This was Wout's day. Wout taking a win in yellow with Jumbo on his chest will be worth /loads/ of publicity to Jumbo across the Netherlands and Belgium. Wout and MvdP are big stars and well-known outside of cycling. Publicity for Jumbo-Visma with Wout winning stuff is great for the sponsor. Getting Wout a stage win in the early stages was no doubt a team goal, simply for the publicity. And doing it in the yellow jersey even better.

And then here at 3:02 INEOS move to the front on the decent, to stop the Jumbo train as they expect what will happen to keep riders within the front of the race to disrupt the Jumbo plan, I think it was good race craft from INEOS to break it up when they don't have a rider to compete for the stage, non of the commentators mentioned this...
Jumbo is pretty much always in that position in the final 30-40kms of a stage. So them sitting there certainly was not a sign they would do it, but they do were in the right position to do it :)
Yeah of course, to protect their GC. But the profile of the stage and maybe not wanting another bunch sprint made their decision from the start of the day I think.
Right move. They gain 25-30 secs on peloton but massively increase chance of a stage win with out or Jonas. Time gain is nothing in the overall GC for Jonas
Good decision making by WvA: had he waited for Jonas, GC teams would all have chased pedal to the medal. Even if they didn't catch them, they would have carried Yates with them, who would not have helped one bit obviously, and then he would have jumped them on the line, with his more than decent sprinting abilities
There's a big if in waiting for Yates and jonas. All the other GC teams would have chased. Theat means bora, UAE, baharain. Then sprint teams, alphecin, internachey, lotto etc. Gruphama might also chase. This could make it difficult for them. So i guess it's a diffucult call. On the other hand, if those three started pacing, we might have seen panic mode with pogacar and bunch splitting to further pieces.
In the last two stages of the 2021 TdF, WVA finished 1st and 1st. So his last six stage placements have been 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 1.

On the other hand, Pog was isolated for a little bit and Yates and Jonas are both good engines. A 10 second gap on Pog forces his hand more if Jonas attacks on later stages also. WVA did win the stage in the end so can't be too critical.
Wout is an absolute machine
If he waited for Jonas no chance to win anything as they will have chassed them like crazy! Good choise from Wout!
Great analysis! thx!
Amazing sprint by Philipsen yet again, the pure pace I feel like he's the fastest man of the bunch but the positioning just lets him down time and time again
just screamed here after this bird sound.
Thanks for the videos, I can't watch all the stages and love your work!!
I only saw WVA during 10 km with a solo that kept a big group of cyclists behind him. That is my opinion. Wout is a fantastic Belgian cyclist !!
Luke Rowe: Podcast Co-Host.... Love it
Which podacst is it, though?
@@damiangruszecki7733 Watts Occuring
Boring stage till Jumbo Visma decided to flex some muscle.....WvA is something else and Vingegaard was very smart for not trying to go along since that wouldn't have worked!!!
He just couldnt follow
@@LeZinZin95 he could follow just fine. Just chose to let Yates do all the work and sucked his wheel the whole time.
Btw, that’s what he’s going to do to Pogacar with but with Roglic instead of Wva
@@frankburn6312 In the post race interview Jonas said he could not hold WvA's wheel.
@@LarsRyeJeppesen he wasn’t on Wva’s wheel, was it?
That was the obvious plan for Jo as to be dragged home. It shows as the other two jv riders shut down the peleton as best they could
I'm not the greatest fan of bikeracing, but am very impressed with your work of editing, condensing and explaining what happened. Also your rapidfire never-miss-a-beat style commentary shows your thorough analysis of the course. How many hours go in one of these videos?
1.5-2.5 hours start to finish
@@LanterneRougeCycling I just read that you quit your dayjob to do this full time. I wish you great success!
The moment Van Aert took over, dropping the last riders with Yates and Vingegaard into a TT without having a chance to recover whatsoever.. absolute beastmode 🔥🔥
With only a gap of 15-17 seconds at the finish line I think wout did well to not wait for jonas and secure his win. The gap they had on pog was too small amyway
Baltimore Ravens approves this win.
