Per Platinum's literature included with the pen, the decision to make the pen with the seam is an intentional one. They say that it's done this way to have the pattern of material visible on all sides of the pen as opposed to just the top and bottom as is the case on a pen like the omas arco celluloid. They go on to say that this process of bending the celluloid into a tube is actually more difficult than using a solid rod.

I enjoy this look just because it shows how the pen was made.

Wow! The first time you present the pen to the camera it really makes a great impact. A beautiful pen but you spotted the flaw in the celluloid. A great review, as always.

Thank you so much for this review. I've been really tempted by this pen, but that seam: it would have driven me nuts! Now I know to steer clear.

That's my dream pen! I'm currently saving for one. I hope to buy one before Christmas. It is called Kin gyo (gold fish) here in Japan.

I have the 3776 Gathered in extra fine. When I get another 3776, I am getting this one in Broad.

Great review as always. I love the look of this pen. Although maybe not at this price point. The seam would probably bother me after a while t.t

Thank you, Stephen. Yes, it is reminiscent of koi. That seam on the cap is distressing. That is not picking nits for that price.

I like the looks of these pens (especially the jade ones), but the seam always drives me away. Thanks for the review!

It's a beautiful pen. I found one for quite a bit less, also broad. My only complaint has been that the trim ring on the cap is loose, and I can't figure out how to make it not be loose anymore. The celluloid scares me when I start thinking about glues.

Ordered the same pen last week in F. Until it arrives, I guess I'll have to breathe in Vick's Vaporub for the camphor hit.

I know I've been sick but I heard "300 sexy big ones." For a minute I though Lord Windermere was making the video ;) Another informative video as always. Love the color of that pen and the nib is amazing. What can I say? I like them broad ;) Ok I'd better stop now. Love to you and Azizah.

Huh. I never noticed the seam. I have a jade celluloid 3776 and it has the seam too, though it's MUCH harder to see.

  • @cbboone

The seam is the difference between the pen being $400 and the pen being $800. Celluloid is a precious material, it's hard to make/aquire, and Platinum claims that making it by wrapping it is harder: but I can assume that it's cheaper (thus the cheaper price than other Platinum celluloid pens)

I don't think you are nitpicking at all on the cut off in the celluloid

I'm afraid I like the seam - I'm strange that way. Great video! What was that buzzing sound in the background? An appliance? It was a bit distracting.
Anderson's Pens shows this pen as being sold out - but nevermind, it's way above my price point. And speaking of price - way overpriced imho. C'mon, it should be around $200. Not going to lay out an argument just going to put that out there. :D
Love the 3776 model, though. Poor little fish fell over!

For me, that seam on a $400 pen is a fail. I do not know the limitations of working with celluloid as a pen material; sounds like pens can be milled out of a solid rod of the stuff, and as that is the case, I think that Platinum whiffed on the fabrication method for the Koi.
Excellent, informative, helpful review as always, Stephen!

Hey Stephen , I wanted to know if a pelikan m200 could stand a drop from about 4.5 feet . I am careful for the most part but when the fateful situation rises , will it survive . keep up the good work !

curiosity Fountain pens are not made to be dropped, so damage is to be expected.

It's may be a "nib picking" as you said, but it would have ever more perfect without this line on the cap.

A pen without a piston filler should be somehow penalized in terms of pricing. As an engineer I respect manufacturers which go to the extra length to design and incorporate a functioning piston filler mechanism (or something similar) incorporated in the pens body. They have to design that function, test it, prove it works, prove its reliability and then sell it. That to me - is worth extra $$$.
On several occasions I've backed from shelling out a hefty amount for Nakaya and Namiki pens just because they had a cartridge converter. And for that reason - I justified paying extra for Pelikan and Montblanc and so on... thus - 300 USD or EUR for pen like this - or for that matter any other pen even if it is handmade - just doesn't make sense (for me).
I know it's a personal preference, but too many times I was bummed to see a gorgeous pen, which writes great but - cost almost 1,000 USD and doesn't have a piston filler. Why not?
