In other words, you can have everything set up and set at the focus you want, but it will refocus too far away to work for what I want. I think I'm a firmware version behind, so maybe this has been fixed since, but I expect my use case is pretty niche, so I don't expect it is.
@@joojoojeejee6058 Is there a compact stabilizer with a 4th axis on the market? Surely they'd add a 4th axis, if it made sense. I think the compromise here is a one-handed extremely portable point-and-shoot option. If you want a 4th axis, it seems there's a bunch of two handed monstrosities that, I'm sure, blow this guy out of the water on quality.
@Zero Cool Yeah I don't know whether or not 4th axis is feasible, but electronic vertical stabilization might be. The newest GoPro does a pretty good job in this regard?
@@onemanshow4116 There is a 3D-printed vertical stabilizer available for Osmo Pocket. It's compact in a sense that it's still smaller and lighter than a mirrorless system but it's hardly pocketable anymore.
Thank you so much for demonstrating the camera's menu and options! I picked one of these up yesterday from my local Costco (they had a deal: the camera + the expansion kit for $430 CAD) and could not for the life of me figure out how to operate the menu. Thanks to you I was able to configure the camera to my liking, and hopefully I will be able to create some great videos with it!
The solution to all the problems you mentioned is a Removu K1. Everything you mentioned that came out as an upgrade or plug-in option is out-of-the-box on the K1. It even has an optical zoom and removable batteries. Wifi, mic input, wider angle lens and a joystick to pan and tilt is built in.
Thanks for this review! My experience is that the novelty of switchable accessories wears off really quickly. Who has the patience to constantly change accessories to get basic functionality from a camera anymore? Iphone. Gimbal. done!
True, any modern smartphone and gimbal would be more practical, and probably higher quality too. Samsung S9 has a pretty great adjustable depth of field. This device shoots a depth of field that keeps almost everything is in focus, regardless of the focal point. Its really distracting but makes it easy to shoot public events and scenery.
blacknester A pixel is not half the price of an iPhone! Are you insane?? This comment section is stupid. This product may not be perfect, but it’s pretty damn good and at a very low price, and there’s nothing like it on the market. So calm the fuck down.
I'd want the thumb wheel to still work and have an adapter on the end for your phone too! That wheel would still be smoother than using pinch n zoom on your screen!
The only accessory you need to get good results in this camera is a ND filter and this does not affect portability at all. Of course a device this size will get some compromises, but it does have a great sensor and horizontal stabilization is fenomenal in most cases. It also have d-cine like profile for color grading and boots in 4 seconds. It’s like reviewing a Mini Disc player and complaining about the absence of LP support. You can use this as it is and get really good cinematic results if you are willing to adapt in exchange of portability. It’s the kind of product you just get if you know well all the options in the same niche (and know how awkward and slow to start they are).
I think we've had similar experiences with this, I got mine in Jan and was disappointed, I finally got the expansion kit and it turned up broken.I sent it to them and it came back smashed to pieces thanks to UPS. finally after updates and getting extra parts I'm quite happy with it. Also exposing dark is a good feature as you don't clip the sky and can have an image with a greater range.
That's what I thought, it looks like a pretty fun device but there's bound to be a future version with most of the "accessories" included in the device. Might as well just wait for that one
Rushing it out in time to make it under the Xmas tree most likely. It's the best time of year to get people with too much money and a tight rein on the purse to spend a bit too much money for the latest thing.
Over the last 40 years or so, using the consumer as Beta tester has worked splendidly for Microsoft when releasing new versions of its software. After all, it's a great way to use 50 thousand people to actually *pay* for the privilege of debugging their stuff. Very smart, Bill
Thank you so much for this update, I pre ordered it from DJI, but after the first early reviews I cancelled my order, and decided my Hero 7 would suffice. I am blown away that all the bad points about it have now been resolved, mine comes on Tuesday , and I have already ordered a clip that goes on the bottom, that makes it perfectly flat and has a tripod mount underneath, so I can use all my GP mounts too, £11 amazon :-)

It seems when they designed this they had to keep adding options Everytime they thought of something it should have on it. Maybe they should make a version mk2 or mk3 and have these things added onto it. If people worry about it becoming too big, I guess they could keep it small if it just had a digital camera lens and nothing else. I will never buy one of these version 1 models. Great review though. This was my 2nd time watching it, I came back for some info. Thank you.
