I’m not giving up my vintage 1970s glass top coffee table 😂 I love it! great in my tiny living room as it almost disappears. Also coasters fix the noise issue.
Sophie is always so calm and sophisticated it's funny to watch her get a little unhinged here. "What do I do with that, do I Hoover it, do I dust it??" Lol. Great video.
Came across your video this morning. Im sure you and your team are wonderful people, but these suggestions are exactly why I have been decluttering and minimizing my house over the last couple years. People, keep what you love but use daily. Don’t get caught up in what’s in style. I’ve spent thousands of dollars trying to keep up with style and it didn’t make me any happier. Nothing wrong with change, just make sure you are changing because YOU have grown tired of it, not because the trend is telling you to do it.
I love how you’re talking about the cleaning part! Thank you! I’m allergic to dusty stuff so easy to clean is def a important factor for me. Easy to clean and timeless that’s the goal
@Yeeefaaan - I'm with Sophie on the cleaning part, too! My mom used to tell me that her decor choices stemmed partly from having to a lot of dusting of decorative ornaments at her home growing up - it was definitely NOT part of her life's plan to keep doing that! The older I get the MORE important this is to me.
Very considerate and practical advice. Though I still love my Barcelona coffee table designed by Mies van der Rohe despite its glass top. So I would say that if one does not choose a furniture or decor because it feels trendy, but because one genuinely loves it, you should embrace it.
My ex mother-in-law had a crushed velvet sofa. It was mustard colored and hideous, but she loved it 😂 said it was the most comfortable sofa she ever had. So sad for people who have to get rid of stuff they love just because someone says it was so last year.
@Cherish Dials - I agree with you so much on the comfort! I still kind of regret getting rid of the most comfy couch I ever owned, though the frame was never going to be quite right for where I wanted to go, design wise. Looking back, I wish I had custom designed the base and reupholstered it though. I would have made it works somewhere, somehow, if I had known that I just wasn't going to get that perfect fit and comfort again. It had some pretty lines, except for the base, And I didn't want a skirt at the bottom anymore.
@@bitrudder3792 - I feel lucky because in the country in Indiana where I’m from-if you don’t have a plaid couch you’re in the height of sophistication 😂😂😂 and yes. Comfort is more important than style to me. I’m sorry about your couch. That mustard velvet couch truly was hideous though.
You don’t have to get rid of anything you like. Comfortable is important too and if they’re happy about it so keep it. They’re probably not watching this video anyways. There’s no video for everybody. But personally I appreciate content like this. I want to find inspiration for styling my home and she’s def more experienced and skilled than I am. I’m grateful for the FREE advice. It’s YOUR choice to follow it or not. And if it’s not for you, just close it and move on to the next. It’s subjective anyways
“I’m not saying you have to strip everything out of your house…..” oh, phew 😂. I am with Sophie on many of these, but love the wooden chairs. Most of the contents of our house are from auctions, markets, family, eBay so we only have what we love and have never knowingly been on trend! Great video ❤
I haven't got what I shouldn't - but I have just replaced a wood table with a glass top one. In a small all-in-one space, it makes a huge difference in making the room look larger, spacier.
As a nurse and as someone getting older, I look at glass coffee tables a little more suspiciously, lol! It's easy to trip over what you don't see. But glass tables are awesome for creating that sense of space. Not so great for toddlers who seem to crack their heads on them regularly.😅
@@bitrudder3792 OMG my Mom got a glass top coffee table and a glass table for the kitchen a few years ago, and they were so uncomfortable. I expected my parents house to be the ultimate in comfort, but suddenly I was always terrified that I was going to put my feet up accidentally and smash them through the glass. Or place something heavy down on the kitchen table and shatter it. I missed their big sturdy furniture that used to be there when there were 7 of us living in the house lol
@@goodgrief888 - I can totally picture that, we were 7 also! Big round formica kitchen table with a generous turntable made serving a breeze, and only wooden or marble coffee tables (for the living room)! I miss those! The wooden one was a box that held out of season clothing/blankets and rolled on casters. The marble one would be so chic today, lol! But there's nothing like sturdy, purposeful furniture! And its so hard to feel "at home" with glass sometimes, even if it creates a nice look!
