So thankful I found your channel. Never before have I known of let alone seen these races. Yes, I live in the US, where sadly cycling is not given the coverage it deserves. As a cyclist I have always given it back to the dullards who are US football fans. A football game is about fourteen minutes of actual physical activity!
Just for context, thirty years ago in the USA we had to wait about three months for World Cycling Productions to release these race videos on VHS, which we would have to borrow from the lending library at the bike shop on a first come, first serve basis. The entire stage race would be on one tape, two for the grand tours.
Pog seemed to have the measure of both Jonas and Remco at last year's Tirreno Adriatico. What a difference a year makes. Both Jumbo and Quickstep have obviously invested heavily in scientific training methods to raise the level of their leading men towards winning World and Grand Tours. But if there is any one who seems to relish a challenge, it is Pog. And, hopefully, he will have learnt from his mistakes during the TdF and control his impulsiveness and natural desire to respond to each and every attack.
Man, investing in scientific training methods isn’t what makes the difference. Pog is just more capable of being in form for a longer period of time than for example Jonas. The windtunnel isn’t gonna make Jonas climb faster.
@@cincydooley That's not the point Magnus is making, he's saying that Pog doesn't peak as high as Jonas has the potential to, but perhaps because he's a bit heavier Pog can sustain a very high level of form for a long time (e.g. his win at Il Lombardia later in the season). I disagree, because we don't really have any way to analyze Pog's form after March last year because he essentially fell off the face of the earth. I think Pog peaked in spring, then peaked too late again in the latter half of the season (or, perhaps, the competition at Il Lombardia is not as fierce as Le Tour...).

I said it before and I'll say it again: those descent finishes are the dumbest and most boring endings to a race. I absolutely do not understand why organisers keep putting them in their races. It's super unsafe and also very anticlimactic in my opinion.
Because mountains don't pay the organisers finishing money, but towns in the valley do. Usually I agree, for example it really killed the Mont Ventoux stage in the 2021 Tour where Vingegaard dropped Pogacar, then lost all of his advantage because the downhill was good surface, not a lot of sharp corners and a lot of wide road. So it was advantage to the chasing group who worked together against the solo rider. But descents like this, which really test the DH skills of the riders, they are pretty awesome IMO. Big races should be about testing all of the skills of the riders, not just climbing and TT.
@@andrasszabo1570 Towns on top of mountains do so too, they just need to find the right ones ;) You are right about top riders being supposed to be able to do it all. I am not against descends in general, just about the finish being too close after one. If there's 3 mountains on a stage, there's at least 2 descents, so enough time for skilled riders to try and make a difference. Example: Pidcock on the Alpe d'Huez Stage. Made a big descent attack and was able to profit from that afterwards. He was rewarded for his risk. But if you do a big mountain stage and then make the GC riders fight downhill, it is a different scenario. Because they are more or less forced to take risks if they don't want to lose their target which many train for their entire season. See Pogacar and Vingegaard in the same year. Attacked each other in descents with almost fatal results.
@@MrRhino4U But if you're going to test the descending skills of GC riders, you have to put the finish after one. Otherwise it's diluted into group dynamics on the flat afterwards, which is more frustrating rather than interesting and exciting like a pure downhill IMO. It's a nice theory that with 3 mountains in a stage riders can try to make a difference on the first 2 downhills, but in practice it doesn't work like that, it's counterproductive in fact. You can't make as much difference on a descent as a group can't grind down on the flat. So GC riders never try something like that unless they're in a desperate situation, so there's little point in stages like you describe where there is distance between the finish and the descent, especially when a domestique can be there at the end. Pidcock was only rewarded for his risk because he wasn't a GC rider so they didn't pull him back. But why must only stage hunters be rewarded for taking a risk? Why mustn't GC riders have the option? They are mature enough to ride within themselves downhill, same as uphill, like the Schlecks or Thomas did. You seem to have watched a different race. If you search up 2022 Tour de France stage 18, you'd see that Pogacar and Vingegaard didn't attack each other in the descent. The Dane didn't need to, Pogi couldn't. They both just slipped after locking their rear wheels out of a corner at moderate speed. Jonas didn't even fall, all he did was unclip. If that's almost fatal, then there shouldn't be any races on the road, should they?
@@andrasszabo1570 They didn't attack each other, Pogacar descended very aggressively, which is why Vingegaard made a mistake. Later, Pogacar slipped down.
