The Ghurkas are fearless and the British Army are blessed to have them on their sides. I’ve met ex soldiers and their families and you couldn’t wish to meet a group of more friendly people. Except if you’re the enemy.

Chechens can fight no doubt, but I'd still want the gurkhas on my side. They are considered to be the finest mountain troops in the world and are absolutely savage.
When I was younger, I used to go to school with a friend whose father drove us each day. He was from Nepal and was an ex-British military veteran. It took me years to make the connection that he was a Gurkha. ._.
I like this narrator's cadence and pronunciation much more. It's not as energetic but feels much more informative.

Roman Legionairs were great at a ton of things and well trained for sure. That's what made Rome such a powerhouse. Just not the fighting ability but engineering, logistics and training. Definitely not the best of the best in their own military. There were more specialized troops like the Prateorian Guard, Centurion, Equities, and Saralarius. Iberian Mercanaries, The Macedonian Companions, Sacred Band of Thebes, Vangarian Guard, Apple Bearers, just to name a few just off the top of my head.
Saying Roman Legionairs is like saying United States Marine Core is the best of the best. No there are special dedicated units inside it and even different legions were vastly better than others. Ceasars 10th Legion to name one!
Companions... Learned why they were so good and sought - somehow they fought with spears on horseback without stirrups! How they didn't get easily get kocked off just by charging with their spears and continued to be effective in the fray is beyond me. Must have thunder thighs strong enough to crack nuts or some shyte haha!
Gurkas definitely deserve the list.
The unit I wouldn't want to face in war would be Task Force 141.
I mean most of them are dead if you don't count the rebooted version shouldn't be to worried on that front.

In times of war, the best men are needed for the most dangerous tasks. Even when all odds are stacked against them, they will prevail. It is interesting to see how special forces and other units, have a strong brotherhood. Partly due to their determination and in the thick of combat.

@@Joe-Slow he fought alongside his troops a few times and because of his status and the fact they weren’t fighting a traditional enemy (the Gauls and Celtic tribes) if his army was to fail he would be killed slowly. He put his life on the line and was highly admired by the veterans and officers under him
The reason as to why the legionnaires wore the sword on the right was due to the tight formations. That stuff is worth an own video, so many details.
Honestly the worst part of a legion would be that hundreds if not thousands would March with those tower shields and plant them into the dirt and form up and often carried two pilums it was like a throwing spear that was designed to penetrate enemy armor and then bend off after hitting a bone making it virtually impossible to remove and it was super heavy so it would often cause fatal tearing damage and was known to take men of armor off of horse back so imagine trying to charge this wall defended line in ancient times. Like, imagine facing one of the most elite and well-equipped forces of the known world, and see these waves of sticks coming down and impaling your friends and horses alike every time you try to march on that battle line. Not to mention if there is a full Legion present I promise it brought siege equipment there’s scorpions and catapults very likely cavalry massive supply trains like this would be a heavily imposing force to see in the ancient times 7/10 do not recommend charging unless your ready to lose most of that force and it better be damn heavily armed and armored Even the Carthaginians using war elephants struggled to breach those lines, And even if you did break their lines then you get to deal with the war dogs

My grand-grandparent was drafted to the blue division, he was one of the ones that preferred to keep fighting instead of coming back to spain, my family didn't knew much but what i learned by searching for documents is that he went with the ss and died in belarus. Funny enough my other grand-grandparent was one of the many spanish republicans that joined the allies and later he liberated Paris, so yeah, i have family history on both sides of ww2

The "División Azul" was a 100% volunteer component. The Spanish government allowed those who wanted to go to Germany to join the German army so to say that he was "drafted" is incorrect. And yes, in the Spanish civil war, families killed each other, brothers against brothers, mainly because if your town was behind National lines and the town next door was behind Republican lines, your family could be killing each other, without any ideological motive. The truth is that the Germans were tremendously impressed by the heroism, tenacity and performance of the Spanish soldiers.
It would be cool if you guys covered the danish frogmen there uniforms look like dark spirits from beyond the grave.

a few more Units that got a respected Reputation that i know of are,
French Foreign Legion, German Paratroopers or "green Devils", Sturmtruppen, RLI (Rhodesian Light Infantry) and Selous Scouts, SOBR (yes, the Chechen Guys), 32nd Battalion, and the Mercenary Groups that were in Central/Southern Africa in the 60-80s (5th Command and etc.)
"SOBR" is an Umbrella-Term like "Speznas". The Chechens are Part of SOBR but are not the entire Unit. And they are better on TikTok than on the actual Battlefield. Their Relive-Attempt at Hostomel was an absolute Desaster.

