Here is a Preview of the Nikon D4 that I made after getting a chance to spend some time with this camera.
There are so many amazing features that have been added to this new DSLR. The ISO capability has gotten better once again and this is the first Nikon Pro camera to take a leap into serious video making territory.
Key Specs Nikon D4
16.2 megapixels FX CMOS Sensor
10 FPS
100-12,800 ISO up to 204,800 in H4
1080p 24/30 Video
720p 60 Video
New WT5 Wireless
6 years later and I still say it's one of the BEST cameras ever made. I love the two I have and would not part with them for anything. They are tough as nails and twice as reliable.
Hi! I'm a vietnamese people & i'm not a photographer_not a pro but when I watch ur videos...you make me really wanna become a pro...though I can't afford for a good camera now & don't know much about photograph but I hope to have one & understand more in future...&& I just wanna say you re amazing...thankyou so much!!!!^^
@PJonezki thanks i really appreciate hearing that. I love the passion behind this stuff and i am looking to move in the direction of longer more informative videos.
@RaboKarabek thanks!!! It makes it easy when its such a cool tool. I am so glad I took notes and actually paid attention un like when i was in school.
@ppyromaniac the new body has been, thus why it would drop in price. But do you need a D4? You have barely even used your d3s.
@Xyb3rTeCh so do you own one or do you just read tech specs?
@myart4 it was the d7000 didnt realize it was doing it until i watched it back.
@dentunes i hear thats a win, im just learning about that stuff.
Thank Jared for the effort for making this video. I truly appreciated every second of it.
Thank you for this review... you are always spot on with your reviews and I'm glad you had the chance to feel out the D4... I have mine pre-ordered through Adorama and am expecting it in February. It will be a perfect companion to the D3s... it's lighter than the D3s, but is the shutter quieter? At anyrate... thank YOU!
@VinceCheong I actually saw test video from the D4 when I was playing with it, I mean real world outside on a frozen lake and such it was amazing esp the 2.7x zoom.
@DrAsh006 no, he got the iso comparison correct. the new camera has better noise control thus you can have a higher iso and it has the same amount of noise that the older camera would have had at a lower iso.
@appacana for me its the video thats putting me over the edge. I do a ton of video now so this is killer.
@eighty4buick different things its always hard to say, they both will be good.
Good job Jared, appreciating all the work you put out for us.
@Edgargraphics1 you are welcome.
@fengtianyuseven get over it it is NeyeKON here in the US.
I just watched 30 minutes of RAW passion for the Nikon D4.
Love your stuff Jared :)
Awesome review, Jared. I saw the press release on the camera a few hours ago and bam, you have a video up. Great work :)
Thanks for that aweseome Preview, one of the few reviews that really takes focus on the important things about a camera!!
First i thought "What the hell is he going to talk 30 minutes about" but you definitely filled it with the right stuff :-)
@geomanv thanks, i busted my ass over the last few days to get this going. Had to wait for the press release to get here but wanted to do a killer job on this one.
I haven't seen you so pumped! Can't wait to see more about it.
WOW I watch the whole thing and did not fall asleep, great job. I have one question, does the d4 have a build in flash and where can I get info on the wt-5a transmitter?
Brilliant preview!!!, hope you had fun with it!
@rocker4x Oh I don't know...maybe to save $1500? (just in case you're unaware, Nikon also announced an 85mm f/1.8 AF-S lens for $499 - I was not referring to the old 85mm lens)
@kauxkaux yes it was.
Hi Jared, Great preview. Want to know if the D4 have the User setting like the D7000's U1 & U2?
Can't believe myself that I watched the whole thing! Best preview what so ever :) wow wow wow
In the 2.5Mpx mode does it shoot continuous at 24fps until the card is full or does it stop after filling a buffer? No one seems to have tested this.
nice video jared, just wondering what are the manual setting the d4 has for video? ...... , does it has gain control or like aperture controls ?
you should post your notes in the description of on your website for us to follow along.
either retyping them or next time take note digitally.
Wow, the D4 sounds amazing, just listening to your excitment about it is great to watch. For now I'm still madley in love with my D7000, but the coming of the D4 opens the gates for me to maybe pick up a 2nd hand D3 body. Looking forward to a review in the coming weeks.
Great video! Very thorough, and I love that you keep an open mind to some of the changes. Thanks so much!
In 2007, Nikon released the D3 digital-SLR camera as its flagship model equipped with the new FX-format CMOS image sensor developed by Nikon... This is from the D4 press release on the Nikon site :)
Hot damn. This is exciting, can't wait to see it in use.
Hey Jared, I just noticed that almost all the time when you were discussing the new features, you were having a high-pitched tone. I can see your excitement. :)
I'm a Canon user, and I really really like the D4. Good preview!
Thank you for the detailed rundown. While it's way more camera then I'll need anytime in the foreseeable future I enjoyed seeing your presentation.
