Funny thing is that the two smallest colossi are the most aggressive and their battle strategies are challenging and fairly unique, even to each other. A reminder that even something your size, like a bull, lion, or a wolf, can be just as deadly as a walking skyscraper with a sword.

Two of your all-time favorite titles (Silent Hill 2 and Shadow of the Colossus) both involve a doomed man fueled by desperation and wandering alone through a vast yet mostly-vacant wasteland. Coincidentally, these are my two favorite games as well. Conclusion: There's a very real possibility that we are fucked in the head. At least you have a cool job, though. Dick.

Shadow of the Colossus and Silent Hill 2 are literally my favorite games. Both extremely depressing games about broken men refusing to let go of their dead wives/fianceés. Pretty fucked indeed.
No game I've played in all my years of basement-dwelling has come even remotely close to rivaling the sense of wonder and engagement I felt the first time I played Shadow of the Colossus. The next time somebody tells you that games aren't "art", you loan them your copy of this game and you set that fucker straight.
davethehostage I completely agree. I personally think Shadow of the Colossus is the best game ever made and no other game has ever even come close. The atmosphere, the scenery, the sense of wonder you feel as you try to piece together what happened to this majestic country and what the future has in store for your character. And the soundtrack is the best thing I've ever heard in a game... full symphony orchestra playing the most epic music I've ever heard. Not to mention scaling incredible 200 ft tall Colossi with nothing but your trusty bow and a small sword to bring that fucker down!
I think my favorite thing about it (though the combat and the exploration are both wonderful) is the way that the game makes you feel like the villain. We're so used to games giving us a fist-bump and a chest full of gold, it really sticks out how this one plays sorrowful music and does those slow-motion death scenes to remind you of how much more worthy of life these majestic creatures are than your own obsessive necromancer self.
Fun Fact: The only reason beloved love interest was quasi-killed off pre-game was because she was foretold to be the catalyst for the rise of an ancient evil sealed away for eons. Which is (SPOILER WARNING) what Wander eventually ends up doing because the ancient evil promises to bring his beloved back from dying so she wouldn't be the reason for an ancient evil coming back.
Yo dawg, I heard you were killed to stop an ancient evil. So Imma unleash an ancient evil to resurrect you and show the mob we don't have to worry about ancient evils!
avicenna It's kind of interesting that your criticism of Half Life and Silent Hill are also things that Yahtzee bring up in his reviews of those games as well.
I come back to Shadow of the Colossus once every year. It is a true joy to behold everytime I play it. This is what gaming should be about, the experience, the adventure, the immersion, the larger than life scale, the love you develop for a game, the memories you will never lose, and a game that you will replay over and over again for decades. For me it's up there with The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, MGS3 and so many more. :)
+KikBlava I honestly have yet to play anything that compares to this game in terms of scale and pacing. Seriously, there are mmorpgs out there that have a smaller sense of scale than this game.
megajoeify Uhh, don't get me started on MMORPGS, went back to the starter edition of WOW and, I'm so bored! I love the world in it but it's so dull when you start up a new character. XD
This game is a complete masterpiece. Unlike almost every other game, Shadow of the Colossus doesn't overwhelm you with missions to do. It just lets you complete freedom to explore the world, and more importantly it makes you introspect your own feelings. It makes you feel insignificant in face of this large world and in face of the passage of time. Everywhere in this world you feel the ineluctable passage of time as you visit ancient and forgotten ruins from an era long gone. And you feel the sorrow and the loneliness of the protagonist at such a high degree. The game covers topics like loneliness, melancholy, death, loss, pain, suffering, sacrifice, desperation, courage, redemption.
Philip Pruett You say that but Dark souls has a constant stream of enemies that you have to beat before you get to the bosses, SOTC has 16 enemies and thats it.
I AM HERE TO ANNOUNCE to nobody in particular that ICO is a pretty solid game, even from a modern lens. I can say this, because I finished it for the first time ever today, mid-August, 2022. I have begun my journey to slay the colossi, and when my only immediate complaint is floaty jumping, and everything else is ridiculously impressive, something is going quite right.
Even though it wasn't much of a colossus, I had a lot of fun with the small colossus that knocked down pillars. Fuck the one you shake a torch at though.
It occurs to me (probably because I was really in to archery a few years back) that firing a bow really would be a good way to increase your grip strength. Though to get the most out of it you'd have to switch hands occasionally, since the type of grip you use on the bow is different from the type you use on the string and arrow.
