I know I am late coming in, but I thought I would add a couple of points from my experience in RS classic. I started probably soon after Wild was added to the game and wearing full rune would get you a following of people asking for help and money in the game. A time when blue party hats were 20k and I laughed at the guy trying to sell it.
Character creation: when I started there was only 3 'classes' the Warrior, Wizard, and Ranger, and they still operated the same as described in the video.
Mining/woodcutting: from what I remember you had to use the axe on the Trees to even attempt to cut it down even after failures. Same for mining, but mining was extra tedious because ALL of the rocks were grey and looked the same. The 'prospect' option on rocks was actually useful for finding out which ores were there. This caused extra frustration as you had to time when you would start mining which rock and I ran circuits where I would mine the coal and then a few iron while waiting for coal to respawn, but if you didn't know the respawn times then you wasted a lot of effort on failed attempts for an empty rock. PS you could fail prospecting rocks and I think the ore had to be in the rock at that time to get a success at prospecting so overall mining was THE WORST skill to train.

i think the reason i got 99 mining first in osrs, was coz it was always a dream of mine to have gih mining and mine rune and sell it and brag about it. :P

I started in '05 and it took me a months to get Iron Armour 😂
I was a noob then, and I'm a noob now (osrs). I don't even know how I managed to level up lol, but I still manage to have fun. However, I wish I could've played classic back in the day. It sounded so interesting (from all the stories I've read)

I remember the never end battle. It was a duel between to guys. both high level but their stats were 1 attack 1 strength and 60Plus defence... so they had the dragon med helm and full rune (chain body) Anyways one had a battle staff and the other i believe just had an iron battle axe... there was a huge crowed around them and after awhile i got tired and logged off.. i have never been able to find out what happened with the battle

Hey bro, like this series a lot. I was a legit old old school player... started playing right about after Varrock. I remember when Falador was added to the game! Additionally, I was one of the founders of the Runescape Trivia Team. We actually invented the concept of drop parties, so it was pretty cool coming back to the game to see they made a drop party room. Made me feel pretty special, even though nobody believes me when I tell em about it (it's hard to find people who were actually around back then).
As far as PVP vs non-PVP... there was a period of time where there were different servers, and your choice would determine which servers you were on... so, pvpers would play on a different world from carebears. You could only switch a maximum of 3 times before your account would be locked into one or the other, permanently. I feel like most people played on the PVP worlds... it was just so much fun. I will tell you this: There is something to be said for a game that is PVP everywhere... really helps deal with bots, and makes even simple things like mining/smithing a whole lot more exciting. Especially when there was no item bank, and you only kept your 3 most valuable items on death! See the crap-ton of guards near all the banks and stuff... those guards would actually break up a fight and aggro an aggressor... they were put in to deter pvp-ing in hotspot areas. Like the general store, believe it or not. Nobody uses it now, but the general store was HUGE back then. Because there was no Grand Exchange, often the best way to get gold for your items was to sell them to the stores. The general store would give less money, but would buy anything, and often would have interesting stuff for sale. However, it could be a deathtrap, as oftentimes clans would come in, close the doors (and continue closing them so people couldn't escape) and slaughter everyone inside!
Also, before the GE, the economy was very interesting, because there wasn't certainty (even after tip.it started publishing more standardized prices for things). You could trade with people, and eventually they added trade certificates so you could trade a large quantity of items. If you were buying items, you could expect to pay more (not less) the more you wanted of a particular good. For instance, if you wanted to train your smithing, buying 10,000 steel bars would cost you way more than 1,000! There were massive amounts of people who just flipped and merched in Varrock Square, by the fountain, similarly to the grand exchange today, but it was a much much more lively place, as you actually had to interact with real people if you wanted to do business outside of the shops.
Forget chopping trees and starting fires... if you wanted to train smithing, before there was an item bank, you had to mine the ore yourself (and not get killed), smelt it, and smith it, and hopefully survive long enough to sell it to a general store, or in varrock, or at a specific goods shop. The famous player Bluerose13x got around this by getting a team of friends run her bars, and was eventually the first person to be able to make rune items (when those came out). Old School Runescape is definitely EZScape compared to classic, and I honestly wish some elements of that early game still persisted. Particularly, I was so disappointed when they introduced the Wilderness (basically, because most people were playing in PVP, people wanted to be on the PVP world, but got mad about all the PVP). Although I haven't played Deadman Mode, it's pretty similar to the environment of classic, although is probably more pvp-centric. Classic was the true 'unsteady peace,' since many people, including myself, were mainly skillers, but were always prepared to do battle.

I remember the falador riots! PVP being banned! Trade being restricted, the scams couldn't be done, noobs ran amuck, profits and morale were low. My clan EOP was the largest f2p and p2p clan pre eoc, i know fluxy is out there still running some shackled version of it. I miss this game so much, castle wars was actually fun and people spammed their emojis to turn into rabbits and what not. I think my first ever event was for the skeleton costume. I met zezima in edge bank and went to his 99 Construction party, good fucking times my guys. The best of my gaming career.