Agree on all EXCEPT glass top tables -- come on; use coasters. They're extremely versatile & make a small room look airy -- can you imagine a Paris apartment withOUT one?
Who knew that Sophie was so funny!? The “what is happening here?” at 1:15 and “what is that?” at 8:30 is priceless; I was literally in tears!! Can anyone else tell that the faux plant wall is her absolute least favorite??? THANKFULLY I am not guilty of any of these “trends”. Love your impeccable style Sophie. Please keep giving us great decorating advice!
Haha I was laughing so hard...I'm picturing a room with a wall of fake plants, crushed velvet sofa, shag carpet, knot and sphere pillows, uncomfortable knock-off chairs and a synthetic velvet chair with a bum print...a designers worst nightmare! But seriously I agree with all of these!
REALLY valued the tips on moulding. Absolutely cannot afford Sophie’s services (maybe one day!), but love implementing her tips and collab products into my home
Great video Sophie. Keep the videos coming. You are among the best designers and among the best You Tube content creators. This channel is destined to have millions of subscribers. Can’t wait to see what comes next.
I can 100% relate to this. Pointing out to anyone that something about their space is plain wrong, is very difficult, and as you say a couple of times here, you would just expect them to hate you for it. But I agree with all your comments, I think they are perfect examples of how to make any room look cheap. Thank you for your video.
I agree with almost all your insights save the glass table one. I purchased a round glass dining table for my dining room, well made, with low back chairs that actually look exactly like from a 30s movie "My Man Godfrey" in a scene from a snazzy supper club they opened with down and out have-nots as employees. Not intentional on my part but surprising to see. Anyway, the glass does open up the room as the other furniture is different eras of vintage in wood plus you can see the rug. I see another commenter has same thoughts. What really shocks me is how many wealthy pp have really bad design on the interior including gawdy dated kitchens in some absolutely gorgeous period homes that are worth millions. It's bizarre.
Thank you for yet another inspiring video. Would you ever consider doing a video on how to mix and match different wood finishes to achieve a cohesive look? I, personally, would really appreciate your thoughts and input on the subject. Thanks again!
That would be fun, if she did a wood mixing video. We have solved that problem with a few clever techniques. We have both orange toned and reddish brown toned wood stained furniture, and some medium cooler brown items. And peachy pinky millennial tile. And blonde wood. I mostly separated the blonde wood from the red brown stuff in different rooms. Walls were painted a dark brown, Sherwin-Williams Jute brown, That has a coral base that makes the orange cabinets and mental sing beautifully together and looks good with the floor. Amazing difference people think we have new cabinets. A leather chair in a cognac color that harmonizes with the orange wood, A ceiling fan with blades of the same color, apparel Woodchest and a vintage sewing box and some water hyacinth chairs in similar orange to cinnamon tones balance out a few pieces in the more traditional reddish brown opium table, fluted pedestal, end table. Walls that are not dark brown or a light pinkish Taupe that goes great with the floor, another throwback color to the early 2000s but it works. The trick was to find a color to tie them all together and the brown with the coral undertone accomplished that. The other trick is to marry Wood with low grain patterns. The busier the wood, the more visual excitement there is. The harder it is to get them to behave together. So our rustic pine furniture, even though a lot of it carries the same orange tone, I don't put it anywhere near this stuff. It's upstairs doing its thing in a more organic and natural way. The low grain blonde furniture in white birch and unstained maple lives at the front of the house, I will be adding a more espresso dark brown wall and white curtains and off-white to that space and it will still relate. A blonde wood accent chair actually is not too bad when I move it temporally into the family room where all this other wood is happening. It relates because it has a cream colored upholstery on the seat, and that goes with the soft white curtains, cream club chairs, white piano, white kitchen counters, etc. Oh, and we got a beige flecked soft white Berber area rug to add more neutrals for the wood tones to play off of. Empty nesting is great, you can have the kind of carpet you want! So minding your woodgrain and stacking on the neutral of your choice to play with your Woodtones is another strategy.
