"He's like the male version of Veruca Salt" is probably the most accurate description of Dudley I've ever heard. You hit the nail on the head with that one! (I did chuckle a little at your comment about the troll not looking "like the little toys from the 80s." Oh my sweet summer child, troll dolls were created in Denmark in 1959, and were an international sensation by 1963. Demand for the dolls has waxed & waned over the years; the 1980s version is just one of several cresting waves in their popularity.) EDIT TO ADD "Who's keeping track of these points?" It's not shown in the movies, however in the books there are giant magical hourglasses which show the points for each house.

The gem colors correspond to the house colors. All a Professor has to do is say the house name and points added (or taken) and that amount of gems appear or disappear from the jars.

So glad you liked it, Ashleigh. I worked at Universal Hollywood when it opened there and pretty much every day after my shift I would head over to Hogemead and The Boar's Head Inn for Butter Beer and dinner if I was hungry. I loved that place. Some background notes: The reason Harry lives with the Dursleys during school breaks is that Mrs. Dursley is Harry's mother's sister. And she hated his mom because she was jealous she didn't get a letter to Hogwarts. Lord Voldemort couldn't zap Harry a second time because the killing curse he tried to use on harry rebounded on him and nearly killed him. Professor Quirrell ran into what was left of Lord Voldemort in the dark woods and lived off Quirel as a host body while he was recovering. John Cleese was the first ghost head you saw pop up through the table. Nearly Headless Nick he is a Gryffindor ghost who attended Hogwarts in 1492. So much more fun and scares to come.

I was sold the first book by my usual book seller, I didn't want to buy it at first because I thought it was a kids book but he convinced me to try it. I was surprised that the book worked so well for an adult and I bought the second book which was already out at that time and bought all the rest as they came out. I think the movies did a very good job of translating the books, of course some details are omitted but that's always the case when you adapt a book for the cinema.

I'm so excited for you to react to these! I think you're gonna love it, but pretty much every movie after this gets continually darker and scarier :P
To answer your question, it's not in the movie but it is in the book, yes, Professor Quirrell was a real person, he had been a teacher at Hogwarts for a few years prior to Harry's first year, but had taken a year long sabbatical where he went to Albania and encountered Voldemort, then came back to Hogwarts as the Dark Arts teacher, with a Voldemort accessory.
Also, re: Voldy trying to kill Harry again after failing the first time: it's hard to explain without giving full on spoilers, but Voldemort essentially vaporized when he tried killing Harry, he had no body to do magic with, it took him 10 years to regain enough strength to latch onto the back of Quirrell's head, he is not strong enough to have his own body at the moment.

As a kid, I really wasn't involved in the hype for the Harry Potter books until I saw the first movie. I think by the time this movie came out Rowling had written the 3rd or 4th book.
My elementary school reserved the local movie theater for an early morning showing of Sorcerer's Stone on the first weekend it was released. We had the whole building to ourselves because it was before the theater opened for the day. It was free and our school filled three auditoriums. The principal and assistant principal worked the concession stand and handed out free popcorn.
I started reading the series from book 1 the next day until I was caught up. After that, I bought every book and saw every movie at midnight. My love for this franchise probably would've never happened if my school didn't hold that special showing.

Nowadays I am a little less of a fan having noticed more of their faults and because of Rowling herself. But damn do I still love these books. Every kid has that one books series that they grew up with.

In the books, the wands that don't "fit" the person trying them don't do anything at all. Not even a negative reaction. Harry just spends like an hour waving random ones to absolutely no effect, before he finally finds one that works, which produces sparks or fireworks when he first holds it.
Gryffindors value courage, Slytherin values ambition, Ravenclaw values logic/intelligence, Hufflepuff values solidarity/community.
With very few exceptions, Slytherin House are all evil, or at least selfish.
It's weird as hell, I swear in the first flying lesson, she clearly tells them to leave the ground and Neville is the only person that does. I guess it is way cheaper to have everyone to stay on the ground and him be the only person who flies away, but it kind of implies that he's the only person actually successfully flying for the first few seconds

Since I'm not seeing anyone else mention it (I may have missed it and this will end up in the middle of everyone else who's mentioned it), the Hogwarts Houses rely on certain traits for people to get in.
    Gryffindor - brave, adventurous
    Ravenclaw - witty, intelligence
    Hufflepuff - kind, helpful
Slytherin - ambitious, cunning (not necessarily evil, but easy to follow)

2:47 You should see Richard Harris in all his variety. He was a singing King Arthur in “Camelot”, an Englishman adopted by Native Americans in the “A Man Called Horse” trilogy, an accountant caught between the CIA, the Mafia, and a crook who played them both for suckers in “Highpoint”, an Irish politician in “Patriot Games”, a gunslinger in “Unforgiven”, and Emperor Marcus Aurelius in “Gladiator”. (“Highpoint” is probably the least well-known of these, but I included it because it is hilarious, and also has Christopher Plummer, Beverly D’Angelo, and some great character actors including Saul Rubinek and Maury Chakin as a pair of bumbling Mafia goons.)
3:01 People only seem to know Dame Maggie Smith from Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, but that woman has been acting her ass off for a *long* time. She is a true queen of sass, too. Some of her gems: Murder By Death, Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun, Sister Act, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Strange, but worth a watch: The Lady in the Van.
3:36 The actor who plays Dudley isn’t quite such a chonk anymore, but he still plays nogoodniks. You should see him in “The Old Guard” on Netflix.
6:39 Ladies and gentlemen, John Freaking Hurt. A star with a character actor’s CV.
11:17 Alan Rickman had a very distinctive voice - I compare it to Claude Rains’ voice. He’d’ve made an awesome Invisible Man.
21:15 Kids these days are so deprived from not being able to get Battle Chess for their computers. Yeah, I know there are knockoff versions, but the original was awesome.

In the films they did polish Hermione a bit and Ron got a little shortchanged. In the books Hermione was undeniably more clever than the the other two, but Ron tended to think faster in a crisis.
In the devil's snare incident for instance, Hermione did identify the plant and knew light was the solution but she was kinda running in circles looking for wood, while Harry and Ron were trapped. In her panic all she could think was that she needed to make a fire (muggle style) for light and said as much. And Ron was screaming "WOOD!?!? YOU'RE A WITCH YOU HAVE A WAND!!!"

The gentleman in charge of wands is John Hurt, who you know from "Alien". John Hurt was a magnificently versatile and wonderful actor. I first got to know him from "I, Claudius", a BBC mini-series based on a pair of novels by the poet and mythologist Robert Graves. The books and mini-series are about the Emperor Claudius and how history misjudges him. Hurt plays the absolutely out of his mind Caligula, in a performance so hysterically funny and creepily scary it just about steals the show.
Here's the only scene featuring him I could find on YT: th-cam.com/video/Fmum3glL1DA/w-d-xo.html (the other character calls him "Jove" because Caligula decided he was a mortal form of the god Jupiter, aka Jove). Enjoy!