When Shadow of the Colossus was initially imagined, the creator pitched the idea of having 48 colossi in the game. He realized that there was no way in hell they'd be able to pull that off in a reasonable time frame, however, and most of those 48 never got to real development. The team then settled on 24, which you'll notice is a number bigger than the 16 which are now in the game. Those other 8 were in some stage of development with some concept art of it, and in some cases were partially functional before being cut from the game for one reason or another. While they were never officially given names, they were given the following code names: Spider, Monkey, Sirius, Worm, Phoenix, Griffon, Devil, and Roc. Some were so far in development that there's actual test footage of them that still exists, but they were all discarded for various reasons. Spider was supposed to be defeated by slashing at its legs from the back of Agro, but they couldn't get it to work very well and didn't want to create a whole new animation (slashing from horseback) just for one fight (though they made it anyways and it still exists is certain versions of the game). Phoenix was too difficult; Wander was losing too much HP falling from it and the arena it required was far too big. Rok was supposed to be shot down from the sky, but the developers were having difficulty getting the collision detection from him hitting the ground to work properly. Really would have liked to see some of these in action Monkey in particular looked sweet. Instead we got the dumb tiny colossi.
joyboy232 They planned 48 in the beginning but I'm kinda glad they didn't it's better to have 16 awesome Colossi than 24 or 48 less entertaining ones. Now if they could make a remake with the 48 that'd be awesome.
Every now and then this pops up under suggested and I can't help but watch it again because it's damn good, damn damn good good damn good damn damn.... good.
There's an indie game called Titan souls coming out. You only fight big bosses and it looks unforgiving as fuck. Not completely similar in gameplay to souls or colossus but looks interesting.
I don't know if that'd work. Shadow of the Colossus is more a puzzle game than anything. The fact that you don't take much damage in the game is deliberate, the punishing difficulty of a Souls game would just make starting bosses over and over again more tedious than anything. The action-oriented boss fights in Dark Souls counter the repetitiveness of repeating them because every fight is a tense and fun moment in the game. SotC's more slow paced movement just wouldn't mesh with a Souls game's and fast-paced action. Maybe if Team ICO and From both worked on it and took like, seven years, *MAYBE* it'd work out then but when you combine genres like that, any tiny minuscule thing can break the game completely so it'd probably be an extremely stressful development hell.
Just give me a good Shadow of the Colossus clone but with one hundred colossi! Something that would contrast SOTC, over-the-top anime plot where a kid who wants to be the best has to fight 100 insanely big creatures.
I only just recently finsished ico (today actually), an now I'm contemplating what I think of it. I actually bought the hd version a while ago but only played for a bit then because I found it kinda boring at first. But last weekend I started over and I must say it grew on me. What I like is that you really have to think to play it, no tutorials or even a hint to complete a puzzle wich are sometimes more straight forward as it first seems. Some may find the puzzles boring but the game has an appropiate length (it's possible to complete it in less then 2 hours) so it doesn't outstay it's welcome. There is a mystery shrouding the characters and the surroundings but it isn't just that nor is it a cliche quest to save a princess. It's about the feeling of being left to a fate of hopeless solitude. Alone and frightened, you suddenly find a kindred spirit like a small flame in the darkness. Together, you feel you have a chance of escape and a friendship is forged from compassion and a shared longing for freedom.
Tbh who would have expected him to dislike Shadow? The only people that don't like it are casual gamers, trolls and pricks who hate everything that has a metascore higher than 80.
Zenthex I couldn't get into the game because my character suddenly started doing the Goldeneye 64 shuffle on his horse in midair. Possibly a damaged disc, mind you.
The last bit of this review can be applied to Dark Souls, too: It has definite problems, but it offers an experience unlike basically every other game besides Demon's Souls and soon Dark Souls 2.
And then a while later, he found the perfect game: Portal, a game he literally could not find fault with. From this moment on, I will only ever be able to imagine Chell as a disembodied breast. Portal-transport is close enough to Prince of Persia-style free running, so the analogy actually holds up decently well.
Not "Technically"!! If it wasn't for the last pair of chromosomes out of our 23 pairs we would all be female-like since it all goes like this: 1(XX), 2(XX), 3(XX), ..., 21(XX), 22(XX), 23(X[X or Y]); the "Y" is just an X but shorter x (chromosomes just happen to look like Xs or crosses), however that would get confusing writing it down like this "Xx" depending on the handwriting and/or font.
robin huijbregts I believe this is an example of someone with limited knowledge of biology wanting to educate me on a subject i already know about, hence my initial comment.
phoenixsplash135 I'm sorry your words implied that "men have AN X chromosome" as in singular, while the reality of it all we are mostly X chromosome, that is not a technicality! And I do have a "limited knowledge of biology" is called I'm still going to school for it!!! [You didn't have to pull the "I'm smarter than anyone else" trope we all have "limited knowledge"; yes it can be vast, but, vast does not equal limitless!]
