    @AchilliesWar I understand that as well but don't forget 6400 ISO is nothing to shake a stick at considering where we used to me.

    @froknowsphoto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @I2ecreate yes, born with it, its much better now than it used to be since i had surgery when i was 5. Could you see my eyes shaking in the video?

  • @KimiMotoVlog
    @KimiMotoVlog 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JaredPolin yes, it's about pixel density. so basically, more than 1 'pixel' on the sensor is capturing that 1pixel that would be shown on the video.
    kinda like HDR photos: you create 1 photo by compounding a number of the same photo.

  • @martinaee
    @martinaee 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sx56 It IS 36mp. It's a very different purpose camera though. The D4 will have ULTIMATE low light capabilities which is possible by making fewer pixel sights on the sensor that gather much more light and gather the light much more efficiently. At 12mp the D4 will be unsurpassed in straight-out-of-camera quality and will have superior shooting capabilities for events and such.

    @bassmanTV its not true, they dont have the hdmi uncompressed video options. I am sure they will in the next one. But also where the 5d misses out on auto focus and many other things the nikon still kills with still quality, metering and focus.

  • @froknowsphoto
    @froknowsphoto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @unknownchronicles The echo is not from the microphone or anything added. Its from the size of my place. There are 18 foot ceilings and hardwood floors. I also don't have a lot of stuff up in here

  • @johndanielroos
    @johndanielroos 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JaredPolin True, and don't forget the headphone out, for monitoring the audio levels.
    That has been a deadspot, for alla DSLRs, for far too long, that was missed from the true movie cameras.

  • @markdstump
    @markdstump 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @markdstump Per Dpreview
    "Movies can also be shot at two different crops from the sensor, FX and DX. This makes it easy to vary the field-of-view for grabbing footage, even if you’ve got a prime lens mounted. However, the ‘FX’ size is a significantly cropped version of the full sensor (it’s 91% of the sensor’s width), so the field-of-view will be a little narrower than you’d expect for any given focal length."

  • @froknowsphoto

    Jarad, As always great video. I am thinking for upgrade. I shoot wildlife, mostly birds. So i prefer DX mode then FX for that extra reach. What you think , is D800 for wildlife? or should i go for D7000 or D700 or wait for D400(as u say hypothetical cam)...your response is highly appreciated.

  • @edkwon
    @edkwon 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @firsttknightt I kept my D7000 and bought a used D700 instead of the D800, I didn't want to give up a DX camera so I can get the extra reach for telephoto photography. You should have just kept the crop camera as a back up body.

  • @SLRist
    @SLRist 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JaredPolin - That makes no sense unless you're not using lossless RAW compression, and why wouldn't you? My D700 14-bit RAW files are 12-14MB in size. It follows that the D800 files (lossless RAW compressed) would be somewhere around 40MB each. Unless lossless compression is not an option.

    @MichaelLaing71 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the D800 has actually been finished for a number of months but with the problems in Japan last year, the release was put back. This could well explain why the camera is missing XQD port and a few other features that are in the D4.

  • @orionsbelt0
    @orionsbelt0 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Dombowerphoto Well lets see. The two biggest are auto focus and record times. A true video camera will record as long as you media will hold with no gaps. Color information, dynamic range, smooth zooms, image stabilization (meant for video not photo), battery life in some cases, audio capability and quality, sensor specifically designed for video. Don't get me wrong DSLRs shoot amazing video. I personally shoot with a XF305 and a T3i so I know the pros and cons. Any other comments?

  • @froknowsphoto

    @JaredPolin More pixels should not enhance your video quality, it is how you extract the data from it. Assuming this has a traditional bayer pattern, it really boils down to the debayering process and how fast the data read-out is. I was surprised in the low light though seeing how many pixels this thing has (the more pixels the lower the light sensitivity).

    I have the D4 and D800. It reallly depends on your shooting needs for what is best for you. There is no reason to have two Cadillacs in your garage when you really only drive just one of them.

    @Jarar14 Dont you think that 50MB Raw File is way to much??? In past videos you told a story about a client that wanted you to use a min 18mp camera and you said that mp is not important, what's important is what the camera can make you do, as for quality and low light management...