One of the best reviews on YT. As usual. Thanks for sharing. Would be interested to know how many viewers watched the full vid. Great concept splitting it and tone is good in the last section. Down playing that last bit is a good idea for sure... dont want everyone to know all that cool stuff ;) :0) Would be interested in an update vid and if you use this device regularly and what settings. Looks like you have decent frame rates dialled in. Lots of longevity in this video wise. DJI will no doubt be updating stuff and aftermarket gear will be coming out for years to come! Good luck :)
Was thinking the same thing. The horizon and corners were the smoothest I had seen in the entire video. Course he was bouncing up and down (but that is how he walks, each step he probably goes up and down 2 to 3 inches or so and when the camera is locked on the horizon the effect makes him look like a FPS game. But from a gimbal standpoint it was dead on with the horizon IMHO)
My issues are - Pump Focusing, You still get Bounce when walking and face tracking and object track is poor. My Sony action cam as well as my Sony HandyCams seem to do a much better jobe in all respects. Only issue with the SONYs, it is up to me to hold the horizontal/horizon on a shot. The Osmo is also to heave to be hangin and walking around with it on a selfie stick for any amount of time.
I wish people would stop complaining about the "narrow" field of view! This is meant to be a cinematic camera, NOT a GoPro! Most films are shot with 35-50mm lenses... this is a 26mm equivalent, which is actually quite wide! I'm GLAD they didn't go wider, as it would make the camera look like a GoPro... I already HAVE a GoPro with great stabilization... I DON'T need another one!
Hey Techmoan, I appreciate the reviews a few months into owning a product, it means you've taken the time required to live with something for a while before you comment on it. To me, this means that your reviews are more useful as you will generally discover the really, little annoying to live with things about a product. Keep doing what you do.
16:30 - Turn the thing around. I leave the connector thing on mine all the time but I turn it around. If you take the plug thing off and flip it around, it won't stick out of the case anymore. I think using this thing for what it's good at is very important. It does do some stuff very well...I really love the moving timelapse feature, for instance...but it's definitely not a jack of all trades. It's a tool, though...a very useful tool. I quite like mine. Handy little thing.
That’s a great idea. Giving the item 4-6 months so updates can take place and get the full review nvm the views at first but when people learn you’re doing genuine reviews and giving it time to find its stride the views will definitely come.
I don't get why panorama modes are still a selling point. If you do panoramas with camera built-in modes it's usually always disappointing for one reason or other. I always use Hugin, which is a free desktop software package, and which has plenty of bells and whistles for finetuning the results - not significantly more difficult to use, either.
I think you'd have to be really picky to not like this camera...the video looks amazing, the controls are cool, the features are unique and the price is fair.
I have an Osmo Pocket and in reference to the car clip at 15 minutes in, I've mounted mine to my dogs and it was perfectly stable, while singing side to side on their harnesses. I know its not a car, but I am interested to see if it will vibrate the way you had it because I've also used it on rides at amusement parks and didn't have any of those vibration issues either. Though I was holding the camera too. Personally, I don't think I would mount it on anything as I would be too afraid of breaking the gimble by absentmindedly moving around.
I'M BACK, and you're the best, worth the wait. Not sure what or who this is for, a walking vlogger? This cam is confusing and too ''fiddly'' as you'd say. I'll stick to my GoPro's. I know you're not a fan, but they work where water is concerned thats for sure. WISH, I could just find a outstanding spy style camera, versus all the junk to vlog with.
I've been looking for something EXACTLY like this! I like the narrower field of view when compared to a GoPro or such, no fisheye effect. I would like for it to clip into my "pocket" for shooting vid while I walk around without drawing too much attention.
Man oh man, am I only one who enjoys this camera? I think it's a good challenge to try and work within your limitations sometimes. It makes you think about what you can/can't do. I've really enjoyed it so far. I'm currently trying to sell stock footage made with it while working on my own family stuff. I think I would be worse off if I was given the perfect machine right off of the bat. This is just my opinion though
With any new tech, it's advised to wait 3-6 months to purchase it. Reason being is that regardless of how much beta testing is done prior to launch, you'll never work out all the bugs. I have a different approach to software as it's easier to sort out bugs.