I now own all three versions of the game. On PS2, PS3 and PS4. And the newest version is of course the best. I spend the first six hours adventuring the land, I knew so well. And I loved it all. This is the best game ever made.
I find that after watching all of his reviews multiple times, you can still enjoy them my watching them on mute and trying to figure out what the hell he is talking about just by looking at the absurd images.
I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this review. That witty creativity is fuckin priceless. This has got to be your best I've seen this far =) ...also love the game btw.
From how most of your videos end that was alot more praise then I expected. Nothing wrong with telling a good game what's good and a bad game what's bad.
I am telling you this without a doubt, anybody that can try Shadow of the Colossus and not understand why people say it's one of the greatest games ever made should just give up on gaming. Seriously. You don't have to like the game at all, but if you can't recognize why people say it's so great, there's something wrong with you. Personally, I didn't even finish the game. Couldn't get into that much. But I can see why people called it a masterpiece.
My friend recommended me to play Shadow of the Colossus and I must say I was very surprised at how such a simple concept of a game could be so riveting to play. It is definitely a game people must play before they die.
The great thing about shadow of the colossus is that the exploration in itself is a reward, sure there are lizards and fruit to find but it's much more satisfying to find a really lovely area with great scenery and look around it. I've found some incredible places just fucking around in this game, I'll see a rock peaking up into the sky and think "Oh I've got to climb that". And then I do, the sunlight glares down over everything, I look around and am amased at how picturesque every angle is.
I have a feeling that the people who dislike this game are the same ones who hate Dark Souls. They're a lot alike; both have a near-empty world you don't understand, very few cutscenes and dialogue, almost no music, incredibly difficult boss battles, and a very depressing mood and atmosphere.
I adore SotC but I detest Dark Souls. With Dark Souls you mostly have to learn patterns so it's just trial and error. Also the hitboxes are buggy as fuck
The only thing which bugged me about this great game were the controls, which I didn't find to be very intuitive at all, but then, I have a PC background, so I guess that's understandable.
+SanitysEdge Or maybe they took the SH 2 approach in using the controls for immersion, because when you look at it, you're just a guy who stole a sacred-sword, went to a forbidden place, doesn't know who to fight (when you see the attack animation he's just swinging the sword like it was a stick) and is trying to kill big-ass monsters, then having problems climbing a wall doesn't look so stupid
+cryzero That's what I saw when I played it. Wander (that's the main character's name) is more of an archer/equestrian. It explains is lack of skill with a sword, while being really good at riding and shooting.
To be fair, the characters in Ico are separated by a language barrier so there wouldn't be too much of a point communicating when one side doesn't understand what the hell the other side is saying.
I just got this game because of this review, and it's amazing. The animation for wander's running is weird, but all the other animations are spectacular! I love the way tumble off a giant if you are not holding on to him.
This game is featured in the 2007 movie Reign Over Me, about a severely post traumatically distressed Adam Sandler and his rekindling a friendship with old college roommate Don Cheadle. For movie featuring Adam Sandler it shows a huge amount of emotional depth and is actually quite a good film. This game is played by Adam Sandler's character a lot to distract him from life. Good to know Yahtzee thinks its actually a good one.
Honestly, I didn't think Shadow of the Colossus was amazing, but more OK. The controls were awkward, the landscape was built to look beautiful, but does not anymore, and while it is cool when games don't tell you what to do, it was necessary in this. Thankfully I still had the booklet. Although I also like SH3's atmosphere more than SH 2's, so what do I know?
Croyles Alright, I gave SoC another go yesterday, and wow. Just wow. I was so wrong. I still prefer SH3 to SH2 in atmosphere, but only because you feel trapped in the mall where in SH2, you are mostly in the town which makes me feel like I can get away easily. I've always preferred SH2 to SH3 in the story. Everything was worked to be in James's head, such as Pyramid Head representing his guilt. You can only run away during the "boss battles", and the Pyramid Head twins kill themselves when James admits to killing his wife. Who knows, maybe the fact I played it 6 times to get the other endings made the game seem dull to me.
Shadow of the Colossus sits comfortably on the throne in gaming heaven for me. It doesn't even feel like a game, it's just one of my fondest memories/experiences and I can relive it whenever I want!
Danmarinja Except the horse is an ass who doesn't want to co-operate with you. I shouldn't have to be constantly whipping it. That't not how horses work, and as far as turning goes it's a pretty accurate drunk driving simulator.
Batman You're not controlling the horse(Agro) you're controlling the guy (Wander) controlling the horse, so its obvious it's a bit hard, and the horse is pretty smart, you only need to direct it and it will avoid wall and cliffs by it self, allowing you to do other things, this is necessary to defeat the tenth Colossus.
+RandomlyGeneratedUser To add to that the collection also has a better frame rate, and is in stereoscopic 3D (if you have a 3DTV,) which looks amazing!!!