I'm saving up for a Nikon D7000 to upgrade to from my D5000. Do you think it would be smart for me to get? I'm not really sure how or when Nikon releases new cameras but do you think I should wait for the D7100? I'm looking to get more serious with my photography but not ready for a pro body yet because they're too much. I mostly take random shots of what ever, portraits, landscapes, etc. Pretty much everything outside of studio.
@DylanLTZ250 keep in mind this may actually beat the canon to the market by 3 or so months.
@12345glacier The D800 is meant for studio photography and landscape photography. D4 is meant for sports and other general photography.
Jared, you did an w.o.w. preview and low iso sens. is MUST for every pro.3D tracking, wireless, joysticks etc give another dimension in photography and Nikon knows how to cope with the megapixel myth, introducing a PRO Hi-end camera with 16 mp (more than enough for me. Thank God too for 16mp. I shoot RAW too and I want to see the speed that Qxd card saves RAW images in 10fps (FX mode). I 've seen all your videos and I believe Lilly will love this "masterpiece" D4 too...Thanks for everything!
Wow.
This is compelling...almost compelling enough to make me begin thinking about Nikon.
I'll be sticking with my 7D for a while, but this and the 1Dx both sound like AMAZING tools.
Ey Jared, in what kind of compression format does it do video? cause the reason the Canon camera's can't film to long is because of the FAT32 formatted cards in it which can transfer up for a 4GB file at once. so if the Nikon camera's are able to record any longer, they'd need to have another compression format than the .mov h.264 that the Canon's give. Might you be able to figure out?
I have to say you are probably quite good at selling D4, lovely selling skill now you make me want one even I am shooting Canon for years!
Very nice camera and I enjoyed your common sense explanation of its features.
even though at this stage of my photography journey, i'm surely not going to get this, i still found the whole video really informative and cool. thumbs up jared!
Nice review .. i believe our DSLR Film maker will use this D4 as their Big Guns for their big movie .. Can't wait any longer .. must have this NIKON killer gun..
CES show is at my hotel where i work every year and i never go to it, looks like im going to have to make an exception this year and take advantage of some of my jobs perks.
Shit. You've got me hyped into jumping off canon. The newly added video functions and low light performance really has a hold on me. Is the video in low light as good as in photos?
I love the D4, but I still shoot a lot with my D3s as well. Two great Nikon cameras.
Amazing video review, watched the entire thing. Super thorough and cohesive. Thanks!!
Hey Jared, I'm an aspiring cinematographer. I'm considering getting this camera, but the only major question I have is, can you tweak the settings in video. For example, can I adjust the ISO, Shutter speed, Aperture, exposure, saturation, color tone, all that stuff IN VIDEO. I know Canon cameras like the 5D mkII, 7D, 550D, have that feature. I have never seen it in Nikon cameras, is it available in this one?
even though I will probably never be able to get a camera like this, this was a very interesting video, one of my recent favorites on this channel. Im looking forward to getting the D700 or the replacement D800 within the next couple of years.
My only guess is that Nikon does not want to deal with region-specific camera bodies, due to the different frequency bands for radio communication in different countries. I suppose they could add all of them and make it user selectable.
Gotta a question for you jared. I go hiking lots and currently have lowepro 70 aw top loader, works great and can barely hold my d7000 with a lens and a 50mm.
Now this setup is great with a normal backpack but im finding more and more that im getting into more remot areas, where the camera can get damages. i was looking at a osprey talon 33 and have a camera case within it. Do you think this is a good idea. Oh and i dig the new porshe, I just sold my jaguar for a new jeep to keep photograpgy
@eireannsg It's not a downgrade, the D4 is a replacement to the D3S which is a 12MP. I'm sure a replacement for the D3X will come around soon enough.
@JaredPolin Understood, but I think I'd rather wait the 90 days for the 1D X. However, I really really like D4 and I think it will be excellent for Nikon shooters and I cannot wait for to see your shots with it!
What this also means with the crop mode is that proper super 35mm cinema lenses can be used without vignetting. Good job Nikon. Pro videographers who were thinking of going to Canon may now change their minds...
Honest, yesterday me and my friend (who own a D4) shot 10 pics in low light and day light. the 6 had better clearness in the pics. The color was little "stronger" in the D4, but that is easy to fix in Lightroom. the different was that the D4 can make your back pain after a days work with it, and the 6 make you still fresh for the nights party :)
Would like to see the same lens on the D4 versus the D7000.
Once in a while, I am getting blown out of the water
even though I live on top of a mountain
in a photo scenic paradise where even people with a compact
love sharing million dollar views. Awesome footage! Give me more of that! ;)
Your review of the D4 was great as usual, but I'm a novice camera operator and this is completely over my head. Jared thanks for your professional presentation.