Regarding the distance, it feels like it's designed for vlogging. Vlogger in focus with the area they're in very much a background element that isn't supposed to be paid attention to unless they turn the camera to it.
Good review, Matt. Kept thinking they came to market a little early, seeing how they keep updating the firmware and adding to the accessories. It's a great concept, but needed further development before it's market release.
GoPro did something similar with USB to 3.5mm adapters. As it turned out the adapter just had a resistor inside it to tell the camera what it is. I needed a low profile adapter and didn’t feel like paying the high premium GoPro was asking for theirs. So I made my own adapter with the right resistor and a L-shaped USB plug going to a wire with the 3.5mm plug on it. I imagine this camera is similar. It might even be possible make an adaptor yourself.
Thank you so much for the review. It was pretty clear the camera hunting for focus was a source of issue for you. If you can stop the aperture right down say f8, this will give you a much greater focus plane and reduce the focus hunting. Also if you have a wide lens 24mm or wider will also help as wide lens tend to 'get everything in focus'. I hope this helps!
Interesting review. I waited for a while before I bought mine as it allowed more accessories to become available. The control wheel is very good and it also gives you a fast mode change which is handy. I got a Ulanzi base for it so it had a tripod mount and could be charged from either side of the base. No problems getting ND and ND+circular polarising filters. Finding my way around the settings took a while but once you get it, you can do more things with it. The 80 degree view angle very well suits what I used it for, I normally use a Sony FDR AX700 for general purpose video but the are locations and places where its too big or inconvenient to use and it here where the Osmo Pocket fill a very useful gap for me that action cameras did not. The video quality is good enough to mix and match with the AX700 footage and can be processed with much the same post methods. As far as the carry case, I found one on eBay that is designed to have the control wheel fitted and it makes the cameras robust and convenient to carry around in a pocket or carry bag.
DJI have a flagship store here in Taipei. When checking the Taiwan store located at Syntrend as I have one of their drones. This model is not available from their store only through their website as it is considered an old model.
The product looks like a company making nice drones with a stabilized camera suddenly got the idear to only sell a stabilized camera and needed it to be out for Christmas. The very high price for extremely basic fgunctionality, like a tripod mount, is not the worst. It is that they have to be added or removed and you cannot use many things together. There are several similar products out there, some with a camera built in and some for mounting an action cam or phone, which are much better designed. Thank you for a proper review. I have bought several products based on watching many reviews, that all failed to list basic design flaws.
@Techmoan I see quite heavy compression artifacts between 14:05 and 14:10, in those bushes. Also around the necks of the alpaca's at 8:30-8:34; you can see that the fluffiness of the wool confuses he compression algorithm! :-) Is that something that youtube does to the original footage, or is that something the camera does?
One of the best reviews, It covers everything that I wanted to know about the DJI Pocket, Thanks for the time and effort. PS: You have wonderful voice.
I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with such an extended going through of the menu options. That is *critical* for consumer devices like this that so often have confusing setups, poorly thought out menus or missing obvious and very necessary features, so thank you for that. One thing that I wish you included was if it correctly makes seamless file breaks so there is no gap in the video or audio tracks when you bring them into an editor. Many cameras seem to do this for some reason and there is frankly no excuse for it. Also, does this really require a smart phone to setup (mandatory acceptance of whatever permissions DJI wants) *and* an account at DJI? If that's the case they can fuck right off.
yes for the initial warranty registration then you never to have to connect a phone again that talks to DJi. Why so worried Apple and Google track you already moron
Tbh I don't that the settings walkthrough is boring. Ironically it's the one thing I especially like in your videos and sets them apart from other tech reviewers on whom I have extremely mixed opinions, is that I get to know how the heck the discussed device works and how would I change the settings if I ever would want to get the device for myself. I really think it BREAKS the flow if you put it in the end, but I can understand it in the case of the DJI Osmo Pocket being that it would break the flow of the video. Though I REALLY hope that doesn't become a recurring part of the channel, having the Multipurpose part of the video put on the end of it.
What is happening at 5:22? The gate in the foreground and bits of the windows on the building in the background are in focus, while the rest of the building (including windows) is out of focus. It almost looks like software-generated fake bokeh.