"[...] But these are the small complaints of a tiny, irrelevant mouse clinging to the back of a roaring lion, with a jetpack." The images only make this sentence even more awesome. AND accurate.
I suppose so. But, the "clone" of the game, for me at the very least did not feel the same. Either it being for a nostalgia factor or just how the overall game ran. It did -not- feel like the same game, and for some reasons it isn't for me. It honestly felt clunky for me. Now, perhaps I am mistaken, and it is amazing and just don't know what a good game is, or perhaps somewhere along the lines the download became corrupted, for me? It just did not feel like the exact same game I plopped into the PlayStation 2.
Dzko Well it was the same. In every way. So yeah. It's just lost it's nostalgia factor on you. The clunky controls were probably there form the beginning. Unless thats not what you mean by cluinky. In which case I still have no idea what you're on about.
Am I the only one who finds that the "E" in the escapist title screen seems like it's doing a Nazi salute? Because I've taken to reflexively returning the salute.
Malcolm Streitfeld They're boring because they lack substance. I'm all for artistry in games but having long drawn out walking segments and simple puzzles that barely break up the gameplay does not count as being artistic. It's more like Team ICO hit the deadline and said "We'll just say its supposed to be symbolic." Also the story in both games has been beaten done so many times prior so don't try to use that in your argument.
Bi$harp You argue that it's a lack of substance, and that the long and drawn out segments are not really symbolic, but you can subjectively fucking argue anything. What lacks substance is your argument. Every Picasso ever is just a bunch of shitty colors on a piece of cloth. People say there's symbolism and depth in them, but really it's just paint. It was all an illusion so that he could make money.
i like the fact you point out the good bits and then wigh it up with the bits you don't like at least you dont just say the games bad and never say why
Eh. I started playing it not too long ago and I'm only at the 12th one, but it feels really repetitive. There's almost nothing in the overworld and other than the flying one, the colossi really don't impress me.
The only complaint I have with it is how the bosses end. Every sound is meaty and you feel like a badass but also tiny as you chip away at their health. Then when you make the final stab...there's just a tiny 'tink' and all other sounds cut out. They should have had SOME sort of climax noise.
Don't worry man, I care! So everything is okay. Also for the climatic sound bit, I think having it go completely silent is actually good. All you hear is the colossus groaning in pain while it dies (depending on which one you're fighting some are silent) and the very low pitch music in the back ground. The silence is supposed to have what you just did settle in your mind. Like, "Oh shit I'm a little guy and I just took out the biggest fucker on the planet... damn" it gives you this epic feel as if you accomplished something. Having a big climatic noise when you kill the boss like "WAAAAAH," or "BAAAAM!" It would ruin the entire moment and just be dumb. The silence was meant feel epic and slightly depressing as you slowly learn all of the colossi or kinda cool guys... That's my opinion and if you meant by climactic as in something entirely different. I feel dumb.
Bbmanmegyer I was thinking an explosion drum, Inception BWA, or other such things. But I didn't mean as it dies. I mean the final hit. There's no low tone music or groan until the cutscene that appears AFTER where I'm talking about. Hell, even adding in the normal flesh piercing noise would be fine. Instead when you kill a Collossus, you just get a sound quieter than what you would get from dropping a nail on a tile floor.
***** Of course, but I don't mean them falling to their death. And I understand that the explosion drum was overkill (and mostly a joke), but the final stab is actually silent. At least make that louder than the rest. OR BE THERE AT ALL. You will still get the reflection moment before and during the cutscene. Why is it you guys fail to understand that I mean the final blow, not the death itself?
Can you consider any of these zero punctuation videos a review? Seriously, does _anyone_ rely on this guy's reviews before purchasing a game? if I hadn't played Shadow of the Colossus, I'd have *nooo* god damn idea what he was yammering about. None.
Absolutely. In general he has three modes: Negative, Extra-Negative, & Extra-Super-Negative. So whenever he says something good about a game, it stands out like crazy. Zero Punctuation is the only reason I bought demon's souls & the deus ex sequel, and I regret neither.
existenceisrelative Sounds like a piss poor way to judge how to spend your fifty bucks. kierany9 Now _that_ makes sense. He should really reconsider his video titles. ***** Wouldn't be surprised. I have _a lot_ of personal problems.
I really love this game. I used to spend up to at least 2 hours between colossi just exploring and looking for the altars and magical lizards etc. sprinkled across the landscape like sugar.
