      @@neato24 It's me but I work a full time job, and I was a video editor by trade! I take a lot of inspiration from this channel. Unfortunately our community consists of a rude Finnish guy who knows everything and parts are always on back order. The answer to your issue at the 13min mark is a sensor beside the rear view mirror. It is the front wind screen condensation sensor. It is broken which the car takes to mean there is high humidity present / condensation. So it calls for heat via the wind screen. Cheap and relatively simple to replace this sensor and should address your issue. (took me a while to figure out on a 645ci!)

  • @Merinnnn
    @Merinnnn ปีที่แล้ว +124

    For the heater issue try to check the “fog” sensor on the windshield. I had the same problem with my E92, the windshield was replaced and they damaged the sensor. I never realized the car had it, it senses the moisture on the windscreen. If it thinks it’s fogged up, the auto setting prioritizes the top vents for hot air. Could be your problem as wel, worth a try :)

    • @Crunchymunchys
      @Crunchymunchys ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It will either be a humidity or condensation sensor, those are most of the time put behind the plastic covering behind the rear view mirror. It would take a special kind of stupid to damage those during windshield replacement but its not entirely unheard of if the location uses extractors to break the urethane bead.
      I work in auto glass and I never even thought about this until I read your comment and it was a massive light bulb in my head. It could be a super simple fix, then again if they were running just water through the coolant system its probably better to change the core anyways, rust always has a habit of forming in hard to reach and see places

      I was just about to write that! My e60 showed similar behaviour. Initially, I thought the heater core is defect, until I found out about this sensor. Turns out everything was in order and the area where I live (tropical climate) is so humid that the sensor kicks in quite often, causing the windshield fans to blast out hot air!

    Yet another fine-wrenching episode, my personal favorite thank you very much. I'm loving those new’ish torque values that you've been displaying lately, very nice touch. I can't believe you got so much done in two cars, that's amazing. The S85 V10 sounds glorious, so thank you again for that, Sreten. Those carbon fiber intake plenums bring out the best in that glorious power plant and look beautiful to boot. I can't believe that climate control gave you so much trouble, that must’ve been aggravating. Overall another excellent addition to your always amazing content, I can't wait to see what else you have in store for us, Sreten. By the way, the new Bendpak two-post lift is yet another fine addition to the dojo, and thanks to Luke yet again for doing another fine install. That guy sure goes above and beyond the call of duty. All in all, this was another enjoyable wrenching episode, thanks Sreten and take care of yourself, we’ll see you in the next chapter!

    You might want to check the blend doors on the X5. If you have heat that doesn’t sound like a plugged heater core. Usually there is no heat when the core is plugged.

    • @andries4561
      @andries4561 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly and the heater core shouldn't prevent the blend doors from opening and closing

    • @aDaWaN
      @aDaWaN ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, blend doors breaking are even a common thing even on Toyota / Lexus products. Water in the heater core will not ruin or clog it, only real risk is freezing or running it long time. I always run pure water after engine swaps and such, only to replace it with coolant after I know nothing is leaking.

    • @albertmerkel5624
      @albertmerkel5624 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, heater core seems unlikely if you have heat unless it's some sort of magical heater core. Looked up the part and it looks normal to me. Gotta be blend doors or blend door actuators. Seems like the actuators in the car are all electric, so could have many of them broken or malfunctioning.

      Just a small story: Some years ago somebody reached out to me with a Nissan Micra (the strange round shaped one). The dude told me that only on the passenger side the air is warm coming out of the vents. on the driver side it was way cooler. I told him that is impossible because of the simpliyity of the construction... just one heater core ... just some pipes directing the air... you know how it works. But when i checked it it was really much colder on the driver side... my last solution was to change the heater core. and after the change everything was fine... because i was so confused why this happened i cut the heater core in half. That was the strangest thing i have ever seen... the pipes were corroded and rusty where the water entered the core until about half way through the core. the pipes did not get the heat into the fins of the core for the first half of the heatercore. so the air directed to the driver had a much larger part of cold air... That was probably the weirdest failure i had to find...

    I'm a A/C technician by trade. You made a big error when filling the oil when changing compressor. The oil is only needed in the compressor. It's actually bad for the rest of the system. Next time, just fill all the needed oil to the compressor. Hopefully you didn't destroy the new compressor this time. I recommend you to use the A/C as much as you can, so the oil can return to the compressor, where it's supposed to be👌

It has been fun watching this car on the channel, because I have literally been through every single issue Streten has encountered. Even this episode, I felt "Ah yes I remember yanking out my dash to do the blower motor." Kudos to Streten though, he thought of a better way to change the starter than I did

    Other than myself, a few peeps i know that i influenced, and before me, my uncle who ingrained this into me,... you're the only other person i know that does the right thing and uses a vacuum when installing or dealing with clean parts of the engine. Like... most other people just stuff their socks in and that's it. It really grinds my gears when something that's not only a minimum to keep things right, but also much easier to do than dealing with damage later on... is not done. Vacuum, a wonder of ancient technology and some mechanics still haven't discovered it. So kudos to you!

    Thanks, just thanks for these videos! It's been though months lately - E39's suspension is collapsing, gotta replace ton of stuff, the dash needs to come out as the blower motor is dead, has anoying rpm drop, so it went today to a shop for troubleshooting, needs brakes, steering wheel retrim and few other small bits, but I'm constantly ill and waiting for summer time, so I can work during hot times. Have a bike going through complete restoration and then I need to change living place due to some other issues. These videos are just pure motivation that I can pull up a lot of work myself, so thanks, just thanks!

    • @spencermaiers8322

      The heater core is a heater radiator. No? If it has heat I highly doubt the core is bad. From water? Seems highly improbable. How wimpy are bmws? I've run plain water in my bmws. I don't think to myself anything bad is going to happen. System always looks clean. How about 1980s iron block bmws filled with rust and still works? I ran plain water and liqui moly radiator cleaner in my 03 x5 for months and pushed off replacing it with coolant.
      The problem lies elsewhere in my opinion.
      I believe with a scan tool you can activate the vents one by one.
      I would see what a scanner says and activate each flap motor on and off and see what is happening if that is avaliable.
      100ml of oil seems just a tad on the high side to me, I would assume mahle says the compressor has a full charge of oil. I see dry oem compressors. And not much in the new ones. And differing suggestions. It's not like the ac system has a dipstick.
      Shop manual does have some oil capacities I believe for each ac component. I doubt any issues there with oil added however more just thinking out loud.

    Are you sure its the heater core thats faulty on the X5? You said yourself that you get properly hot air form the top vents. I'm guessing this all has to do with worn climateflap servos. Had an issue just like this on a 2003 Porsche 955 cayenne with 4 zone climate. Pretty much all the servos were bad/starting to get bad. -and i'm guessing there is no notable fault codes?

    • @M539Restorations
      @M539Restorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not, haha. But I'm running out of ideas. The damn thing has 13 actuators/flaps for the vents under the dash, I played with a few and didn't find the issue.

    • @williamskagen9901
      @williamskagen9901 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@M539Restorations Yeah, same thing with the Cayenne, a bunch of actuators. I went through the same process of repairing the AC, then changing out the climate computer/button panel. Got a replacement good condition servo/actuator box and everything is now working

    • @bazzle592
      @bazzle592 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, my thoughts as well. If there's heat, the heater core is doing its job, but something else is failing to block it out when it's not wanted.

    Your new baseplate 2 post lift is a good purchase. I have 1 myself, no need for the extra steel plate to anchor the columns down BUT doesn't hurt. You can also anchor down the floor baseplate to the concrete in each corner to be more solid.
