    Is it okay to use two different frameworks for addressing my research questions. For example Technology adoption Framework and HCI theory in combination. If so is it a conceptual framework as i am combining two different theoretical framework for my research in which I aim to establish new concept. I am stuck. Kindly help.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. Yes, it is possible to combine two theories as a framework. If you are using both theories the way they are, it is still a theoretical framework. If you are taking some elements from one theory and some from another, you are creating a conceptual framework.

    Which one do you think is more suitable for decolonising research?

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Either one would be suitable for decolonising research. The main thing would be to ensure that the theories/concepts you choose do not reinforce colonial thinking. For example, you may choose a theoretical framework that is based in a non-Western understanding of the world. Alternatively, you may choose to create a conceptual framework based on concepts from different theories to better reflect a non-colonial understanding of a concept or issue.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Regarding choosing a theoretical framework, you usually do this by exploring which other theories have been used in your field as well as based on your own view of the world. I've recently written about theoretical and conceptual frameworks and how you can choose them. You can see that here: www.lynettepretorius.com/the_scholars_way_blog/theoretical-and-conceptual-frameworks-in-research/ The video's concepts talked about the second part - how you see the world (i.e. ontology, epistemology, and axiology) shapes your choice of research paradigm. You can read more about that here: www.lynettepretorius.com/the_scholars_way_blog/demystifying-research-paradigms/

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct - only the first word, the first word after a colon, and the names of people/places should start with a capital letter. So it is "Wellbeing in doctoral education" not "Wellbeing In Doctoral Education".

    Why can't we use both of them in a study? You made a such a strong statement that needs to be clarified please.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since they serve the same purpose (to shape the vision of the study), you can't have both. Either you are using a pre-established theory, or you are developing a theory using concepts from several other theories. The only time you would have more than one framework is if you had a project with two parts that were unrelated to each other.

  • @stuggoto750
    @stuggoto750 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I don't understand why they would be mutually exclusive 🤔Because surely, people interpret the world differently BECAUSE they have constructed their knowledge differently? Maybe I am just misunderstanding.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While they are both ontologically the same (relativism - multiple realities), they are epistemologically different. Both understand that knowledge cannot be fully known because it exists in the minds of individual people, but constructivism sees this knowledge as socially constructed while interpretivism sees the knowledge as people's individual interpretations of their lived realities. Constructivists co-construct meaning with their participants in order to enact a change in their society by better understanding the ways a particular context is shaping individuals' experiences. Interpretivists focus on letting the participants speak for themselves in order to better understand that individual person's lived reality (not to change it). Since they have different epistemologies and purposes, they cannot be used together.

    I get it so if it is general knowledge. Fore example, He perfers since everyone perfers something it doesn't do anything and isn't complete. So If I say He breaths that isn't a complete sentence because everyone breaths.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is not related to general knowledge. He breathes is a complete sentence because it contains both a subject and a verb (just like "He walks" or "He eats"). "He prefers" is an incomplete sentence because it lacks an object (He prefers what?). Prefers is a verb which has to be used with an object.

    • @Hi-sz9yg
      @Hi-sz9yg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LynettePretoriusMonash It is like what information is needed to portray useful info and saying he perfers with no object isn't useful.

    • @LynettePretoriusMonash
      @LynettePretoriusMonash 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Hi-sz9yg as I said earlier, he prefers is incomplete because the word "prefers" needs to be attached to a noun (the object in the sentence). For example, the sentence would be complete if you said he prefers bread or he prefers water. You can't just say he prefers. You need to specify WHAT he prefers for the sentence to be complete.

      They are different in that one is an established theory while the other one is the combination of multiple concepts into a theory for a particular study. Research Paradigm = (Ontology + Epistemology + Methodology) Ontology: The nature of the phenomena being studied and their relationships. Epistemology: How knowledge about the phenomena is acquired, validated, and communicated. Methodology: The strategies, methods, and procedures used to collect, analyze, and interpret data about the phenomena. Together, these components form a research paradigm that guides researchers in their work, shaping their approach to understanding and investigating a particular topic.
