I have a 2006 M6 v10 with 140,000+ miles on it and have never had a bearing problem. I do my own oil and have never seen metal in the oil. Also mine has a dual clutch smg. The only problem i have is with batteries. Need to replace every 2 years like clock work. Around the 2 year mark it will start having trouble codes. New battery and coded go away.
My old boss had the m5 version had so many issues with the vanos system. Before it even got enough miles to grenade the engine, from the bearings. It got lemon lawed. He dodged a bullet.
I love mine and I'll never sell it, keep up with maintenance and you'll be fine. You're right though, buying a cheap one is definitely a ticking time bomb.
Not so simple: "That's how simple this is. It's a manual transmission but a computer runs it." Another in a long series of steps of overcomplicating things that do not need complicating! Simple: It's a manual clutch and your left foot runs it."

If your going to buy either this or the M5 V10 I would not recommend buying a cheap example without full service history from Bmw , I researched and waited until the right M5 came along ( M5 late 2007 LCI model) 3 years later apart from spending only £620 on throttle actuators with better circuit boards nothing else has needed replacement it’s been a fantastic car to own and run very reliable indeed, I’ve had the oil sampled to check for wear and tear which came back perfect.. a point to make regarding pre LCI models is exactly what’s happened here but the main reason this has happened comes down to neglect ie; reving the engine when it’s cold .. this engine and gearbox needs to warmed up for about fifteen minutes or so and when purchasing the all important 1200 mile running in service needs to be seen in the service booklet , along with preventative maintenance and servicing by a mechanic that knows these cars ( I have mine serviced at Bmw which is similar to a specialist prices that’s why I continue with Bmw plus it keeps the all important paperwork in check if I ever sold it ) don’t get me wrong if any work is carried out like for instance the throttle actuators that needed replacing I have an M specialist that works on my car who is fantastic and considering Bmw wanted £3500 he fitted mine for £620 inclusive in an hour and a half while I waited and that was on a hot engine which I thought was amazing 😳 ... since this work was carried out it’s been faultless which was a massive relief 😅 These cars are becoming quite rare in the U.K. because of situations like this which is sad really but at the same time the good examples like my one are only going to go up in price over the years ... it’s a shame this happened to this guys car ( what do you expect for $3750 ) ... just don’t be put off by the scaremongers that sit in their chairs with their laptops spouting rubbish about these cars and how unreliable they are bearing in mind that 99.9% have never owned one 🥴😭😎👍🇬🇧 Forgot to mention I did have the oil cooler changed ( located under the front bumper) I think it was a stone chip but anyway it was £300 fitted so again not expensive..... I hope all this info helps and if anyone has more info on these cars please share as every bit of information helps towards owning one of these fantastic M cars .. there is a very knowledgeable bloke on TH-cam called M tech Guy ( I think that’s what he’s called ) who’s British and lives in New Zealand that owns an M5 and works on his car very good mechanic and also the Bmw doctor from the U.K. 👌
If JR listened to Scotty he would have bought a 1994 Toyota Celica and keep it for 50 years. It would still have it's original engine, transmission, power steering pump, and AC compressor.
Biggest problem was BMW themselves telling their M car customers they can go 15K miles between oil changes 🙈 Madness !!! especially with that 10W60 Castrol engine oil 🤣 I wouldn’t do that with a Diesel let alone a high revving performance engine. I changed the oil & filter in my M3 CSL every 3K to 5K miles 👍🏼 and at 92K miles when I sold it, it still had the original unopened engine with original bearings, head gasket, etc with perfect compression and good power. 💪🏼😎
I had a 335i and it was very reliable. I put 132k miles on it before trading it in for a brand new Volkswagen Golf as I needed a more practical and fuel efficient car. Only thing it needed was a water pump and blower motor.
5 years and at 70k miles on my E60 M5. Runs like a champ! Take care of the car and it will take care of you. You buy a neglected junky one and expect it to work normally? Lol.
My sympathies. I honestly thought this M6 could be saved. JR is probably right in never fix an engine with major problems. Car Wizard has mentioned GM AFM 5.3 are to avoid as they usually cost $4500 to fix. I learned that the hard way fixing my 07 after head gasket failure at 125000 miles. I paid to fix it. The garage that did it didn't do it right. They tried getting me to spend another $7000 on another engine after spending $5500 fixing my old engine that developed oil pressure out of range. I declined. With the help of a friend's hooptie salvage Oldsmobile 88, I was able to wait a couple months and finally contact an engine specialist who figured out my low oil pressure at idle. Bad valley cover the original garage never replaced. So $6000 on repairs, my money pit of a truck is still going. Best of luck on future projects. Ultimately you showed it does pay to have friends in the salvage business.