    • @HansLandaNaranja
      @HansLandaNaranja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I used to merch all the time. Hopping worlds, trying to buy rune essence, coal, yews,... in banks and then hop again and sell in bulk. Later on I went to fally park and started merching barrows armor. Basically you just had to look around and see where there was to much supply, buy up all the pieces below price, make sets and sell above once demand started rising. You could usually time these things (when people go to bed, come from school,...)
You always had to type a lot, trade a lot and that made you careless after a few hours. I got scammed pretty often. But I still made more money merching then I would've any other way.
There was a lot of player interaction and I made many friends just by standing at banks, talking to people, buying and selling stuff. Ive made friends back then whom I still talk to.

I started playing Runescape in 2001. I Was 12. I managed to be online for the mask drop event and the scythe drop event for halloween and Santa hat drop event for Christmas. I have a vivid memory of the events such as prices and drop locations. I also was online during the pink party hat duplication fiasco and wound up being given a duplicated phat before dropping it when I found out what happened. The only thing I have to show for my time playing back then is a scythe on my rs3 main account that I now currently still use on OSRS.

These may meld together a bit between classic and OSRS:
I remember the PVP days! I was a huge noob at the time. I always ran from Lumbridge to Varrock bank to town for fear of getting killed when originally leveling up. I also remember being afraid that the multiple level 10 Vikings would overwhelm me so I avoided barbarian village on the way to Varrock. I remember even being killed by a Lumby goblin when I wasn’t paying attention. At first I was constantly PKed and people wouldn’t even bother to pick up my junk (raw beef and bronze armor, I think I even had my wooden shield for an embarrassingly long time).
I remember the first time I played tutorial island on the update it took me over an hour- looking back I think it mainly involved making a fire so I have no clue why it took me so long. I don’t think I understood how to walk around.
I remember Lumby castle and the church were just two blocks but they felt like home.
And of course for OSRS you have to have fast fingers to repeat your text while seeking items. I would just type the same message over and over again.
I remember one of my favorite spots to level up was in Al Khalid castle because there was a cabbage there so I thought I was very clever using that as food while I killed guards.
Classic was the best. Although the one update I absolutely loved was getting a cat for the first time. When that news dropped about Gertrude’s Cat quest I literally could not believe it. I believe it was members only and I specifically became a member for the first time just for that reason. Everybody was fishing like mad that week and showing off their cats.

When you were in the wild the ultimate f2p pking set up was rune platebody amd platelegs plus rune 2h. You used to be able to range people in the wilderness from outside of the walls of the dark knights fortress. Dark knights fortress was always occupied from people collecting runes because runecrafting wasn't created. People uses to sit in the bank and trade cut gems for uncut gems, back then cut gems were worth more than uncut. When mining coal in barb village the coal was not in the center were the stronghold is. It was on the side next to the fish and you had to spam click to be able to mine the rock or else you couldn't mine because someone else was already mining it

Yeah I played back then for a brief period. I remember that at very low levels everyone would be killing eachother outside of lumby and magic spells were OP AF. Also, the players with god spells were the most feared players as they really messed you up. Every time there was a fight, the player casting god spells would likely win. That was the most fun I ever had playing Runescape.

I saw a few people mention it, but the pvp / non pvp choice was given at character creation, and you could change it two times and that would be it. I picked non-pvp because I didn't want to loose my stuff lol. But the worlds were not split (at least at first, they weren't) because I still remember the constant fighting at the cabbage fields near Lumbridge (free food!).
And yes, BlueRose13x was my Runescape idol! She actually smithed me my first rune equipment! She just asked that I brought Nature Runes and coal to her (so she could superheat rune bars next to the anvil)...

Only started playing back in 05. I played on and off. I remember trying to snipe a mithril sword from the general store in lumbridge. Rs had a different feel to me then, i barely knew how to play properly. The person who started it all was a player named legolas. He gave me full iron i was so excited. I thought full iron was the best armor. That set me to being a level 50 and i met someone named kingiceman5, we became great friends for years. i since then have lost touch with him. My rs3 acc has firecape, 99str and okayish stats. Osrs has quad 99s and almost 99hp with 75 def, i became a pretty good pker also. I do wish i could get in touch with my old friends....

An old school player here aswell. Dont remember exactly when i started, but i remember when me and my friends made one of the first 1def pures, 40att 1def 75str with 64 health if i remember correctly. Prayer level was 32 so we rarely lost our R2Hs (rune 2h). You could train ranged to a certain amount so it wouldnt affect your combat level, so i had 79, hit 13s with it. Getting a 2nd def level was so frustrating, that some of us quit because of that. I have never been P2P and didnt see a point becoming one, since f2p pk was the thing. I remember sitting behind my computer, around varrock wild lvl 1 and shaking like crazy because of the adrenaline, back then i didn't understand why that occurred, but now i see. My bank was loaded with items, i never sold anything because money had no value for me, only sold something to buy lobster certs, or went fishing myself. I had 91 fishing and 85 cooking which was insane back then. At the peak i had around 300 r2hs, tons of a2hs, m2hs, ruby ammies n shit. At some point i decided to quit and made a huge drop party, but much later returned and had about 25 r2hs just before classic was shut. (we valued things in r2hs for some reason). Still miss that shit.

