    "You should have trained the dog! Didn't you see its head tilt and its ear flop? Just get good!"
    Oh, come off it, guys. There's no excuse for having a player be forced to progress in a game via some puzzle or platforming, only to be stuck because you didn't give your special ally enough belly rubs and ear scratches on the way.
    Saying a creature moves like an animal is one thing, but if I'm supposed to TREAT him as such, giving positive reinforcement in order to make him obedient, then the game should clue you in on something so important. If I were to hear the game's narration say something like, "In time the beast came to understand me," I would have figured that the game would just have him be more obedient over time due to story events bringing us together, NOT necessarily because I ruffled his feathers.
    Not everyone watches game developer interviews or reads strategy guides, so that "Team ICO told us it was a pet simulator!" defense is bullshit. The last thing a game designer should do is induce frustration and misplaced anger because the player didn't get lucky and find the info before he bought the game. I should be able to buy any game one year later and still have the same fun as a player on Day One of release, and find that fun ON MY OWN.

    • @ultimatekie
      @ultimatekie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Dan P Not really. It's just poor game design. If a major game mechanic isn't mentioned in game and can only be found out by reading dev interviews or getting lucky in the game that is lazy design. Introduce the mechanics in game so the players figure it out or barring that just tell them it's important. If you don't you severely limit the enjoyment of a lot of players.

    Trico reacting to commands and the like's also incosistent. In scripted scenes, he jumps around seemlessly, but outside of them, it needs to look at the pillar for 5 minutes before deciding to actually do something.
    Apparently, people defend this by saying it's an animal. Shouldn't it ALWAYS act like an animal, then?

      That's a mechanic that the devs didn't explain in which you have to actually train and treat the dogbirdrat well, and it becomes quicker to react to your commands, also it's more difficult for it to become distracted. Heck, in some moments he even does things before you even have to ask.
      Still, both the implementing of this mechanic and not telling the player about it were dumb moves. I was lucky that someone told me about it before I played the game, otherwise I probably would have hated it too.

    People, can you fucking STOP defending broken mechanics? It's fine to like the game, but stop calling broken mechanics intentional design. Do you realize you are defending and creating excuses for fucking BUGS?! If one player inputs a command and the dog does what he is supposed to, and the other player inputs the same command in the same exact spot and the dog does not even respond, this is NOT some fancy, realistic animal behavior meant to showcase its growth by the end. It's a fucking BUG!!! It's inconsistency. It's broken. Stop being fanboys. Love the parts that are great, and criticize the parts that are broken. Is it that hard?!

      Generally yeah, it's bloody impossible for most people to criticize any part of any particular game that they like. The very thought that it might not be the most perfect thing in the history of ever is blasphemy, or something.
      Though the "it's intentional AI" bit for THIS game is the dumbest I've seen in awhile. No game designer actually worth the chair they're sitting on would ever design AI that does that, for a loooooong list of reasons. No, this is a case of bad AI simply being bad AI. That's the era we live in: *proper* AI isnt really a thing yet, at all. So stuff like this happens alot.
      ....which makes me wonder why in the bloody hell they decided to make "Super Annoying Escort Mission: The Game" in the first place, which is pretty much what this is. It's like they listened to the complaints related to the AI in Ico and thought that it was extremely specific praise and that they should do more of that.

      Sorry but about "defending bugs" - in the past years it's become a trend to release games in a much worse state than The Last Guardian ever was and ever will be, for example Skyrim after it's initial release and even today it's completely normal for questlines to bug your game to death. That's pretty much worse than people having issues with Trico's AI because they're too impatient to wait for it to act on whatever command is given.

      @Zinlain 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If Fumito Ueda started immediately(emphasis on immediately given how long it took this one to came out) on a new game, maybe it will be more like SotC than TLG.
      Maybe with the massive things you hunt behave more like animals and roam around a vast area with a day and night cycle(some of them sleeping at night, others awake/stronger or something). Damaging the Colossus-substitute enough will make the creature go from Fight to Flight and immediately focus on shaking you off and bolting to somewhere else in its designated zone which you would then track by the foot prints it leaves and drips of blood it trails. Maybe even have a predator/prey mechanic where you can lead one Not!Colossus into the path of another that preys on it.
      Failing that, at least Prey For the Gods seems to be coming along, and it looks like it can scratch that SotC itch.

