Stranraer: One of the UK’s strangest stations?

The first shorter section is the exploration- the rest is the history!
It used to be the Sealink and then Stenaline ferry terminal before it moved to Cairnryan a number of years ago (2011). For years I would have got the train from England to Belfast on a rail and sail ticket. The train terminated at this Stranraer station and you then crossed the tarmac and boarded the ferry.
Wow. I wonder what it was like to see the station being used for what it was built to do! (I do know about the ferry stuff- it’s in the video)
Originally, Britain, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Finland etc. all had harbour stations, where passengers had a seamless cross platform transfer between train a ship, often being a very short walk.
Sadly with Eurostar opening and cheap flights, most of these closed down, and were either demolished or made redundant.
I have done by train these maritime stations :-
Stranraer Harbour
Dover Western Docks
Folkestone Harbour
Newhaven Marine,
Southampton Ocean Liner Terminal
Weymouth Quay
Fishguard Harbour
Rosslare Harbour Pier
Calais Maritime
Boulogne Maritime
Dieppe Maritime
Turku Harbour
etc.
It's pronounced stran rahr. Used to be where you got the ferry to Belfast to before they changed it to go from Cairnryan 10 or 15 years ago. Station used to be very busy because of that.

stranraer used to have a ferry port until 12 years ago, that's why the station made sense where it was, it was used to be next to the port, thats why it's got facilitates for ferry's leading upto the station
The information stated was explained in the video. You would have known that if you watched the full thing as I suggest on the comment - in this section - I left three weeks ago. As I have already told, me exploring Stranraer for the first time is only the beginning of this episode.
In addition, the plural noun for ferry is _ferries_ not “ferry’s” _with an apostrophe_ as it is not possessive. :)

From the rust on the railheads it looks like you were there before while the railway line was closed. A second fire in September 2023 at the neglected former Ayr Station Hotel left the building in an unsafe condition and resulted in the extended closure of the line south from Ayr to Stranraer. The rail service resumed on 1st July 2024.
I know about the happenings at Ayr! I talk about it at around 12:21 in the video.

Cool video, by any standards, not just for a 12 year old! One small point, I know it's an increasingly vanishing thing, but it's SEMAPHORE not SEPHAMORE 😉

@@AlbertsRailwayChannel Seriously, don't worry about it! I was very impressed with how assured you sounded. It's fascinating to me to see someone from an entirely different generation and their reaction to railways. I'm 60 now, and grew up going train-spotting every evening after school at Ealing Broadway station in London, so I got the full range of class 47's, class 52 Westerns and some of the most rickety DMUs you could imagine, and of course the first appearance of the original HST, every evening at 17:10 😉
that blur effect is same strange as the station, also please don’t squeeze photo in when you can just film anyway the effects of making the video is much appreciated not many kids your age can make it this good though

It is pronounced Stanraar, not Stranrare. I find the thump, thump the background "Music" distrurbing, find something calmer. My advice from a viewers point of is keep the camera steady and do not swing it around, it can make you feel queasy. Watch how some of the professionals do their filming with the camera kept static from scene to scene. Please do a little research before making your video, a look on the Wikipedia entry would help here. The railway originally served the ferry service to Northern Ireland when that ferry sailed from Stranraer, hence the need for all the sidings for freight. The rail facilities were no longer needed for the harbour when the ferry service was moved to Cairnryan up the eastern coast side of Loch Ryan but obviously it must have been not thought worth the effort to take up the unused track. The current Stranraer station is just for local train services from Glasgow and Dumfries and does not have much traffic.
If you’ve read the other comments and the description you’ll realise I have noticed my mispronunciation, I personally feel the music fits in with the chilled vibe of the video and it is certainly better than other rail themed YT channels, I apologise my amateur camerawork as I didn’t have my camera holder with me. My video vas not really uninformed as I read through the Wikipedia article at least 3 times before writing the script as well as checking other sources, I DO mention the ferries but I don’t have all the time in the world to go in depth and I’m sure some of the things you put in your comment are in the video, I.e “rail facilities no longer needed for the harbour… ferry service moved to Cairnryan up the eastern coast side of Loch Ryan”. Sorry if you didn’t enjoy or watch the full video but I’m only 12 you know!!

Unless you’re talking about the intro song that only lasts for 48 seconds. You can skip the intro you know.
I don’t mean to come across as rude ether, this is just my take on your (to use your own adjective) uninformed comment. Thanks
Sorry I may have appeared overly critical, I did realise you are only very young and I just wanted to make some , hopefully, helpful pointers for the future. There are many pitfalls even for still photography and cine, movie or video is a doubly difficult medium and seems to magnify any errors. The people who work in video and film professionally have taken extensive technical training in order to get a job, however, having said that, you still need a creative eye to produce good results whatever your technical qualifications may be. Keep on filming and as with anything, practice improves the skills. One final point about the extensive rail sidings. Apparently the Railway Station is owned by Stenna Line and not Network rail so perhaps the shipping company is not prepared to spend money on track removal. However, I do not know the real reason for the unused rails being left in place. I did enjoy the video, it took me back in time as I have not been to Stranraer for over twenty years and unlikely to ever visit again. I now live around 1500 miles to the south in the alps and rather a long trip to return again.