Everyone told me to play Shadow of the Colossus because I love environmental games so much. So I finally sat down to play it and... it was boring as shit. Seriously. 90% of the game revolves around you just riding a horse through nothing and most of the colossi can't be beaten without looking into some walkthrough or guide so wtf is the point? Geez. At least Starcraft challenges my brain. I blundered through the entire campaign just by the seat of my pants and at the end I still wanted more. Can't say that about Shadows of Colossal boredom.
wait, you are defending star-craft because "it challenges your brain" yet you are using the fact that you cant beat the colossal because it too hard to figure out. your agruement is incorrect because you are using the same reasons to prove to opposite points. you are basically creating two of the same number except one is positive and the other one is negative when you add it up just leave at zero, square one, you did nothing to prove a point other than being a hypocrite. I am not trying to defend SoTC, however i am simply pointing out the flaws upon your statement
Well of course you like starcraft more, RTS' are for cowards, and it takes balls the size of a small colossi to kill a gigantic eagle by letting it slingshot you into the air and then using the downward force of your fall to stab right through it's skull and kill it instantly. That's the kinda shit your marines do on the daily while you're clicking them around.
i guess it might be subjective. games have gotten to a point where apparently the more you have, the more entertaining it is? Id like to call bullshit on that. Look at assassin's creed. Nothing is focused, nothing is important, and the amount of power the machine has to put into putting a realistic illusion rarely serves a gameplay function (and certainly not a gameplay pay off). SOTC knows how to be quiet, and rarely do games know how to do that any more. it uses implicit narration, contrasting scale, the use of ambience act, the repetition and rhythm of playing a game, and subtractive design to create something immersive, contemplative, foreign, mature, and ultimately beautiful. Star Craft II is fun, and beloved by all. But is it a game that can expand gaming as a medium? Is it a game that communicate something like beauty, nature, and serene. Nope. It pulls on the same threads of call of duty, of fighter games (which I've come to respect), and most games in general. It serves to create winners and losers, to stroke egos (which is totally fine, but we have enough games that do the same). SOTC plays with your heart. With every victory you feel like you've stabbed a heart. With every progression you feel good about, your character slowly corrupts. It does all this without being obvious, and because of how Ueda does his games with such subtlty, like a reader respecting good writing in a novel, a gamer can't help respect just damn good game design being woven with narratology from this game. To this, is why many games defend SOTC as a piece of art. Even Roger Ebert was presented SOTC by the online public as an argument for art in games. It's a smart game, maybe the pulp fiction of games.
in the end, i guess star craft can easily be stemming off of the obvious. War and military strategies, chess, Kriegsspiel, aliens vs. predator vs. humans. But what the fuck is ICO and SOTC based off of? Human touch? the Tower of Babel and Nimrod? Giorgio De Chirico's paintings? In the end, instead of giving you obvious answers, it leaves you asking about more about its lore, and more about its world. And look at its environment. Do you see a cluster-fest? No! You just see good compositional skills, good camera work in game, good use of music and sound, amazing animation, and fucking fantastic use of scale.
The problem with you people is you're spoiled, this game is supposed to feel empty, it's supposed to have that feeling of despair and that ever lingering feeling of why am I doing this. It's depressing and it makes you feel small and frustrated and lonely. It's a game that is built so when you look out on the horizon part of you goes "wow that's beautiful" and part of you goes "It feels broken and unfinished and I don't know why" it's part of the mystery and intrigue. The whole game is just this feeling of am I doing the right thing. As for the colossi they aren't there to kill you they aren't giant rampaging monsters they are these beautiful things you are killing because some voice in the sky told you if you do you'll save this girl.
Here I am, six years out from this review and even further away from having played Shadow of the Colossus, and I had no idea there was a way to improve your grip gauge.
The fact that my thoughts and the little voice inside my head that helps me think and read stuff mimics Yahtzee's voice and way of speaking is pretty unnerving. I have no idea if I like the fact or not, but at least it keeps me entertained during school as I criticize everything my teachers do.
You know a game is good when Yahtzee's only fault is that one or two of the monsters are too small and the grip gauge makes it too real.
Or when it's Portal. Then it has no flaws
Really? I thought it would be from the fact that he said, and I quote, “it’s just damn good.”
Funny thing is that the two smallest colossi are the most aggressive and their battle strategies are challenging and fairly unique, even to each other. A reminder that even something your size, like a bull, lion, or a wolf, can be just as deadly as a walking skyscraper with a sword.

It's kind of interesting that your criticism of Half Life and Silent Hill are also things that Yahtzee bring up in his reviews of those games as well.
I'm pretty sure the protagonist was giant tit in several of the later prince of persia sequels.
+KikBlava And its soundtrack kicks up the boss fights another notch.
+KikBlava Could not have said it better,i feel bad for those who never experienced this game.
XD
so, halo 3? I agree
1:33 I think what you're trying to say is that she is the only thing in this plot with 'two' X chromosomes (Males have XY, Females have XX).