I absolutely loved this video Sophie…well done Olly for persuading Sophie to do it 🤭 I, like most viewers would love to see an IKEA video because whilst they do have tat, they also have some really classic pieces that can be upcycled for years to come. X
That was fun! I would love an entire video dedicated to wall moulding. The brief part you shared in this video was informative and things I would have never considered.
Many say that wallpaper is out of date. However, I disagree. I just wallpapered my large closet room with chinoiserie similar to what I see in this video, and half of the house and ceilings are done in a non-shiny textured vinyl of cream and ice blue. The texture of wallcoverings varies according to how the light hits it, and this is preferred. Wallcovering provides interest in a room, especially with 18th and early 19th century furniture and design
I agree with all of your dislikes however not sure about glass tables albeit I agree with reasons you dislike them. .Oka do some lovely ones that I very much like.
Girl, you are so on point. I salute all you loath lol. I've visited soooo many homes that just full of glittery bits and bobs and they really do make a house look tacky tacky.
The moulding segment was my absolute favourite. We need more of …How not to do it and how to fix it. The only thing missing was a picture of what the final project looked like.
Wallpaper with LED lights - that's a new one by me! Sophie I agrre with you on every point. I'm 58 and remember my mother purchasing a top dining table in the 70's which she regularly assigned one of us to clean as it was just a dust collector, could never keep it bits free. Those houses will date so quickly...
I can only dream of living in one of Sophie's designed houses. That being said thankfully I don't have any of these in my home! ***sighs a breath of relief*** Fab video as always! You reactions in this one was fabulous 🤣 and had me laugh out loud! x
You make so much sense! You're simply brilliant, gosh, some of those examples you really have to question 'what were they thinking'! I also think of the cleaning aspect first thing xx thanks loved the knightsbridge project, very ott, but just stunning xx simplicity is always elegant and you've got it to the t xx
Best video, for a change something NOT to do !!!!!!!!!!!!! Here in USA there are a ton like barn, doors, ship lap, people who just fallow blindly without having their own aesthetic!
I like your calm directness without all the drama/ over excitable personality. I have those dining chairs. Oops. But I know they are temporary for a few years. I went with a cheap fix😐
Oh my goodness agree with everything! I'm an allergy person too, so anything that catches dust makes me instantly hold my breath! Totally needed the trigger warnings ha ha!
Excellent !!! I have allways wondered : what does Sophie think about the home décor vibe we ve been seeing the last couple of years : Gubi bouclé sofas ; roche Bobois mah jong; rotin chairs and lamps; wood chairs and benches in dining rooms... I fine all of the above impraticable and inconfortable not to mention these being just trendy items ..... much much prefer classic items
Iam so happy you did this video! No I don't have any of your no nos in my home! Thank goodness... I love a well balanced room that I wouldn't get tired of in a year. Love your Designs very much,!
I agree with all of these except for one. The shaggy rug. lol But that being said I have conditions. I have put the glittery kind in my kids room before and I like to layer a more low pile shag rug with sheep skin in my own bedroom but I would never use one in a common area like the livingroom where they would get completely destroyed or caked in dirt from shoes. That's it. ☺
I wish I had bought more than one cream colored hundred percent wool shaggy rug when it was $79 at the big box store. It was the perfect 4 x 6 size for our bathroom to keep it from having this odd array of bathmats scattered around and asymmetrical flooring space. It really elevated the space, felt good underfoot, and the standard hotel style bath mat that we used in front of the tub and shower could be put out of the way/into the laundry When not in immediate use. It lasted a really long time before it finally started to look sad, and then I was sad because I didn't have another one and I couldn't find anyone selling such a thing at such a reasonable price and at just the right size!
