    Fun fact: in German the "unlike some other Robin Hoods" joke replaces "I can speak with an english accent" with "I do not cost the producers 5 million", Italy and France replace it with "I do not dance with wolves" and Quebec replaces it with "I accept to wear tights".

    The “Unlike other Robinhoods I can speak in an English accent” is a dig at the fact that Kevin Cosner didn’t even bother trying to do an English accent in the movie Robinhood: Prince of Thieves. Several parts of the movie were actually openly mocking that movie.

    • @FaethorFerenzcy
      @FaethorFerenzcy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      In the english version yes, they where mocking Costners Robin Hood. In other languages they where just mocking Costner in general ( in german it was Costners salary for Robin Hood, in French and Italy it was about Dancing with the Wolves, in Quebec it translated something about Costner refused to wear tights...)

    • @charlesrense5199
      @charlesrense5199 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm actually okay with Costners lack of accent. Back in the olden days people didn't bother with trying to match the accent so much, and I think that's way better than having a bad accent throughout.
      The film still doesn't hold up, but I think that was the right call at least.

    • @fenix6297
      @fenix6297 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@charlesrense5199 I have to disagree. Prince of Thieves came out in 1991, where it was actually pretty common for an actor to at least attempt to do the accent.
      But, the major problem with Costner's lack of an accent, is he is literally the ONLY PERSON in the film that didn't even try one. You have Christian Slater doing a harsh British, Morgan Friedman doing an Arabic accent, and Costner (who was paid $40 MILLION for the role) didn't even try to do it?
      You have a cast of hundreds, dozens of secondary and minor characters, an awesome Maid Marian - all of which had decent accents. But, your main character has a Midwestern American - he stuck out like a sore thumb.
      That's why people had an issue with it. If the movie had gone with no accents, it wouldn't be a big deal. But, to have your lead and title character to be literally the only one without was a bad choice.

    • @charlesrense5199
      @charlesrense5199 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@fenix6297 yeah, but what I meant was that to me that harkens back to the old ways. Also, around the same time as Prince of Theives, Sean Connery was playing a Russian submarine commander with a Scottish accent. Having previously played an Irish beat cop with a Scottish accent, and a Spanish immortal by way of ancient egypt with a Scottish accent (opposite a guy with a Belgian accent playing a Scot!)

    • @fenix6297
      @fenix6297 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@charlesrense5199 Well yeah - that was Sean Connery. He was hired mostly for being Sean Connery was was likewise dinged for his accent at times (I specifically remember people commenting on Hunt for Red October).
      But, also - in those films, he wasn't the lead nor was he the only person doing a wrong/incorrect accent. And the immortals in Highlander at least had the excuse of living thousands of years and moving around.
      If you have a movie full of incorrect accents, people are mostly going to ignore it.
      When you have a movie full of relatively correct accents and your lead character is literally the only person without one, it stands out a lot more which is why Costner was called out on it.
      That also doesn't address that Connery in those films was playing unknown or fictional characters - and Costner was playing one of the best known folk heroes of British History. It's akin to playing Davy Crockett with a British accent in a John Wayne film. It just doesn't fit.

      The great thing is... everyone involved knew that as soon as they were cast in a Mel Brooks film. I think if someone showed up on set, actually taking themselves seriously.... they'd probably be escorted off the set and recast. I mean, it's Mel Brooks, you'd better know what you signed up for right? There is a time and place for deadly serious acting ala Daniel Day Lewis.... but it just has no place in a Mel Brooks film. Embrace the silly, be a bit ridiculous and (hopefully) have a good time. I also suspect these films would be genuine fun to work on. Every interview I've ever seen has people raving about how much fun they had making whatever Brooks film they were asked about. I think seriousness is effectively banished from these films, fun and humor are cultivated... and it shows in the results.

      Errol Flynn had a Tasmanian accent which to the ears of an American audience, is close enough!
      ...The over dramatic acting in early movies may seem silly to modern audiences, but it was necessary to the then less experienced audiences of the old days who may not have had very many "stock characters" or "situations" in their minds to draw from, so actors had to kind of "hit the audience over the head" with their acting, so the audience could be up to speed with what was going on in a 2 hour movie. Later, actors could be more subtle or ambiguous, because the more modern audience grew up watching movies & TV so had plenty of similar characters and situations in their minds where they could "get it" without being hit over the head with it.