    I pre-ordered TWO D800 bodies, yes two !!! since its going to my first upgrade to FX , making them a great team while doing my fashion videos and studio work + I got 100€ discount on each if pay instantly, and so I did.. 200€ saved in my pocket , can't wait !
    Also I don't do weddings but it case I will do one, DX mode 6fps with battery grip is still fine, people on wedding don't care about FX DX ...

  • @gajano
    @gajano 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was not familiar with the WT-4 & WT-5 from Nikon until you mentioned it in this video (which is great by the way). Stupid question....is there any reason a person couldn't just use a $99 Eye-Fi card instead of the +$1000 Nikon solution (they appear similar).

  • @martinaee
    @martinaee 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is weird in my opinion too that they didn't implement the xqd format in at least one of the slots for the D800... Not sure how much the xqd format would have helped with that.
    Doesn't matter too much though--- The D800 isn't meant to be a monster fps cam anyway. In my mind MOST of the time if you are shooting more than 4fps anytime you probably aren't really composing much.

  • @Sn0Wiii
    @Sn0Wiii 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JaredPolin I doubt that the D400 is going to be an FX camera as it would leave the D300s without a replacement. Nikon is probably waiting to see what Canon has up its sleeve as it is rumored to produce two new models of the 5D (5D mark III and 5D X) Not saying it would be interesting seeing the D400 as a FX camera with an affordable pricetag

  • @froknowsphoto

    @AchilliesWar
    I've been thinking/asking the same question. Church/wedding lighting is often highly problematic; so unless some proves that the D800 is essentially equivalent to even a D700 at ISO 800 and above, I will continue to scratch my head at the "it's a wedding camera" comments.

    @JaredPolin true, nikons stills are way better than canon's, but i think the 60D and 7D both have HDMI uncompressed, not sure about that cause i never really use the HDMI port :)

  • @TerribleWone
    @TerribleWone 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Higher MP count believe it or not means worse video quality due to the way DSLR produces movies. Rather than scaling down the resolution from the sensor it just skips lines of pixels to generate the 1080p. Because of this I would venture to say the D4 would smoke the D800 at video.

    Best to get a lapel mic or something, I was interested in the long discussion but I couldn't take the strong echo after about 4 minutes. You have like 100x more money and gear than me but I was still able to get a good mic setup for vlog type videos :/

    @Karlzuguttenberg - Good point. So, it makes me wonder why the new 1DX doesn't have a headphone jack. Seriously, if the 5D Mark II's successor doesn't give me headphone love, I am selling my Canon and its L-series glass and switching BACK to Nikon to upgrade to the D4. I won't let Canon force me to downgrade to a 600D so that I can function as a photog-videographer!

    I also use the D7000 and D800 and own a small product studio with my friend how owns a 5d mk2 and a 60d. Out of all those cameras that I want in the studio it is the D800. It is unrivaled unless you go with the Hasslebad H3 and that includes the 1dx and D4.
    PS done an 8 hour wedding and party taking about 800 shots and still had 30% life with 85% of the shots being useable. If you are good enough you shouldnt need 10fps, 4 is a bit slow but get a battery grip 6 is perfect.

  • @ViciousXUSMC
    @ViciousXUSMC 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to get better signal to noise ratio and you wont pick it up, no echo can be even close to the intensity of your direct voice if you have the gain right. Use directional mics in an environment prone to sound reflection as well.
    Just constructive criticism to help you make better videos.

    Thanks very much for this review, caveman people like me appreciate it very much. I've got few questions, I'm kind of lost and I really could use some advice. I've got a Nikon D800 and I'm planning to shoot a low light music video, I want to use slow motion for some of the images so ideally I guess 1920x1080 60fps will be ideal. Does this camera have this option? If not, which one would you recommend me? I've watch few tutorials about it and apparently every time you change your image area settings (FX, 1.2X, DX or 5:4), you should have new options for frame size in movie settings but that's not the case on my camera, I always have the same options ( 1920x1080 30fps to 1080x 720 25fps). No matter which crop option I use, my frame size options does not give me any extras ones as I've seen on other videos. Someone told me I may have some settings activated that may been causing the options not to appear, any ideas? Thanks for your time! ... and I apologies for my bad english. Thanks again!.