First time here. I really thought I was going to hate this video when I read the title, but I think she hot the nail on the head. Her ideas are practical as well as tasteful.
THANK YOU for calling out the Jeanneret chairs! I don't care how it looks, an bony, uncomfortable chair should NEVER be a trend. But I still have my glass top coffee table and am thinking of upgrading to a better one. I don't know if I can give up that openness. But I don't have little kids running through, which would change my mind completely on glass. Great video.
Loved this video and yes I have mirrors furniture in my home (awful to clean and it’s going before we move next month), your video inspiration are coming with me to our new house😊. Would love to you guys to film a video giving styling advice at our new place too. It’s a grey canvas and we are going more of a stone natural asthetic. Would be fab to discuss further .. love your vibe 😊
I’m still catching up on all your prior videos, and I found this one particularly entertaining. The post date shows 2yrs ago and yet to this very day, I have seen in homes and shops some of the exact items you mentioned as a ‘please don’t…’ I personally couldn’t agree with you more Sophie, I found them all revolting 2 years ago and I still do! 😂
Phew! Thank goodness I have none of those in my home! I got rid of the white glass and chrome 8-seater monstrosity dining table last year and the grey velvet bum imprinted dining chairs with chrome legs urrgghh and bought a beautiful Australian ash timber dining table. I also purchased 6 wooden Hans Wegner style “wishbone” dining chairs. They probably come under the “massed produced” category and I know they are quite common but I really love them with the new table. I enjoyed this video, please do more like this, Sophie. I’m sure there’s tons more tacky styles that you can think of! 🤣🥰
I totally agree with you. 👏🏼Thanks for having the courage to state your cringers. They’re the same as mine. Shag carpet….yuck. Faux bling…..why! Glass top furniture……scary! I enjoyed this a lot. 😊
I agree with your comments about everything, but the sphere pillows. While I know they aren't functional, I love my sphere pillows. They are super cute (if you get ones that are perfectly round) and geometric items are my aesthetic lol.
Hi Sophie! Loved ur video! You are one of my favourite interior designers I have come across. Your so relatable even though your projects are super duper expensive. Lol.. I try to take inspiration and adapt but I have made many silly mistakes which I want to rectify when I get a bigger place. Can’t afford the beautiful furniture, art decor or wall papers u use but I am sure I can’t find alternatives. Well can try..Thank you for all ur tips u give us! ❤❤❤
Excellent thanks for sharing! I would love to see a video on how to mix patterns in interior design with some examples! That would be super helpful ! Thank you
On point with everything. For me, the worst of the lot was a toss up between the faux wall plant and shaggy rug..I disliked both equally. Never saw the interest in them.
I stumbled on this channel and thought the Princess of Wales had started an Interior Design channel! You must hear this all the time. I stayed, watched, enjoyed and subscribed! Looking forward to learning more!
Thanks for all good tips you shared! You are the best of best among the interior designers I have seen on the TH-cam. Look forward to seeing more great videos from you. Thanks!
Your incisive insights are truly praiseworthy. Your infinite knowledge on design itruly reaffirms your position as the Leading Luminary of the Design Arena . As you spoke of wall trims and molding patterns on walls, are they included any more in modern design any longer as they are associated with older architecture.Kindly enlighten on this
As always, beautiful, elegant and inspirational. Sophie and her teams interior design is just incomparable in my opinion. The only thing I can complain about is that there is not daily videos haha.
Love this! Can you please make a video about tips for battling dust bunnies and dirt? And what your look for in antiques? Also, Yes please to an ikea video!