    I played through the game 2 times now. The first time, I was kind of dissappointed because of the controls (yes they are bad) and the fact that trico wouldn't listen half the time. But then I walked my dog (the day after i finished it) and I realized I might have approached the game in a wrong way. I heard that the AI took a long time to complete, so I figured it would be smart and know how and what to do. But they programmed it to act like an actual animal. And I started my playthrough with the mindset that I would try to experience the game as a journey betweem me and trico. I petted him more, took care to remove the bloodstains after every battle, found a lot more barrels and payed more attention to the scenery. And that made me love the game. Trico becomes more obedient if you feed him more barrels and spend more time with him. And there's this part between the middle and end of the game, where trico gets hurt. Badly. He can hardly move his head, and you need to find him barrels to make him better again. I found a few, and placed them in front of him. And he missed it about 7 times. In my first playthrough, that annoyed me (it was supposed to be a good AI, wasn't it?) but the second time, I realized what I had to do. One time, my dog got really sick and she could hardly move. I had to feed her manually by putting the food and drink in her mouth. So I did that with trico (stood in front of him with a barrel in my hands). And he ate it on the 2nd try. Same with the other barrels I found there. You need to treat him as an actual helpless animal that you care for, to understand the mechanics of the game. The AI wasn't fucking up, Trico was just to weak and we had to take care of him the way we would take care of a sick animal. He doesn't always listen either, just like an animal. But feed him and pet him more, and he'll start to listen 90% of the time. It also makes the ending that much more significant. It's easy to bash the game because of mechanics that you might just not get yet. (But as I said, the controls are pretty bad). If you like an eploration-driven game and have plenty of time to spend just exploring and caring for another being, than this game is for you. It's about the time you spend with him, and the AI will reflect that. Another point of criticism I frequently see is that the AI is inconsistent between cutscenes and gameplay. But isn't that because during gameplay, there's hardly a tense and timed moment (except battles)? In cutscenes, pillars fall down and bridges collaps. Trico will try to save itself and you as soon as possible, and will jump and leap much quicker than during gameplay. Maybe that's because there's actual danger? During much ot the game, it's exploration that's the most important part. And you need time to do that. So trico will be more relaxed as well and won't react in 0.0005 seconds. The last part is just my observations, but overal I would rate this game a good 8.5/10 (even with the bad controls)

    I finished the game a few days ago, and I loved it. I had become totally invested in the relationship between the unnamed boy and Trico, despite knowing the whole time that there was sure to be something at the end to destroy that relationship.
    The main issue people have with the game is the controls and the way you command Trico, and I understand that, but I didn't actually experience a lot of frustration while playing.
    Nerdcubed said in his video on The Last Guardian that it seemed that people who play a lot of video games didn't like the game, because they were trying to reach the goal rather than bond with Trico, explore the nest, etc. The trick is to be patient and understanding. You can't get Trico to do whatever the hell you want all the time not because the game is broken, but because Trico is like a real animal. Sometimes they will ignore you, sometimes walk in circles, sometimes do what you ask, sometimes they know what to do before you do. As soon as you figure that out the more enjoyment you get out of the game in my opinion.

    You guys do realize they built Aggro to feel like a real animal as well. Sometimes he took his sweet time to get the player or doesn't speed up as fast consistently.
    But there was one thing with Aggro, he was just one mechanic, you still had your own movement, your own climbing, your own weapon.
    Trico (or Torico depending on localization) is your main weapon, mode of transportation, and main climbing tool in many instances) Thats why the argument of "He's supposed to animal" doesnt hold up IMO

    Loved many, many things about this game, though even I'll admit the camera was damn wack and the kid's movement (tiptoe to OUTRIGHT SPRINT WITH NO IN-BETWEEN) really needed work.
    Didn't *actually* have that many problems with Trico. Just giving ONE command then waiting a bit did the trick in 98% of cases (I also had that experience of him jumping to the wrong platform twice). Spam-spam-spamming commands made Trico freeze up like Windows ME - the key is giving *isolated* commands and yes, having a bit of patience.
    Glad I played it though, quite an experience - Trico is generally amazing to watch and when the game is good, it's REALLY good.
    I was pondering last night how Yahtzee would portray Trico in the ZP style. Not disappointed, haha.

