  • Although the incidence of kidney cancer has increased dramatically over the last few decades, research led by Johns Hopkins urologists is showing many of these patients can be followed safely without the need for immediate surgery. In light of these findings, The Brady Urological Institute began the Delayed Intervention and Surveillance for Small Renal Masses (DISSRM) Registry, following patients with small, localized kidney tumors (4 centimeters or smaller, and confined to the kidney), to avoid surgical intervention.

    This is an excellent resource for anyone diagnosed with a small renal mass. Patients, on finding out they have a tumor in their kidney, are frequently very frightened. This video gives them information that should give them some comfort and at least an understanding that they have time to consider all the options available to them.

    Nice video but unclear what the advantage is of AS except for costs and risk of an operation. A small chance (1%) of cancer spreading (very bad news) is still very bad news as this type of outcome is more important than the small chance. Why take the risk of leaving the small renal mass as it is?

      I think it has to do with maintaining a functioning kidney without the risks associated with an operation or anesthesia.

    • @DebraGottsleben

    • @DebraGottsleben
      @DebraGottsleben 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yassmina6220 not necessarily. There is a type of benign renal mass called an oncocytoma that looks like rcc on scans. Hopkins has developed a scan called a sestamibi scan which can help detect oncocytomas. Are you in NYC? Could you travel to a different city? I'd recommend either Dr. Alex Kutikov in Philly or Dr. Phil Pierorazio in Baltimore. If you are hesitant about surgery see if they will do a biopsy and also ask about the sestamibi scan. If you are able to travel see about getting an appt. with either of these two drs. Thinking of you. Hope all goes well.
