Very smart of Neilson to pull the ripcord in the first 20k based on what was going on up front. I think MVDP and WVA have both been victims of their own strengths in this tour. They don't employ enough guile, don't show enough weakness, and stick out like sore thumbs, waiting to get isolated and attacked. Maybe solo strategies work in CX, but not on long, hot tour stages. No matter how strong your legs. Even so, I find it more exciting to see surprise and variety in the stage winners' list.
I had the same thought about those 2, victims of their own strength. I'm just a viewer and most days I turn on the tv wondering "What are Wout van Aert and MVDP doing today?" so I can only imagine how close their actual in-race competitors monitor them.

Gutted for both MVDP and WvA. MVDP managed to get to the breakaway, but it was too much, WvA would have matched Izaguirre on that climb, but nobody wants to go in a breakaway with him...
Also for Mattheo Jorgensen, he did so much work today and didn't get rewarded. Especially at the end, nobody in the group was relaying or putting any work in to try and catch up and win the stage except for him and the jumbo guy. And then after trying to attack like 10 times he finally broke away with another rider (who never did a single relay at the last 20k), and then got out sprinted by him and lost 2nd place.

Also worth noting that when he dropped Pogi in the first mountain, it was mostly because Pogi got stuck out of position and caught behind traffic. By the time he could react, Jonas already had 20m.
The PCS live stats were very misleading today. For a very long time it grossly misrepresented who was actually in the yellow jersey group. Kept showing like 8 riders when it had actually reformed into a big group behind the final breakaway.
Jonas and jumbo are riding like Tadej is already in yellow. It's either a great bluff, or Jonas really isn't confident about holding off the Pog in the mountains.
I suppose it's something like the front group of riders that aren't doing some sort of breakaway/attack. Everyone in front of the peleton is either a satelite that waits there for a teammate to attack, closes the gap to him and then do some work to drag him along to make his attack a bit easier or a rider that is trying to win the stage.
When all the riders begin the stage together, that's the peloton. As the group splits up, you might have a breakaway with say 20 riders (which is a big break), and then the peloton which is wherever the largest group is on the road at any given time. You can also have things like the "yellow jersey" group if they happen to get separated from the pack.

Could it be that JV is trying to beat Pogi on fatigue resistance? That might be somewhat underdeveloped given his buildup. Even though Jonas will get tired too, it might be benificial to make a stage hard before some bigger mountain stages.
I think that's precisely what they're doing. The high pace affects everyone and that's when Jonas pulls ahead. Pogi will keep winning smal victories of 15-30 seconds while Jonas needs those big drops where he gains multiple minutes on Pog. That can only be achieved with high paces.
The start of this stage was great 😂 I just wish WVA could've snuck in the break somehow. Maybe my daughter could send him a harry potter invisibility cloak 🤔

Why? His job as day like to day are either keeping Pogacar´s wheel or attack to take further time. The break forming. If he's in, I'm in: th-cam.com/video/hf_7xAX_fBE/w-d-xo.html
I love jonas but the way he has been riding is pure stupid and amateur mistakes and it will cost him big time he just lost the tour for himself.pogacar is so cool and calm and collected he will strike and strike hard.
Pogacar is so cool and collected that he was sprinting for 15th place today and 2 days ago he was dropping his own teammates while personally trying to bridge the gap to the breakaway. Admit it, they are both madmen.
le Tour de France has lost his soul long ago...
I feel like WVA last year would have gotten away by himself last tour
Tour De E.P.O.
I can't believe sheep still wearing masks. Even though there is no more pandemic. Just speechless.....
@janbregar2561 Here you can see again

A 'peloton' of FOUR riders? That's hilarious, mate! 🤣
Why is the race becoming so crazy? What's the price that Teams will pay for all these uncoordinated attacks?
It's fascinating and exhilarating to watch... 🤗
