Yates getting back on the bike after that crash is insane. No way to implement a concussion protocol like in other sports because people need to get back to the bunch as soon as possible. UCI really should consider mandating those crash accelerometers on helmets. Hit a certain g-force, and you're done for the day.
From what I understand rotational accel/decel is particularly predictive of concussions (initially based on Virginia Tech research with accelerometers in American football helmets), so not as straightforward as just measuring straight G-force deceleration. It can be done, but somewhat depends on size and whether this can integrate safely and lightly into a bicycle helmet, compared to a (much larger) football helmet. I could see something like this having real value to consumers (not just racers), but with the downside of added complexity and monitoring.
I think it'd be nice if they allowed riders who undergo concussion protocol to continue on in the race the next day without finishing the stage they crashed on if it's shown that they didn't sustain an injury. Obviously this would have to come with a time penalty, but they could still go for stages & help their team.
Can't believe his own team didn't pull him out after that head slam🤕... He was definitely concussed the way his head whip-slapped the tarmac at such a high speed 🚅 .... Helmet saved him from bleeding, not from concussion!!
@@markehrlich7534 in the moment/minutes after the crash would the team have even seen the footage? Very challenging to make the call in the moment if the rider thinks they can continue they will, despite it seemingly being an obvious concussion. The solution is UCI has to implement a stronger protocol to take the decision away from the injured rider in the moment. The goal has to be safety and reduced CTE risk for the athletes.
What no one is saying about Decathlon/Ag2r is that they have obviously has a team-wide pickup of watts for this year because they no longer have the "ugliest bibs in the world" performance penalty of previous years. It is great seeing Ben O'Connor having a great start to the season!
WHY ARE WE LETTING THESE ATHLETES CONTINUE WITHOUT MORE ADEQUATE CONCUSSION TESTING?! the danger Yates poses to others is astounding and the doctors have a duty to protect theirs and other riders from this. it shouldnt take Yates on his own volition to pull out with a concussion. EDIT: we should also refrain from lionizing and glorifying those who keep going even though they are severely injured, or even worse, don't know they are Injured because their doctors are cowards and wont do their job.
Yate´s crash is one of the hardest I've seen in a while, I flinched when I saw it. Hope he takes his time and recovers well. On another note, Ben and Decathalon were on fire!
Really not acceptable to have riders get back on with a concussion. Not even a new helmet! If he had another crash right after, his goose would have been cooked.
Loving the content @LanterneRougeCycling - this season has me really excited. I hope Yates recovers really quickly, that crash could have been super nasty.
2 things from this stage, I might be making stuff up but it looks like O'Connor went to his radio right after Bjerg hypothetically told Vine he was done. I know it's a Km later but I am choosing to believe O'Connor was watching Bjerg like a hawk to find the moment he started to crack to send Prodhomme up Yates looked like Bardet from a couple years ago at the tour, cannot believe they let him back on the bike thank god it was a desert highway and not a twisty tiny European street with furniture.
poor yates, UCI and the teams need to figure out how to keep the riders safe, And for the love of god, if you take a hit to the helmet you should change the helmet as a default! As a non medic I don't know the best way to identify when they should pull out a cyclist, but as a viewer I find it really disturbing that a sport I love to watch seems to come at the cost of people being injured, I hate watching that. As much as I wish the riders felt more empowered to say 'I need to stop' we can't trust someone coursing with adrenaline and used to tolerating a lot of pain to recognise I need to stop.
No one should continue to ride with a concussion, Yates should have been pulled from the race asap!! Why is there still not enough awareness for this and no real working concussion protocol🫣. Remember Küng at the European Champs TT....
That was a crazy crash, crashing in the complete opposite direction that you are riding is not a good look. Thankfully looks like it was only concussion related so we should see him . That must've been a crazy whiplash for that to happen. Not surprising he was allowed to get back on compared to Kung's TT crash. Upon second look the helmet took the brunt of the damage with no cosmetic damage to it. Dec-AG2R must be happy with their solid roster. Not nearly as prolific as big teams but still posting up solid results. Really happy for them.
Have seen it before though not from memory on a big climb. Nicely done though. Yates should never have have been allowed back on the bike after a clear head strike. That he stopped of his own accord is laudable.
Hi, You might be able to tell us: - Has there ever been a time when two Australians finished first and second in a MOUNTAIN top stage of a world tour cycling race?
What your think that vine can win if he focus on gc instead of being a stage hunter and a top domestique? He’s been improving a lot since he joined uae, even his TT improved though. He could’ve easily get a top 3 at giro or vuelta
Yates new crash dummy for high G impact rig at Virginia Tech. Why oh why did they let him get back on. Sponsor pressure? Machismo? So sad bet he’s one sick puppy tonight!
They need to sort out their concussion protocols in cycling. A friend of mine was knocked out cold in the Tour of Britain and rode on. To this day she just laughs saying she has absolutely no memory of the stage at all. She’s literally unconscious on a pavement on camera.
Ill say i dont necessarily blame the team or doctors for letting him get back on, how are you supposed to assess how hard he crashed when youre in a car 500m back or more when it happened. Footage shows how hard it was but you dont have that available instantly. That being said, as a rider sometimes you gotta go oh well fuck that was bad im out. Im glad he pulled the plug eventually but that period between the crash and the retirement is really risky for everyone.
Ditto to all the comments about Yates resuming and a reminder to all riders to keep looking forward. We are seeing too many crashes where riders are looking down or behind them. There's a definite need for the UCI to put rider welfare first. They need to come up with a formula to allow time for a concussion test which does not overly penalise the rider if they are able to resume racing.
Seems like the UCI only has rules in place for conserving the status quo. No long socks, no inward hoods. Rider faceplants into the tarmac at 30 mph? Get right back on that bike. That's what we did back in the 90s! Don't be such a baby! Who do you think you are? Damn kids!

How is Adam Yates top 5 GC rider in the world? Roglic, Pogacar, Vingegaard, Evenpoel, Kuss. He may be somewhere in top 10, but there is real competition even for that (Carapaz, Mas, Simon Yates, Hindley, Thomas, Almeida, Bernal, ...). I get it, he is very good, but he's never won a grand tour and I don't think he's ever been even close to that.
3rd in tour last year plus various wins and podiums in smaller one week stage races throughout the years. Whereas Evenepoel 12th in vuelta and DNF in Giro. if you put them all in the same race Yates might not be top 5, but he's definitely among best of the rest.
@@jwarmerdam7578 Well, as for the wins in stage races, he only managed to win seven of them (including two major tours) throughout his career. Evenepoel is 7 years younger and has 5 more GC victories than Yates, including a grand tour. I don't like Evenepoel - who does? - but he is a real contendor for grand tour victories. On the other hand, Adam Yates is only a real contendor for grand tour podiums (so far he has one 3rd place out of the 12 grand tours he did in his career) - he is good, but not great.
