the thing about the knight's fear of eternal damnation was a common thing during early middle ages, roman christianity had the concept of being violent and a murder as a sin, specially against other christians. But during that time, the reality was that the knights and soldiers often battled against each other for plunder or land. So the church imposed a lot of laws and morals to prevent infighting between christians, such as God's Peace. But again, in reality the knight life was a violent life, so the idea of salvation from hell by travelling to the east to kill muslins was a way of channeling their violence against the "enemies of God", and in fact a lot of knights did it before the crusades in the mediterranean, particularly french and norman knights, but mostly travelled to foreign lands in search of riches and land.

You may be thinking of the flag of St George, which eventually became the flag of England

The word you were looking for is indulgence😊
Indulgence doesn't guarentee heaven, but reduces the time spent in purgatory to expiate one's sins.

@@XIONGUKHANETE Yeah but the Ottomans didn't conquer Greece up until that point. They weren't even a major power when the first Crusade happened. That's why i was so confused as to what part of Greece he thought was muslim when he paused to look at the map. Because Greece was never muslim before the Ottomans conquered it but that happened centuries after the first Crusade.

@@AmericansLearn The House of Osman, which will later establish the Ottoman Empire, was be established in 1299 AD by Osman I. They were likely founded by one of the many Turkic nomadic groups that had either entered The Middle East alongside the Mongols or perhaps the Seljuks a couple of centuries prior or, more likely, from a combination of both already settled and newly arrived Turkic groups that had decided to make Anatolia their new homeland upon the fragmentation of the Mongol Empire. And yes, they were Muslim and had "Crusades" called against them too (if one considers 'Holy Leagues' Crusades that is), so you were not too far off! History has a way of repeating itself so getting something like this mixed up is an easy mistake to make and one I completely understand.
      Hope this helped!

the shaved head was a common trend between norman knights, I suppose it was to differentiate themselves from their french neighbors and their viking ancestors