    Question.... do people get this angry at your pet? you may get frustrated when it doesn't listen to you while training it, but you grit your teeth and forget about it when it does something cute, fetches something for you, or purrs by your leg. When it finally gets it you praise it and you feel pride in yourself for finally getting it to do something and in it for learning something (regardless of its usefulness).
    I wont say the ai is perfect, but its supposed to represent the mentality of an animal, which I think is done pretty well. Of course it isn't going to listen to you 100% of the time. Its going to take time and effort for the creature to get what you are trying to get it to do and why it should do it.
    "But I don't care about that! Its a videogame and it should do everything I tell it to regardless of everything else," is, in my opinion, a perfectly valid argument for not liking the game.... but to me its more about what that interaction represents than what others want in its pacing.
    Now before you get your nickers in a twist, remember that what I'm saying is just an opinion... Everyone has one and no one's opinion is more valid than any other. All I'm trying to do is explain it.

My friend and I were taking turns on shareplay for each death, and sometimes it was so dumb the things that would lead to our inevitable death. One time, completely unrelated, I was jumping towards him while he was walking to the ledge and for some reason, instead of grabbing him, the boy got flung in the opposite direction like he had just jumped against a trampoline. As entertaining as that was, we could not reproduce it however.

    The reason he can be kinda wonky with commands is because his AI actually runs on a secret "trust bar" and that fueled by you taking care of him (wiping blood off, in ruffling feathers, feeding barrels, petting in general, riding his back more often, etc), and he actually becomes very dependable if you make sure to keep that up. If you put effort into actually being there for him, he'll put effort into being there for you, and there's nobody but you to blame if he won't listen.

      Jordan Hulett no. Trico is point blank and simple shitty ai. If your ai is programmed to not work a certain amount of time, and it doesn't work like 60% of the time. It's terrible. I've watched multiple let's plays where people have frustrated with him. It has nothing to do with being an animal person. Do you mean being patient and waiting an hour for him to walk through a fucking door? So people are forced to spam commands and then the ai freaks out and doesn't know what to do so then you command it again and then maybe half the time it works. It's just awful.

    • @GryphonSkull
      @GryphonSkull 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      the only footage I've seen of him not listening is when people repeatedly spammed the command, forcing him to stop and re-listen again and again and obviously that meant he didn't really do anything except to listen to the character yell comand after comand without him ever having the time to actually *act* and follow said commands
      also, as for him not listening being a bad choice; it's been explained that he listens less at the beginning and more later on, especially concerning how you interact with him. which is great and immersive - you hate the animal and only yell at it to do things, it won't like you and behave well. you take time to bond with it, it will be attentive and try to help you as much as it can (and you will have an easier time reading it).
      and regarding those cues - since I've now heard quite a few people say that it *did* give cues, I'm kind of forced to believe that the people who claim it doesn't simply don't see them/take the time to see them/don't even care about them anymore. after all, if enough people are able to work with the AI from the very same game, then it doesn't seem to be the AIs fault if others have problems with it.

      +2epic4uNubs That's actually not true, if Trico doesn't show ANY reaction at all, it's because it didn't even hear your command, so you gotta scold it or pet it to pay attention to you. If it tilts it's head, that means that it doesn't understand your command, so you should show him what you mean from a different position. If it whimpers, it means that it doesn't have enough space to obey, so you can make it reposition itself better.

    I'm am with Jim Sterling (formerly of the Escapist fame) that the monster following you is getting to much of a pass because his behavior is animalistic. Sure you can interpret it that way but this is a fantasy animal and one with a lot of intelligence apparently so regular rules should not be applied. Other than that the monster give no visual or verbal cues that distinguish between programmed disobedience or bad programming. And being the cynical fuck I am, I am prone to believe Team ICO shit all over its controls just like they shit over the boy's.
    Even if I am wrong and the behavior is intentional that does not make it better. That is just artificial difficulty by screwing with the player. If the puzzle calls for the monster to catch you then you should be caught 100% of the time if you have completed the puzzle correctly. The randomness is detrimental to the game which this has to be ultimately has to be scored as. As art it is beautiful, as a game the mechanics and AI are late PS2 and leave A LOT to be deserved.