@@malcomx1924 Yes. Hence the Name. It was a Birthday Present from Artur Axmann, the Leader of the Hitler Youth to Hitler himself. The Men who fought in it were mostly 17-18yo by the Time they saw Combat. Their Officers and NCOs (around 1000 Men) were drawn from the 1st SS-Panzerdivision "LSSAH" who were battle-hardened Veterans of the Eastern Front. This Combination of youthful Spirit and expierenced Staff was a deadly Combination.

It is quite interesting to note that almost every mechanism of a land army which is in use today was already known and coded back in ancient Rome.

Yeah they were absolute pros & spec ops at a multitude of different roles all rolled into one, they were the army, navy, engineer corps, besiegers, artillery units, bodyguard of a commander, builders (of forts etc), all this and more, and had to endure harsh privation, such as hunger and cold, while carrying up to 90lbs of gear, marching 20 miles a day minimum, and still be fighting fit and fresh to fight a battle at any moment. They expanded the boundary of Rome from just the city itself to one of the largest empires in history and fought engagements that are still taught today. Truly a force to be reckoned with.. like many of the other units in this list and beyond the scope of this video... there are a few more I would have personally thought should perhaps have deserved to be included but then this video would be much much longer than it currently is :)

@@lummy3180 Neither did the enemy, so one could argue since it wasn't necessary, no effort was expended to develop it :p Although it could also be considered that there is a theory that people's eyesight was much better back then, they had to use their vision much more than we do today and at distance, perhaps since being more necessary it was more widespread as a trait, the sooner you could see the enemy approaching the more advantageous it was, some evidence for this is that hunter-gatherer-style-based tribes etc that have opted to remain separate from what generally might be called the 'modern world' have comparatively far sharper vision; perhaps even night vision; they need it to hunt better There would also have been far more visibility at night from the moon and stars on a clear night given the lack of pollutant gases covering the skies and population centres in particular today

Smersh was soviet counter spy special force which is the most secretive special unit until it disbanded after Chernobyl incident and its still has not much information about it

except if you are in one of the units who wants to come across other units
@@beepboop204 no special forces unit “wants” to come up against a unit as tough as them, they are mostly trained for hostage rescue or kidnapping/killing war criminals, never heard of a special forces team being sent on a mission to battle other special forces, that’s a worst case scenario and more than likely a suicide mission, special forces are basically ninjas sent to do covert operations.

My grandfather was a flamethrower operator in the pacific during WW2. He died when i was young so i never got to hear any war stories, but my dad told me he didn't like talking about it and only talk to my dad about what he did in the war after my dad had come back from serving in Vietnam. He told my dad he could still see the people faces. I guess lightning people on fire kinda messes with your head a little bit.