The alpaca seems to come with its own gimbal for its head! 🦙 Thanks for the review on this camera. I’ve just started looking at this camera and was hoping you had a review because you’re less hype and far more trustworthy.
These days you’re lucky if the first firmware release allows you to upgrade to the next version (for you it seemed it almost didn’t), let alone does anything useful! Edit: Does the usb mic perhaps require a firmware update to support it? Therefore why, when you tested, a generic one didn’t work? Some chance I suppose at those prices, but it could be the case. Yep, designed to make you buy the accessories. Perhaps it’s called the pocket, not because you can put it in a pocket, but instead because it will leave a hole in them?
Ok, what about osmo pocket’s mic adapter? Not only DJI charges you a premium for what is a cheap piece of plastic and makes it impossible to use a third party equivalent adapter but, at least outside of the USA this item is impossible to find. I even managed to buy it from a local reseller, I am in the UK, to be told the day before delivery (a good three weeks after I ordered it) that it was out of stock and would not be back in stock for another month at least. Furthermore, two-three days later, I received a stock reminder by DJI (as I had registered with their service before finding out that a UK reseller had one in stock) that the item was back in stock. Nevertheless, when I tried to buy it from their store (I received the reminder at 11.30pm and I saw the email only two hours later when I tried to buy it from their online store) I could not buy it and customer service told me that it was out of stock and tried to convince me to buy it from an American resellers for close to double its price (plus possible import tax by UK customs).
I quite like the field of view having owned it for a few weeks, but then I'm not likely to use it as a vlogging camera. Exactly as it says on the tin, tech and moan, with even a sprinkling of positivity and useful feedback points - listen up DJI. One thing that most reviews don't mention is the annoying beep when you press record and stop, although a DJI forum says it will address this issue in the next firmware update.

@@onemanshow4116
There is a 3D-printed vertical stabilizer available for Osmo Pocket.
So calm the fuck down.
blacknester What? I can buy XS Max (even more expensive than normal XS) for around 1000$
It’s the kind of product you just get if you know well all the options in the same niche (and know how awkward and slow to start they are).
yeah strange how 50 other reviewers get excellent footage from it but this ancient tech dude can't. Says a lot about his knowledge level.
Looks like another manufacturer simply using the public as beta testers ready for the proper version in 12 months time.
That's what I thought, it looks like a pretty fun device but there's bound to be a future version with most of the "accessories" included in the device. Might as well just wait for that one
And get some money while they are at it :).
Very true, don't want one anyways :-)
Thank you so much for this update, I pre ordered it from DJI, but after the first early reviews I cancelled my order, and decided my Hero 7 would suffice. I am blown away that all the bad points about it have now been resolved, mine comes on Tuesday , and I have already ordered a clip that goes on the bottom, that makes it perfectly flat and has a tripod mount underneath, so I can use all my GP mounts too, £11 amazon :-)
New to your channel and already consumed a fair amount. I hope that the producers of channel 5 The Gadget Show are watching, you would fit in there better than the current shower of presenters, all coming at it from a “youthful” angle ( your a bit like the older dude on there (John???). I prefer your sense of humour though and direct style. Well done and thankyou, oh and you’ve got a cool name ! Matt
Finally, a honest and non-biased review. You're the best!
every video that i watch makes me want this, but also makes me realise that two years after release, i have to wait for v2 which must be close
Cheers Matt. I am looking for one of these type of cameras, and I love your thoughts on it.
It seems like the point of this product is to sell accessories, also the jank is giving me a kickstarter vibe.
Thank you.
Techmoan: a pan is a left to right (or vice versa) camera movement. Up and down is a tilt. I know you will want to know this! Great video as usual.
Thank you for waiting to post this review. I appreciate your thoughtful content production.
DJI pocket 2 has fixed most of these concerns.
Actually when you walked with the selfie stick from 11:52, the background didn't look shakey at all. It all looked very smooth in my opinion.
This seems to be a kludgy camera and then you have to carry around even more kludge to make it just modestly functional.
I love when my function is modest. Hate when my functions are too braggy or promiscuous
Thanks for a great review. You just saved me £350 by sticking with my original Osmo, which after all the add ons is probably not that much bigger
Can I suggest a review of a stabiliser gimbal for cell phones.?