    So, the problem with the portrayal of Trico, the wild animal, was that he behaved like a wild animal.....
    It's a little frustrating, but it is still a good game.
    That said.
    When you hear of some games that were finally released after years in development hell, you hear how they were made and remade through different hardware cycles, Duke 4eva 4 example.
    But The Last Guardian feels like every bit of that early PS3 game is in there, in the code, somewhere, and the lingering fingerprints of all too few people who worked on it remain, meaning that things like the camera feel like something from 2005.
    But it does, at least, not feel like it is constantly handholding you throughout.
    Play an Arkham game or Uncharted the murder simulator and, for much of the action you are barely controlling the character onscreen, at least in The Last Guardian that fuckup filter is switched off and as you climb a ledge or swing on a rope you have control and it needs skill to complete some tasks, so that is a startlingly good thing, at least in my opinion.

    I both agree and disagree with most of the comments. I'm one of the few that loved the game and saw Trico's actions as beautifully crafted realism. No it wasn't quick by any means, but most times he'd be examining the situation and thinking on what it should do.
    HOWEVER. I am not denying there weren't any bugs. But there are oversights to those who are impatient and wanted an experience from this game they were never going to get. The camera is just bad and awful. The jumping mechanics as well. Two important things that were very broken. I played through the game 3 times, each time got progressively quicker as I learned 90% of the time Trico was directly not listening to me its because I was doing the wrong thing. It was very rare he'd just not listen and walk off when I was aiming him in the direction he needed to go.
    Trico's mechanics felt like a natural progression of starting out with a stranger, growing trust and slowly solving puzzles on his own and him figuring out where to go. Once again

    The only time he didn't follow a command quickly and accurately was while climbing a circular tower, and I wasn't pointing at the right spot. Took me three minutes to get him to jump. I didn't shit my pants over it or quit. People either have no patience, or no damn clue what buttons they're actually pressing.

    I think this game and Firewatch were two innovative games that pushed the envelope of modern gaming, and are largely misunderstood for it. They were games that wanted to be an 'interactive fantasy', and were titles that never had a chance at satisfying gamers that wanted a "It does what you want it to" game that is all about you. Firewatch and Last Guardian were perhaps, created by creators who had too much of an idea of what they wanted to make. They beautifully delivered what the creator imagined but they were games that unapologetically refused to be what gamers expect games to be about.

      From my experience, there's players who get their kick strictly out of solid, tight gameplay and then there's those who get a lot out of storytelling and atmosphere and whatnot (and everything in between, I suppose). A game that sits firmly at one end of the spectrum (or close to it, anyway) is gonna get a lot of hate from one camp and nothing but love from the other.
      If you're the kind of guy who likes to play Counterstrike or DOTA for six hours straight, it's probably not a game you'll enjoy.

    I got frustrated sometimes, but I eventually made a system for dealing with stuff: wait for Trico to twitch his glowy-eyed head before tossing barrels, try to only yell commands when we're looking in the same direction, basically just yell "jump" if Trico isn't doing anything and he'll usually figure it out himself, don't yell commands when he's already jumping up series of platforms or he'll get confused/start jumping down, stay on his back/neck and not his leg/head for less of a chance of being bucked off, and immediately jump onto Trico's back when soldiers show up (when possible).

    As frustrating as the dog,bird,goat is. I can't say they did wrong. It really does act like an animal. If it did telepathically know exactly what you wanted and performed every action flawlessly, you'd be bitch in about how no moose,cow,cat thing should be that overly responsive. Yes, it's frustrating, but that's part of the game in my opinion. Glitches on the other hand are a different story.

It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes just to get somewhere just because a fictional animal decided not to help you, realistic or not.

      There's a fine line between immersion and enjoyment. If it's too challenging, the player becomes frustrated, and if it's too simple, the player becomes bored. It sounds like this game missed that sweetspot between challenge and simplicity that we call "flow", which is where games are most fun.

    • @Unf0rget
      @Unf0rget 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've beaten the game and this happened in just two places where I've seen others get through just fine. 1-3 button presses got the action I needed on every other puzzle. Only one of the numerous chain jumping segments did I have trico backtrack when I asked it to jump forward. For trico it really is a lack of patience from the general audience being blown out of proportion by overreacting video's like dunky. I see his video mentioned in every stream.
      On a whole I found the controls of the boy to be more annoying and ruining intense moments. Difficulties going from trico's limp to his side when he's curled up or sitting. He slides past switches every other time and I found his diving controls to be very slow.
      If it ever gets polished and fixed to a smooth experience then it's can be accepted as a good game. As it is now what it's got to offer is besmirched by the few slights in the controls and public opinion.