Your best friend is a dust mop! I learned about these from Don Aslett, Who wrote cleaning books back in the 70s or 80s, around then. If you have hard floors, these make short work of keeping them dust/dirt free. Quick and easy, do it often. Otherwise, vacuuming as often as possible with a high-quality vacuum with a HEPA filter is a good idea. Regular vacuums will just toss dust back out into the air to a large degree. I think the best brand for this is Miele. It's specifically for people with allergies so it does a great job with dust and dander and pollen etc. Personally, I use a very lightweight Oreck upright because I have to carry it up and down the stairs. It does have a HEPA filter but it doesn't do as good a job as the Miele. Still, I love it and I've had mine for about 21 years now and it's easy for me to have it serviced, and it still works great. Great return on investment. Mop as needed If you have pets, or a tendency to get spiders, it can be an uphill battle to deal with dust bunnies that get tangled up with hair and webs. Good old-fashioned lint rollers can get dust bunnies off of curtains that hang to the floor, so avoiding curtains that hang to the floor is a good idea. Also, once a month shift your furniture around and clean under it if you can't do it more often. If you live in an area that's undergoing a lot of construction, you're going to have more dust than usual until they are finished. Grin and Bear it. Going minimal so that you have to lift fewer things and move fewer things to clear the dust off of surfaces is the smartest thing you can do. But mostly, you just need to shift the dust. Oh, did you know you can use a nice clean dust mop on the walls? They like to be dusted every now and again. Ceiling fan blades also. And don't forget to change the filter in your HVAC return, if you have central air. Or do whatever maintenance is required on any air-conditioning unit you have. When that clogs up a bit with Dust, you not only end up with more dust around the house, but you can damage your air-conditioning system. One last thought, if you have a rainbow or Thermax vacuum that filters the air through water, that can be turned on as an air cleaner. It will filter some of the air and trap some of the dust in the water and then you dump it out. I find that a bit troublesome, So I don't do it myself, but it's a thing that some people do. I have one of those machines for carpet cleaning and wet/dry vac capability.
Totally agree with everything you said. Just about to design our living room and was hoping you didn't include any of the styles, fabrics etc that I'm looking for. Happy to say it was all good x

Please keep enlightening us with more videos. Love all of your content!
Thanks for the paneling tips Sophie! Loved hearing your do's and don'ts too. You made me laugh at the end of a rough day.
👍🏼
Best video, for a change something NOT to do !!!!!!!!!!!!! Here in USA there are a ton like barn, doors, ship lap, people who just fallow blindly without having their own aesthetic!
I like your calm directness without all the drama/ over excitable personality. I have those dining chairs. Oops. But I know they are temporary for a few years. I went with a cheap fix😐
I feel I learn more from the 'What not to to do' content than the 'what to do' ones. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Priceless ❤😂
Really enjoyed this. I would love Part 2 😁. And a video on IKEA would be just great. Thank you.
Hahaha! I don't mind a replica chair but I'm with you on everything else! And thanks for the moulding tips, these are incredibly helpful.
Oh my goodness agree with everything! I'm an allergy person too, so anything that catches dust makes me instantly hold my breath! Totally needed the trigger warnings ha ha!
I agree the most, but not in everything. I think glass furniture is a good option when the space is small.
This is one of the best videos Sophie has given us
I LOVE that Calacatta Viola you have behind you!!❤️
An interesting video as always. Really liked how you show a bad example versus a good example of how to do moldings on walls.
My new fav YT Designer! I lol how you suppressed giggling at some of these tacky "designs", and the pro tips are spot on!
Love your honesty in this video and couldn’t agree more with your advice 👏🏼
Agree with you on all counts, Sophie!
Brilliant video. Very informative, agree with your comments. Looking forward to the next one.
Girl, you’ve got more shade than Nick Lewis! Who’d a thought it. Completely agree with everything btw.
🫣🤣
@@bitrudder3792 There's alot of things I'd wished I'd bought before covid lol the price of everything has become ridiculous.
