  • Part 2 of Epic History TV's story of the First Crusade continues with the Siege of Antioch. The Crusaders endure immense hardships outside the city walls, but finally take Antioch thanks to a ruse by Bohemond of Taranto. Against the odds, and inspired by their recent discovery of a relic believed to be the 'Holy Lance', the Crusaders then defeat the Seljuk army of Kur Burgha. After disagreements within the Crusader camp, the army finally moves on to Jerusalem in the spring of 1099. During a full-scale assault of the city walls, Godfrey of Bouillon's troops gain a foothold in the defences, and Crusader troops pour into the city. A bloodbath follows. Victory results in the creation of four Crusader states, but their existence is precarious, surrounded by hostile Muslim powers, who will one day return with a vengeance.

Why didnt you pick the Christian on Christian Crusades in Europe ?
      Far more interesting
      Far more vicious
Far more hidden by the Church and school and education system.
Not even the Popes believed it was Gods war.
Saint Augustine had set out the parameters of "Jihad" (Holy War) in the 6th century.
The Crusades didnt apply as a "just war" or a Holy one.
The whole thing saved Europe's system from collapse into anarchy / starvation / overthrow of the feudal system , and made the Church and Aristocracy INCREDIBLY wealthy.
Ever wonder why no Popes or Kings went on the First Crusade ?
Because every knight , Lord or peasant gave everything they had to their local Lord /King or Bishop to finance their expedition.
in 1095 Europe was literally about to have a massive coronary .
They needed a way to get rid of as many knights and farmers and hungry mouths as possible.
ONE WAY TICKET TO HEAVEN ANYONE ??!!! Yes please !
anything to get out of this disease ridden damp shithole.
Alexius expected 300 Norse mercenaries. (at most)
He got 198,000 average people armed with pitchforks and sticks led by a monk (Peter)
They were all slaughtered - thats 198,000 problems solved.
198,000 farms to the local lords and Church.
Then followed the wealthy people who had ALSO given everything to the Kings and Church .........the majority of them died.
      JOB DONE
      Europe became stable.
Stable enough to borrow Arab knowledge and have a RENAISSANCE .
We owe our so called "civilisation" to them.
But they have oil . So we keep killing them , not to steal it but to control how its sold.
      IN THE DOLLAR.

Not necessarily. Cyrus of the Achaemenid empire, the first Muslim Caliphs etc all spared the cities they conquered. Not that Muslims or any other civilization (they certainly did) didn't engage in destruction and plunder, bu that it was not uncommon for conquerors to spare the conquered.

    • @mgyldz
      @mgyldz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

It was possibly not unique for Europeans, but sent shockwaves throughout the Muslim world, who have not encountered such violence before. It was a common occurrence for a city to change hands, as Jerusalem changed hands just months before the Crusaders arrived. Arab and Turkish historians of the time describe the event with disbelief and disgust. Muslims did not exert the same amount of violence against Crusader states in the two centuries after, and they spared everyone's lives when they took back Jerusalem. The "both sides" argument is usually mistaken with objectivity, but we have to do justice to the truth.

2:50 Alexios had heard that the Crusade was over from Count Stephen of Blois, who was marching back towards Constantinople with his army after the food had run out in Antioch. Stephen made it all the way back to France, where his wife Adela (a daughter of William the Conqueror) demanded he go back and finish the Crusade. He made it back in time to get killed in a different battle where Godfrey's brother Baldwin left him to die. 🤷‍♂️