    If you want to have a good HD video, you'd be best off with an 8-megapixel full frame sensor. That would provide 2 megapixel (1080x1920) color, post Bayer pattern. An 8-megapixel full frame sensor would also have great low light capability and low noise due to large size of pixels. The D800 would lend itself better to 4K format video, at the cost of low light and noise performance. Anyway, for video I'd still go for 3CCD camcorder, due to better low light performance.

  • @Sn0Wiii

    Interesting preview.. but you have to remember that the D800 isn't a replacement of the D700, but rather a model that sits alongside the D700 (according to techradar). Either way it's an exiting new camera.. and i'm looking forward to see what else Nikon has in store for us.. (come on D400!!)

    I am aiming to get a used D3s because the D4 is too pricey and the D800 doesn't meet the 2 most important things I need in a body(I do sports & photojournalism). Not having fx 5fps was the deal-breaker for me (and considering the speed of the a77 and j1 it seemed pretty possible)
    I want the video too which the D700 doesn't have...

  • @dude157
    @dude157 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you have invested a lot of money in high quality glass but for a DX camera, the D800 is probably the best camera to choose for the transition to full frame. Because of the very large amount of pixels, you can get away with using DX lenses on crop mode and still get great images while you begin to buy FX glass. Most people, including myself would simply not have been able to afford to buy an expensive pro camera, as well as expensive FX lenses all in one purchase. Having enough pixels to utilise DX lenses is not something that should be overlooked.

    There's something that everyone seems to not get is the lower the ISO the better it is for fIlmmakers. 64000 ISO only means more noises for us videographers. Here is another mistake there have done with this camera, if it's for videographers...What happen to the flip screen. You would think that Nikon would learn from Canons mistake when they came out with the 5D. Well at lease Canon fix it when they came out with the 60D. Which i'M LOVING THIS CAMERA.

    I have a D700, at least they updated a few things that i really wanted: 100% viewfinder!, better auto-focus... they probably fixed annoying setting banks (hopefully). I hope they improved the computer tethering because they are lagging behind canon with their SDK, and not being able to shoot continuous highspeed / bracket without the mirror constantly slapping up and down was really stupid on the D700... I hope they fixed that to for some of us who like HDR for some situations. Will see...

  • @thomasjbrablec

    I think the stats of the D800 are great, but I still don't really get the purpose of the D800E. I understand that without the filter you can get slightly higher resolution (according to what they said on WhatDigitalCamera), but your shots can suffer from moire effects. It's no problem for me, I don't have the money to get a camera like that. It looks beautiful though, so solid.
    I hope Nikon announces a D7100 soon, I'm planning on getting a D7000 in the summer and I'd be happy if it was cheaper.

  • @AidanZealley
    @AidanZealley 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your D40 doesn't produce 75mb RAW files, that's the difference. At 4fps the D800 is handling 300Mb of data every second, which is pretty amazing if you ask me and requires an immense amount of processing power over what the D40 has.

    36Mp just seems too much to me for most use. I use my D700 semi-professionally and have a Canon crop body for video. I waited for the D800 to get great video and to use my pre-existing FX lenses rather than buying expensive lenses for the Canon just to shoot video. But adopting a 36Mp sensor is rather expensive. You need a bag full of 32GB memory cards and even more HDD space at home. So very doable, but nevertheless a needless expense seeing how 18Mp or so would suffice for most D700 upgraders.

    in terms of iso performance, can you tell me if D700 is better or D800? I'm shooting both the landscape and portraits. I wonder if it's worth to upgrade to D800 from D700 since D800 has video capability but lower burst rate.

    Low light photography is why I use a D700. I'm thinking a used D3s rather than a D800, although I'll be waiting until I've seen some images taken with the new kit before I make my decision. After all, I could just stick with my D700 and take my family on a summer holiday...