First time here. I really thought I was going to hate this video when I read the title, but I think she hot the nail on the head. Her ideas are practical as well as tasteful.
Thanks that means a lot!
I was afraid that I was going to see something I like that you were going to trash but I'm with you 100% on every single thing. Good video!
🤣 say it louder for those at the back! Could not agree more 😂
I agree with some of these. People design based on personal choice, budget, or what is trending.
YES, YES, YES!!! Thank you for saying it!!!
Cackled all the way through this. I just love you
Enjoyable and informative, thank you. A dash of glitter doesn't hurt.
Love my thick glass top table...my room looks open and great. I have coasters! Custo.cut safety glass.
Great video Sophie.
I agree with everything you said
about the things you don’t like.
Great fun video and agree on ALL the points. Love the panelling tips too.
Love this so funny too. Maybe if not Ikea you could do a video with design tips for those of us with little money ❤ xx
This was hilarious, I'm gagging at the velvet chair bum print situation 🤣. Please please do an IKEA video, that would be really fun 😊
How could anyone dislike you , love the presentation .
Great job!!! Glad you made this video!
So glad you enjoyed it and bracing myself for the trolls 😬🫣🤣
I totally agree with everything she says!
I agree with your comments about everything, but the sphere pillows. While I know they aren't functional, I love my sphere pillows. They are super cute (if you get ones that are perfectly round) and geometric items are my aesthetic lol.
It’s definitely not a rule just my opinion 🤣 my kids would probably love playing games with them ⚽️
I agree with most of our points here. Not with the chair but hey not everyone will like the same things. But agree with most
Love love this. So true about everything you said. Thank you.
omg an IKEA video would be amazing!!
Thanks so much for watching and your kind comments. Don’t worry about making mistakes, we all grow and change. No shame in that 😘
100% agree with all these points, especially overly sculptural furniture. Form over function lacks common sense.
Totally agree. Yes to IKEA video.
One of my favourite videos!
I stumbled on this channel and thought the Princess of Wales had started an Interior Design channel! You must hear this all the time. I stayed, watched, enjoyed and subscribed! Looking forward to learning more!
Duchess of Cambridge? Or is she Princess of Wales now?
Very elegant delivery and agree!
I do want a velvet chair. Maybe in a wine, burgundy color.
Thanks for all good tips you shared! You are the best of best among the interior designers I have seen on the TH-cam. Look forward to seeing more great videos from you. Thanks!
💯
The plush couch looks like it has mange. 😂 Fun stuff.
😬🤣🤣🤣
Your incisive insights are truly praiseworthy. Your infinite knowledge on design itruly reaffirms your position as the Leading Luminary of the Design Arena . As you spoke of wall trims and molding patterns on walls, are they included any more in modern design any longer as they are associated with older architecture.Kindly enlighten on this
As always, beautiful, elegant and inspirational. Sophie and her teams interior design is just incomparable in my opinion. The only thing I can complain about is that there is not daily videos haha.
I love her classic elegant style.
Thank You for a great video.Yes I never understood the faux plant wall inside the house.
So true..would love you to do an alternative to these and in a few price bands, cheaper, middle and top end!
I love all of your videos.
Mop as needed
If you have pets, or a tendency to get spiders, it can be an uphill battle to deal with dust bunnies that get tangled up with hair and webs.
Crushed velvet just makes my skin crawl!
Totally agree with everything you said. Just about to design our living room and was hoping you didn't include any of the styles, fabrics etc that I'm looking for. Happy to say it was all good x
OMG. I agree with all your points!
Just watching now. Laughing away at how you didn't want to sit on the chair with the b** prints. I like your sense of humour and love your channel.
I love your channel and personality so much thank you Sophie ❤❤❤this was truly helpful
Cleaning and maintenance is really important..great tips.. loved them😊
Wow, Sophie got brutal today! I love it!! 😁
