Triumph played in Florida the night before this performance and took the red eye to California. They didn’t have time to do a sound check before performing. Gil Moore, the drummer, is using a borrowed drum set. The performance was mind blowing but it gets even more awesome when you realize the circumstances behind it!

That's good trivia to know about the Florida concert the night before... I live in Florida but I did not know that... and as far as that drum set I always figured that was like a studio drum set that they had brought to that gig

Hair pulled up under a baseball cap, sunglasses on, doing the same as me. I looked at him twice and said "You're Rik Emmitt aren't you?" He replied "Yes". I said "Don't worry, I won't say anything". Rik Emmett !! One of my early rock idols. He slung his guitar high like that because he played classical and flamenco guitar to start with. In guitar posture you have the Rik position ⬆️ and the Emppu position⬇️and everywhere in between 😂

I always thought it looked really cool the way he held his guitar up high... Steve Howe also did that...

That was a huge concert for them. They were huge in Canada, but the US wasn’t that interested. Then fate intervened and I’m not sure of the entire story but they got the invitation to the US FEST. After that they were never doubted again.

Triumph was huge at that time. I was in high school. Lots of comparisons to Rush (3 piece from Canada). Amazing stuff.

Not the U.S. festival, but the Us Festival. Glen Helen park, Devore, California. I got to go to both Us 82 and Us 83. Those were my junior and senior years in HS. My dad was an executive with the county and I had all access all three days, both events. It was a hell of a show. I asked my dad if he could get a few tickets for some friends. He handed me a manilla envelope full of tickets. I gave away about 200 general admission passes to my friends at school. Such a good time.
I'm glad you guys picked Triumph and this particular performance. I think they are seriously under-rated. Their sound is so good. I got into them about 1980 and haven't looked back. Several of their performances at Us 83 were captured and they are all awesome. They were quite a bit better than some other performers who were so wasted by the time they went on, they did not deliver. Steve Wozniak, introduced the band that day. Great stuff!

This was metal day of the festival. They shared the stage with Van Halen, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Quiet Riot, but they pretty much stole the show. Almost any song you check out by them is a live version because that's their strength, not just the pyro and lasers but just how tight they play together.. Proud to say class of 85 here, this was my generation.

To this day Rik is a respected player. I was lucky to have won backstage passes and front row seats Sport of Kings tour. Rik Emmitt was one of my guitar heroes. He was extremely kind to me. Actually asked me how my playing was doing after telling him l played guitar. Signed my pass and my OP Hoodie l wore that night. They drank chocolate milk backstage. Real guys, no drugs, booze. They were the good guys during a time of total debauchery. The men in white. TRIUMPH. Love every album.

What a great band. Such great musicianship and great vocals between Rick Emmett and Gil Moore. Also smart businessmen. They were the only performers at the US Festival to negotiate in the copyright to their performance. They still get paid every time someone watches it