Watch it just be a crank position sensor 🤣🤣 causing the stalling and no start issue. Vanos is another issue good move getting out before you got upside down in it!
As much as it pains me to say "I told you so" , I told you so. Bimmer used to make a wonderful drivers car. The more the technology increased and the engineers cheaped out with plastic parts the worse things got. Sad times for BMW.
A relative of mine had one from new for a couple of years. We did an autocross school together and I was in my 99 Civic Si LOL. Incredible brute of a car, but clearly not meant to be around for long. What an engineering failure. LOL
Sorry to say I saw this coming (after almost buying one myself, but running away once I read up on these monsters). The Vanos and rod bearings are the nails in the coffin on these cars. BMW made sure of that by jacking up the prices on vanos parts, especially the 4 little solenoids at the front of the motor, which originally were about $180 each, until Beemer jacked them up to $1900 each! Just showing their faithful customers some of that BMW love.....
Sorry for your loss. I own the same car of 7 years. I think it boils down to how these cars are driven and maintained. I've had minimal issues. I don't drive it much and my mechanic is awesome.
And here I thought going into business two months before the pandemic was a stupid Idea. You have made me just slightly better about my impending bankruptcy.
I bought my 2007 E63 M6 10 years ago, I never in tended using my car as a daily driver . It's always garaged there is currently 26 thousand miles on it so it drives and feels like a new car..I spent considerably more buying my car 10 years ago Dollar equivalent possibly 70 thousand. That car you have was not looked after the door card is a mess ! Less than 4 thousand dollars in fairness what did you expect ? That car needs a lot spent on it to get it right again. My DSC pump went twice ! Fortunately it's going perfectly now ! If you want one of these you need to buy one that has been looked after properly with the lowest mileage one you can find !
Honestly I’m upset that ppl think bmw are bad cars when there really not. To own a bmw you gotta make sure your on top of the maintenance and it will last you ive owner a few and maintained them well and they rewarded me with good reliability. With bmw you gotta pay to play if you can’t afford the maintenance then get a Toyota or Honda that simple those are cars that can take passed oil changes and all the abuse you can throw at them. German cars are not meant for abuse or to be maintained bad. So yea in short a car is as good as the owner who cars for them 🤷🏽♂️
@@james_chatman I know I will get burned for this but Mercedes is the only one that makes decent engines in Germany. I have owned a number of BMW's, Audis, WVs and Mercedes over the years and only had luck with the Mercedes.
I think their engineers and executives should have to watch youtube videos of their $100,000+ cars going off to the scrapyards every day. To make it worse they should have to drink American beer as they watch.
I feel like I need to put something straight for all the commenters here saying all BMWs are garbage. The reason most of these cars are money pits is because the second, third, fourth etc owner didn't care for them. If you get one with few owners, decently maintained ALL of its life, they won't break your wallet. M50s and M52s are legendarily reliable even under abuse, as long as you warm them up properly. I've owned my E36 328i coupe project for 6 years now, and have a high mileage, beat up, many owners E36 Touring 316i as a daily driver for 2 years. For both cars I've only had 2 issues in those 6 years: The radiator started leaking on the coupe, and 1 rear shock on the touring started leaking. According to the internet, every single component on the cooling system of those cars is "like glass", fragile as hell... The radiator on the coupe was the original one from a 177,000 mile 328i Touring, that I used as a parts donor. While the 316i Touring is the exact car I'm telling you never to buy, it's working perfectly fine, headliner isn't even falling down!
I don't understand, wasn't there A LOT of metal in the oil? Shouldn't that have been a dead giveaway that the engine was trash and needed a full rebuild/replacement? What was the point ins spending so much time and parts to fix it?
@@JakeobE I was wondering the same thing, but I figured that must be normal for a car that smokes rod bearings like crack. Anyhow... It was a swing and a miss. It happens.
Maxwelhse it doesnt, people just dont know how to drive it. theres an oil temp gauge built in, youre supposed to drive it normally under 3k rpm until the oil gets to temperature, not the coolant temperature. then after that, you can do some hard driving if you want. there are tons of these in europe without any of the rod bearing failures
Man I live in Munich in Germany... nobody drive this thing anymore.. because they broke so oft and the service is so expensive. Everybody buy the new models now is the M8. M6 nobody wants. I hope you learn you lesson🙂🙂

