Watched this to get away from studying for my exam on kidney physiology (spoiler: Osmosis is heavily featured).
I always believed that the giant squid was put in the lake by the Hogwarts Founders and was enchanted by them to help protect the school. Kinda like a guard dog in the water.

The geography around the castle, the lake, I mean, did they discuss it in the books?
The Black Lake could have been a part of the ocean which is closed off by a geographic event - volcanic eruption, earthquake, etc - then sealed off any saltwater creatures still in the area. Over time, as the fresh water rivers or the freshwater rain came in, the salinity of the lake decreased, thus the usual ocean creatures in it adapted to the slowly-changing-to-freshwater lake.
Examples of lakes like this would be Lake Ontario and Lake Taal. In fact, only Lake Taal had freshwater species of sharks until they were hunted down to extinction in 1930.

I don't think the books do, apart from it being mountainous, but we do know it's in Scotland, which hasn't seen any geological activity that intense in tens of millions of years. There are saltwater lochs in Scotland, but only very close to the coast. The inland ones, like the black lake, were mostly formed by glaciers.
Or else it was transported there to protect it from being hunted by muggles. Hagrid probably feeds it or something.

Actually, when you mentioned that the squid pulls the boats, I remembered a story we have from one of our own freshwater lakes here in Norway. It is said that there is a giant nøkk (shapeshifting waterbeast) what can turn itself into a serpent or a troll in the lake, and that it can pull a boat along if it finds the rider worthy. Without sails or a propeller. Now I want to make the guy from the tale into a wizard befuddling the minds of the muggles watching in awe.

Another (I think more likely) explanation is that the lake actually connects to the ocean just through an underground cave. This would mean the lake is actually a saltwater lake meaning the squid can survive there and that it provides a way for the squid to end up in the lake in the first place.
But what about the pressure? It is still far too shallow to support the weight distribution of a giant squid.

Loch Ness Kelpie to be specific. Ever since reading "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" as a kid, I've always assumed that the Giant Squid in the lake was just a kelpie.

I seem to recall in the 4th book the merfolk had art depicting them fighting the giant squid. Dumbledore spoke the Met-language and the merfolk respected him. There was the old man who was interviewed by Rita Skeeter for Dumbledore's obituary in book 6 who's life's work was based around underwater magical studies and was close buddies with Dumbledore. Perhaps the squid isn't the species Giant Squid but just a kind of magical squid that are able to grow to giant size and are magical. The giant squid uses tentacles to move so how does it move when it uses all of its tentacles to pull the boats?
Actually, squids and octopus don’t use their tentacles to move through water like we use our arms, they do help them stabilize and maybe move quicker, but squids have fins on the the side of their bodies that help them move. BUT the squid is probably so large, it actually doesn’t have to move through the water, he probably just floats there and moves his arms and tentacles lol.

The math part doesn't quite work out considering there are not always 40 students in each year (especially harrys year is quite small because of the decreased birth rate due to voldemort reducing the amount of wizards) but the lake having a connection to somewhere else is a very nice explanation!

One reason is because Dumbledore liked to use them as a means of transportation, and they also were just wild in the forbidden forest. Hagrid also used them in a care of magical creatures class. I wonder if he showed the older students the giant squid but we didn't get to see it since our three heroes didn't finish graduating from Hogwarts (except for Hermione she went back lol)

I think the squid does help the first years get over the lake because when Dennis Creevey fell into the lake he was saved by....something. That something he assumed was the giant squid. So it obviously watches the first years, and is close enough to interact with them.
HEYY! I have a big theory on what Newt Scamander’s patronus is that I’m really excited about! Keep reading to the end if your interested! It makes sense for his patronus to be a porcupine, if you assume it has a connection to Tina, like stated in your video (posted like 2 years ago), but in the screenplay, crimes of Grindelwald, he says, “ She has eyes just like a salamander.” So it could be either. I’m not entirely convinced it’s even to do with Tina, though because neither of those would be spoilers like JK Rowling says it will be. It’s obvious to everyone that he and Tina have a strong, romantic relationship from the beginning, and we know it at least had to change from something else, because for most of his life he didn’t know her. I think it will be a subtle hint to his past, where he has hidden secrets and regrets. His biggest one is probably the reason he was expelled from Hogwarts: he took credit for the endangerment of a student’s life that leta lestrange actually caused. I think this blame has stayed with him, not only because it got him kicked out of the school in which he loved (he says it’s the best in the world in fantastic beasts), but also because afterwards he and leta drifted apart. She was one of the only humans he enjoyed the company of besides Tina. So I think his patronus is her’s, which I believe to be a raven. Her’s is most likely a raven because of her biggest secret: she killed Corvus lestrange (jr). Corvus in Latin is raven. Furthermore, newt and leta first met in a cabinet where leta was hiding from bullies and he was nursing a RAVEN. This would be a spoiler because it means he is still nursing feelings for her, and could put a strain on Tina and his relationship with her, if ever she were to ever find out. And even his brother, of which things already aren’t great, could be affected. This could potentially lead to other, more drastic things then a ruined love affair, which I also think is important. That’s is why I believe newt scamander’s patronus to be a raven!! I have also posted this theory in the comments of the original newt patronus video on this channel! Hoped you liked it!!
What if the squid is a ‘mascot’ for one of the houses, similar to the basilisk. I’m not sure why but octopuses may be seen as smart so it could be ravenclaw-ian or if the squid really does push the boats, then it could be hufflepuff as it is kind and supportive

