Superb! But we now need a kickstarter or something to pay for you to drive different locos. The expression of concentration on your face was just like the one on Matt Gray's when he was hovering a helicopter. 125s are "my generation" of train, the Leeds main line goes past my old school and these were all whooshy and new in the 80s.
This is why he's my favorite Gary Brannan, Gary Brannan. He is nerdy but in the best way possible, as well as extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Have to say I am extremely jealous of this experience you had, glad you enjoyed it!
Gary needs to travel to Colorado to visit the Railroad museum and make some content with Hyce. Maximum steam train nerdage! I'm pretty sure Hyce even offered it in the first season of his Citation Needed.
All I can think of when I see everybody's favourite Gary Brannan, Gary Brannan say "I'm the driver" is the TechDiff episode where they were talking about airplanes and someone (Matt I think?) said "I'm the driver!" Also for reference, 125mph is about 200km/h. Congratulations to Gary!
Heh, just the other day I listened to the Well There's Your Problem episode on the Advanced Passenger Train, so this feels like some nice supplemental material to that history...
So much fun. You’re right it was iconic. So many memories for me, and the HST class 43 was incredible while the APT just made me feel so motion sick compared to the 125.
As someone who knows very little about trains, this video was easy to follow and easy to understand, along with being very entertaining! Great video as always Gary; glad you got to do something so cool and glad you shared it with us! :D
Thanks algo, I didn't know you had a channel! God how I would love to drive an HST, I've done it so much in a sim but nothing can replicate the physical feel of that rumble. One thing that is a bit mad to think about is that if you had that thing going at full pelt, you'd cover the length of NVR in 3:36.
That was so cool! The history was really interesting too, although I remember the Intercity logo with the swallow from many journeys in 1988-9 due to relocating from the south east to the north west!
Can't believe the BBC released this footage of Ralph from Oh Doctor Beeching taking his diesel induction course. Joking aside, great video! Seeing that happy smile as you notched into max throttle and hearing that roar of the engine is truly infectious! 😄
This was very interesting to watch as a Sydneysider; we've got the XPT trains down here, which are based on the Intercity 125 design, running on very long journeys such as to Melbourne
The two pairs of glasses is really throwing me off, it feels so wrong. Loving this format, now I know some nice train history! The subtitles are a bit strange with the way they update extremely occasionally and fill half the screen.
the ice 125 are still in use up here in scotland as part of the inter7city service. it has just been announced that scotrail plan to replace these in the near future.
This was great to watch, Gary I'm curious, what were those beeping sounds while driving? If I were to hear that while driving, I'd be worried that I was about to hit a wall or something
It’s the Driver Safety Device, basically it beeps if you haven’t put a control input in for 90 seconds - checking you’re still there and awake! When you see me stamping my feet I’m resetting it via the foot pedal on the floor. If you don’t respond within a few seconds (or if you take your feet off it) the brakes come on.
I Know. It makes me feel so old! Until just a few years ago these things were taking me up and down the country every single week. Now they are mostly gone from the national rail network and being shown off as a thing of our pasts. The 125s and 225s will both be missed as they are phased out. The new replacements for these leave a lot to be desired.
@@Koda14 never had a chance to ride a 225, I need to before time is up! 80Xs are not great but at least they're quieter and faster... Need new seats though!
In Australia the Intercity 125 was rebranded as the XPT, a premium mid distance express, dunno why they chose a 225km/h trainset for rail networks that mostly can't support more than 100km/h, to take the XPT on a certain common journey that takes just over 2 hours by car takes 4 & half hours on the train.
Technically there are still class 43s running for now in Scotland under scotrail. Don't know for how long like, seems to be some murmurs about them being replaced.
3:39 Thanks for that, Mr. Brannan. I don't think I've seen that shape around my part of the world (Melbourne, Australia). I think our newer "high-speed" locomotives were acquired in a deal with the French, though that's the extent of my awareness of the history on that front. All I know for sure is that interstate trains don't achieve anything close to the speends of this fine machine you're demonstrating in this video. Our "Vlocity" trains can reach up to 160km/h, if the internet is to be believed. Given the extent to which we seem to struggle keeping rail journeys smooth for commuters, I suspect there are geological issues at play. That or we are rubbish at trains.
I suppose this could only really happen at the speed limits required on preserved lines- after all, we've known for years that Gary's built for leisure, not for speed
As a heads up, your captions are mis-timed. The captions (at least near the start) switch ahead too fast. Farther in when you're doing voiceover about the APT and stuff it just puts up entire paragraphs at once and stays up too long.
How was it to gather information, film and edit this video? I imagine it took at least a few days, one for filming, another for the editing, and maybe two or three for the info gathering?
I'm an American with a little bit of an interest in British trains (but a good amount of train knowledge because of my obsession with Japanese ones). I'm wondering, why are they running the East Midlands locomotives with one random car from Great Western? I know its a sort of preservation railway, so they presumably just had it set up so that people like you could run it in a semi-real setup. I'm guessing that's just the way they ended up acquiring their rolling stock, but I still find it funny.
When Tom takes too long to upload the new Adventures, so you go on and upload another anyway
Matt's knew it would be a while due to Tom's sabbatical, so just made his own series anyway back last year.