@@monkeybrass3240 The RB's was preventative while the left VANOS unit was going bad. VANOs is just BMW's variable valve timing, like Honda's VTEC system. Oil pressure drop and rattle are the signa. Unlike a ball bearing that contains small balls for rotating parts, the connecting rod bearing is a plain bearing using just friction and oil supply to allow the connecting rod to rotate as the crankshaft spins. The rod bearing lets lubricant reach the bearing’s interior through a pinhole near the top. It also allows free rotation on the crankshaft with reduced friction within the bearing. If they go bad, your engine blows. Did an oil analysis when purchased and their were traces of metal shavings. Installed a ceramic kit from FCP euro that included gaskets and oil. Total with parts and labor was around $7k. Exhaust w xpipe was around $6k installed
Three actually. Tyler had another 7 series that they also drove to J&J. It was the BMW that the Car Wizard refused to fix and ended up as the 1st video with the Car Ninja.
@psidman I've definitely learned when these BMW repairs fail, it's not Car Ninja's fault. Sometimes there just beyond saving before he touches them. Ultimately with every vehicle, can't know until you try.
One of those smaller oil pumps is for lubricating the high pressure oil pump and the other small oil pump is to lubricate the small oil pump that lubricates the high pressure oil pump. That noise it keeps making is the sound broken BMWs make when they mock their owner, there is a small shredder in the engine bay near the intake and it wants you to insert hundred dollar bills

This isn't rocket science. But it was designed to compete with Super Cars. Bearings and SMG maintenance need to be done period. If you don't do those, you can't be surprised if it breaks.

Add nearly ANY of the "Sharknose" BMW's from the mid-1980's for extra poise. The original BMW 6 Series is what an orgasm would look like if you could see it!
Ive forgotten the model code e39 Maybe? The 6 cyl 2000 ish 528 with the aluminum block. When you do a head gasket on one of those you end up having to put threaded inserts into the block because the threads pull as you torque the head down. You phone the engine reconditioner and he comes up with his 50mm thick piece of steel with six 15mm or 16mm holes in it that correspond with the head bolts. He bolts it down with std head bolts and sleeves that fit into his steel block. He drills them and puts in the insets. From memory 18mm coarse thread on the outside and the standard thread on the inside. They are lock-tighted into the block. The drill bit had a collar so he didn't go to deep into the engine block. On at least half of them that was the reason the head gasket was leaking in the first place. The head bolts had pulled by themselves.
YOU just LAZY if you think it’s bad. You don’t know what your talking about. If you have some money, replace, fix and BOOM, the ultimate driving machine.
I've only really been into Automotive YT for a couple of years, but I'd like to think that at some point some staffer at BMW reports to their execs that "ya know, a lot of our cars show up on these YT channels and they're always either completely broken from the start, or still fail after well meaning people put insane amounts of work and money into them. This might affect our reputation with future potential buyers".
Low oil pressure is the cause. Problem is that if the bearings are worn, then the crank will wear too -though not as much. Once replacement bearings get fitted you have the same cause but loads more material to shave off the white metal by the rough crank and cause a lockup.
the noise you hear is the SMG pump priming, the fact that is priming constantly is not good. So even if the engine was running correctly you would have SMG pump issues down the road. Also the 2 aux pumps are there to keep oil in the sump during high G cornering.
Yes completely agreed with. I just don't know how they even stay afloat they should be doing way worse than Nissan. Everybody's should just know not to buy them used, no matter what. Only lease.