The Gurkhas were so fierce in combat, that only rumours about them made the argentinian troops in the Malvinas/Falklands War fear engaging them in combat, even before the Gurkhas actually entered the conflict;
So much during the attack to take Mount William, near Port Stanley, the mere vision of the Gurkhas charging in broad daylight was enough to make the argentinian troops almost immediately head to the nearby Scot Guards and surrender in large numbers.
Honestly if you are being persued the last people you want after you (of all these units mentioned) is the Ghurkas those fellas are unreal!
Referring to the Ghurkas as “tough fighters” doesn’t come even remotely close to these capabilities of these guys - they still are the most amazing, aggressive, but with intelligence that far outweighs their background that I’ve ever been fortunate enough to have fought alongside during my brief career (Royal Marine Commando & C Squadron 1978-2008).
For such a relatively small force* I think that it’s telling just how many VC’s they were issued, especially when being nominated for a VC meant that the Ghurka concerned had to be seen by two others (usually officers). Unfortunately it was frequently the case that by the time a VC type action was going on, the fighting would be so intense that there were no officers/NCO’s left to bear witness, yet the Ghurka would keep on fighting until dead or so badly wounded that he couldn’t wield his Kukri any more.
It’s not unknown that having severe blood loss, multiple gun shot wounds etc, was seen by them as a reason to stop fighting. On the battlefield they are, in my rather biased opinion, not just some of the most dangerous troops/weapons in themselves, but easily amongst the best. Despite their actions throughout the years they have never been seen as specifically Special Forces Units, despite their abilities since WW2 (and sooner) to perform actions that even the most experienced SF units might struggle with.
Outside of the fighting they come across as mild-mannered, rather quiet (no braggarts, nor even a hint of the Walter Mitty fantasists that the US and UK are damned annoyed to deal with) and exceptional hosts when having a wet and a digestive biscuit and always the quiet, easy going attitude towards anyone/anything sharing some dits and pleasant company, but frequently avoiding the brutality that accompanies any recollections of
* there’s a quaint phrase used by various security agencies that tries to relegate the Ghurkas to the equivalent of the local PCSO’s, yet it’s an entirely inaccurate phrase and anyone thinking that the Ghurkas are just an old legacy regiment from the days of the British Empire would be best advised to check the regiments battle honours. Considering the size of their regiment, they seem to acquire battle honours with such regularity that there are few regiments that even come close to their level.
Anyone that knows how a Bootneck thinks will understand that this comment alone is a tough admission to make for a lifetime Royal Marine Commando ((2Lt - Major (very short while))

You need to do a video on the Sri Lankan civil war. Where the Tamils and the ruling Sinhala were at war from 1983-2009. The Tamil Tigers brought the Indian army to their knees, the Gurkhas and the Paras didn’t stand a chance. They were one of the only known terror groups/guerrilla organizations with their own Air Force. They took over the Maldives and assassinated the Indian prime minister at the time. That war lasted 26 years and didn’t end too long ago, yet it is one of the least known about wars and least talked about.
It would probably come off more polite and demanding if you asked them to do it rather than tell them they need to. Not hating on you all, man. Just trying to spread some manners.

Not exactly what I was thinking about when flamethrower units were mentioned...it would be scary but I'd worry more about the guys I read about in soldier of fortune...who regulary invade North Korea together with SK royal Marines for practice and psycological warfare. What's so scary about that and what I read? Imagine you are guarding a missile silo in the center of a wide open ,well manicured football field . You have a sneezing fit for 30 seconds and suddenly you see a six pack of pepsi,coke or Mt dew ,with little us and SK cocktail flags in the drinks . Setting on the launch pad, with no visible intruders . If you ever wonder why NK have not caused more problems and stay to themselves , that's why . Dark opps with gear we won't hear about for another decade infiltrating missle launch sites ,leaving little gifts and egressing without being seen and without violence . Now if you think about it hard, you'll realize there is only one answer to this and it's not a Gillie suit ...they do not work on mowed grass very well. But if you are using stealth tech with spec ops training to travel quietly and leave no trace ...now that's scary . That level of stealth means they can go into civilian houses and busy public buildings without being seen or heard...

The caligae, the Roman military sandal, was probably more like a boot. It was strapped quite tightly, sometimes over much of the lower leg, and had protection for the toes. So it's not like they went to war in flip-flops ;)

In battle, you as a flamethrower operator did NOT want to be captured. I've heard horror stories of what happened to captured flamethrower operators.

To be Part of an Elite-Unit you can´t be a Psycho. Those get easily detected and thrown out. You want Professionals not Gun Nuts. And the Term "Murder" is wrongly placed in a War-Scenario. A Murderer kills on very baed Motives such as Greed, Envy or even Lust. In War you kill because you have to. It´s either them or you. Of Course there are War Criminals but as you already see in the Name even in War there are Rules and at least in Theory those Guys have to face a Military Court.

Ik a teacher who his grandfather was a flamethrower in WW2. He was in Iwo Jima. He didn’t got a single scratch or wound. He met his great grandkids and died in his 90s.
I remember the scene from the movie, All Quiet on The Western Front with the flame thrower. It was pretty vicious, and the tanks.