I usually don't give a shit about a video game's soundtrack but this one is fucking wonderful.
Jacob Vidrine Kow Otani is a genius.
Jacob Vidrine I know right! It's by far the most beautiful music I've ever heard in a game and really elevates the adventure
So exactly what dark souls is.
I like that you can go back and look up a Yahtzee video from a decade ago and his content and his voice are still consistent
His voice is noticeably different thanks to several early mics, and he also seemed to talk faster, with the review zipping by as a result.
I wish they put in all 24 colossi.
joyboy232 They planned 48 in the beginning but I'm kinda glad they didn't it's better to have 16 awesome Colossi than 24 or 48 less entertaining ones. Now if they could make a remake with the 48 that'd be awesome.
nah it would be better 32 so they can develop them better
+yahir Lopez *24 I feel dumb now
+yahir Lopez They originally wanted to put 64
Djordje Gusman yeah i know but i say 24 so they can develop 14 new colossi to focus more
Every now and then this pops up under suggested and I can't help but watch it again because it's damn good, damn damn good good damn good damn damn.... good.
Definitely in my top five games ever, I yearn for a game that is Souls/Collossus hybrid...that would be #1
There's an indie game called Titan souls coming out. You only fight big bosses and it looks unforgiving as fuck. Not completely similar in gameplay to souls or colossus but looks interesting.
sweet thanks for that
I don't know if that'd work.
Something that would contrast SOTC, over-the-top anime plot where a kid who wants to be the best has to fight 100 insanely big creatures.
fuck yeah lol
Yahtzee likes my favourite game of all time.
Excuse me I need to go fan myself in a corner so I don't pass out from glee.
Tbh who would have expected him to dislike Shadow? The only people that don't like it are casual gamers, trolls and pricks who hate everything that has a metascore higher than 80.
DAMN GOOD DAMN DAMN GOOD GOOD DAMN GOOD DAMN DAMN. GOOD. XD
lmfao "the bike turns into a beeaahhrrr" this is why I watch this channel
2:34 Thank you for mentioning this lol that always annoyed me in the game
anyone who says they can't get into this game has the attention span of a squirrel on speed.
So basically any CoD gamer.
Fixin Good Shots fired
Zenthex Of course I have the attention span of a squirrel on speed. That's why I watch a show literally called "Zero Punctuation."
Zenthex I couldn't get into the game because my character suddenly started doing the Goldeneye 64 shuffle on his horse in midair. Possibly a damaged disc, mind you.
I have the attention span of a flea and I kinda want to play this game. Does this mean humanity is evolving?
"Damn good job. Damn good bloody good damn good job."
I found this game to be a masterpiece, very personal and gripping
Love that pun 😆
Sailor Italy hahaha thank you xD

chstacy33 IT'S HAPPENING!
But it's not being made by Team Ico... :(
His pronunciation of "tonguing" at 0:47 made me shiver with delight.
The last bit of this review can be applied to Dark Souls, too: It has definite problems, but it offers an experience unlike basically every other game besides Demon's Souls and soon Dark Souls 2.
R'Kdairos Zo'dhyac yup
Dark Souls 2 is amazing. Also, hello from the future.
Avery Cecil WOAH DUDE ARE YOU A TIME TRAVELER.
The Arbitration How did you figure that out? REALITY IS COLLAPSING!
Avery Cecil WOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
Yahtzee should do the last guardian mock review like duke nukem forever then the game might come out finally
"Unusual aggressive sleep button" I never thought about it like that till now.
I enjoy watching a video where he actually likes a game he’s reviewing
"With monsters so large you can hollow them out and use them as low income housing."
... Did yahtzee just make an enders game reference?
Shadow of the Colossus is just freaking amazing. One of my favorites in the PS2 era.
And then a while later, he found the perfect game: Portal, a game he literally could not find fault with. From this moment on, I will only ever be able to imagine Chell as a disembodied breast. Portal-transport is close enough to Prince of Persia-style free running, so the analogy actually holds up decently well.
One of the few games to actually have an emotional impact on me. Beautiful example of minimalist storytelling done absolutely right.
Technically all men have an X chromosome...
Not "Technically"!! If it wasn't for the last pair of chromosomes out of our 23 pairs we would all be female-like since it all goes like this: 1(XX), 2(XX), 3(XX), ..., 21(XX), 22(XX), 23(X[X or Y]); the "Y" is just an X but shorter x (chromosomes just happen to look like Xs or crosses), however that would get confusing writing it down like this "Xx" depending on the handwriting and/or font.
sion8 uuhm
robin huijbregts I believe this is an example of someone with limited knowledge of biology wanting to educate me on a subject i already know about, hence my initial comment.
phoenixsplash135
I'm sorry your words implied that "men have AN X chromosome" as in singular, while the reality of it all we are mostly X chromosome, that is not a technicality! And I do have a "limited knowledge of biology" is called I'm still going to school for it!!!