People whining and they don't know much about the S85 engine. When you get a 13 year old 507 hp V10 supercar which has an engine derived from F1 cars, you need to do your research, i'm gonna sum it up for you: 1. Rod bearings are consumables, metal flakes destroys oil pumps, vanos pump, wherever that oil gets with those flakes it will break anything. 2. SMG pump it's consumable, it was a recall for them and even after that it didn't solve the issues. Or tear it apart, manually fix the electrical motor with better brushes and stuff. Don't expect just to drop bearings in, oil and 2 lines of oil and this engine is new again. You need to change the vanos pump, the oil pumps and vanos solenoids. Revise mechatronics on the SMG gearbox, and mechatronics solenoids (it's $500 job to make it new) . VANOS pump drives high oil pressure to the VANOS solenoids which move the timing on cams. Sound beneath the car when you unlock it is the SMG pump accumulating pressure. It's no gamble, it's just knowledge.

Thanks for the breakdown of the Vanos system. People complain about it, but don't explain why its an issue. I wonder what Honda or Mazda engineers think of BMW's solution for Variable timing.......
I too am flummoxed that didn't lose any money on this boat-anchor. You are perhaps the only guy in history who owned both a BMW and a Range Rover and has walked away unscathed.
I also had an A4 (B8) that always had something wrong too. Car had some fucked electrics that Audi never managed to properly fix (two ECUs died, no idea why), and the last straw was a chunk of one of the pistons breaking off right by one end of the wrist pin, causing the piston ring to break as well. Didn't help that someone backed their truck into my fender too, I think that car was cursed. Sucks because it was well maintained, and it was only two years old. Got tired of shit breaking and sold it for a Lexus. The A4 was a nice car and I loved it but being in the shop 25%+ of the year is unacceptable for a daily driver
Title should be “never buy an M car for less then $4k, chances are it’s a piece of shit”. $20k and up is what m6’s in good condition sell for. Never get one off an independent seller or anywhere else other then a dealership, unless they have service records and very low mileage, and this engine was already failing since his first video on it for all the people with low IQ.
Don't feel bad dude. Very few owners are willing to maintain the V10 powered BMWs appropriately. Now if you stay on top of maintenance and have a decent budget, you'll have a decent performance car with outstanding performance. If you let these V10 models fall into disrepair, then all bets are off and you'll be very lucky to ever bring the car back to factory specifications. I swear by the BMW straight 6 turbo motors. They have high maintenance requirements but are more affordable. I am quite happy with my BMW M2.
If Vanos is completely out of function the car should still start and could run a bit rough and with less power. If it does not start at all the reason is be elsewhere. Vanos is just adjusting the angle, it is not going completely out of sync when it is not activated. On my N62 i have removed cables from solenoids (i was diagnosing other issue) and the car was running just fine. Rough but fine. It is sad to see such a nice car going out of the garage for a wrong reason. Get ISTA Rheingold software and do the proper reading, there must be more BMW specific codes that generic scanners can not detect. Maybe crankshaft or camshaft sensor...
@@TheUnknownGoat1 Hoovie never sells his cars at a break even price. Every sale he loses money. Maybe the TH-cam income helps but every car sold costs him money. JR got a bad car but he got it for the right price and will not make anything but also not lose anything. I don't know why anyone buys a used BMW over 6 yers old, they all fall apart and are too costly to fix, even low mileage versions.
Can't claim any experience on V10s but I've dealt with plenty of 6 cylinder Vanos issues. They are much less complex of course because they do not have a separate oil pump. The vanos system just taps the engine's normal pressure. However, I can't see how vanos system failure causes damage to camshafts ? Is the suggestion that the cam bearings are destroyed by foreign matter ( metal ) in the engine oil ? Also, if inspection of the filter housing shows a gold mine ? Gold metal would indicate something other than a big end or main bearing breakdown. More like a bronze bearing / bush. Finally, I have seen the suggestion that the big end bearings have too little clearance. That would account for the sort of damage seen here. Too little clearance will initially impair boundary lubrication and then slow the conversion to hydradynamic lubrication. The more extreme wear on number one big end bearings would also support that theory if it is the last one in line. Seems to me that the best option here would be to dismantle the top end as well as the bottom so you know what you have from the start. It's not as if the heads have to come off. I'm not suggesting it's a 5 minute job, but it's not the end of the world or dreadfully expensive to pull the manifolding and cam boxes etc. Pity to spend so much on the bottom end only to end up here. Again, I'm just asking here. I'd really like to know more detail - particularly about the possible damage to cams that's suggested.
The S65 V8 in the E9x M3s, derived from the S85, uses the main engine oil pump to run the VANOS system. The S85 is the odd engine out, using a high-pressure secondary radial pump to provide oil to the VANOS system. I'm assuming the reason is it takes a lot of pressure to phase those four cams, with each covering five cylinders.
I would love to see some BMW engine voodoo or even BMW themselves take this engine and get it sorted. It would make for a great documentary. Would also include all parts and labour costs.
I had a 2007 e63 m6 for 3 years got it at 68k ended with 82k miles, instead of 10w-60 use 5w-50, change the thermostat, replace vanos system, and change throttle actuators, you’ll be fine anything else I’d have to see it in on a lift And diagnose
How does a car like this end up in the state this one is in? It’s like every owner never cared much for it. You a “brave” man taking it on in the first place!
I’m still working on my S85😂 now my problem is that this thing chugs oil at 1 qt per 70 miles right after rebuild with collared sleeves. We especially measured all the tolerances and they are all well with in the range before we put everything together. Now the prime suspect are the non-return valves.
I loved my E39 525i and my E53 X5 3.0i. I was meh on my E46 330CiC, but I grew absolutely hate my E53 4.8is. After that many BMWs, I can say one thing clearly - if you are going to buy a used cheap BMW, stick with the 6 cylinder. Sorry, JohnRoss, But I think the SMG is the worst thing that was ever put into a BMW besides iDrive. Most mechanics and BMW enthusiasts agree with me. It isn’t a matter of if the SMG pump will go out and leave you stranded, but how soon. I lost “a Hoovie fortune” on my 4.8is, and never looked back.