He has already done one if those. The Uoplay Gimbal
Hey Techmoan,
I appreciate the reviews a few months into owning a product, it means you've taken the time required to live with something for a while before you comment on it.
Well, my brain is now butter. The footage at the start was like a video game with head-bob turned on with how smooth it was!
Wonder what happens when the battery dies, are they replaceable?
Your videos satisfy my tech curiosity at no expense to myself. I highly enjoy them.
For the charging case the smartphone adapters are underneath the Osmo and on the side there is space for 2 SD cards
WORLDS COLLIDED FOR ME WITH THIS ONE. I ALSO WATCH A FEW NARROWBOAT TH-camRS AND HERE IS MY TECH GUY HAVING VIDS OF THE CANALS.
The video stabilization looks like a First person videogame camera
Fallout 4 lol
Lol that's what I was gonna say. I kinda want one now for clay shooting videos for just that reason.
Should have a setting to 'turn off bobbing' 🤔
I think you'd have to be really picky to not like this camera...the video looks amazing, the controls are cool, the features are unique and the price is fair.
Wait you have to register it? What happens when the servers go offline? Can you still use this if you get it second hand from someone
I clicked for the camera, but stayed for the llamas.
I''ll watch any video with a llama in the thumbnail.
It is an alpaca - we have twenty-one of them. :)
@@NintendoDude888 they are pretty hardy and easy to look after - keep them fed and watered well

Smoothest alpaca footage I've ever seen.
I love my osmo pocket, I have two kids and I wanted to just have a camera in my pocket to record my kids on vacations. It works great.
If anything, a great advert for Liverpool! I want to go!
AuntieFan - The river Mersey runs through Liverpool, if it went any slower it’d get mugged.
Your review was just fine! despite being out of focus a few times, you did great! Thank you for posting.
The shot of you moving around with the background perfectly still looks very uncanny. Looks like you were an automaton from a horror movie.
might i suggest taking the photos from the panorama and importing them into Autopano giga
I've been looking for something EXACTLY like this! I like the narrower field of view when compared to a GoPro or such, no fisheye effect. I would like for it to clip into my "pocket" for shooting vid while I walk around without drawing too much attention.
I like my Osmo Pocket - I didn't see an advantage worth upgrading to the Pocket 2. Good show!
Case is now updated and it fits the wireless module and bracket also the osmo pocket case bought one this week so all in one box
Hello, I just wanted to say you're greatly appreciated by us. Keep on keeping on!
PS: love your muppets!
It might even be possible make an adaptor yourself.
buy the $9.00 adapter on eBay hell it comes with a cheap Sony made stereo mic also
Decent review and yeah it is only a pocket cam afterall
Glad to see with the latest firmware update out yesterday you can turn off the annoying audio bleep also has improved focusing.
Great review very professional and honest 🖒 would love to see u can review insta360. GoPro 8 9 lols i already know with small sensor
@Techmoan I see quite heavy compression artifacts between 14:05 and 14:10, in those bushes.
Also around the necks of the alpaca's at 8:30-8:34; you can see that the fluffiness of the wool confuses he compression algorithm! :-)
Is that something that youtube does to the original footage, or is that something the camera does?
Apart from the wind noise, that mic is actually pretty good. This thing is rather impressive to me , considering the size.
The alpaca seems to come with its own gimbal for its head! 🦙 Thanks for the review on this camera. I’ve just started looking at this camera and was hoping you had a review because you’re less hype and far more trustworthy.
First five minutes told me to watch complete video. THANKS FOR SUCH WONDERFUL INFO.. I'm in love with my osmo pocket again..
I own both, but the problem with an action can you get a sort of fisheye effect which looks a bit amateur.
Actually, around the 12:00 point, the background is quite stable to my eyes while the operator seems to exhibit vertical motion.
12.04 - Looks like the Peak Forest canal?
I quite like the field of view having owned it for a few weeks, but then I'm not likely to use it as a vlogging camera. Exactly as it says on the tin, tech and moan, with even a sprinkling of positivity and useful feedback points - listen up DJI. One thing that most reviews don't mention is the annoying beep when you press record and stop, although a DJI forum says it will address this issue in the next firmware update.
