. wish we can have choices for parts.. toyota might as well take that market.
He hauls a camper, an off road type or overlanding.
i cant remember but a few weeks back i remember watching a video where someone replaced their springs with the tundras because of how much they sagged also
Dobinson makes several options now. The Tundra saw was pretty common before the after market got caught up.
I can barely make it over Vail pass unloaded... Sweet truck bro!
It seriously blows me away every time. People have their opinions about turbos, but living in the mountains it helps a lot to have air being stuffed into cylinders!
@@IndependenceOverland Oh ya, forced induction makes a world of difference, especially at 10,000+ feet. You basically have a Supra now haha.
This TrailHunter Build look awesome. The color is badass. Turbo whisle is perfecto
Just wait to see what happens in the next few months! 🤌
Does the dashboard screen support something like GaiaGPS? Well done review!
I feel like you understated the alarms! Driving around Utah, any snow that covers the sensors would cause them to freak out. Were you referring to the regular Carista or the EVO or would either work?
Just the white/regular unit worked for me.
Thanks for the honest video! It sounds like none of the Trailhunter-specific features work for you…except for the (broken) air compressor.
I am surprised the regenerative braking system isn't more noticeable.
Hey man! Question for you. Do you get a constant electric feedback sound in the cabin? You mentioned a noise on the passenger side when the inverter is on but mine has that issue all the time. The only time it stops is when the engine is not running and I’m at full stop or in park
No sir I do not, my wife wouldn’t have picked up on a noise like that right away. I’d take it to the dealer.
@ I appreciate the response! The dealer insisted that it was normal but I get the feeling they just don’t know how to fix it. Time to press a bit harder on them.
I saw on TFL that the front locker broke and it wasn’t even a tough road they were on. Makes me wonder about the quality?
Yup I’m a Toyota fanboy for sure, but it’s not a perfect truck. But it’s a good truck by my standards.
Thanks
Awesome video. I totally thought that it could hold the weight. What a disappointment. But.. buy a cheaper model and mod. Thanks for the info!
The shocks are still great, but yeah I am not totally sure for most people it’s worth the extra coin. I don’t regret it by any means, but others in my shoes might.
have you done an oil change yet??
Sure did!
Pads wear out on the highways because the rotor is spinning and removing material. I don't see the brakes wearing out using crawl control as the rotors are not lighting them up as they do braking on the highway.
More worried about brake fade in those situations, I should have specified.
@@IndependenceOverland Gotcha
My only gripe about the snorkel, you cant put a pumpkin on it for annual Pumpkin Snorkel Head Season 😢
Well, Toyotas in general get terrible MPG and always have. It’s a con in my eyes.
You in gypsum/eagle Colorado area?
Close to there, yes sir! Good eye!
Its a hybrid, does it not have some form of regenerative braking?
this truck looks so nice where can we get some wallpapers
Whats the total weight you have over top and bed of truck?
Probably around 450-550 lbs I’d guess.
Trailhunter looks guuuuuud… needs a normal bed tho
A normal bed?
What years is your fj
Can you mention what your specific truck's payload is that is printed on your truck, not the marketing fluff payload? Thanks.
1215 lbs. Thats with skids, rock rails, bumper, and the Trailhunter OEM rack factored in. Definitely better than the 3rd gen.
My 2010 f150 king ranch has 300,000 miles, and a water pump is the only thing that has broken
It has a real snorkel?
“Raised air intake”
With all of the electronics in todays vehicles, i don’t think any of them are true snorkels anymore.
That snorkel sounds incredible! I’d consider that a plus 😂