If your going to buy either this or the M5 V10 I would not recommend buying a cheap example without full service history from Bmw , I researched and waited until the right M5 came along ( M5 late 2007 LCI model) 3 years later apart from spending only £620 on throttle actuators with better circuit boards nothing else has needed replacement it’s been a fantastic car to own and run very reliable indeed, I’ve had the oil sampled to check for wear and tear which came back perfect.. a point to make regarding pre LCI models is exactly what’s happened here but the main reason this has happened comes down to neglect ie; reving the engine when it’s cold .. this engine and gearbox needs to warmed up for about fifteen minutes or so and when purchasing the all important 1200 mile running in service needs to be seen in the service booklet , along with preventative maintenance and servicing by a mechanic that knows these cars ( I have mine serviced at Bmw which is similar to a specialist prices that’s why I continue with Bmw plus it keeps the all important paperwork in check if I ever sold it ) don’t get me wrong if any work is carried out like for instance the throttle actuators that needed replacing I have an M specialist that works on my car who is fantastic and considering Bmw wanted £3500 he fitted mine for £620 inclusive in an hour and a half while I waited and that was on a hot engine which I thought was amazing 😳 ... since this work was carried out it’s been faultless which was a massive relief 😅
These cars are becoming quite rare in the U.K. because of situations like this which is sad really but at the same time the good examples like my one are only going to go up in price over the years ... it’s a shame this happened to this guys car ( what do you expect for $3750 ) ... just don’t be put off by the scaremongers that sit in their chairs with their laptops spouting rubbish about these cars and how unreliable they are bearing in mind that 99.9% have never owned one 🥴😭😎👍🇬🇧
Forgot to mention I did have the oil cooler changed ( located under the front bumper) I think it was a stone chip but anyway it was £300 fitted so again not expensive..... Perventative maintnance is key, my buddy has had his E60 M5 for 8 years now and recently bought an M6 V10

If the old oil had that much metal in it, all that metal has been coursing thru the engine before it got to the oil filter. Recipe for disaster.
As much as it pains me to say "I told you so" , I told you so. Bimmer used to make a wonderful drivers car. The more the technology increased and the engineers cheaped out with plastic parts the worse things got. Sad times for BMW.