I always thought the giant squid was an homage to the giant squid in the lake outside the doors to Moria in Lord of the Rings
there's a *theory* about Loch Ness saying that it's a wormhole to another dimension/other dimensions, which is why Nessie sightings are rare (because she keeps going through it), so the idea that the lake is a portal to other waterways is acceptable to me
I wonder if the Giant Squid is a Kelpie. Kelpies are aquatic horse-like creatures that have the ability to shapeshift into anything and can be rendered harmless and docile if a bridle is placed on their head. Kelpies have been seen in the Black Lake in other Wizardry installments, as seen in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, and we know of the largest Kelpie ever seen, the Loch Ness Monster, which can't be too different in size to a Giant Squid.
Since hagrid stole their boat, how did the dursleys get off the island? I can't imagine him being considerate enough to return it with magic if he's not going to reimburse them for the cost of tail-removal, which is likely more than the price of a cake.

Even if the squid was holding on to go boat with all of its 8+2 tentacles, it wouldn’t be able to propel itself forward since that’s why it has the tentacles in the first place
If you want a good example of what would happen if you take a deep sea fish up, look no further than the most common picture of the blobfish. Needless to say, they aren’t supposed to look like that.

The giant squid wasn't discovered until 2004 and caught in 2006. She wrote it in 1997. Although there were theories of giant squid and we KNEW they may be real but we didn't prove it until after the book was written (that may explain why the squid).
Funnily enough the picture you used to show a saltwater fish in freshwater is an example of deep sea fish being brought to the surface.
Speaking of salt water Krum's incomplete transfiguration into a shark during the Triwizard tournament seems problematic as sharks don't typically breathe freshwater. Have you done an episode in that yet?

Though, when I was trying to picture it mentally at first, I don't see why the squid isn't just hauling all the boats attached from the bottom by long ropes connected to a long pole or harness, so that the boats all get towed together and don't beat against one another. They could attach as many boats to the rod as possible, for however many students they had that year, plus one for Hagrid, and still free up a bunch of the squids tentacles to, say, save a child that had fallen out of the boat, because he's not hauling ten/eleven boats, he's hauling a long pole with however many boats attached

This is absolutely already explained in detail on Pottermore
plot hole detective on Pottermore the paintings are explained. They dont actually contain the essense of the person they depict. They are taught by the subject how to behave as themselves and are told their memories, and are also embued their personality by the magical painter. But they are mere replicas, much like magical photos. They are not the real person.

The boat pulling theory is really compelling, but as to how it survives in the lake, I would say it is simply because J.K. Rowling’s giant squid is based on the mythological sea monster, a magical creature equal to all the other magical/mythological beings that inhabit the grounds (unicorns, centaurs, merpeople, agromantulas, etc)
So basically the squid is a “fantastic beast” to which the muggle laws of nature don’t really apply.
If she had called it a Kraken it would’ve been more self-explanatory.

It can do both. We also don't have confirmation that there is exactly one squid in the lake. There could be multiple, so one leads them while the other guards. That would also explain why they have enough time to relax in the shallows while guarding the portal.

I think The "Giant Squid" in Harry Potter is actualy a Kraken and therefore not a squid.
Krakens in mitholagy lived close to the surface and had very sturdy skin, unlike squids. It could also be posible that krakens can live in any type of watery enviroment, as long as it is large enought to hold it.
Do you think Myrtle has met the Giant Squid from when she’s flushed down the toilet?
I mean it was over 60 years ago when she died and people keep flushing her toilet so she keeps going down there (not sure how she gets back) so yeah she probably did.
