Taiwan again denied on Tuesday helping the losing side in Cambodia's violent coup saying it had no knowledge of orders to shut down the office of its representative in Phnom Penh.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister John Chang said there was no truth to Hun Sen's allegations that Taipei had provided arms and funds to deposed First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
Hun Sen - who staged the coup on July 5 - has accused his rival of colluding directly with Taiwan's representatives and gangsters from the island.
However on Tuesday Cambodia's latest strongman attempted to reassure Taiwanese investors that they were not implicated in the alleged incident.
Cambodia's coup leader Hun Sen announced on Tuesday that Taiwan's Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Phnom Penh would be closed for a week.
The representative office handles relations in the absence of official ties, since Cambodia recognises Taiwan's diplomatic rival, China.
Hun Sen said the office would remain closed while officials investigated allegations that a two-star Taiwanese general posted to the office provided money and technology to his rival - deposed First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh.

"It's not revenge against Taipei, but it is measures to find who is really involved in this incident."

Hun Sen stressed that Taiwanese investors were not involved in the investigation.
    SOUNDBITE: (Khmer)
"Because Taiwanese companies here have no involvement with this incident, we advise that they should continue their business operations as normal. But as for the representative office, it is the representative of the authority of Taiwan, and the general involved in this incident, he should return to Cambodia to resolve this problem."
SUPER CAPTION: Hun Sen, Cambodia's coup leader
Hun Sen said the latest developments would not affect Cambodia's relations with China and tried to explain why Taiwan's representative office had to be closed.
    SOUNDBITE: (Khmer)
"As for the embassy of the People's Republic of China, that is enough to provide protection for all the Chinese people doing business in Cambodia that have come from all over the world. (English Translation.) We had to cut a piece of the body so that the cancer would not spread to the rest of the body."

Taiwan has one of the largest foreign business communities in Cambodia.
However Taiwanese businesses were among those looted by Hun Sen's troops during and after the July 5 coup, causing (m) millions of dollars in losses.