The Vanos and rod bearings are the nails in the coffin on these cars.
BMW made sure of that by jacking up the prices on vanos parts, especially the 4 little solenoids at the front of the motor, which originally were about $180 each, until Beemer jacked them up to $1900 each!

So yea in short a car is as good as the owner who cars for them 🤷🏽♂️
BMW ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Why feel ashamed? Fools keep buying them.

I only live a few miles from J and J. Time to start my own hooptie channel.
Just throwing rod bearings in never lasts anyway.
Exactly. I was surprised they threw bearings in and expected it to be good.

Hi can you provide info on the rod bearings and Vanos ?

@psidman only in US. In Europe people are fixing BMW :P
I was thinking the same thing
Automotive yes but the owner cannot be impatient and have ants in his pants. It seems a BMW owner needs to be patient and methodical.

I am quite happy with my BMW M2.
few days ago it seemed to be the better one vs hoovies e38 😂 i guess the only winning move with an out of warranty bimmer is not to play 😆
Oh thats a bummer, I was eagerly waiting to see the M6 in its full beast mode, but thats sad to see it go..
Even when your crazy ex tries to kill you a little part of you wants to stay with them, life of a bmw v10 owner
Even when you're taking a L you're doing better than Hoovie 🤣
I think Tyler has family money, because he lost a lot of money on cars and paid a lot of money to the wizard and car ninja.
How when Hoovie drove his BMW home?
@@TheUnknownGoat1 Hoovie never sells his cars at a break even price. Every sale he loses money. Maybe the TH-cam income helps but every car sold costs him money. JR got a bad car but he got it for the right price and will not make anything but also not lose anything. I don't know why anyone buys a used BMW over 6 yers old, they all fall apart and are too costly to fix, even low mileage versions.
@@batsonelectronics Ah ok I see what you're saying. But now I feel like they both lost because BMWs are money pits.
batsonelec C Yeah no. My E36 I bought for 750 bucks just needs basic cheap service and has been great for the past 2 years
Can't claim any experience on V10s but I've dealt with plenty of 6 cylinder Vanos issues.
Better hold on to that Kia a bit longer. You're running out of running vehicles.
BMW's are junk, Lost my ass on 2 of them and vowed to never do it again. They are strictly lease and dump cars.
I too learned the hard way.
Listen up fanboys, this guy gets it. Enough excuses for unreliable garbage.
If you can't afford the repairs, maintain them and service them in time.. Yes they are
So true 😂😂😂
@KaasKroket met Kaas french cars 🤣🤣🤣
Feeling your sadness. I hope you have better luck next time. But it was good videos that came from it. Was worth the gamble.
I would love to see some BMW engine voodoo or even BMW themselves take this engine and get it sorted.
It would make for a great documentary. Would also include all parts and labour costs.
I had a 2007 e63 m6 for 3 years got it at 68k ended with 82k miles, instead of 10w-60 use 5w-50, change the thermostat, replace vanos system, and change throttle actuators, you’ll be fine anything else I’d have to see it in on a lift
And diagnose
Next JR video: how to have an endless network of people willing to do stuff for free/cheap and/or bail you out
How does a car like this end up in the state this one is in? It’s like every owner never cared much for it. You a “brave” man taking it on in the first place!
House of broken dreams.... i died
I’m still working on my S85😂 now my problem is that this thing chugs oil at 1 qt per 70 miles right after rebuild with collared sleeves. We especially measured all the tolerances and they are all well with in the range before we put everything together. Now the prime suspect are the non-return valves.
I was so hoping this thing could be de-riced and put back on the road. Bummer.