    Oh come now, Yahtzee, Trico actually did respond consistently. The only thing he didn't do all the time on my first playthrough was successfully catch a barrel early in the game, and even that ramped up to a 95% chance later on. Figuring out what he responds to, how he responds to it, and the value of praising his successful actions is all an element of the game. This isn't even pretending a bug is a feature. The game has always been advertised as a partial pet simulator, and Trico's every action falls under that category.
    Hell, I would've been disappointed if he did catch barrels every time. The successes wouldn't have been satisfying at the end of the day.

  • @TheSestren
    @TheSestren 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I dunno if I just lucked out or the game was patched or something, but I didn't have any of these frustrations really. Trico did what I commanded him to pretty much every time, and I think the only frustration I had was the speed at which he does it - sometimes he is a bit slow to respond, but otherwise he will do what you tell him to. I find it's best to only ride Trico and command him when you MUST - i.e. you can only progress with him taking flying leaps to new ledges. If you want him to walk to the next room or turn around etc, best to just get off and walk there yourself and he will follow. He never missed catching me either, so again, dunno if I was just lucky or what...
    I find a lot of reviews harp on about the "frustration" so I find that really unfortunate and a bit annoying actually, because that's not my experience at all. Oh well.
    Edit: I agree about the barrel thing though, it was a bit hit and miss on whether he caught them. I found it helped (or maybe it was just a coincidence?) to hold the throw button rather than just tap it when you want him to catch it.

    The cutout glued together is hilarious, but I'm pretty sure the Master of the Valley is The Last Guardian, however your complaints and the general complaints by most are just shitty. You didn't wait for him to acknowledge the barrel before tossing it, so he misses it, I too randomly throw things at my dog's head while he's turned away and expect fucking what? A Terminator-like snap reaction followed by DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN? I too jump from a fucking ledge expecting to be caught by unprepared people/cat-dog-birds, I too can't fucking tilt the camera DOWN while pointing where to go in my vain attempt to direct someone where to dive.
    Here's the problem, people are playing it like a game, and it's a lot closer to real than it should be, and real is telling your dog where to go and your dog guessing because it doesn't speak English, and if you don't point in the right direction it looks at you like "the fuck?" and when you chuck food at it with no warning it gets hit in the face(see hilarious youtube montages, all five billion of them) and even gets hit in the face when you do give it warning(see hilarious youtube montages, all five billion of them).
    I never had these dumb problems, it's not Call of Duty, expecting slick, mechanical reactions and game systems from this is really like expecting Gone Home to have gameplay(or anything worth the time), it's really the wrong approach.

    I can really understand why people get so frustrated with Trico. I completely understand, I yelled a few times. But, looking back, I see that the reason why why Trico wouldn't follow my instructions was because it was the wrong path to follow. If you pay attention to Trico's behavior, there are certain animations she/he initiates when you input the right command. If you are patient and wait a little bit and don't spam command inputs, its pretty clear when you've made the right decision. Trico can be just as confused as you are. You are the pilot. You expect Trico to have all of the answers? The big thing for me is that; aside from platforms with glowing characters; puzzles are incredibly nonspecific and offer little to no hints. Sometimes framing is a key factor, but a lot of the time puzzles are trial and error. In my first playthrough, I thought that grass was a key guide for platform puzzles. After a little while I realized that, well, grass is everywhere, as it should be. The game and its puzzles felt very "natural," oh, and I guess Trico too (very natural). Also there were a lot of mechanics that were lightly hinted at and used maybe once or twice. A big one for me was being able to drag Trico's tail. There is one instance I can recall that being a relevant tactic, and not once did the game run the player through a tutorial. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, certainly frustrating, but also incredibly intuitive and open. You have to experiment and explore. It's so very ironic seeing as this is a linear game, yet it still holds so much freedom and mystery. The Last Guardian asks a lot of questions. Is frustration the result of bad game design? Or a key factor at times? How much or how little can you give a player, in terms of hints, before a game becomes too easy or too difficult?
    I am most certainly biased though, I knew I would love this game from the very beginning. The concept alone was enough to keep me enticed for a whole decade. I must remind people that games are an art form. Art is interpretive. There is nothing wrong in hating or loving a game, and both are good responses.