Seemed like WvA caught the whole Peloton flat footed by breaking away. The chase never got organized, esp since most of the head of the pack was JV guys gumming up the works. Looked like great racing as well as ridiculous athletic work by Wout.
Pulled the flapping celebration, then made sure to tell the interviewer the the Yellow Jersey “gives you wings” while wearing his Red Bull helmet. NBC guys either missed it or pretended to…
Seems like real hardcore cycling people are more understanding about Philipson’s screwup? I guess maybe if you’re in the pack with your head down and no radio, & expecting a bunch sprint, it’s kind of understandable to think you’ve just won. Still I’m sure he wishes he hadn’t done the Superman pose.
Probably the right call in the situation. Would have loved to have seen what could've happened if Roglic and Thomas were slightly further forward and didn't have spend energy going round dropped riders. There might have been potential for a 5/6/7 man Ineos/Jumbo TTT to put a bit of time into Pogacar?
I definitely think he should have waited but wow that team attack was so beautiful.
What a finish by WVA. Top.
G said in his podcast that the bikexchange guy dive-bombed the corner and pushed him and Roglic a bit out of position. He goes through the whole climb with Rowe so worth a listen.
Wout did the Yellow Jersey proud today.
I watch the whole replay but still come here to see what Lanterne Rouge has to say.
Impressive solo motoring WVA. I think he did not have to wait for Jonnas. This was show time man😅👌
Did my Baltimore Ravens just get a shout out?? I'd love to see Wout show up for the Maryland Cycling Classic in September and knock the whole field into the Inner Harbor. It'll be a hilly one.
If wout can claim the green jersey early, then he can support more in the hills, so one of the aims gets sorted for jumbo.
Hey LR I find it weird nobody is really talking about the PolkaDot is because non of the teams are interested in it. It almost seems if nobody else is fighting for it, the proudness of acquiring isn’t there.
The polka dot jersey is the most interesting in the TdF for me. Being the King of the Mountains in the Tour de France is the most impressive for me.
@@outtatrex I get what you mean, but is it really an achievement when nobody else competing for it? For example last week my a local rider join a RR he got podium but there was only 2 riders in the field. He was so happy he got podium, to be fair he could’ve been out there all day he would had still got podium since theres 3 spots in podium and 2 riders only.
@@outtatrex By the way GC is more impressive. Anyone can climb, the EF rider won’t win the TDF even if he wanted to.
Wout is simply amazing
Loved Wout's celebration.
Luke Rowe’s team name detailed at 3:06 in your pointer graphic as Podcast Co-Host 😆
That was a very impressive sprint by Jasper. He came from a long way back and passed a lot of people through small gaps Should still have covered that a bit lantern.
I seems that the clear shot at the stage win trumps tiny GC differences. But yah incredible and clear demolition of the peloton by Jumbo dudes.
no idea if that was the right call at the top of that tiny climb for jumbo. point for admitting im clueless?
Is it wise for so many from a GC targeting team to be using so much energy ?
if they’re clean, that move was silly. if they’re doped, then they’ll be able to keep doing it.
I believe if WVA had waited for Vingegaard, the GC would have pushed for catching them. I think it was a deliberate Jumbo-Visma move.
Jumbo Visma - Schlurp Schlurp! Loving the coverage. Also nice to hear Ravens get a mention 💜
that was pretty beautiful to watch
The shot at 2:45 The 6 Jumbo Riders in position, It was obvious at this point what was going to happen and non of the commentators called it.
7:03 lmfao, that sound effect 😂
Wout goes for yellow in Paris!
No green
Belgium going doing well. I m not looking my favourite Peter Sagan in front sprint.
@7:03 What. Is. That?
Benji was on Belgian tv yesterday, it was a bit weird hearing him in dutch
2:18 -- "Par la Côte" -- here, côte doesn't mean the hill, but the "coastline" :-)
Too funny commentary on the finish today 😂
10k full gas !!!!! Insane effort.