Thanks J, nice job. For those that seem not to understand. Many photographers consider themselves artist. As one of those that do, I know we reach a critical point in our craft where the tools we use limit our creative abilities. That in itself is why artist seek out even the most minute advantage, to enable us to take it to the next level regardless of how minute the next level is. An inch can be a mile ! Thanks J I too am looking at the D4 to add to my kit as well.
Thanks for sharing your review and thanks for the sense of humor. Because that's what makes your video more interested to watch.
You are the man Fro! Amazing preview video! Awesome facts! PERFECT! I wish I could get this camera! You are lucky my friend, lucky! One day!
No 1080/60fps ? Kinda surprised at that, overall amazing camera cant wait to see comparisons with the D3X
Jared, could you response? Can you answer to this? :) How do you change AF from single to continuous in D4? And how do you change is it 51 point or 11 point? Do you have to change those things from the menus? And the changing of the metering type is on the dial, next to QUAL, right?
you forgot to mention that while recording vid the user still can adjust the ISO, SS n aperture. how about that for a much cooler cinematic effect! (does canon have this?)
@JaredPolin Jared, the 1Dmk4 only has one joystick, not two. Its a pain in the ass in portrait orientation. Canon has just implemented it for the 1D x. Great preview, looking forward to your hands on as a proud owner :)
Uhm... I talked to Nikon Denmark, yes I live in that tiny tiny country, and they told me the D4 will shoot 98 frames in continuous burst mode before you fill up the buffer? It's on the new Sony XQD cards tho... It's not that long ago btw. I think it was february 13th in Denmark.
@MichaelJordon1 thanks!!!
Raw video.Does this mean that Nikon has step ahead of Canon in video?
Canon guy myself (mainly for video), but gotta give it to Nikon, well played!
Jared, thanks for your review, really interesting and definitely worth watching!
I'm excited for future camera, we are taking bigger and bigger steps with each camera :')
Great job man! I was thinking of skipping the D4 and just stick with the D3S but I think I may just go ahead and upgrade. Thanks!
uncompressed video is a HUGE thing! this actually makes me consider moving to nikon.... cant wait to see what canon would do with the 5D mk 3.....this is a real competition now.....
damn, if i would've watched 2 seconds longer I would've known the compression format. Although seeing that they use h.264 What kind of harddrive format does it use?
jared, do you think nikon can compete now with canon in terms of video recording?
Excited Jared sounds excited.
@JaredPolin Yes I need a D4. My D3s was just a toy to get a hands on demo how to use it and play around. Like you amateurs got to start somewhere, just like preparation for a big exam. Also why should I keep my D3s? It's just going to lose its value when the D4 comes out.Reinvesting it in a D4 I get my moneys worth from my D3s.
@BrianReesePhoto
1Dx has dual CF card slots. I wonder where Canon got that idea?
Can you make a video comparing the D4 vs 1DX? I am wondering about the increased iso on the 1DX. Thanks!
the ISO comparison got me mixed up. did you got it wrongly or am i not seeing your side of your comparison?
The sensor is not made by Sony. It is made by Rennaisance and designed by Nikon. D3's sensor is made by Matsushita, a Panasonic company.
@JaredPolin I have a question about selling the D3s. If I wanted to sell mine to upgrade with only 10,000 actuations and is in great condition/shape with no damage. It looks like it came off the shelf from a camera shop and smells new. Whats the base price I should start at? I posted an ad and many people were offering me $3000-$3200 CAD. I was told that Nikon pro bodies don't lose their value until a new body is released. Is this true?
tis is the kind of your videos i love
I can watch you talk all day. Your the man
@BrianReesePhoto
Hmmm....... 1Dx has dual CF card slots. I wonder where Canon got that idea?
@4Alpha7Kilo Completely agree! I think Nikon has an upper hand for a while, with their D3 series compared to the last few generation 1D's, but compared to this new installment of both bodies, I think the 1D X jumped up higher than the D4.
Great Preview of the D4 but the echoing gets quite annoying after ~10 minutes of video. Something to think about in future videos.
One thing I like about you Jared is that when you don't know something, you say it.
Paul
Great preview Jared :)
i think you switch that iso thing. you said that D4 @6400 is like D3s @ 3200. what does it mean? noise performance or the exposure?
So if the video is available in uncompressed format will it allow for better color correction similar to reds raw video?
i cant wait to get my 1dx and the d4 is gonna be amazing i cant wait to see what new freedoms these cams will give us also im pumped that canon will finaly have a lowlight monster. as far as video goes canon owns the market as far as dslr goes.
@deanmadoo you would want to see my hand written notes? I just kind put them in the trash lol maybe I should give them away,
Why does Nikon dedicate an external function button to Image Quality? The last three bodies that I have purchased I set to RAW and never changed it. Am I missing something or do other photogs change this setting frequently enough to dedicate an external button without having to navigate the menu's to change it? When I am in the field, I do not look at a scene or object and decide that maybe I should change this shot to jpg medium.
Excellent video!