[You didn't have to pull the "I'm smarter than anyone else" trope we all have "limited knowledge"; yes it can be vast, but, vast does not equal limitless!]
robin huijbregts
I'm not really sure what your answer means?
I now own all three versions of the game. On PS2, PS3 and PS4. And the newest version is of course the best. I spend the first six hours adventuring the land, I knew so well. And I loved it all.
This is the best game ever made.
I find that after watching all of his reviews multiple times, you can still enjoy them my watching them on mute and trying to figure out what the hell he is talking about just by looking at the absurd images.
Hey wow a review where I agree about everything!
I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this review. That witty creativity is fuckin priceless. This has got to be your best I've seen this far =) ...also love the game btw.
Ive never yelled at a horse so much
2:43 Oh good lord, my sides xD
this is the only thing on youtube that i can watch with no ads.
FINALLY, a game that Zero Punctuation's love! XD
4:30 my reaction exactly after I played SotC on PS2, few years later my friend let me borrow his HD collection on PS3 and I loved this game even more.
Just a tip, try setting the video speed to 0.5.
Better tip, set it to 1.5!
***** Sounds like a disclaimer of a drug commercial.
Wow, 0.5. that was a fine damn good tip.....1.5.. oh my god....
i dont have that option :'( #fuckgoogleplusinyoutube
i dont, i think its disabled for any one not using Google chrome, witch brings me back to my original comment #fuckgoogleplusinyoutube ;)
Asura R-R No offense but that list is shit
"A particular hedgehog in my prostate" What a swell metaphor.
"Love is indistinguishable from brain damage." Truer words have never been spoken!
this sorta new youtube feature that you can slowdown the video really helps this channel
+Thales Monteiro just watch Judging by the cover, its the same as watching ZP on 0.5
I have a feeling that the people who dislike this game are the same ones who hate Dark Souls.
Also the hitboxes are buggy as fuck
almost no music? in sotc?
It took me years to realize how good that bike/bear analogy is.
+SanitysEdge well... I played it on the PS 2 and the camera controls really aren't that hot. They're very annoying to handle.
+cryzero That's what I saw when I played it. Wander (that's the main character's name) is more of an archer/equestrian. It explains is lack of skill with a sword, while being really good at riding and shooting.
To be fair, the characters in Ico are separated by a language barrier so there wouldn't be too much of a point communicating when one side doesn't understand what the hell the other side is saying.
liked this so much I tried clicking "like" twice................................
does this mean im stupid?
yes
[Furfagging Intensifies] fank u!!!
Tom Hewitt ur not only 1
Actually amazing that a video from eight years ago has the same awesome quality as the series today.
Shadow Of The Colossus is a masterpiece. Probably the 3rd best game i've ever played.
Eternal Light whats 1st & 2nd?
John Marco Reyes The Last Of Us and Final Fantasy XII.
Chris Karanassios Which boss are you talking about?
Chris Karanassios you're not grinding hard enough
Chris Karanassios Then you made the common mistake that you didn't create more than one save files in different areas.
I just got this game because of this review, and it's amazing. The animation for wander's running is weird, but all the other animations are spectacular! I love the way tumble off a giant if you are not holding on to him.
Whoa whoa whoa, hold up...was this review...positive!?
This game is featured in the 2007 movie Reign Over Me, about a severely post traumatically distressed Adam Sandler and his rekindling a friendship with old college roommate Don Cheadle. For movie featuring Adam Sandler it shows a huge amount of emotional depth and is actually quite a good film. This game is played by Adam Sandler's character a lot to distract him from life. Good to know Yahtzee thinks its actually a good one.
Erm Mr Yahtzee, everyone has an X chromosome.
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Just played Ico for the first time. Got to say that I felt pretty good after solving each puzzle.
you seem to often say good things about metroid prime. how about you do a review of metroid prime?
I saw an ad on this video for "The Center of Selfie Improvement"
what has this world come to
Honestly, I didn't think Shadow of the Colossus was amazing, but more OK. The controls were awkward, the landscape was built to look beautiful, but does not anymore, and while it is cool when games don't tell you what to do, it was necessary in this. Thankfully I still had the booklet. Although I also like SH3's atmosphere more than SH 2's, so what do I know?
Nothing
GamesinaBit hahaha
Shadow of the Colossus sits comfortably on the throne in gaming heaven for me. It doesn't even feel like a game, it's just one of my fondest memories/experiences and I can relive it whenever I want!
The impossible to control horse kind of ruined it for me, but I've yet to meet anyone else with that gripe.
