I think when the Bible was entering Europe and later translated into the European languages, there were mostly wooden houses and structures. A house for a family was wood in Europe until very late in the Renaissance, not stone like in the middle east. So the greek tekton, builder, was naturally understood and translated into woodworker, or carpenter, as it would have been understood and translated in the middle eastern countries as stone worker, or stone mason. After all neither of the groups knew of wooden, resp. stone houses at the time.

Scolars and publications of Christian bible interpretors almost unanimously interpret it as 'builder of houses' as it would have been seen in 1st century Judea.

Just To clarify, The Greek scriptures do not say carpenter specifically, but ‘tekton’, which means ‘builder’, “stone mason”. The Aramaic equivalent to ‘tekton’ also means ‘SCHOLAR’, which jibes well with the indications in the gospels and elsewhere that Jesus had been a Pharisee before the start of his ministry.”

We all know Jesus was a carpenter, but it didn't mean the same back then. He was a mason, but it's a parable. Mason's build temples, churches and cathedrals. So it just means that Jesus built the Church, the ministry.

  • @hunterkirk480
    @hunterkirk480 13 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Well that is one view... but I have a number of questions.
    1) How exactly is being a carpenter more "romantic" then being a stone mason?
    2) Even in a community with a largely stone mason element there would be carpenters as the video the made proved.
    3) Craftsman can mean many thing. Builders even in those buildings used wood as well. It does not mean he had to be a stone mason.
So if he wants to think Jesus was a stone Mason fine... but I am going with the majority view of Christian scholars.

Jesus worked with his hands. He could've done any menial job. He collected grain on the Sabbath and was accused of breaking the Sabbath law. He could've been a farm worker. He talked a lot about sheep, wheat, bread, wine, vines. He clearly knew the ways of the land. He also predicted the temple's destruction, which came to pass. Ergo, he wasn't a fan of the bricks!

  • @LdotWill

I know you posted this 2 plus years ago but you really should do a more in depth study of the Greek word tekton. The definition includes the following:
a worker in wood, a carpenter, joiner, builder, a ship's carpenter or builder any craftsman, or workman, the art of poetry, maker of songs, a planner, contriver, plotter, an author. With this in mind you would then only be able to truly determine what was meant by tekton by knowing the most popular trades in and around Nazareth in Jesus time.

It is also good to wonder.
I say this for God gave us the ability to do so...
Given what you said about the region being dry and stone being the majority and wood minority, I wonder and imagine that Jesus would have worked with stone and would have been a builder using stone ( when he was old enough to ) but imagine those first years of his life, see him playing with wood toys and blocks, and moving onto making and learning some beginning craft with woodworking, again being that stone would be more fit to start when he was a few years older.
I can see him knowing both and maybe more craft and building with whatever was available or might have traded for with others.

@TickleMyPitz While each one of Jacob’s sons, as the head of a tribe, received his portion of the covenant blessings, Joseph inherited the birthright. IT IS FOOLISH TO TEACH THAT THE JEWS INHERITED ALL THE BLESSINGS GIVEN TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB. The material blessings of greatness, under the birthright, were not given to Judah but to Joseph and through him to his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.
IF YOU don't study...and believe what you are TOLD...how is that equal TRUTH?
    It does NOT~!!!

Nazareth didn't exist in Jesus's time. He was a Nasorean, an elite sect related to the Essenes in the Qumran - The Masada people. "Nazareth" was a mistranslation. and his real name was Yeshua (Aramaic) or Yehoshua (Hebrew). In Greek, it becamse "Iesous" which was later translated to Latin. Later the "I" mutated into a "J" and eventually becamse "Jesus."

They took the vowels to come up w yehoshua incorrectly . John 5:43 I have come in my father's name.... the father's name is Yahweh. The son: yahshua, which means Yahweh is salvation
Only Name given, whereby we must be saved and delivered from the Old covenant into the new covenant whereby we worship in spirit and on truth

@akachristian Damn, how much time did you spend writing all those comments? Was it really worth it? I only ask, because I used to engage in a lot of arguments on youtube (not to mention how many I still see all the time.), before I eventually realized that it was pointless, as neither people involved were going to budge the slightest bit on their way of thinking...Meaning that it ends up being a waste of time for both people.

jesus is a son of god from the heavens? really? jesus is a son from an extraterrestrial from outer space sounds more realistic. something some people today still refuse to except because it'll ruin many beliefs and faiths.

@imjohnandyyouare yes i've been watching the shows here and there. but Dr. Michio Kaku influence me more than the shows. he is open minded, and i shall be the same. i believe every faith is true, but misinterpreted and/or overly exaggerated. someday we'll know the truth :D

@culwin I understand you believe that the people we know today as "Jews" are God's "Chosen People," the Israel people of the Bible. You, and others, call them "The Chosen Race," "God's Chosen People," "Israel," "The Children of Israel," and other very complimentary names in relation to God. I also understand you believe the Jewish occupation of Palestine to be the prophetic "return of Israel" to "their" land.

@culwin Since it is Israelites "to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises" (Romans 9:4) it behooves us, as Christian Americans, to know as much about God's Chosen Israel and His Book as we can.
The information on these pages has been compiled in Christian love and a desire to stimulate your study of "the People of the Book."

If Jesus was alive on earth today I would commission him to make some of the most exquisite stone ornaments for my garden, I would not haggle over his fee as I know it would be an honest price for an honest days labour,, however I would not accept items made by miraculous means as this would be cheating and not a true indicator of a master craftsmans ability

Jesus? The Egyptians did all this way before Jesus was a thing. The greeks stole from the Egyptians and the Italians stole from the Greeks. Concrete mixtures were stolen from the Egyptians, all measurements, astronomy, energy was stolen from the Egyptians. By the way, the Egyptians were black black black. Which explains all the noses destroyed off of statues haha.
