Aligning your theoretical framework, methodology and research questions

  • This video describes how a theoretical framework, methodology and the research questions fit together in a research project. Remember that your thesis/paper should not be just a description of your framework and methodology. You should clearly link every aspect to your study. Examples of how to do this can be found here: www.dpbolvw.ne... (Chapter 4 for methodology and Chapter 12 for theoretical framework; free previews of each chapter are available at this link and the full book is available through academic access).

    Just cannot thank you enough Dr. Lynette for this wonderful video. It is of immense help to me, from Kolkata, India.

    OMG! Thank you! Writing Chapters 1-3 now and this is amazingly helpful. My topic is actually based around Experiential Learning, but from a QN perspective so I'm having problems with observations which is QL. This is solid.

    Great insights, thanks for sharing Lynette. Now in these Covid times, this is very helpful if one is working without a Supervisor. Thank you sharing.

    I would like to understand how to fuse the theoretical framework to my research gap, after doing my literature review. I am struggling with that part. I clearly understand the theory behing theoretical framework. What I am failing to understand is how to relate the concepts of the theoretical framework to my research topic, aims and objectives

      You have to explain why you chose that specific theoretical framework for your study. Explain why it is useful to help you understand your topic and data.

    I STiil dont understand what theoretical framework means can someone explain it more

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A theoretical framework presents an understanding of the philosophical framework within which you see your research and view knowledge. It also describes the theories and concepts used in your research and explains how these theories and concepts are used to analyse data and explain findings.

    I found this video useful. Can you pl. make more videos on differences between theoretical framework and methodology, with examples. Thank you.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash

      I am planning to make more videos about academic research this year, so keep an eye out. For now though, here is a quick summary of the difference: A theoretical framework shapes the way you collect and interpret your findings as it demonstrates how you think about and view knowledge. Your methodology describes the steps you took to collect and analyse your data.

    Thank you for this great video, it is really helpful.
    My question relates to the use of secondary data and any chosen frameworks.
    The dataset I am using for my PhD was not entirely designed by me and lacks important factors which would, technically, need to be included in the survey if I was to use this framework. My thesis demands for me to use a framework which has guided the analyses but it feels like I am working backwards which is not ideal.
    Do you have any advice on how to navigate this situation?

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like you may need to develop a conceptual framework rather than using an existing theoretical framework. This would allow you to integrate the additional concepts which you think are important for your study.

    Is it for qualitative research is not it ???

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash

      While this video has been made for qualitative research yes, it is also applicable to quantitative research. Your theoretical framework, methodology, and research questions should always be aligned in academic research.