The PK setting could only be changed twice. It was normal to start as a PK player and when you got in too deep with a fight, you'd run and after 10 seconds you can change it to non PK. Non PK players couldn't get attacked by PK players. After you used all changes, you were stuck with either PK or non PK

Some fun facts about the fatigue system, facts that I don't think I've ever found anyone else who remembers it...
Not only was there a time when there were no sleeping bags so you had to go to a bed every time you needed to rest, but before the sleeping bag update, different things gave various amounts of fatigue instead of the flat 1%/action that we got after the sleeping bag update. For instance I swear I can recall mining coal in Barbarian Village and only being able to mine like 5 or 6 before having to go back to Varrock sleep because it only took a small amount of coal to max out your fatigue.
Additionally, as you can likely tell from what I just wrote, it used to be that if your fatigue was too high to perform an action, it simply wouldn't allow you to do the action at all, but later they changed it so that you just didn't get exp when your fatigue was maxed.
I would like to find at least one other person who can remember this to assure me that I'm not crazy.

its not even comparable to the exp of old now, people have no idea, it was seemingly impossible to max out when it came out so it felt like yhou needed to pick things you wanted and thats the only thing you could really do. My dad played about a year and took work off to do it he played one of his characters 18 plus hours a day while paying people in game cash to run him bars, ores, food, etc. while he played 2 characters. They wouldnt let you log in multiple accounts back then which is why we had to network our home setup, man nostalgia :D

Bit late, but with the OCR bots the way they got around it was with IRC like chat where everyone would be shown the word and the first person to type it in correctly would get points (typing it wrong would reduce your own points) and being late with the right word did nothing. Players could then "spend" those points while they were botting to allow others to solve their captcha.

This may have just been a dream I had when I was younger, but it may not be.
I remember when playing runescape, there was this trap door that you could go down (it might have been the draynor one), but instead of the sewers it was a room with skeletons guarding a chest of some sort. I died from them and quit, then later returned when I was a bit older and I was never able to find it again. Does anyone else remember this, or was this all a dream?

I remember back in 07-08 when my chlidhood was crushed, i was picking flax cus i saw everyone else doing it *I was rocking a granite body with Rune legs and gmaul with that beutiful Rune med helm cus i couldnt afford full yet* so some guy started a conversation with me we were talking for maybe a half hour or so under that half hour i was complaining about that i want too equip dragon items and wanted lost city done.. I ddnt know English too the point where i could understand the quest text so after adding him on msn Messenger and giving him my password he ofc hacked me.. I was crying so bad i even got my mom too call and message this dude for me that he has too give it back, he ddnt and i was crying for almost 2 weeks straight not knowing that password recovery exists.. 2-3 years later i realise that it exists and recovered my account, he ddnt take my items my gold or anything he just tped my char back to lumb and left it there too rott.. Good Times

I hated fatigue, it was the worst thing in the game at the time. When they released sleeping bags, it didn't solve the issue, but atleast you could actually train away from a bed. Although it was not much worse than the random events that replaced them in rs2, grrr I died from a random event while fishing because I got distracted...and I was wearing something really valuable lol... memories

Fuzzy memory but one of the best pkers / highest levels was called Alchemist or something along those lines, anyone remember?
There was at one point in Varrock, to the East, where they had a whole section of what just looked like random abandoned huts that you couldn't enter through the gate. They talked about player houses, and then built a certain part of the map for it, but then they backed out on the skill, and just left the map abandoned there for quite a while. I think they eventually brought the skill in right? I haven't played since they have
Used to grind for mining coal, when there was no mining guild, so i used to have to go into the wilderness just to mine coal just above Edgeville, and risk being rekt. I traded with Bluerose 30k coal, fully grinded, for a Rune Battle Axe at the time, when (i believe at the time the mods had influence on her) she wasn't smithing Rune 2H for people and she hadn't quite gotten to 99 smithing yet. My brother had 30k lobsters, going back and forth between Port Sarim and Draynor Village for every trip of 26 lobsters lol
Also when we finally traded these off, there wasn't a note system yet for trading, so we literally had to stand there for 2-3 hours trading , at which any point anyone could easily get scammed
Then there was party hats, with the Christmas event, when you could get party crackers so easily. The best item it could get you was a Rune Square shield, which is what we hoped for. Party hats were easy to come by, you could easily get heaps of different colours. Then suddenly i took a break, came back and people were buying it for 2 million gp (at the time when we opened it, you could probably count the people with 1 mil+ on 2 hands)
