Haven't really put one together but if I had to do it now, I'd say 'the purpose of this qualitative research is to examine the motivation levels and self-concept of Kurdish pre - undergraduate EAP students in homogeneous class groups in Kurdistan, North Iraq in 2016.'
Stacey Xaelani I recommend narrowing from (1) motivation level and (2) self-concept down to a single aspect of these undergraduates. For example, you could choose self-concept... and then do lots of digging in the literature to see what you really mean by self concept. Is there a specific PART of self concept about which you are interested?

Once again, Dr. Guy, you have given me hope. I first found your videos when I was at the five year mark of my thesis and shortly after I bought "The Dissertation Warrior" book, which was invaluable. However, there was just too much disaster happening within my thesis (and my life - those two things may have been related!) and I withdrew from my PhD. I have had just over a year off, and have recently reopened the dissertation door - determined to finish! Your words make so much sense. Having just watched this video, I finally understand what a theoretical framework actually is - how has this taken me so long?!! I submitted my comprehensive exam and my committee loved it but I have substantial work to strengthen my exam. I have been asked to submit a conceptual framework???? I watched your Theoretical Framework video, same thing?
Different. I wonder if they mean "submit either a conceptual or theoretical framework." Sometimes, people use the terms interchangeably. However, they are a bit different. Frameworks, in general, allow us to understand something better. A theroetical framework is an EXISTING MODEL that could be used to understand something. A conceptual framework, on the other hand, is CREATED when there are no existing models that, alone, can help us understand what you are studying. People often "create" a conceptual framework by piecing together many theories.
Submit a two-pages of narrative of conceptual framework, incorporating ideas from Maxwell and a diagram.
My topic;
Network relationships and shared capital of white, working class, first generation college students. Agreed- I am a bit all over the place and need to narrow my focus down a bit better. I need to "unpack" my literature review more (whatever unpack means). My writing is weak but I have down the reading yet I am unable to produce the writing.

Dr. Guy, I really like your supportive video. I have not have lots idea what you are talking about in video for that reason I have to buy books and read- read I think while developing a theoretical frame work concept and context must be clear. For that we have to define by conceptual definition and operational definition right? Some case I found myself so difficult to define operationally like Coping capacity. What you think can only conceptual framework bring significant output? What would you suggest for develop theoretical framework on assessing coping capacity in emergencies? Thank you.
Raj KC Hi Raj. Thank you for your engagement and comments. They mean the world to me. Theoretical frameworks provide us the lenses by which we can examine a certain topic. They help us see specific aspects of a specific problem. When we are talking about writing definitions, the best strategy is often to find how one author defines a specific term -- then, see how others define it. Same? Different? Thank you for the posting. Quite honestly, the video did help, but I am still unsure of exactly what I am supposed to have at the end. Is it just something like "my theoretical framework is postmodernism or posthumanism"? Or, is it a paper which connects all the theories of how I will get from point A to point B? Is it a lit review in disguise? This seems so abstract that I can't get my head around it. Thanks!

Hi Joe! Something like this could work (depending on your dissertation type): "... Therefore, this study examined XYZ through the lens of ABC theory as described by Jones (2013)... This lens is described as ABC. It has four parts. First... Second... Finally." However, consider reading dissertations from your program to see what the norm is!

Dr. Guy, I just started my Doctorate program, and already I am feeling excited and overwhelmed at the process before me. So let me ask this while I am just starting the program, should I also be in my literature review creation/starting process at this point? Also, what stage of a Doctorate program is the (my) topic of research come into play or should I be thinking of that at this point in class number one? I get the impression from watching a few of your videos now that your answer would be yes, but I have no clue at this point what the dissertation will even be about. Hi BrainMatterex420, if I was in your shoes, I would start building a list of quotes gathered from various sources and endeavor to read at least one source/article each day, pulling from it 5 ideas that you feel are important to hang on for later. Check out my literature review video for more information on how to do that. In my mind, you can start immediately.

Hi Pat. Operational definitions are those specific definitions chosen by you for specific research terms. There are potentially dozens of definitions for a single term. So, using your knowledge of the literature, you can point us to a specific definition for each term. Each definition should (1) come from the definition made by another researcher, or (2) be a combination of multiple researcher's definitions. Regardless, you'll want to attach citations at the end of your operable definitions.
Dr. Guy, I am working on my DBA in Health Care Administration. I am working on identifying theoretical frameworks from my research articles. I would like to know if you have an example of a paper that identifies the theoretical frameworks of articles and how it is put together.
Queen Carr Hi Queen, it's common for articles to invoke such frameworks in the background/intro sections. However, the key question is, "Where do dissertations identify their theoretical frameworks?" They do this in three places: (1) at the end of chapter 1, usually; (2) in chapter 2 near the end, and (3) in the carrying out of the methodology of the study. Does that answer your question? I feel like i'm missing something.

Hi Mustafa! If you are asking me to provide such a list, it's not possible -- as there are probably hundreds of thousands to millions of such frameworks -- I imagine. However, if you are asking if one could create a concise list of theoretical frameworks for a specific domain of research, then, yes, someone could create such a list for their dissertation! That's what you are doing in your literature review, in part: You are showing the relevant theoretical approaches and advances through time.

+Regina Grant Hi Regina! When you look at the research, you should find many places here theoretical frameworks are mentioned. For example, if you look at the most recent 25 dissertations of similar topic to yours, you'll easily find 15-25 different theoretical frameworks mentioned.

well, I read different articles and different researches and I chose the variables, research questions, and other things. The problem is that I don't know the theory I MUST follow. I mean I understood the articles, related them to my research questions. But, really how can I know that this is the theory !! IN the articles and researches, they mentioned the methodology they used, but not the theory !

Dr Guy, thank you for your very educative videos. I am a PhD student working on my dissertation. I have been battling with theoretical and conceptual frameworks for about a year now. What is the minimum and maximum number of theories i can use in a dissertation. My research has very little literature written on it so i had to go out and look for information from the informal sector. I came back and designed a solution which i went back and tested with the endusers. I looked at theories and each stage seems to be addressed by a different theory. nassz100 It's not uncommon to have 2 theories in use! The question is, "Is that a norm in your program and school?" You'll have to look at other dissertations published within your program to see the answer to that question.
Can I consider that the theoretical framework of my study is post structuralism as I have questionnaires and interviews that collect facts and opinions?
