  • Jesus was a carpenter, we all know this. But what exactly did carpenters do in New Testament times? Much more than making furniture! We find this out in Nazareth Village, an authentic full scale replica of a first century Galileean village, located on a historic site near the Church of the Annunciation. Here, Joseph the carpenter demonstrates visitors the tools and trick of his ancient trade.

The word used is “ builder “ where they would use stone and wood to build, not just one or the other. Tekton - craftsman or builder. When they still have tools you can see in Isreal that carpenters used, but I get it there is no way Jesus could have used carpenter tools. Born in a manger, stone manger ? Hung on a tree or cross, stone? Ark of the covenant, stone ? Ploughs and yokes obviously stone. Stone doors, stone furniture. It all makes sense

It was actually a 'stone cutter'...more than likely Jesus was working on projects in the 10 model Herodian cities around Israel (including Jerusalem)--why? because that is where the money was...the Jews were being taxed at an unreal rate to provide money for these cities--and then the Jews were expected to work on the projects as well and physically build these cities, which caused a great deal of resentment towards the Romans. I think that you are showing a much less sophisticated form of home carpentry--and that just isn't the truth...these men were professionals that got up and went to work every morning and they were doing backbreaking work building walls/roads and temples/synagogues...they also may have been fine craftsmen, doing fine stone carving for altars, etc...probably often working onsite in one of these model cities...dts/usa

You are probably right. Jesus' profession was that of a 'techton', ususally translated as carpenter. From this Greek expression we derive the word architect. In those days, teose people were all-rounders and specialists at the same time. And we can certainly say that Jesus would have been a very gifted one.