Batman thats because you ride a car
Danmarinja The horse is like playing a guitar with oven mitts.
Danmarinja You tap left and he does a 90 degree turn. You tap X and it gallops faster for like a second, then he's like, "I'm gonna take a break now"
Danmarinja Except the horse is an ass who doesn't want to co-operate with you.
For some reason my fondest memory of this games is the realization that you can swing around on a giant's beard.
If this game ever gets an hd remaster i would probably eat it shit it out and then eat it again.
Actually, there IS a Shadow of the Colossus HD remaster. You can get a physical copy bundled with ICO HD for PS3, or get it on PSN for $20.
+RandomlyGeneratedUser you've just made my day
+RandomlyGeneratedUser To add to that the collection also has a better frame rate, and is in stereoscopic 3D (if you have a 3DTV,) which looks amazing!!!
"[...] But these are the small complaints of a tiny, irrelevant mouse clinging to the back of a roaring lion, with a jetpack."
The images only make this sentence even more awesome. AND accurate.
Oddly enough? I tolerloved it on the PlayStation 2. The newer PlayStation 3 port? It can die in a fire... everything is clunky and awkward...
Wha-.....
isn't it-
wai-
Hold on. Aren't they the same thing? I have it and It plays fine.
>_> I just didn't enjoy it? -shrug-
Dzko So, you liked the first game, but didn't enjoy an exact clone of it with better graphics?
I suppose so.
But, the "clone" of the game, for me at the very least did not feel the same. Either it being for a nostalgia factor or just how the overall game ran. It did -not- feel like the same game, and for some reasons it isn't for me.
It honestly felt clunky for me. Now, perhaps I am mistaken, and it is amazing and just don't know what a good game is, or perhaps somewhere along the lines the download became corrupted, for me? It just did not feel like the exact same game I plopped into the PlayStation 2.
Dzko Well it was the same. In every way.
So
yeah. It's just lost it's nostalgia factor on you. The clunky controls were probably there form the beginning. Unless thats not what you mean by cluinky. In which case I still have no idea what you're on about.
This is the best explanation of SOTC EVER!
Am I the only one who finds that the "E" in the escapist title screen seems like it's doing a Nazi salute?
Because I've taken to reflexively returning the salute.
"It's damn good damn damn good good damn good damn damn good"
Arguably the best back of the box blurb review one could hope for.
I can't be the only one who hates Team ICO
Congratulations, you aren't. No human being can hate Team ICO, so you aren't actually a person.
But their game are boring as shit.
Especially ICO
Why are they boring? Because they have many, deep emotional moments?
Malcolm Streitfeld They're boring because they lack substance. I'm all for artistry in games but having long drawn out walking segments and simple puzzles that barely break up the gameplay does not count as being artistic. It's more like Team ICO hit the deadline and said "We'll just say its supposed to be symbolic." Also the story in both games has been beaten done so many times prior so don't try to use that in your argument.
Bi$harp
You argue that it's a lack of substance, and that the long and drawn out segments are not really symbolic, but you can subjectively fucking argue anything.
It's gotta be a genuine challenge, picking apart one of the top 5 greatest pieces of art created by man.
Funny how the first game I see him compliment is a game I hate..... Oh wait I forgot, no one cares
TrueFriends HelpMoveBodies yeah, that stab could use more sound, especially on the final boss
This is probably the record-breaker for most metaphors in a Zero Punctuation video.
I have never played the game, but I understood him. Maybe it is just because I have seen all the episodes so I get the way he talks.
Sky Snow wait........you never played shadow of the colossus?
He's a critic, not a reviewer.
existenceisrelative
Sounds like a piss poor way to judge how to spend your fifty bucks.
kierany9
Now _that_ makes sense. He should really reconsider his video titles.
*****
Wouldn't be surprised.
Can't say that about Shadows of Colossal boredom.
wait, you are defending star-craft because "it challenges your brain"
yet you are using the fact that you cant beat the colossal because it too hard to figure out.
your agruement is incorrect because you are using the same reasons to prove to opposite points.
you are basically creating two of the same number except one is positive and the other one is negative
when you add it up just leave at zero, square one, you did nothing to prove a point other than being a hypocrite.
I am not trying to defend SoTC, however i am simply pointing out the flaws upon your statement
tarrker If you had to look up a walk through to work out how to beat the colossi...I don't think you should be trying to review the game.
Thank you for the welcome. I think I'll make myself at home and start a snow-shoveling business here.
This is absolutely my favourite review of his, and I adore this game.
I love this game so much. Its not for everyone, but if you can connect to it, my god is it an experience. There's truly nothing like it
This made me laugh so hard I was reduced to tears! Great review.
sometimes I come back to this video just to hear yahtzee properly praising a game
